Kelly Lynch Chases Amy…
- We believe this article to be fairly old, but it was just brought to our attention that there were some kind quotes about Kevin and “Chasing Amy” in it. It’s from the July 1997 issue of MovieMaker Magazine in an interview with Kelly Lynch:
MM: We slid into our conversation by talking about what (movies) she wasseeing these days.
KL: I saw Chasing Amy the other day. Really smart movie- my husband [MitchGlazer] is a really good screenwriter and I could tell he was feeling the heatof talent around him.
MM: What was it you liked about it so much?
KL: I liked that [Smith] had different voices for the characters. Usually awriter has a particular point of view in a film, and you find that all thecharacters come in and out of this one tone and rhythm. All [Smith’s]characters had their own way of looking at the world and explaining things andhe’s done a very complicated thing as far as the differences between how menand women look at things. And here’s this woman playing a “woman with apast.”
MM: This is the bi-sexual woman?
KL: Yeah. She explained why it’s okay to be who she is and why she has theright. And how dare you. And I felt I learned something.
MM: Well you played a lesbian in Three of Hearts, What did you think of Joey LaurenAdams, who plays Amy?
KL: Oh, great job. They were able to do things that we were all fighting todo and couldn’t do in our film.

San Diego Comicon Wrapup…

Pretty interesting to hear how Matt Wagner drew up the original story boards for the figures and gave these along with photos to the sculptor. The dog is really painted like Walt’s real dog. But, Kevin let us in on a little secret, Walt’s real dog is a girl.”

- Just thought I’d drop a line to say that I drove down from LA to attend the San Diego ComiCon on Thurs. and had the chance to meet both Kevin Smith and Jay Mewes prior to the panel discussion of “The Birth of Jay and Silent Bob” (the action figures). Didn’t get a chance to really chat because it was so close to panel time, but I did get their autographs on my copy of “Jay and Silent Bob” #1. Joining Kevin on the panel were Matt Wagner (artist), Norm DeCarlo (sculptor), and Bob Chapman (Pres. of Graphitti Designs/Big Blast). I’m pretty bummed because Kevin said that now we won’t get to see Dogma until next fall—as in 1999! The reason for the postponement is that Miramax wants to show it at Cannes next year. Although Kevin was pleased with this, those of us who have been eagerly awaiting the film’s release will now have to wait a whole lot longer…
Sadly, I was not able to attend the View Askew panel on Friday (too busy at work, so my boss (may he develop a rash on all his pink parts) would only let me have one day off this week. I chose Thurs.) and, therefore, I missed the screening of Dogma clips and outtakes from Kevin’s other films. However, I believe there is one other panel on which Kevin will be participating on Saturday (if I’m not mistaken), and I will try to attend that. One thing that helped to take the sting out of missing the View Askew panel was my snagging a set of the prototype action figures for Jay and Silent Bob! They are more than cool and a “must have” for all View Askew fans! – Clare (Solo)

Just a tidbit from the Con. Kevin was doing signings at the Oni Press/Grafitti Designs booth. He was very gracious to everyone that brought items to sign. He signed my Clerks and Mallrats videos as well as signing my printed copy of the Superman Lives script with “Phil, Fuck Tim Burton. Kevin Smith”. What a guy!
At the View Askew panel on Friday, he showed a 4-5 minute clip from Dogma. Needless to say, it was hilarious. Even in it’s rough stage, it looks great. Just goes to show what money can do for a production. Kevin also told many very funny stories (most were about Mewes… I wonder why…)
Anyway, just wanted to give you the scoop. – Phil Kong
- It has been two long days at the Con so far. Kevin has been in good spirits everytime I’ve seen him. He just looks tired. Some interesting stuff has come out that you may or may not know:
- 1. Chasing Amy DVD will be comming out in November per Scott Mosier and Kevin
2. Mallrats SE will come out on LaserDisc the same time as DVD per Kevin.
3. Dogma will not be released untill October 1999. Kevin said that Miramax wanted to submit it into Cannes and that would push it back till October. Bummer !!!!
We saw the dinner footage with Jay and Bob and Linda. Funny!!!!!!
I sat in on the “Creation of the Jay and Bob Figure” panel and it was very informative. They are selling the other 500 sets of “Politicaly Correct” figures at the con in the Big Blast booth. I got a numbered set for $59.00. It comes with two varient copies of Jay and Silent Bob #1 comic with covers only available with the figure set. They said the regular figures would be out in October for retail at around $39.00 This set was more because $10.00 goes to the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund. Not Bad. The figures are great!!! Bunches of detail and Jays sound chip is awsome!
Also got the new magnets and Zippo lighter. I have a bunch of pics to scan for you guys, but give me a couple of days.
Got a sneek at Daredevil #1. One word “Bitchen” Jimmy and Joey da Q were hanging out at the Marvel booth most of the day with the other artists of Marvel Knights. Got some cool promo stuff.
Tomorrow is the Marvel Knights panel with Kevin so I will e-mail you with some more news Monday.

- Just to let you know that I went down to San Diego today to the Comic-Con. This is probably one the first comic-cons I have attended. It is very interesting. Got a chance to stop by the View-Askew/Oni-Press booth. Saw Scott Mosier, Bryan Johnson and Jason Mewes. I had Jason sign my comic book and the “Mallrats” screenplay. Unfortunately I didn’t bring my camera. – Scott Otsuka
- I arrived in San Diego on Wednesday. As you probably know, the Con is preceded by a 3 day expo where Kev was the keynote speaker. The first thing I noticed was the sweet Jay & Silent Bob expo badges. The Con started on Thursday and the first thing I did was run in and get the Jay & Bob variants. They were 60 dollars and came in a numbered card board box that I didn’t want to open.
The Oni, View Askew, & Graphitti booths were all combined. The View Askew section of the booth, had some of the VA crew selling stuff from the stash and Kevin & Jay signing periodically. I got them to sign my box, and Kev wrote on it “You fag! Open this box NOW!” I informed him that people would be surrendering the orifices to get these boxes. I saw a first print of the Oni Double Feature going for $50! That was a fucking rip off since the guy next store had ’em going for $15. Even 15 is higher then the Wizard price. The Jay & Bob mini-series was selling over cover price. The photo cover was slightly more expensive then the drawn cover (which surprised me).
The first panel I went to was the Jay & Silent Bob toy panel. Basically Matt Wagner & Norm DeCarlo explained how the toys were made while Kevin told some pretty funny dog dick jokes.
The next day I went to the View Askew panel. Most of the questions that were asked can already be found on this site. After some technical problems were cleared up Kevin showed a trailer that Miramax had made to try and sell Dogma to foreign distributors. The trailer was made before any footage had been shot, so it used movies like the Prophecy & The 5th Element. The trailer was so poorly made it was funny. Then Kevin showed the scene that is described all over this site so I won’t go into detail on that (suffice to say it was absolutely hilarious).
I missed the Marvel Knights panel for John Carpenter, perhaps someone can elaborate on that. All in all it was a great con. – Ryan
- Unfortunatly for me, I was only able to attend the Con on Sunday, so I wasn’t able to see the short for Dogma. I was fortunate, though, to be able to meet Kevin and the rest of the gang. The line to meet him went around the View Askew booth and over to the end of the Oni Press booth. I got to the artist who drew the Jay and Silent Bob comics and was able to get him to sketch me a pic of Jay and Silent Bob with Jay flicking off me and saying, “What the fuck you lookin’ at man.” Then Scott Mosier came around and I got to talk to him about how the editing was going.
Finally, the line got up to Kevin. I went up to him, shook his hand, and he signed my books and shirts. We talked about the release date for Dogma, I shook his hand again, and left with probably my greatest experience from the SD Comic Con I’ve had within the last 3 years of being there. To tell you the truth, though, it looked like Kevin was eal tired of signing shit and talking to people. A pretty worn out guy after 4 days of the same shit. Of course, that’s just my opinion.
Anyways, after the Con, me and my friends went to the car and started to leave the Con parking lot. While in the car waiting at the stop light to leave the lot, Kevin walks up to the corner on my right leaving the Con waiting to cross the street. With him was a tall woman with brown hair. The two seemed to be chatting about something and then kissed for a while. After their “moment”, I called out his name and we talked for a little bit. I complimented him on how he was really the only reason I went to the Con this year and how exciting he made it for me. He thanked me and Kevin and his girl left across the street.
This year at the Con, I didn’t have a lot of money or time to spend, but believe me… Being able to meet Kevin, Scott, Jason, and the others totally made this the best SD Comic Con I’ve ever been to. – RoGuExNinE
- I just finished reading the San Diego wrap-up and noticed one thing missing. None of the writers you featured mention the incredible dedication to fans that Kevin showed. Every time I walked by the Oni booth there was an incredibly long line waiting for Kevin to sign their stuff, and each time Kevin was sitting there smiling happily while doing it. To me that’s pretty damned amazing. A lot of other high and mighty (and not nearly as high and mighty as Kevin) celebrities don’t even have the tenacity to do a day of signing, but Kevin was their all four days! I was shocked to say the least. – Dirk Neely
- I attended my first Comic Con on Saturday. I had no idea what to expect, but the main attraction and reason to lure me there was the dynamo and my idol, Kevin Smith. So my friend and I walk in around 10:00, one of the first people there, take a brief look around, and start asking everyone at any booth where Kevin and/or View Askew would be. Of course, they were all oblivious and had us running around everywhere like mad men. So eventually, we come to the signing station where someone tells us Kevin should be there in 5 mins. Great! So we file into the line and wait patiently. I brought my Clerks video to be signed, but my friend didn’t have anything to be signed, so he had to run over to the View Askew/Oni table and grab some comics. We wait as 10 mins go by, 20 mins go by, 30 freaking mins go by until some loser comes over and tells us “uhh.. Kevin isn’t here, come back at 4:30″…. Shit! So now we have to kill 6 odd hours to wait for Kevin, since he is the real only reason we are there. So we go and hang out at the View Askew booth thinking something might happen, then Jason shows up.. So we get in the line and right when we get next to the person getting stuff signed, this chick pulls out a BOX full of shit…. “Godamn!” Jason exclaims as my friend and I nearly drop to the floor.. It takes Jason about 10 mins just to sign all her shit, by which time, we’re all tired.. So I go up to him and hand him my now infinitesimal Clerks comic and movie which he happily signs “Phat buds” when I ask when the hell Dogma is coming out… “October”… hmm, ok… He didn’t seem to happy, so I shoved along somewhat quickly… the hours finally pass so we go over to the signing station again at 4 and wait… All of the Marvel Knights people show up to sign shit, yet one seat remains empty.. guess who… Kevin Smith, Director/Dare Devil. Unbelievable! People are searching for Kevin in the parking lot and shit thinking he’s doubled over drunk or even lying dead in a dumpster, who knows. I hear some chick that worked at Comic Con talking to a guy say something about Kevin leaving the “Do not disturb” sign on his door of his hotel room, so nobody disturbed him, how that’s relevant, nobody knows. Then she sends 3 more people with walkie talkies to search for him with this instruction: “He’s a big guy… GO!” hmm… so around 5:30, we all give up hope when we finally see him.. he takes a seat as if nothing out of the ordinary is happening, and the signing begins.. I finally get up to him and hand him my Clerks vid and Comic and exclaim “Shit, you’re my idol! You’ve inspired my to write and direct, I owe everything to you!” I pour my heart out as he mindlessly signs another meaningless scribe when he blurts out “Thanks, man.” …… He had nothing to say at all, it was really one of the biggest disappointments of my life, maybe he was jet lagged or tired, or drunk, who knows.. but it sucked.. So I go home and browse through my items when I take out my Clerks video and notice Jason’s sig, look up, down, all around… Where the hell is Kevin’s?!?! He didn’t even sign it!!!! Godamn it! So all I got for my troubles was a Comic book basically, it really sucked… I guess Kevin wasn’t having the best day? I dunno, and since this was my first Comic Con, I didn’t know there were View Askew panels and shit days prior to Saturday.. so I missed all those as well… Kevin, if you read this, I hope you’re there next year, I would really appreciate my copy of Clerks to be signed… – nailbomb
Kevin Smith’s Dogma at San Diego

This is we need more of, hard working spies,especially sharp dressed ones Here’s a little Dogma for you. Beware there may be spoilers ahead.
-Suit’s in the shop, so I went fanboy today to the Comic-Con International in San Diego. but no one cares about my fashionsense, on to the kevin smith dish!
-Dogma, it appears, will not see the light of day until probably October, according to the engaging Mr. Smith. They’re working on a rough cut now, and it will be ready by this December. However, Miramax is holding the film to screen at Cannes in May. This COULD mean a summer release. However, most movies follow a track of promotion that takes a couple of months, putting it out in October of ’99. In Additon…well… (they didn’t mention this but I’m sure they’re thinking it)… does anyone WANT to release a movie in early summer? If they’re shooting for Academy attention, they wait for fall or they release it in winter (when bad films are plentiful and noteworthy ones stick out); plus there’s the hulking juggernaut of a movie that’s going to completely lay waste to box office receipts “800 lb gorilla-ing” it’s way to the local cineplex on on May 22. Good for them, I say; sure we’ve gotta wait some more, but hey! it’s a free trip to france for J&SB, and they deserve it for Dogma.

SPOILERS … but not ‘luke’s father is …’ level, by any means 3.. 2.. 1..
-a segue scene set in a diner, when Jay and Silent Bob have rescued linda fiorintino’s character Bethany from a trio of hell’s minions. she’s just realized that These guys are very special and she needs to take them with her to new jersey(this part of the movie being in Chicago). a fantastic diatribe on john hughes movies from jay, explaining why they are in chi-town. I believe the specifics have been covered elsewhere on-site. a fantastic Star Wars reference and some truly disgusting comments from Jay were among the highlights. The film was shot in ‘anamorphic 2:35’ which is greek to me but it did look slightly ‘more’ widescreen then most letterbox videos i’ve seen. VERY COOL!
-on a lesser note a strange trailer for dogma was shown that was put together by miramax to entice foreign distributors. “strange?”, you say? Well, it was made before any of Dogma was actually FILMED. Fortunately, Mirimax had the prophecy to pull flashcuts of angels to pull from… with the title ‘angels have attitude’… then the flaming skull fireball from the Fifth Element is shown with the title ‘and satan has automatic weapons’.. and then (I KID YOU NOT) scenes from the fifth element featuring automatic weapons fired and for some reason a rocket launcher blowing up a bar are featured. Very surreal, and very funny.
