Mysterio’s Latest On-Set J&SBSB Report!

  • Mysterio is back with another HUGE report from the set of Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back. The guy’s got all access to everything around, and, while he’s still doing his best to keep the spoilers down (as are we), you can get a feel for at least what’s happening and who’s appearing in certain scenes in his latest report. Remember, you can read these things in their entirety at Scooping The Monkey or at Aint It Cool News, their original home.
  • It’s confirmed that Ethan Suplee is unable to do his cameo because he (like Duchovny) is still tied up shooting ‘Evolution’ for Ivan Reitman.
  • Joey Lauren Adams, as Alyssa Jones, will just appear in a cameo, like a lot of the other Askew characters, outside of the theater where The Bluntman & Chronic feature film starring Biggs & Van Der Beek is being shown.
  • Kev asked Joey to play Serendipity in Dogma when her role as Bethany fell through due to Miramax’s desire for a different actress.
  • Joey hopes to come back and work with Kevin again in larger roles in future films.
  • Other folks listed as just doing “cameos”: O’Halloran, Anderson, Ewell, Humphries, Johnson, Flanagan. We’re not sure if this was their only scene or if these actors will show up elsewhere. Our bet is that most characters from the previous films will show up in just this one scene (referenced above as a spoiler).
  • Jason Lee will be on set for other scenes, so his role or roles are obviously not just a single cameo.

Signed Dogma SE, Clerks TAS DVD’s Available For Pre-Order!

  • The headline pretty much says it all. While the Clerks cartoon is still on track for a release later this month (sadly, we’ve been unable to get a preview copy for the site), the Dogma SE remains in limbo. However, you can reserve a copy of both from Jay & Silent Bob’s Secret Stash for $29.99 each right now! This is the only place to get these things SIGNED by Kevin Smith himself! That’s right, the price does include the Kev signature. Surf over to The Stash online and place those orders. The Clerks cartoon discs will arrive on schedule, and you’ll be guaranteed a copy of the signed Dogma SE as soon as it sees release. We’ll let ya know when to expect that as soon as we know, though.

CSN’S Green Arrow #1 Review!

  • More incredibly great press from a very reputable and important publication, Comic Shop News. From this week’s issue (#712) comes the following GLOWING review of Green Arrow #1:
“Y’know, I never realized that Kevin Smith’s stint on “Daredevil” was just a warm-up! But now that I’ve read the first issue of his “Green Arrow” series, it’s obvious that he was holding back the best stuff for Ollie.

“Green Arrow” marks Oliver Queen’s return to the role that he filled for more than a half-century – and it marks Kevin Smith’s DC debut. This series united him with artists Phil Hester and Ande Parks; together, the three are pulling out all the stops to make the Emerald Archer an A-team player in the DC Universe.

How does he do it? How does Kevin Smith bring back a character who was blown to bits a few years ago? I’m not going to give that one away – but I will note for posterity that my good friend Michael Brown accurately predicted exactly how this story would tie in with “Final Night”. And, just as Doctor Mike claimed, it works…and it makes perfect sense, since the clues were there all along.

But how Kevin Smith brings Oliver Queen back is less important than why he brings Oliver Queen back. Oliver Queen’s death was far more memorable than the last few years of his super-hero life – and if Smith had brought Ollie back only to return him to his previous career of mediocrity, then all the effort would have been wasted. Instead, Smith is rebuilding the character without tossing out any of the qualities that defined him in the past. And, of course, he’s very good at it – but what would you expect from a man who’s made his career as a filmmaker whose skill at characterization is superlative?

All the questions aren’t answered in the first issue – but there’s no rush, since Smith has a twelve-issue odyssey mapped out. And while Odysseus’ journey took twenty years, Oliver will find his way home in twelve issues.

One surprise here was Smith’s choice of artists: after working with a high-profile fan-fave like Joe Quesada on “Daredevil”, Smith could have had his choice of artistic superstars. He chose Hester and Parks, though, because they’re more than flash and finish – their storytelling skills are top notch, and their bold linework gives the story a dynamic style that immediately establishes this book as much more than the typical fine-line pin-up comic or the manga-derivative flavor of the month.

And one other surprise – Kevin Smith does manage to get away with one sexy scene that surprised me; it’s perfectly in character and, while the scene’s merely suggestive, it’s still a little more risque than you expect from a mainstream superhero comic.

Want a superhero comic you can truly enjoy – and one that you won’t be embarrassed to put into a non-fan’s hands? With its combination of believable characterization, dynamic visuals, and deft plotting, “Green Arrow” fits the bill perfectly.”

The review then gives the book five stars, which they define as, “You don’t find comics better than this; creme de la creme.” Wow! Sounds like one to buy a few extra copies of. These puppies might be worth something down the road! This new series can’t show up soon enough. We can’t wait.

  • Here’s a few more big screen chances to catch some View Askew classics:
  • Clerks will be shown Feb. 7-8 and Chasing Amy will be shown Feb 9-10 in the Ferguson Center Theatre at the University of Alabama. Admission is free.
  • Clerks is being shown on Feb.9th & 10th at the Phoenix Film Festival in Phoenix, Az. The event is being held at the AMC Arizona Center Cinema. The website www.phxfilm.com states that it will be showing at midnight on both nights.
  • In preparation for Kevin’s visit to SUNY Fredonia, the school’s Films chair is going to be showing two of his movies, one a week. Both flicks will be shown in the Multi-Purpose Room of the Williams Center on Fredonia’s campus. The first choice, Mallrats, will be shown at 8 on April 9. The second choice, Dogma, will be shown the next Tuesday, the 17th, at 8, same place.
  • CORRECTION: The Mallrats date for the midnight movie at Madison Union is not the 10th as previously reported. It will play on the 17th of this month according to their web site.
  • The deleted opening sequence of Mallrats has been placed as the 7th best deleted scene on DVD by DVD Review magazine in the UK.
  • And finally today, Kevin gets a quote in the latest issue of British movie magazine Total Film:
“I write for hire, but I would never be a director for hire. Offers have come down and sometimes it’s hard to say no, just because there’s a lot of money involved. It’s like if somebody said: ‘Hey, here’s $10 million, will you suck a dick?’ You’d certainly think about it before you say no.”
