AICN: Venable’s J&SBSB Score Report (& More!)
- Some new pics have been added to composer James Venable’s website, venablemusic.com which contain shots of the orchestra recording the score to Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back and lots more.
Mysterio’s also got a ton of pics of his own, along with a report on the session itself which appears over at AICN. There’s also some text about the ADR (automated dialogue replacement) session, where some of the film’s actors are re-recording some dialogue for the flick. Here’s a small snippet:
For Mewes, ADR seems to come naturally to him. Actors are basically given the choice of headphones with or without reference production sound so they can mimic their lines, followed by 3 “beeps” which help to cue the actor as to when they should begin saying their lines at a particular cue. With Mewes, the man needs no headphones, or reference. He just follows the scene on screen in front of him, followed by the “beeps” and nails it like a pro. Throughout production the guy’s been on the ball, never seeming to miss a beat, and today’s no different. I think the fact that Mewes essentially carries this film will be quite a surprise to some. He’s done some surprisingly good work here, and after putting the character of “Jay” to rest, desires to continue his pursuit of his acting career into different areas, outside of just playing “Jay”.

Also, seeing as Jim Venable is doing the musical score for J&SBSB, you might also be interested to know that he’s also doing the music for “Samurai Jack”, the new cartoon from the same guy who does Powerpuff Girls & Dexter’s Labrotory. The latest issues of Toyfare and Wizard have a “Samurai Jack” CD-ROM enclosed, which contains a Behind The Scenes featurette where youget to see and hear Jim Venable talk about the music he creates for the series. Nothing about J&SBSB there, though.
Green Arrow News & Next Issue’s Preview!
- Green Arrow #6 will arrive in stores on Wednesday from DC Comics. The issue is written by Kevin Smith, with art by Phil Hester and Ande Parks and a beautifullu painted cover by Matt Wagner. Here’s how DC describes the issue:
“‘Quiver continues, guest-starring Batman, Black Canary and Arsenal. The Emerald Archer and the Dark Knight face off against the Demon Etrigan in order to learn the secret of Ollie’s apparent resurrection.”
Green Arrow #6 will be 32 pages and will cost $2.50. Thanks to Comics Continuum for providing the first few pages of the book. Check them out by clicking on the thumbnails above.
Speaking of Ollie Queen, DC is going back to press for the fourth time with Green Arrow #1, and Kevin Smith will write the lead story in an upcoming Green Arrow Secret Files according to Comics Newsarama. Sounds like there’s plenty more Green Arrow goodness to come, and that the books continue to sell at an amazing rate. Hope you got those first print issue #1’s when they were around!
J&SBSB One Sheet Image…
- Here’s a slightly better quality look at the full one sheet for Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back. As you can see, it’s quite similar to the soundtrack art we posted recently, with the tagline and credits added at the top and bottom, of course. If we can get an even clearer scan, we’ll post that up, but for now, it’s something.

- Chalk up another glowing review for the upcoming “A Better Place” DVD, this one at the DVD File website…So take THAT you people who thought we were blowing smoke, the DVD’s loved everywhere! Anyway, DVDFile’s an extremely reputable and well-read site. Here’s their summary:
Fans of View Askew know that their DVD releases are among the best out there in terms of quality extras, and one huge reason for that is Vincent Pereira. He’s literally one of us in terms of his passion for DVD and movies. As such, it pleases me greatly to see someone with such a love for the format actually have a movie of his own to showcase. Vincent knows how a disc should really be done and a big thanks go out to him for his years of work, both on this disc and his many years on some of View Askew’s biggest titles. This is a disc and film that should be required viewing in film schools from here on out and, while the intensity of the film may not be to everyone’s liking, it’s certainly a film that deserves to be seen.

- According to the Fall/Winter 2001 preview from Lion’s Gate, VULGAR is back under the “September 2001” release slate. With only two months to go, it certainly looks like they’ll start to roll the film out to theaters then. Again, expect a very small release, as the film’s coming out unrated.
- The influence continues to spread. In Indianapolis, IN, the “Big Dumb Show” on WRZX (103.3 FM) mentioned the pushing up of J&SBSB today. They gave a brief synopsis of the plot, followed by their personal comments that went something along the lines of “this could be the best movie ever”. Pretty good hype considering they’ve yet to see the film, going off just plot and reputation alone.
- A recent Entertainment Weekly blurb mentioned Kevin’s work on the documentary for Prince. Here’s the full text:
RAINBOW COALITION – Director Kevin Smith, whose comedies always get R ratings for language, may make his first G movie: He was asked by Prince, who not long ago swore off swearing, to direct a documentary centered on his upcoming The Rainbow Children, a jazz-fusion-y concept album “steeped in biblical history”. Smith says Prince sought him out because “he seemed to dig on Dogma, particularly how we tackled race, creed, and religion.” The doc won’t be “about him as much as what he refers to as The Truth” and will consist largely of footage shot at a Minneapolis fan festival, where Smith and Prince led focus groups discussing everything from the ridiculous (i.e., the record industry) to the sublime. “Lifelong fans talked about how he’d been so reclusive until recently,” says Smith. “He agreed and gave the credit to God.” When the director finishes August’s Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, he hopes to do a one-on-one with Prince that would help viewers “get their heads around why he’s suddenly more into Jesus…[But] the first question I’d like to ask him is ‘Do you ever just wear sneakers?’”
- This small blurb comes from the “Watch Out For…” column of the Daily Mail (British Newspaper) entertainment column. Still no word on a British release date for the film itself, though:
“Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Jason Mewes – the gorgeous Shannon Elizabeth – and Chris Rock, who star in director Kevin Smith’s deliriously funny comedy Jay And Silent Bob Strike Back. Mr Mewes and film-maker Smith play the title characters. Fans of Smith’s previous films, which include Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy and Dogma, will have met dope-smoking, babe-obsessed duo Jay and Silent Bob before. This film has them hitting the road, from New Jersey to Hollywood, to prevent a movie biography made about them. Mark Hamill from Star Wars has a cameo playing a bloated, middle-age super hero (well, sort of) in a side-splitting sci-fi parody.”
- Finally today, scattered reports are coming in of the J&SBSB trailer playing with Jurassic Park 3 in the US and Canada. Considering that film’s massive gross last week, that can only mean more exposure…A good thing!
Jay & Bob Soundtrack Mentioned On Howard Stern Show…
- Just had to get this scoop online as well as there’s already a slew of e-mails out it…On this morning’s Howard Stern radio show, around 10:00 AM EST, Stern talked about “Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back” – specifically the soundtrack. He has some very kind words about (”The great film director”) Kevin, and he played the Afroman song, “Because I Got High.” He also mentioned the video. He played most of the song (cutting out the sex references only), saying that it’s the “#1 requested song at K-Rock.” Stern also gave Kevin credit for discovering Afroman and bringing him to the public. Check back later and we’ll try and get an audio clip of this online for ya.
Dogma Documentary To Be Released On DVD!
- Here’s some big news to make your Monday morning a little brighter – Counting Down has confirmed with Kevin that “In Defense Of Dogma”, the unreleased documentary originally scheduled for the Special Edition DVD, will be released in the DVD format in some fashion. Whether this happens on a standalone disc or as a part of another disc somewhere has not yet been announced. We’ll see what we can find out and followup on this story as soon as possible.
