Thought you might want some comments on the show, for your site. Likely you’ll get some pieces of mail from fans who are a lot less exhausted than I am as I type this, but there might be a few good tidibts. First off, as one of the people in charge of the event, I can say that Kevin was extremely kind and generous to myself and the rest of the crew. I only regret I didn’t get to thank him after it was over. I had the bizarre duty and extreme honor to get to introduce, Kevin, after which he took the stage, and immediately jumped into questioning. There were a lot of requests for things like autographs, pictures, hugs and handshakes.
The definite highlights of the night came in rapid succession. Just after a big chunk of people had left, a woman asked for an autograph from Kevin. Someone else had already asked for one, and Kevin had said he wasn’t doing autographs, but she explained it was very important; her boyfriend had broken up with her because of “personal problems” and she was trying to win him back. Since he is a HUGE Kevin Smith fan, she thought an autograph would go a long way. Kevin doesn’t want to do an autograph, he’d rather call the guy up on his cell phone and try to convince him to take her back!
So while she searches for his phone number (Don’t ask me where she was looking) he calls up Mewes, who gave a few shoutouts to Syracuse, and very slyly asked who wanted a “piece of the Mewes.” Definitely the biggest laugh of the night.
After a few more hilarious comments from Jay, Kevin calls the boyfriend. After much hemming and hawing, Kevin puts him on the mike, and he says he loves the girl (who appeared from where I was sitting to be in tears), and that he wants to go out with her. Whether or not it was genuine could be debated. But it was still clearly a highlight.
The questions themselves received either short responses or huge stories. The biggest were ones about the funding of Clerks (Lesson Learned: JC Penny’s is the easiest credit card to acquire), a lengthy explanation of the Mewes/Smith friendship (It involves an Asteroid arcade game, and fellating trackballs), the story behind the idea for Suzanne and also the physical shooting of it (Jay was convinced that the monkey, or ape excuse me, was ready to kill him at any second), and a long section on Walt Flanagan’s Dog (”Kill the baby!”)
As for pertinent info, “Jersey Girl” starts in July, and so far the only actors cast are Affleck and George Carlin. The Clerks cartoon movie will be out, approximately, one and a half years after he writes it and the voices are recorded. And he mentioned The Brave and The Bold and Black Cat, but that’s sort of already known.
From the standpoint of assisting with the programming, the show went off very well, and as a fan, I LOVED it.
Hopefully all the other comments you get will be positive as well, those who were there and especially those who stayed until the end, seemed to be enjoying themselves.
Some of you have heard those stories, some of you will see them live at future appearances or at Vulgarthon this year, and more of you will love catching them on the DVD in 2002.
