Commentary…

  • Howdy folks! How’s things? It’s getting really cold REALLY fast here in Central PA this year, temps dropped from the 70’s and into the low 50’s in a day. Crazy. They’re seeing similar temps in Philly and Paulsboro, where Jersey Girl is filming, though so far, the weather hasn’t interfered with the schedule. Shooting is still scheduled to wrap up early next month. More on JG’s filming below.

On the TV front, been watching a lot of it, thanks to the miracle that is the VCR. Shows worth checking out this year: Buffy & Angel (both off to a good start this year), Alias, Smallville, The Sopranos, the always consistent Law & Orders…NBC’s Boomtown also had a couple good episodes to kick off their season. Looking forward to the start of Fox’s “24” next week as well, especially after its gutsy finale last year. One of the best season finales of all time. The Simpsons should finally be back soon as well, hopefully they’ve got a good Halloween episode on tap for this year.

Theatrically, checked out the long-awaited “The Rules of Attraction”, yet another flick that Lions Gate saved due to controversy. It’s a pretty entertaining, nasty little film, and one worth looking for. Sadly, the box office was really low last week, so find it fast. It’s diretor Roger Avary’s first theatrical effort since the excellent “Killing Zoe”.

Alrighty, let’s check out what’s new in the world of Askew today:

Jersey Girl Set: November 14, 2003 Release?

October 15th @ 7:00 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris, Robert Getz

  • Jersey Girl continues filming…On Friday, they began a 3-day shoot in Paulsboro which is wrapping up today. After a set visit on Friday, several extras continued to be used in the scene, with today being the largest of the three. A full auditorium audience was required, thus, we expect a lot of reports will start to pop up here and there. The scene will likely be one of the more elaborate, showcase scenes of the movie, and perhaps the most memorable.

We’re awaiting word from the powers that be on what we can and can’t say regarding this scene, as we are selectively keeping spoilers to a minimum here at the site. We can tell you that a bunch of the cast was on hand, and it was certainly THE scene to be on set for, a wonderful treat. Watch for updates at this site, or surf around the View Askew WWWBoard, as we’re sure that reports will start appearing from those lucky fans in attendance. We’ll have a set report of our own here at the site as soon as we get it spoiler checked!

By the way, a piece of literature handed out to extras had the date of November 14th, 2003 on it — A possible release date for the film? This would be on track with the Fall 2003 timeframe. The date IS a Friday, too. You heard it here first!

“Kevin Smith Way” – Small Update…

  • The town of Paulsboro still intends to name a street after Kevin, though the dates that we received regarding the ceremony were obviously given to us in haste — Several approvals and signatures are needed before the street can be officially renamed. We’ll keep you posted on this. As far as we know, the street will get the name without any objection, but procedure must still be followed.

  • Lowes Cineplex theaters are having an auction with the proceeds going to Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Their auctions involve a unique, cool idea – Popcorn buckets designed by celebrities. One of the buckets is designed by Affleck and the rest of the Daredevil cast including Colin Farrell and Jenifer Garner. To place a bid, check out the item HERE.
  • Right on schedule, The Fourth Rail logged their review of Spidey/Black Cat #3 — Yet again they recommend this book, scoring it an 8/10. Don’t forget to pick this issue up! It’s now arriving at comic stores everywhere.
  • The trailer for Jason Lee’s “A Guy Thing” is now up in the wonderful Quicktime format, at the official Apple Quicktime site. Speaking of Lee, the trailer for “Dreamcatcher” should be attached to a bunch of “The Ring” prints (the creepy flick opens up this Friday, the 18th).
  • And speaking of that flick, the prize in this week’s Bikkit.com “Guess the Gross” contest is a Mallrats Blueprint poster (Operation Drive-By). The contest is to guess the opening weekend gross of The Ring.
  • Check out a new Jersey Girl set visit report from UK Askew staffer Brian Harley at www.ukaskew.com.
  • Yet another extra report from the Jersey Girl Hard Rock Cafe shoot is up at Afflecktopia. This one’s very detailed, but does take you through the entire process of what being an extra is all about.
  • Speaking of UK stuff, Chasing Amy is showing on one of the main British TV channels this Saturday, BBC2, at 10:30 PM.
  • The great Silent Bob is quoted today over at the Moviepunks website.
  • And finally today, here’s an interesting blurb on Affleck/Damon-produced “The Third Wheel” from this article on delayed film releases:
Miramax is also the distributor of “The Third Wheel,” a romantic comedy that features Luke Wilson, Ben Affleck and Denise Richards. Shot in 1999, the film has been on the studio’s release schedule for two years without ever coming out.

“Sometimes you have to face the fact that some movies are better off on TV or DVD than in a theater,” explains Miramax Films co-chief Harvey Weinstein. “You’re asking a lot of an audience to pay nearly $10 to see a movie, so you don’t want them to feel cheated.”

Most of these movies never see the light of day for an all-too-obvious reason: They’re awful. In its review of “D-Tox,” which was released overseas earlier this year, Variety called the film “almost totally merit-free.” One Internet review of a “Third Wheel” test screening called it “a laugh-free comedy,” saying Wilson was “excruciating to watch” in the lead role. Even Weinstein admits that “The Third Wheel” would be better off as a video release. But since Affleck and Matt Damon, who have close ties with Miramax, produced the film, Weinstein says he’ll let them make the final call.

“It’s up to Ben,” says Weinstein. “He’s going to run the company someday anyway, so I have to be nice to him.”

Affleck run Miramax? Wow. Hopefully that means we’ll have a job for a lot of years…
