- We’re just back from tonight’s Jersey Girl screening to a packed house in Sherman Oaks, California. We’ll have a full review of the film at the site for you soon, but wanted to just give a couple initial impressions. We both enjoyed the film a great deal, and it’s SUCH a departure from Kevin’s previous work that you’ll get lost in the film (until a familiar Askewniverse face shows up now and then). It’s shot beautifully, acted wonderfully (Affleck has some truly touching as well as painful moments), and this is by far the most universally-translatable View Askew film. This one should bring in audiences both young and old, here and abroad, and has laughs for all ages.
The crowd was very responsive overall, with some jokes/sequences getting HUGE laughs that sustained for quite some time. Any film that can do that has a lot going for it, and from the conversations we overhead before the film started, this was a tough crowd to win over. When you see Jersey Girl this Fall, you’ll be seeing a step in a very new direction for Kevin and View Askew Productions. We hope you’ll be as proud of them as we are right now. Watch for a full review (non spoiler, of course) and our complete trip wrap-up after we get back into town later this week.

Missouri Roadside Attractions Available!
- Ming has placed Kevin’s latest edition of Roadside Attractions online — The Branson edition from the Tonight Show aired and we totally missed it amidst all the chaos in getting ready to come out here. Anyway, luckily for us, and those of you that missed it as well, it’s available for immediate viewing online HERE. Enjoy, as things are WAY too slow on this hotel dialup to bring it down — We’ll check it out when we’re back home.

- You’ll find a bunch of photos of Kevin and Harley from the Finding Nemo premiere held this past Sunday here in Hollywood at the Wireimage website.
- This Australian cinema site lists Jersey Girl for a January, 2004 release date — So those of you in that part of the world should only have to wait a couple months after those of us Stateside to catch it on the big screen.
- We’re on a jet plane back to Pennsylvania tomorrow, so wish us a safe trip and we’ll catch ya back here with more news tomorrow or Thursday. Later!
California’s Great!
- We’re having a blast out here on the west coast, the weather is warm and sunny, and it’s just non stop fun! We’re fitting as much as we can into these few days we’ve got out here. We had the pleasure of spending some time in Venice with RSVP director Mark Galluzzo and his wife in Venice, checked out the production studios with View Askew DVD producer extraordinaire JM Kenny, visited Pink’s, Citywalk, downtown Hollywood, and more. Getting pretty good at getting around in town too, driving’s not nearly as bad as it seems in this town (except for that dreadful 405). Anyway, we’ll have a full wrapup of all the fun when we get back, but we thought we’d check in we were on the road here. No major news to report today, but we’re on top of the scoops still, so send anything ya hear our way, we hope to have a few tidbits for ya tomorrow. So we’ll see you again with more soon. If you’re so inclined, watch for us in the audience of Jimmy Kimmel Live tonight, as we’re headed in to watch the live broadcast in a couple of hours!
Goin’ To California…
- This is our last EAST COAST update for a few days, as we’re off to California on Sunday to check out Jersey Girl. We’ll be spending a few days out west, just to break up the long flights a bit, and hopefully we’ll be able to check in from the hotel with a few updates, barring any technical difficulty. Temps look to be sunny and in the upper 70’s for the duration of our trip, so we’re looking forward to soaking up some sun and catching a few sights out there. Thanks to all of you for the invites and suggestions for stuff to do. We look forward to seeing some of you. Here’s today’s update, enjoy the rest of your weekend, and we’ll talk to you again soon.
Branson Roadside Attractions!
- The Springfield News-Leader ran a very detailed story on Kevin’s recent Roadside Attractions filming in the Branson area. Read on to learn about what went down, what the public thought about Kevin’s antics, and for a preview of what to expect when this segment airs on The Tonight Show:
Filmmaker Kevin Smith puts the small town on the map in Leno’s “Roadside Attractions.”
By Sony Hocklander – News-Leader
Branson — Publicists in this vacation destination have worked for years to turn the national media’s attention their way.
But Kevin Smith?
The famous irreverent filmmaker and his crew took a road trip there in April, one day after he spoke at Southwest Missouri State University.
Word is Smith and crew filmed various Branson sites for the latest installment of his “Roadside Attractions” feature, which airs tonight on the “Tonight Show with Jay Leno.”
Sites caught on film include the Incredible Acrobats of China; Ripley’s Believe It or Not Museum; the lush, elaborate bathrooms at the Shoji Tabuchi Theater; and Showboat Branson Belle — namely its comedian Todd Oliver and his talking dog Irving.
Smith has developed a cult following since his low-budget comedy “Clerks” was released a decade ago. His newest movie — “Jersey Girl” starring Jennifer Lopez, Ben Affleck and Liv Tyler — is scheduled for a November release.
His segment on Branson could be a hoot — if it makes the cut with Jay Leno. Smith and company filmed several Missouri locations, producers told Silver Dollar City publicist Lisa Rau, and Leno gives final approval the day of the show.
“It sounds like we might be only a little itty bit,” Rau says. “And Jay still has to approve it. It may not even air.”
For some, that might elicit a secret sigh of relief. After all, Smith (also known as Silent Bob for the character he plays in five of his films), is known to, ahem, push the envelope of taste.
“What’s important to remember is, if you are a ‘Tonight Show’ viewer, you will definitely take this in stride,” Rau says. “If you tune in to see a feature on Branson, you might be surprised.”
Others say the national publicity — even in the context of Smith’s brand of comedy — is good for Branson.
“I love it,” says Anna Koelling, marketing director for the Incredible Acrobats of China. “You’ve got to think about the audience that watches the ‘Tonight Show.’ That’s the demographics we’re trying to get. We’re trying to get the boomers who don’t necessarily ride the buses, and who might come here to see the crazy things that go on here. We need that information out there.”
Koelling even sent promotional material to the “Tonight Show” in hopes the Acrobats would be included — despite what she expected from Smith.
“I love Kevin Smith’s work,” the former teacher says with a laugh, “but he’s the kind of kid I would have hated to have in my class.”
Smith and his film crew spent more than two hours with the acrobats, and they were kind, complimentary and easy to work with, she says.
She’s not worried about the end result. Well, not much.
“He was a little irreverent,” she says laughing. “He was funny. He said some things that completely went over our translator’s head. And she answered seriously. There was some double-entendre, and we expected that.
“But I don’t think he’s going to treat us badly. The acrobats are amazing talent and (the crew) were very impressed.”
Gary Daily, general manager for Ripley’s Believe It Or Not, isn’t fazed about his potential 15 seconds of fame. And he feels good about Branson being part of the clip.
“I think it’s great publicity for Branson and great publicity for our museum,” he says.
Because the museum is a franchise, Smith had to get approval from the national office, and he knew exactly what he wanted to see: The World’s Largest Ball of Twine.
Daily thinks the crew filmed a brief introduction in front of the museum before spending all of 20 minutes inside. Nothing Daily witnessed was distasteful.
“It was strictly an interview with me,” says Daily, who wouldn’t reveal the questions asked in front of the room-size string ball. “I didn’t take it to be serious. If they show the clip, you will see why.”
At the Shoji Tabuchi Theatre, the crew reportedly focused on the gilded bathrooms, which are so elaborate they’re featured on postcards. Who knows? After tonight, all of America may stream in to Branson just for a glimpse.
If Oliver and his talking dog at the Showboat Branson Belle make the cut, it will be the pair’s second turn at “Tonight Show” fame. They appeared in a segment that aired in February, which Leno reportedly enjoyed.
Not surprising, says Rau: “He’s a great dog. It’s a great act.”
Observing the film procedure was interesting, she says. For one thing, the manpower they used — about eight crew members — was amazing for such a small project.
“They came in a van and it was like Kevin was a star. And there was a lot of ‘Hey, you’re my man, you’re my man’ Hollywood cool talk. But they were nice.”
Rau isn’t worried personally about the segment with Oliver and Irving should it air, but she’s a little concerned about others’ reactions.
“There were a couple of off-color comments on the talking dog,” she says.
It was Smith’s brand of humor, she cautions, not theirs, and while it wasn’t anything major, it was a little edgier than what she expected.
“We went in with our eyes open and then, boy, started to squint while it was happening. I may need a job next week,” she jokes.
Still, Rau looks at it this way: “It’s a powerful network that has never before expressed interest in traveling here.”
Besides, Smith and crew seemed genuinely surprised and pleased by what Branson had to offer.
“They kept saying, ‘It’s amazing. Driving around here, we can’t believe it. That new roller coaster. All the theaters. And all this activity. Wow. I didn’t know all this was here,’” she relays.
Koelling has a few concerns about what Smith might say in final editing, but dismisses the notion that anyone in Branson should get too offended.
“If you cannot laugh at yourself, if you can’t see the humor of the situation, you need to lighten up,” she says.
“I love living in Branson and I think it’s bar-none the best place that I’ve lived. … This is the most welcoming community,” she says.
“But it’s also a small town and small towns are funny. You can’t take yourself too seriously.”
Shoji Tabuchi Theatre’s women’s restroom (above) and men’s restroom (left) were both stops for Kevin Smith’s “Tonight Show” segment “Roadside Attractions.”
We’ll let you know when we’ve got a definite airdate for this segment.

- In the Entertainment Weekly for May 23, 2003 (issue #711), they list the top 50 cult movies. Clerks made the list at #29.
Here’s what the article says:
- “Comic Book: The Movie” will be released not in June, but sometime in the Fall. We hear Kevin steals the show in his scene for the film.
- Just an interesting little tidbit: Apparently this intern who claims to have had sex with JFK lived “mostly in the Red Bank area”.
- Comedy Central has a Prime Time Glick short/promo featuring a parody of IFC. The punchline is, “and as always, on Friday night Clerks!”
Stash Mentioned in MSN Business Article…
- A very interesting article over at MSN’s Business Area today spotlighted some celebrities’ favorite local businesses. Kevin’s quoted in the article, and you might have a guess on what his choice was:
Movie director and actor. His films include Clerks, Dogma, and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.
I own a comic-book store called Jay and Silent Bob’s Secret Stash, in Red Bank, N.J. But it isn’t just a comic-book store. If you’re a fan of any of the five movies we’ve made, it’s a destination resort. Of course, first and foremost, we sell comics, graphic novels, and trade paperbacks from all the labels, major and indie. We also sell toys, statues, posters, and other comic-book-related merchandise. Where we deviate from the standard comic-book store is in our blatant and almost vulgar self-promotion of tchotchkes from the flicks we’ve made. Looking for a signed Clerks poster? Buy it at the Stash. Must have the T-shirt that Jason Lee wore in Mallrats? We sell it. In desperate need of a miniature replica of the Buddy Christ statue from Dogma? You’ll find it there. Can’t live without Jay and Silent Bob action figures? We can fix your jones.
But what makes the store really special (at least for me) is that it’s stacked, floor to ceiling, with props from the movies. Even if you don’t want to buy anything at the Stash (shudder the thought), you can just come in and treat the place like a View Askew [Smith’s production company] museum. There’s the BluntMobile from Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, complete with life-size dummies of me and Jason Mewes driving. There’s the grappling gun from Mallrats, the Poop Monster and the Mooby the Golden Calf statue from Dogma, and the original artwork and selected pieces of wardrobe from Chasing Amy. It’s a fan’s dream come true and a curious passerby’s excellent way to kill 20 minutes.
You can find the entire article HERE, which we suggest you check out. Sounds like some interesting places to visit, there truly is nothing like those hometown businesses.
Which Mallrats Figures? YOU DECIDE!
- Well, here’s the big news of the day. First off, as you might have guessed, the incredible popularity of the Clerks inaction figures has sold the deal on the next wave of Inactions: Mallrats, Series 1! So, thanks to all of you that bought sets, as you will ensure that more and more of these cool dudes hit shelves, and also clog up the geekspace surrounding our News Askew computers.
So, why are we telling you all this? Well, Kevin’s got a tough decision for you all to make. There’s 7 figures prototyped for Mallrats, yet only FOUR of them can make it into Series 1. Rest assured, the remaining 3 (and a mystery fourth) will show up again in Rats Series 2, but that’s a year or so away. So the question is, which four do you want…NOW!???! Here’s Kevin:
Kevin Smith Can’t Decide Which Figures to Make…So It’s Up to You!
Here’s the thing, folks: I’m far too close to these characters (particularly that Jay guy; I’m tellin’ you, just because two guys sleep in a bed together—naked—doesn’t mean they’re any more than just friends). I have a fundamental philosophical and ideological block that prevents me from choosing just four characters from our upcoming Mallrats wave to stick in each case. I want to include them all! The stink-palm goodness of Brodie! The Punisher War Journal-mongering beauty of René! The mustard-stained-shirtyness of Willam! The Bat-Ass-y-ness of Silent Bob! The “Fly, fat-ass, fly!” fly-ness of Jay! The “Tell ‘em, Steve-Dave!”-edness of Steve-Dave and Walt the Fan Boy! It is simply impossible for me to decide which four should go into this first wave of Mallrats figures.
That’s where you guys come in.
Just as you were asked to vote for the life or death of Jason Todd, I, Graphitti Designs, Wizard Entertainment and ToyFare are asking you to vote on which four get the leads in the primary assortment of our latest Clerks Inaction figures, set to hit shelves this November. You vote ‘em, and we’ll pack ‘em. And the sweet thing is you don’t even have to worry about the figures you didn’t vote for: rest assured, money whore I am, they’ll wind up in the Mallrats Wave 2 release (after we do a Dogma wave, a Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back wave, a Chasing Amy wave, and another Clerks wave)! The bad news: You can’t vote for any of them to be beaten by a crowbar and blown up by the Joker (although what you do with them at home is your own business). The good news: You’re being extended a degree of false democratic choice in the process! Some will live! Some will die! But none of them will move their hands, heads or legs!
So, c’mon, tribe! Do me a solid and click here and vote some of these poor bastards off the island so we can finally release these sweet, sweet, immobile little S.O.B.s! Do this for me, and I promise I’ll finally finish Spider-Man/Black Cat.
Your choices: Brodie, Jay, Rene, Silent Bob, Walt, Steve-Dave, and Willam. We gotta admit, we haven’t been able to decide ourselves, though considering Clerks already has a Jay & Bob, we may put them at the bottom of the list…Then again that Batman Bob is just too cool for words…And Rene would be the first female inaction figure on the block, so she should go through. And we KNOW that Walt & Bryan would be thrilled to see inaction likenesses of themselves mass-produced, so it’s tough not to put them through. Wow, this is a tough one.
Thanks to Toyfare for the story and the opportunity to vote! Vote carefully, as you, dear readers, now have your chance to shape the View Askew future…ever so slightly. Choose wisely. CLICK HERE TO VOTE NOW!!!!
News From Kevin!
- Kevin hit the board to do a TON of Q&A this morning, so be sure and surf over for some fun stuff to read. If you just want to know the REALLY important stuff, though, here’s the answers to some of your burning questions, and some very exciting information about upcoming projects and merchandise:
– A heads-up: the next “Roadside Attractions” on the Tonight Show airs this Friday. Check it out. We’ve got Chinese Acrobats!
– Also, for the comics curious: issue two of “Daredevil/Bullseye:Target” is in and being drawn by an Ultimate artist (hint, hint).
– Final test screening of “Jersey Girl” is next week. Wish us luck (so far, so good).
– I’ve lost fifteen pounds on the Atkins Diet so far (fuck carbs!).
– In July, I’ll be doing a guest photo shoot for Playboy and Playboy.com. Mercifully, I won’t be the subject, but the photographer instead. And wait’ll you hear who the model’s gonna be. Yowza!
– I’ll be at the Philly WizardCon at the end of the month, after which we’ll be doing a “Roadside Attractions” from my beloved New Jersey – including a self-serving stop at the Secret Stash.
– I’ll also be at the Chicago WizardCon and the San Diego ComiCon, with some flick footage in tow…
– The “Clerks” Inaction figures are selling so well, we’re going back to press with them. At each of the Cons this summer, there will be exclusive figures available. Black and White Dante and Randal will be available only at the PhillyCon; Black and White Jay and Silent Bob will be available only at ChicagoCon; and Steve-Dave and the FanBoy will be available only at the San Diego ComiCon.
– Those two years in the making signed mini posters: most were destroyed in my house flood, but I’ve just gotten a new batch and will be signing them all soon.
We’re looking forward to seeing Jersey Girl next week, though we gotta admit, it’d be a tough call if Kevin gave us the choice of that or tagging along with him for the July photo shoot…Also, we do plan some coverage from the Philly con this year, though we may have to enlist some of you good people to pick us up some of those rare figures from the others shows out of our reach. Great stuff though.
