Jersey Girl Marketing: Kevin’s Reply

October 9th @ 8:55 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Kevin Smith

  • As he’s been great at lately, Kevin’s squashed yet another crazy rumor in short order. Here’s Kevin’s response to the earlier story regarding Jersey Girl’s “new” marketing campaign supposedly centered around him:
Speaking as a guy who’s about as close to this movie and the marketing plans as it gets, I can tell you that there’s no truth to that story. Market the movie on me? So fucking ridiculous.
Trust me: I’ve seen the marketing concepts on this movie from as early on as when we were still shooting up to just yesterday. EVERY poster is centered around Affleck. Some show Affleck and Jen, some show Affleck and the kid (which would make the most sense), some show Affleck and Liv Tyler. None show me. And as with every flick I’ve made, this is not billed as “A Film By Kevin Smith” – the hallmark of any marketing campaign built on the director.
“The Fourth Film by Quentin Tarantino”? THAT’S a director-driven marketing campaign. A standard “Written and Directed by Kevin Smith”? That’s hardly what I’d call selling a flick on the director’s back.
Smells like some editor at Us Magazine was desperate for a Ben and Jen story. That this bogus tidbit fit the bill shows a surprising amount of creativity on their part, but further solidifies their reputation in the print community as little more than a glossy version of the Enquirer.

  • Kevin has recently taped an interview for VH-1 which will air on November 1st. It’s a fantastic interview which features the topic of “Superheroes” as well as some discussion on various films. Once we learn the special’s title and airtime, we’ll let you know.
  • Check out a clip from Scary Movie 3 featuring askew vet (and upcoming Jersey Girl co-star) George Carlin. And don’t forget, Askew prodigy Brian Lynch helped pen the script!
  • UK fans love Kevin! Dogma was shown on BBC Channel4 on Monday night, and 2.4 million people in the 10-10.30 timeslot tuned in, according to The Guardian.
  • And yes, finally for today, Affleck will likely hate us for this one, but his L’Oreal shampoo commercial, which he filmed for air across the pond, has made it stateside, thanks to the wonders of the internet and IFilm. If nothing else, ya gotta at least love the English pronunciation of “vitamins”. Enjoy, and we’ll catch ya next time.

Jersey Girl Marketing: All “About Kevin”?

October 9th @ 7:50 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Maryann, Pat

  • The Chicago Sun-Times reports that Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez will no longer be at the forefront of Jersey Girl’s promotional campaign. Instead, the film will be marketed as the new film from Kevin Smith. Here’s their report:
‘BENNIFER DISAPPEARS!’ OK, now that I have your attention. … Word has it, Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez’s PHOTOS will not be shown on the posters of their upcoming film “Jersey Girl.” After the disastrous results of promoting the duo’s romance, in an attempt to boost the dismal “Gigli,” the producers of “Jersey Girl” have decided the promotional materials for the Kevin Smith-directed flick should NOT include the faces of either Affleck or J. Lo. “After ‘Gigli,’ [Miramax] doesn’t want to take any chances with another laughingstock flop,” a source tells US Weekly magazine. The advertising reportedly will boost “Jersey Girl” as another Kevin Smith film. Period.

And here’s what the IMDB had to say:

Report: Ben and Jen Left Out of ‘Jersey Girl’ Ads
Images of Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez have been scrapped from posters of their upcoming movie Jersey Girl – to give it a better chance of box office success. Producers of the film have reportedly advised their advertising and marketing teams not to include either of the stars’ faces on any of Jersey Girl’s promotional material after seeing the dismal performance of the on-off couple’s summer flop Gigli. A source tells American magazine Us Weekly, “After Gigli, (Miramax) doesn’t want to take any chances with another laughing stock flop. They’re going to promote this as a (director) Kevin Smith movie. It’s going to be about Kevin.”

The story makes sense if the studio is taking the Gigli angle, however, whenever a blurb contains the phrase “Word has it” or “a SOURCE tells…”, be wary. Take this one as rumor for now.

  • Just to fend off the e-mail onslaught, Film Threat’s upcoming “Danger Ranger” feature has nothing at all to do with Kevin’s upcoming “Ranger Danger and the Danger Rangers”. From what we understand, the project is a totally original idea and script from Kevin, and has nothing to do with any serials of similar name, past or present.
  • This Friday and Saturday at midnight, the historic Riverview Theater in Minneapolis will be showing Clerks on the big screen. We hear the popcorn there is dandy, too.
  • The recently elusive Scott Mosier is quoted regarding a new Scott Morse comic, “Barefoot Serpent”, over at Top Shelf Comix:
“As a fan of Kurosawa and Morse and movies and comic books, this is about all I could ask for.” — Scott Mosier, Producer of CLERKS, CHASING AMY, GOOD WILL HUNTING, JERSEY GIRL.

The book is billed as a heartwarming story of a young girl befriended by an extraordinary boy, as her family recovers from a tragedy while on vacation in Hawaii. Swimming in themes of loss and loneliness, as well as happiness and hope, this genuinely touching tale is book ended by a full-color rumination on the life and work of legendary Japanese filmmaker, Akira Kurosawa.

  • Jay & Bob make a brief cameo in panel two of web comic Striptease this week.
  • And just because one Doherty story in a week wasn’t enough: Shannen’s back in the news again, with a new TV comedy in the works. They reference her comedic experiences in “The Ortegas” but not in Mallrats or Jay & Bob.

Clerks Turns 10 & The Playboy Mystery Revealed!

October 7th @ 8:48 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Kevin Smith

  • October 3rd was a milestone day for View Askew Productions, as it marked the 10th anniversary of the first oublic Clerks screening, the one which got the film in front of the rest of us as well as put Kevin & View Askew on the map. Time sure flies by, don’t it? Kevin stopped by the board to reflect on that, as well as reveal the answer behind the mystery woman who he recently shot for Playboy magazine. Wanna know who it is? Read on, dear friends, because here’s Kevin:
Big Day in View Askew History, Past and Present
Ten years ago today (October 3, 1993) “Clerks” screened publicly for the first time, at the IFFM. For those who’ve followed our antics, you’ll recall that it was at that screening Bob Hawk saw the flick and recommended it to Amy Taubin (who wrote glowingly about “Clerks” in the Village Voice – the article which first brought us to the attention of Mark Tusk, the then-head of acquisitions at Miramax), Peter Broderick (who would later write about “Clerks” in Filmmaker Magazine), and Larry Kardish (who selected the film for the New Directors/New Films series at the Museum of Modern Art, the sister program of the New York Film Festival).
Thanks to everyone here who would later discover the flick themselves and dig on it – maybe even moreso than the folks previously mentioned. Not a day goes by that I’m not grateful for the support (hence Stash Bash). However, without that screening – and Bob Hawk being AT that screening – none of you ever would’ve seen the flick.
And I’d still be working at Quick Stop, no doubt.
Ten years. In the words of Anthony Hopkins in “Meet Joe Black” – “Doesn’t it go by in a blink?”
Big Day, Part Two…
The Playboy shoot was today, and it went excellently.
A bit of background: along with a bunch of other directors (not sure if Playboy announced them yet, so I don’t wanna list them here), I was asked to shoot my idea of something erotic for a pictorial that’s to run in the 50th Anniversary, slated to hit stands in December. The idea was to shoot anything I wanted that I felt was a turn-on.
Naturally, I picked Jen.
Fuck, did she look amazing! We shot about six different set-ups (some scantily-clad, most completely nude), and Jen was absolutely fearless… not to mention insanely sexy. It was a pretty cool thing to do as a married couple, and something we’ll always have to look back on years from now, when we both keep our teeth in cups on the sink. I’m so proud of her, and crushing big time right about now. Wife, mother, and now, a Bunny too.
And wait’ll you see the theme…

  • Mark Hamill’s directorial debut, “Comic Book: The Movie”, comes to 2-disc DVD on January 27, 2004. Kevin’s featured in a scene-stealing cameo. Visit the official website for a lot more info.
  • Most of this is stuff we’ve heard before, but here’s a blurb from IGN Filmforce regarding Daredevil 2 and the extent (or lack of) Kevin’s involvement:
Daredevil 2
Fox and Marvel are reportedly bringing Ben Affleck and director Mark Steven Johnson back for another installment of Daredevil. There hasn’t been a whole lot of buzz around the project but it is on our radar screen. Filmmaker and comic book author Kevin Smith told Wizard magazine, “Both Ben and Mark have asked me about writing the next one. I don’t know. It’d be one thing if I only had to please Ben and Mark, but you have to deal with Marvel, Regency and Fox. I’d rather just kick back and watch somebody else try to make sense of my stuff.” The second film is rumored to be based on Smith’s own Daredevil
comic arc.
  • ‘Dogma’ will receive its terrestial debut on Channel 4 this Monday, October 6th at 10:00 PM in the UK.
  • Mallrats will be shown as the midnight movie on Friday and Saturday, October 24th and 25th, at the Birchwood Cinema in Port Huron, Michigan.
  • And another one! In Spokane, WA, The Garland Theater is showing Clerks at midnight for the next few days. Admission is a bargain at just 3 bucks.

Roadside Attractions: Jersey Part One!

October 2nd @ 11:12 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Ming

  • Ming’s done it again, for those of you who are TV-challenged (or at least, VCR or Tivo-challenged) and missed Kevin’s latest hilarious edition of Roadside Attractions on Leno last Friday night. The View Askew Roadside Attractions Archive now has the latest installment, New Jersey: Part One, available in both Windows Media and Quicktime .MOV formats. As you recall, the Jersey segment proved so plentiful that it had to be split into two parts, so check back soon for details on the airdate for Part 2, where Kevin visits the Stash.
So, check this one out, either for the first time, or again, and enjoy. It never really does get old watching Kev walk out and shake Jay’s hand — And this time he even gets a fun little burn in on Jay, too. More great fun this time around, including a giant clown, twin lighthouses, circus freaks, and more. Kevin’s in top form yet again, these things just get funnier all the time. Don’t miss it. Even if you’re still on one of those scary slow dialup connections.

Kevin Video On Affleck/Lopez…

  • Access Hollywood got a hold of Kevin on the red carpet as he entered the “Kill Bill” premiere earlier this week (cue jealously) and prodded him a bit regarding Ben & Jen’s status. Kevin joked a bit but honestly said he expected the couple to stay together and eventually marry:
Do you think they are going to make it hopefully?” asked Access Hollywood’s Tony Potts.
“Marriage? Yeah, I do,” said Smith.
Ben’s longtime pal and “Jersey Girl” director Smith may be right. Jen is once again sporting her $3 million pink diamond engagement ring, even more reason for Kevin to throw the book at Ben.
“Any thoughts about sending a ‘How to Get Married for Dummies’ book to your friend Ben or any of that kind of stuff?” asked Tony.
“I don’t know, I mean first you got to get him to the altar before you can give him the manifesto or the manual on how to stay married,” joked Smith. “He really does need the how to get married book.”

  • Renee fans, take note — Shannen Doherty bares all for Playboy magazine this December. Could this be the mysterious shoot that Kevin took part in recently? Somehow, we doubt it, but feel free, speculate away. The issue will hit newsstands and horny dudes’ mailboxes everywhere next month.
  • DVDFile reports that Gigli hits DVD on December 9th with NO extras.
  • Jersey school Seton Hall cites Kevin as the #1 speaker they’d like to see speak at their school in their Thursday paper, The Setonian. He’s listed as “Silent Bob” amongst a group of other fictional characters, but hey, if students want Kevin there, maybe they SHOULD be more vocal about it! Remember, you can always get information on booking Kevin for an appearance by contacting Auburn Moon.
  • Here’s a confirmation from the man, Dini himself, regarding Kev’s cameo in the upcoming animated Duck Dodgers. This comes to us from the end of a short article called “Green Loontern Corps” (by Heidi Ward) in the latest issue of Wizard:
Plus, watch for an extra special cameo at the end of the 30-minute episode by Hal Jordan, voiced by Kevin Smith! “Kevin’s always popping me into stuff to do cameo parts,” says “DD” Producer Paul Dini, “so I thought I’d return the favor.”
  • Finally today, congrats to Jason Lee, who stopped by the WWWBoard to let us know that he was a new father:
As I write you all this my beautiful lady is napping soundly with my son.
I’m as overjoyed as I am tired. 4 nights in the hospital and worth every delirious minute. I could go on forever but I’d rather pass out.
So, please help us welcome PILOT INSPEKTOR RIESGRAF LEE.
