Vulgarthon: The Trailer!

November 30th @ 12:35 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Mattt Potter

  • Here’s something we’ve been waiting for the opportunity to show you — Many of you know that a documentary is currently being worked on for the Clerks 10th Anniversary DVD, but you’ll also be happy to know that other footage from past View Askew events is also being looked at and cut into programs that you can enjoy on future View Askew releases (or perhaps, on releases of their own). This one will take all of that footage shot at Vulgarthon ‘98 (the fans, the Q&A’s, and all the madness before and after) and collect it into one big Vulgarthon documentary. Even better, YOU can be involved! if you’ve got some video footage of any of the Vulgarthon events of past years, contact Mattt Potter with your details. Yes, you CAN make your mark on View Askew history and be involved in this documentary! Here’s Kevin with the official announcement:
FINALLY! VULGARTHON INFO!
Kind of.
Remember our very first Vulgarthon? Vulgarthon ‘98? Five Films, Forty Bucks? The one that started it all?
And remember there were cameras rolling that day, all day long?
If you don’t recall either of those things, then you weren’t there. And if you weren’t there, what better way to pretend like you were than by watching a documentary about that legendary day?
Mattt (yes – three T’s) Potter, a board-man from waaaaaay back (the Lord of Cowpies, for the truly old school) who did such a brilliant job cutting the “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back” doc (which you’ll see on the “Clerks” 10th Anniversary DVD later this year) has taken all the Vulgarthon ‘98 footage we’ve had sitting around the office for years and he’s crafting another killer program for the hardcore Askew fans.
However, he needs your help.
He’s looking for any fan-shot footage from that Vulgarthon, and all the other V-thons we’ve held since to help flesh out the piece. If anyone’s got anything, contact him at…
matttpotter@comcast.net
Anyone whose stuff we use will be credited, of course.

Again, even if you’re on a slow connection, do not miss this sneak peek at the Vulgarthon 98 documentary, available HERE for a limited time!

  • Joe Quesada has again said a few words about Spidey/Black Cat and Kevin’s future involvement. This comes to us from a story that appeared at Comic Book Resources :
On Kevin Smith’s long-delayed “Spider-Man/Black Cat” issues: “I received an email from Kevin about three weeks ago, saying, ‘Dude, I’ve got the juices flowing again. You’re going to get the last two issues of Black Cat sooner than you expect!’ I was like, ‘Sooner than I expect? Are you going back in time?’”

So, hopefully we’ll have some news on more issues from Kevin soon.

  • See if you can spot the Clerks refence in the November 29th story on PCs vs. Macs at Something Awful.
  • So, did they get the box there? A guy from Austin, Texas and a bunch of local bands created a “thank you” box for Kevin and Jay. He wanted to deliver it to Kevin at the Q&A in Texas, and evidently, as seen in the video he put together, he made it. The piece runs about 4 minutes long, and features footage from Kevin’s Q&A, and some footage of a conversation he had as he presented the package to Kevin. We’ll see ya next time.

Phair Records New Tune For JG!

November 25th @ 10:17 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Ken Lee

  • The great Liz Phair has revealed, in an interview at the Mesmerizing fan site, that she indeed has composed and recorded a new song (while on tour, no less), for the Jersey Girl film and soundtrack! The song, called “You”, will be featured in the film. If you’ve yet to check out Liz’s new self-titled CD, do so immediately. It’s appeal is infectious. It’ll even make a great stocking stuffer. We’re very pleased to hear that Liz enjoyed the film so much that she’s recorded a tune just for it. Hopefully we’ll have a little taste of the tune for ya here soon.

  • Mallrats inaction figures are now shipping from the Stash — If you’ve yet to get your set, watch for it soon, things are getting caught up after a huge demand. Watch your mailboxes and doorsteps!
  • Say it ain’t so, Matt! In an interview appearing at Dark Horizons today, Matt Damon reveals that Project Greenlight has been dropped by HBO, and that the series is currently being shopped around to A&E and Bravo. With their reality TV taking off, Bravo’s a good bet (note that Affleck appears in their Celebrity Poker show starting on Tuesday the 2nd, by the way). Still, with censoring happening on the show, it’ll never be the same. Let’s hope that HBO reconsiders, as the show was incredibly addictive and a highlight of the TV week.
  • Clerks yet again comes up on a Something Awful page in a reference — See if you can spot it. Hint, it’s toward the bottom. There’s a Clerks: TAS reference on this page as well.
  • Just a quick mention: Photos and details on the Dave Mandel (he of Seinfeld and the Clerks cartoon fame) flick “Euro Trip” are starting to make the rounds at AICN and Dark Horizons. Fans of Buffy’s little sister Dawn will particularly dig the AICN story. Mandel co-writes and co-directs the film.
  • Comicon PULSE has some snaps of Jay Mewes singing in the Comic Book Legal Defence Fund’s karaoke fundraiser. Check them out HERE and HERE. About $6000 was raised for the charity at the event. Way to go, Jay!

Dogma & Amy Screenings: Update!

November 24th @ 10:47 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Mysterio

  • According to the Arclight, there still are a FEW single seats left for the Chasing Amy screening and Q&A coming up on December 14th. So, if you’re local, you may wanna swing by their box office to see if you can snag ‘em up. It’s also a possibility that the event will move into a larger theater which would open up a ton more seats. We’ll keep you informed. So, if ya missed out, there’s still hope!
As for the upcoming NuArt Dogma screening and Q&A, still PLENTY of tickets and seats available for that — Don’t miss this event, you’re always in for a treat when Kev does a Q&A — Who knows, with Mewes back in LA, he might even show up! Make sure you get to all of these Kevin-centric events while he’s around, when things get busy again, you may not have a chance to catch him live for a while. If you’re local, ya got no excuse! The NuArt screening of Dogma, followed by a Kevin Q&A, is THIS FRIDAY, the 28th.

  • They’ve been tough to come by with the studio trying to hold onto as many as they can, but grab these stills of Liv Tyler in Jersey Girl from the Lovely Liv Tyler website while ya can!
  • Will Kevin be finishing up a highly anticipated comic mini-series? Comics Continuum reports (as part of their Joe Quesada panel coverage from Wiz Texas):
“Kevin Smith has been in touch regarding finishing up the Spider-Man/Black Cat mini-series. Quesada said Terry Dodson, recently announced as artist of a new Spidey title with Mark Millar, will have first crack at finishing the story. “If he can’t, then we’ll have to find someone stylistically in the same vein,” Quesada said.”
  • And speaking of WizardWorld Texas, here’s a fan report from the event which spends a bit of time with Kev’s Q&A among other stuff. A nice quick read for those of you wondering what the “con experience” is like.
  • “British Magazine” names Brodie Bruce from Mallrats as number 18 in the 50 coolest movie characters in movie history, citing the stinkplam as his defining cool moment.
  • Kevin will be featured in the “Guy and His Stuff” column in the March issue of Stuff Magazine. The interview was conducted about a month ago, and it’s chock full o’ tid bits about Jay, Harley, Harvey Weinstein, Affleck, Atkins and Fubu. Watch your newsstands and we’ll also have it here.

Weekend Update!

November 23rd @ 10:40 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Howdy folks, checking in with a mid-weekend update here, hope you’re all having an enjoyable one. We’re having another “heat wave” here in Central PA — Well, a heat wave for the middle of November, anyway — Some very warm temperatures which means a last taste of Fall to enjoy before the inevitable snow and ice that plague us annually.

We had a bunch of interesting little tidbits come our way over the weekend, so we figured we’d pass them on to ya. As the Thanksgiving holiday and then the following madness of the December Christmas rush, things tend to slow up a bit at this time of year, but we’ve got some things planned to keep ya busy through the coming weeks. So, hopefully you’ll check in often, and we’ll keep ya informed with the latest and coolest. Alright then, that being said, let’s see what we got for ya today…

New Jersey: Part 2 Online!

November 23rd @ 10:40 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Ming, CookieClown

  • The second half of Kevin’s appearance on Jay Leno (from last Friday) where he presented the second half of the New Jersey “Roadside Attractions” segment is now available at the View Askew site in both Quicktime and Windows Media formats. This is the one that spends a great deal of time at the Stash, so if you were there, download it and check yourself out! That’s you on TV! See Kevin talk to Walt! See props from the films in living color! See the Quick Stop! And see Kevin visit an area attraction that’s been here as long as we can remember, the safari at Six Flags Great Adventure. Enjoy.

Clerks Animated Test Footage In Texas!

November 23rd @ 10:40 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Chris Kowalske

  • Fans in Texas were lucky enough to be the first to see that animated test footage that was done for the upcoming Clerks cartoon movie — In it, Jay has a a light saber battle with Darth Vader…or is it? The clip was shown during Kev’s Q&A today and ran about 3 minutes. It’s done by Powerhouse Animation (they of that excellent “Heroes” Clerks spoof), who will be handling the animation duties for the Clerks cartoon film totally in Flash (a first for a motion picture). No new details from Kev’s Q&A today (at least, nothing we heard so far), though this seems to be a good indication that the animated movie is still on the slate, though no release date is planned at this point.

  • The Arclight Chasing Amy screening and Q&A sold out very quickly after our mention a few days ago — Congrats to all who got tickets, hopefully we helped you out with that. If you didn’t act fast enough, hey, what can we say? We warned ya! Have a great time, it’s certain to be an excellent event, and certainly one we wish we could attend ourselves were we not coastally challenged.
  • A chat transcript with DVD producer JM Kenny appeared at the excellent Digital Bits website this weekend — In it, JM speaks a bit about his projects with Kevin (he worked on the awesome Mallrats, Dogma, and Evening With discs and will hopefully be back for more). Not to mention, he’s a very nice guy who gave us a tour of his way cool facility the last time we were on the west coast. A very interesting read where JM gives a lot of props to working with Kevin.
  • And speaking of chats, Liv Tyler recently did a chat/Q&A with her fans at the Lovely Liv Tyler site. Jersey Girl comes up a couple of times, particularly in this bit here:
Q: How did you like working with Kevin Smith and Ben Affleck on Jersey Girl ? Were there any memorable things that happened on the set that you would like to share with us ?

A: Hi Lusiman, I had a great time working with Kevin and Ben. I really like acting with Ben. He is a very generous actor and is always very present in the scenes. I feel free to try anything with him and that is not something I feel all the time with actors. I think we work well together. Kevin is hysterical! He is always making me laugh and is such a great writer. He writes really well-rounded female characters. My character is smart, funny, brave and kind. I really enjoyed playing the part because she had so many great qualities. Many times female parts are lacking in depth but I feel Kevin really likes women, is interested in them, and knows how to write them well.

  • If you’re into the Yahoo Groups thing, a Kevin Smith Yahoo Group exists — In the group, folks chat, set up in-person meetups, share photos, and the like.
  • A popular web comic called Cinerama features a blurred image of the Clerks cartoon in its third panel today.
  • Clerks appears in the IMDB’s “Truly Trivial” section again today (though we believe they’ve used this one before as well):
“The cost of obtaining soundtrack rights outweighed the entire production costs for this 1994 film.”
  • Aint It Cool News reports that a Director’s Cut of Daredevil is scheduled for this April on DVD.
  • Here’s a scan of that Jason Mewes tattoo that appeared in the mag of the same name.
