‘RATS EVENT COMPLETE COVERAGE!

September 26th @ 2:08 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Mike Lengyel, Alert Ortega, Will Wilkins, Scott Kramer

  • Alright, so sadly we all couldn’t attend the big Mallrats signing event at Stash West (we’re bummed to have missed this one, as we’ve heard it was a total party atmosphere)…Lucky for you, we’ve got a boatload of coverage for you to enjoy today, including photos, audio, reports, and news a’plenty.

Above, you’ll see some exclusive photos from the amazing Albert L. Ortega Photography. Click them all for much more detailed looks, as Mr. Ortega always seems to capture those perfectly unique moments at every gig. We again thank him for his contributions to News Askew, and hope you enjoy his work, which includes photos of the new painting in progress, the in-store DJ, the fans, Harley, and, of course, the wonderful signing panel (a couple faves of ours being Kevin with the pretzels and those groups shots behind the table).

The event turned out a HUGE success, even more amazing was the fact that the gang ran things so well that they got outta there before midnight, which has to be some kind of record. Reports tell us that many fans even double dipped the line, getting their swag taken care of by the main group, then following it up by jumping BACK in line to wait for Jason Lee’s evening arrival. Here’s Kevin’s final thoughts on the day:

Thanks, all who attended, for your patience and for keeping it orderly.

Thanks to the Stash staff (Xtian, Bob, Gina, Emile, Dave, Alberto, and the new chick), for taking care of all our guests.

Big thanks to Gail, who kept the line moving, insuring that not only did nobody leave without getting their stuff signed, but insuring, also, that we were all out of there by ten o’clock.

And thanks, especially, to Brian O, Jason L, Ethan S, Jason M, Scotty M, Renee H, and for showing up and signing ’til everyone was taken care of.

It was a big, successful event, kids. We started with a line that wrapped the block, and still managed to get out of there before midnight. Amen.

In lieu of our absence, our dedicated west coast reporter, Mike Lengyel, came to the scene and filed an insightful report of his own, complete with more exlusive photos, which we’ll now present straight ahead:

THE DAY OF THE ‘RATS

By MIKE LENGYEL
News Askew Writer

LOS ANGELES, California (NA) – September 24, 2005

October 20, 1995. That was the day that MALLRATS, the follow-up to Kevin Smith’s debut indie hit, CLERKS, opened nationwide on 800 screens. Three days later, the film was unapologetically deemed dead on arrival at the box-office. But afterwards, almost seemingly by divine intervention, MALLRATS was resurrected and found its audience, where it was unable to before, on home video. Now nearly ten years later to the date, the film is being celebrated with the release of a 10-year Anniversary Edition DVD from the very same studio that had previously wanted to bury the flick after opening weekend, to being the same studio that has now produced and released not one, but now two DVD editions of the film on the market.

Today though, marks a high point for Smith and company as after nearly a decade, vindication comes full circle. That’s clearly made evident by the hundreds of fans who showed up, some standing in line as early as 2pm Friday (with the festivities actually scheduled at 2pm Saturday mind you), and by the start of the signing had already begun wrapping itself down the block and around Westwood Village.

Smith, joined by fellow cast mates, Jason Mewes, Renee Humphrey, Ethan Suplee, Scott Mosier and later on into the evening, Jason Lee and an un-announced surprise appearance by Brian O’Halloran (who’s currently in-town prepping to shoot the sequel to CLERKS), fans were eager and patient outside, while inside, groups were ushered through at about 20 at a time, with an average of 100 fans getting in and out each hour. Even some other surprise notables were caught stopping by the signing. “Hey wasn’t that Paul Dini and isn’t that MTV’s Andy Milonakis over there?!?!”

(Note the Fliptz bag of chocolate cover pretzels on the table.)

Just as one lucky female fan got her backside signed by Smith, another learned the cold hard truth about purchasing those signed movie posters off E-Bay when he asked Lee to verify his signature on cast signed ALMOST FAMOUS poster he purchased off the site. Lee quickly dismissed the poorly forged signature as a fake, and then proceeded to show him how he actually signs and prints his name on the poster and then adding “the REAL” above his freshly signed, now authentic, autograph.

This was easily by far and large the best possible signing Smith has ever held to date. Backed by nearly the entire ‘RATS cast, Smith also lined up CLERKS TAS and comic artist, Jim Mahfood, to do a live wall painting of the various characters in the View Askewniverse, that fans could watch inside being done as well as groove to some sweet jams being spun live in-store.

It helps that Smith now has a store to call his own out here on the West Coast, which allows him far greater control of how to handle and sponsor such in-store appearances. And because of such, once inside, especially during this signing, one almost feels like they’re at a party hosted by Smith where they can relax, and freely meet and greet cast and crew all without feeling like being ushered in and out all too quickly by store security.

By 9pm, the last in line was in, signed, sealed and delivered, while some attendees chose to leave, others decided to stick around and continue to mingle with the likes of O’Halloran, Smith and his wife, who grooved the night away to the beats and rhymes while Mahfood and company continued to rock the back wall.

In other coverage, Will and Scott at Radio Askew managed to nab an exclusive interview with Kevin during the signing gig. You can check that footage out by clicking here and listening to Episode 5 of Radio Askew! We can’t stress enough how much we think you’ll enjoy this latest episode, with tons of audio coverage from the event, including interviews with folks on the line, Kevin Smith, Renee Humphrey, Ethan Suplee, and Jason Mewes. There’s a surprise Clerks 2 cameo casting revealed, which we’ll respectfully save from mentioning here for a couple days — So listen to their podcast to learn it now! Will and Scott do a fantastic job.

  • That Kevin Smith Interview from 106.1 radio that we mentioned earlier in the week? Well, the fine folks at that station have hooked us up with the full audio of that very chat, which we’re now happy to present to you. The gang who interview Kevin (Meathead, Desi, and Rocky Nash) are all big fans who know the work very well. It runs a little over 10 minutes total. Enjoy, and thanks Rocky!
  • Bloody-Disgusting reports that the latest Project Greenlight flick “Feast” has sadly been pulled from Dimension’s release slate. Dang it! Anyone know how we can see this thing? Is PG cursed???
  • We’re not sure how many of you saw it, as the debut ran up against Kev’s fun appearance on “Joey” this past Thursday, but critics and audiences are digging Chris Rock’s new show, “Everybody Hates Chris”. Thursdays at 8 on UPN. While Rock’s not nearly the regular Askew dude that Lee is, we’re sure hoping his show’s a huge success as well.
  • Okay, new Degrassi discoverers, here’s your chance: The-N/Noggin is set to begin airing classic Degrassi episodes beginning Thursday, 7 October at 8pm Eastern. That night The-N will air 4 episodes (which will repeat over the weekend). It will begin with Degrassi Junior High.
  • More Mallrats DVD kudos — JoBlo has nothing but good stuff to say about this latest edition to the amazing View Askew disc library. Although the reviewer doesn’t seem to be a huge fan of the flick, he gives high marks to the disc.
  • Possible hidden Clerks reference in a video game? In the new Ultimate Spider-Man game, in one of the first levels, Venom squares off against Wolverine, and one of his pre-recorded lines is “I ain’t even supposed to be here today.” Ya never know.

More Comic Coolness: Daredevil Target Pencils!

September 23rd @ 2:54 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Kevin Smith

  • We’re going into comic meltdown here, NEEDING to see this stuff sooner than later, as today Kevin’s given us another treat — The first look at some gorgeous pencils from issue #2 of Daredevil/Bullseye: Target. Kevin tells us it’s coming Mid 2006, and that both this series and Spidey/Black Cat are now priority projects. YES! We’re going to let Kevin introduce you to these, as his words do it just perfectly:
Continuing with the theme of sneak peeks at Kev’s coming comics (there’s some old school, Marvel alliteration for ya’), he are three pages that’ve been sitting in the iPhoto vault since 5/21/03: a double page spread of Daredevil and a single page reveal of an out-of-costume Bullseye from “Daredevil/Bullseye: Target”.

This mini-series has been an even bigger clusterfuck for me than “Spider-Man/Black Cat” was – and it’s even later, to boot (the first issue was written in December, ‘01). I turned in the script to issue two back in early ‘03, but then I guess Adam Kubert got involved in Neil Gaiman’s “1602” and – because I hadn’t turned all my “Target” scripts in – the ish got back-burnered.

Well now we’re getting back on track, and I’m finishing out The Series That Never Should’ve Been, trying to make it fit into the current Marvel Universe (so far, so good). I’ve heard that the Kubert’s are going exclusive with DC, so I’m not sure what this means for the art chores on the rest of the series. But for now, here’re Adam’s renditions of The Man Without Fear and The Man With No Cool Nickname.

It’ll be great to see Kevin’s name topping all the Wizard charts again when these books hit, as we know that’s what they’ll do. With these books and upcoming “Clerks” comic project (see newsbites below), it’s a great time to be a View Askew fan AND a comic fan.

Rosario Dawson To Headline “Passion Of The Clerks!”

September 23rd @ 2:28 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Hawkeye, Andrew St Clair, Adrian Pratt, Michael Slusser, Ben Roffman, Kasper, Dorian Boyd, Dan Collins, Jim Cocks, Harley Clerkin

  • The speculation is over! Clerks 2 has a female lead in the lovely and talented Rosario Dawson, as reported by VARIETY today. We’ll have more to say on this later today, but in the meantime, we’re digging JoBlo’s report:
Rosario Dawson, whose performance in ALEXANDER is nothing short of brilliant, has signed on to star in a pair of movies for the new Weinstein Co. First up, Dawson will star in KILLSHOT, the Tarantino-produced flick that co-stars Diane Lane, Thomas Jane, Mickey Rourke and Johnny Knoxville. In the film Dawson will play the girlfriend of one of the gangsters pursuing a couple (Lane, Jane) trying to hide in the witness protection program. John Madden (SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE) will direct the film starting in October. Dawson will then seque into a leading role in Kevin Smith’s PASSION OF THE CLERKS. Her details in that film are a little sketchy but one might assume she’d play a romantic interest for either of our two leads, Dante and Randal. CLERKS is scheduled to begin filming in Los Angeles in January. Dawson can be seen next this December in RENT. But seriously: go get ALEXANDER on DVD. Thank me later.

More on this breaking story later! We see that Rotten Tomatoes and Coming Soon are also running with the story.

  • More Terry Dodson magic for you here, courtesy of Kevin. It’s the cover to Black Cat/Spidey issue #5 in pencil format. Can’t WAIT to read the final issues in this series. Hurry hurry hurry!
  • The book “Degrassi: Generations” is now shipping from bookstores everywhere. It features a new foreword by Kevin himself on his love affair with the show.
  • The Hollywood Reporter had more details on the great news of “My Name Is Earl” taking top honors on the tube last night:
NBC wins Tuesday with help from ‘Earl’

The peacock’s prayers were answered Tuesday with a strong opening for its heavily promoted new comedy “My Name Is Earl,” which led NBC to win the second night of the 2005-06 season by a comfortable margin.Meanwhile, the 92-minute third-season opener of “Nip/Tuck” took FX to all-time highs. NBC’s unconventional new comedy, which stars Jason Lee as a petty thief who decides to right the wrongs he has committed after winning the lottery, bowed at 9 p.m. to 15.3 million viewers and a 6.6 rating/16 share in the adults 18-49 demographic, according to Nielsen Media Research. “Earl,” from 20th Century Fox TV, impressed by soaring more than 6 million viewers and six demo share points from its modest 8 p.m. lead-in, “The Biggest Loser” (7.9 million, 3.4/10); it also put a dent in the turnout for the first half-hour of Fox’s 9 p.m. hotshot “House” (13.6 million, 4.9/12), which finished with healthy vital signs but had to make up a lot of ground in its second half-hour.

  • And finally today, an odd fact — A bit of View Askew trivia to impress your friends with. From sccoper Kyle today:
So I work at an art house theatre in Scottsdale, Arizona, and as a manager I was asked to attend a projection seminar put on by Kodak. One point that was brought up was that the soundtracks on prints of films used to be made of refined silver dye. They are now made of magenta dye. However, they have been trying for several years to switch to cyan dyes for the soundtrack. But, to date only 2 movies have used the cyan dye (here comes the point). Those 2 films are “get over it” and… “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back”.

Pretty neat, eh? Alright, that’s it. Now get outside and play. Later.

ALERT: No LEE Until AFTER 7 PM @ Stash!

September 23rd @ 2:18 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Now here’s a pickle — The Stash signing gig WILL start at 2 PM as planned on Saturday. Get ready to pick up your new Mallrats DVD there, it’s a beat. Jason Lee WILL make it, but due to scheduling issues, won’t show up until AFTER 7 PM. SO…You early birds won’t get to see Lee. There’s still plenty of folks to go around, and we’re still going to suggest you get there early. Let the chips fall where they will. As Kevin says, though, adjust your travel plans accordingly if you want to see Lee in the flesh. We know, it’s a tough call. We also imagine some of you may suggest getting BACK in line after getting the early autographs. If we learn more, we’ll tell ya. And remember, to keep the line moving, you can ONLY bring up to THREE other items for autographs. Might we suggest a Mallrats poster though. Oh, how we wish we were there to get more autographs on ours…

Kevin on JOEY Tonight!

September 22nd @ 2:20 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • We just wanted to give you all a quick reminder that Kevin will being appearing on the hour-long season premiere of JOEY on NBC. Here’s NBC’s description of the episode :
JOEY FINALLY GETS HIS BIG BREAK, BUT IN TYPICAL JOEY FASHION, IT’S NOT THE NORMAL WAY – Joey (Matt LeBlanc) and Alex (Andrea Anders) wake up together and realize what has transpired between them. Joey and his new friend Zach (Miguel Nunez) get into a mess when they steal a director’s dog only in an attempt to return it and win an audition from the director.

We’ll be back later with a full update and we’ll get some some pics and more info on the episode as soon as we can.
