Kevin @ Cinematical…

November 21st @ 9:09 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Karla, Jason Jackson

  • Kevin strikes back at a Cinematical article’s comments regarding his upcoming stint on “Manchild”. Here’s his post:
1. “As Smith became a family man and Jason Mewes got off drugs, his scope changed, and his films just don’t work like they used to.”

Um… “Clerks II”, anyone?

Washington Post: “Clerks II finds Smith up to the profane, raunchy, profoundly humanist mischief of which he alone is the master.”

Andrew Sarris: “Clerks II strikes its deepest chords when it appeals to the emotional security of a passionately provincial status quo.”

The NY Times: “If anything, the sequel is more defiant in its disdain for the rat race, elevating the white-guy-doing-nothing prerogative from a lifestyle choice to a moral principle… In the years since “Clerks” he has become a husband and father, as well as something of a Hollywood player, and a glimmer of tolerant adult wisdom shines through the scatology and willful immaturity. “Clerks II” has a dirty mind, but its heart is pure.”

63% (Fresh) on RottenTomatoes.com (91 good reviews, 54 not good)

Saying the films “just don’t work like they used to” is subjective, to say the least.

That all being said, I’m doing “Manchild” not because I hope it’ll teach me something about acting (though I’m happy to learn); I’m doing it because a) the “Manchild” folks asked me to, and b) it’s a killer part in a funny script.

Also, I haven’t “increased” my attention to television; television’s attention to me has simply increased exponentially with whatever notoriety I’ve built over the years. If folks had asked me to be on their shows back in ‘94, I’d have done it in a heartbeat; it’s just that nobody ever asked. 12 years on, I’ve become a little more well-known, and I guess the logic from those who’ve cast me is “He’s got an audience. Maybe his audience will follow him.”

And it’s not even always that calculating: a friend of mine produces “Veronica Mars” and asked me to come cameo (after which I finally watched the entire first season and fell in love with the show).

Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar, Monika. Not all of us plot out our careers that much… or at all (witness “Jersey Girl”, as some will say). For whatever reason, my day job has afforded me opportunities to do a myriad of non-directing gigs, and rather than snub them because they’re not germane to my chosen profession, I like to give ‘em all a try (writing comics, the “Tonight Show” gig, acting, etc.). You get one life, right? Might as well give some stuff a shot.

It’s just a pilot, at the moment. Who knows if it even goes to series? And if it does, maybe I get replaced with a real actor. But when this opportunity presented itself, it seemed stupid to pass it up simply because it’s not something I’m normally known to do. However, does it have anything to do with the suggested “struggle” (and, for the record, mixing my “mature life with the humor and fart jokes of his past success” is something I’ve been doing since “Chasing Amy”, really – the most well-received of all our flicks)? No.

And, in case anyone finds my response post defensive or argumentative, please be assured that I’m not trying to come off as pissy – not in the least. Since inflection is absent from the printed word, folks on the ‘net tend to assign a negative connotation to posts like this, or dismiss them as jeremiads. I didn’t feel that was where Monika was coming from, and I hope I’ll be extended the same courtesy. It’s an interesting notion she’s brought up; but one I just wanted to chime in on, as the subject is… well, me.

Bottom line: I’m not abandoning one medium for the other (which may disappoint the folks who don’t like my flicks); I’m just giving this acting thing a try when the odd role that I respond to falls into my lap. The reactions to my first big non-Bob performance have been encouraging (”Kevin Smith, as Grady’s housemate Sam, proves he’s no one-note Silent Bob. Although wearing a tie-dyed shirt may be the biggest challenge he faces here, he fills his comic-relief duties easily and has time left over to show a little tenderness.” – from the Hollywood Reporter “Catch & Release” review), so I figured I’d try it again.

Anyway, hope all’s well with you (all). I continue to dig the site.

You gotta love the way Kevin brings it back to the press — It hopefully will make folks who are going to write stuff think twice. When they’re used to not getting answers back, it’s easy, but let that be a lesson to ya — Kevin’s watching!

  • As promised, here’s that Bleepin’ Awesome video link at YouTube where Kevin announces the big contest (and does a little Clerks II DVD pimpin’ as well, of course!). Full details on the contest appear in our Sunday News Askew update. You only have until December 6th, so get to work! Don’t miss that ending Clerks II promo, too, it’s a great one.
  • We’ve just received confirmation on this one: CLERKS II on HD-DVD is official for JANUARY 16TH! Those of you with shiny new HD-DVD players under the tree (or those fancy Xbox 360 add-on numbers) will want to pick this up for an amazingly clear, best possible copy in your library.
  • Want to play as the one and only Jason Lee in the new Tony Hawk game? Enter “notmono” as a code. Our boy will then be unlocked in Free Skate mode. Enjoy!
  • And on another video game note, a bit more detail on Jason Mewes’ voice role in the new Scarface game: He is the Manager of Fidel’s Records. The mission itself is to stop his car and get 3 mix tapes. You then have to beat him up without killing him. Fun stuff, but poor Jason!
  • The morning show hosted by Kevin and Bean on KROQ/106.7 FM in Southern California releases their own Christmas Album every year. It’s due this Tuesday, and one of the tracks caught one scooper’s attention: “27. Kevin Smith’s Christmas Memory”. We’re not sure what this entails, but we’re figuring fans can find out soon — We’ll also post audio if we can get a hold of it. The disc will also contain a Christmas message from Stan Lee. The album’s theme this year is “Super Christmas”. More details at kroq.com.
  • Sorry, Aussies – Our Australian source reveals that you will NOT get your own version of the Clerks II Happy Meal box there — So you won out with Evening Harder, but with this one you’ll need to buy it from the States. The largest DVD seller there, JB HiFi, apparently did not commit to enough units to bring the set overseas.
  • Dark Horizons reveals, in a video interview , Brandon Routh says he wants to see Brainiac as the villain in the “Superman” sequel “The Man of Steel”. Could pieces (or ALL) of Kevin’s script make a return? Gosh, we’d sure love to see it still (and wish it was the Supes movie that was made this time around, actually).

  • And finally today, since it wouldn’t be a Halloween without some Jays and Bobs — So here’s a photo that scooper Banks Lee sent in of him as Silent Bob. See ya next time, folks! Thanks for dropping by News Askew today.

  • Get those Video cameras ready, folks — We’ve got a couple fun contests today. First up, Kevin’s guest hosting a new online video awards program in conjuction with the popular video sevice YouTube. Make a 4 minute video that shows a situation going from normal to “Bleepin’ Awesome” and win a trip to NYC on New Year’s eve. Virgin Mobile is sponsoring the event, and they’ve got Kevin’s video up for their subscribers exclusively at the moment. We’ll let you know when the vid goes public on YouTube. Until then, here’s the official press release:
Kevin Smith and Virgin Mobile Want to See How ‘Bleepin Awesome’ You Can Be!

Virgin Mobile USA Celebrates User-Generated Content with First ‘Bleepin Awesome’ Awards
Guest Host Kevin Smith Produces Own Call for Entries on YouTube

WARREN, N.J., Nov. 17 /PRNewswire/ — Celebrating both the explosion of user-generated content and freedom of self-expression, Virgin Mobile USA is launching its first-ever “Bleepin Awesome” Awards. Writer/director Kevin Smith, whose smash hit “Clerks II” comes out on DVD November 28, is attached as guest host. The contest, designed to cultivate unusual and unique talent through the Internet, invites the public to submit videos on YouTube.com showcasing someone or something transformed from the ordinary to the “bleepin awesome.” The event is part of Virgin Mobile’s “Bleepin Awesome” holiday campaign.

Kevin Smith, best known as the purveyor of irreverent cult classics “Clerks,” “Clerks II,” “Chasing Amy” and “Dogma,” debuts his own video invitation today on YouTube asking people to send in entries at http://www.youtube.com/group/BleepinAwesomeAwards. During the submission period which ends December 6, Smith will be offering additional director commentary on the videos submitted and will announce his own personal favorite at the end of the contest. Winners will be announced at the same online destination on December 15, 2006. The grand prize winner will receive a trip for two to NYC to watch the winning video on an animated billboard in Times Square on New Year’s Eve.

“The Bleepin Awesome Awards f&*#% rock,” said Smith. “I like that Virgin Mobile’s recognizing potential talent out there on the web but I’m worried every entry’s gonna be better than any film I ever made. And where’s my prize? I get bleeped all the time and I never get sh*t for it.” Smith’s film “Clerks II” will be released on DVD on November 28.

“We’re thrilled to have Kevin sign on for this very ‘Virgin’ event,” said Howard Handler, Chief Marketing Officer for Virgin Mobile. “He represents everything provocative and irreverent about what it means to be bleepin awesome. We look forward to the numerous aspiring filmmakers who follow Kevin’s lead and submit videos.”

Hosting the awards throughout are the stars of YouTube’s “Nobody’s Watching,” Derrick and Will [Taran Killam and Paul Campbell], who will help guide participants through the contest rules. The public will have the opportunity to vote for their favorites online between December 6 and December 10. Participants will earn points for originality, appropriateness to theme, creativity and representation of the Virgin Mobile brand as determined by a panel of judges and their scores will be combined with the public voting to determine the winners.

Virgin Mobile customers got a sneak peek of Smith’s video message when it aired on the mobile company’s “Sugar Mama” service earlier this week. Entries for Virgin Mobile’s Bleepin Awesome Awards are being accepted now through December 6, 2006 right HERE.

  • Kevin’s giving more press to the trailer for the brilliant “Back to the Well” documentary on the Clerks II DVD via his Myspace blog today. We believe this is the same trailer we ran last update, which debuted over at Quick Stop Entertainment with the Zak and Joey interview.
  • This somehow got lost in the shuffle, but AICN ran a brief interview with Kevin from his Hawaii appearance (where he was awarded the “Maverick Award”) a few weeks ago — Scroll down about midway to read it, as it’s mixed in with other stuff. A sample:
AL: One of things in the press conference that you said that I find interesting is that you’ve been offered some of these bigger-budgeted films but you’ve declined-I guess-because you feel you have to do films your way-(like) talky films. Is that because you’ve been burned on some of these projects?

KS: I mean a little bit but the biggest burn I got was on JERSEY GIRL and even that wasn’t that expensive a movie. It was expensive for me at $35 million but that’s not even that much as far as studio filmmaking goes these days but I felt a little burned but that doesn’t infringe on making a big- budget comic book movie. What makes me not want to do that is in realizing “Shit, I don’t have it in me.” I just don’t have that mindset to spend like a week on a 2 minute action sequence and just sit there shooting day after day of pieces that will go into a scene. Its just not what I’m good at and not what I have much interest in doing. So, generally, I stay away from that stuff not because I’ve been burned but I just can’t do it-its not my thing. It would be like if someone said to me “Why don’t you get into cancer research?” I’m no good at that-I know nothing about cancer research.

AL: That’s interesting because you seem very truthful and honest about admitting your range of talent. So that’s not a problem with you but that seems to be a big problem in Hollywood.

KS: Or the internet. People will tell you “Well, you’re not pushing yourself hard enough” or “You should try other films” or “He keeps making the same movies” and its just like “Dude, I’m making movies. What do you want from me? If you don’t like seeing them-don’t go!” This is what I do. Why would you want to do something else? Because of the persona, because I was the dude from nowhere whose movie got picked up and I suddenly had a job in film, people look at you as a proxy of sorts. Well, they’re like “Shit, you’re just like me except the only difference is you did it.” That is true to a degree: I was very much like them and I’m still very much like them but at the same time, maybe their aspirations are greater than mine. I had no aspirations beyond the first CLERKS and then suddenly people were like “What do you want to do next?” and I said “All right, how about this? How about this?” I didn’t have a 5, 10, 15 year plan. So, I don’t know-for me-I don’t have a problem going “This is what I do and I’m happy with it.” I make a nice living off of what I do and I’ve got an audience. Why do I need more beyond that?

  • This in from the IMDB today. A blurb on Kevin’s “Manchild” stint:
Smith Takes TV Comedy Role

Director Kevin Smith has signed up to star in the US remake of hit British TV show Manchild, because he wants to become a better actor. Smith has written, directed and starred in Clerks, Mallrats, Dogma and Jay And Silent Bob Strike Back – and now wants to turn his attention solely to portraying a cynical divorcee in the Showtime comedy. He tells MTV, “It should be an interesting exercise that, if the show works as well as the script, will turn into a sweet side gig for me. At the very least, I’ll learn a thing or two about acting; at the most, I’ll have something to do four months out of every year.”

  • We’ve heard this rumor a few times now, and a Melbourne, Australia paper’s brought it back to life. As far as we know, there was never a plan for Jay & Bob to appear on “My Name is Earl”, but here’s what’s been floating around as a supposed “lost episode” last year (never filmed, believe us):
In a never aired episode from the first season, Jason Mewes and Kevin Smith reprised their Jay and Silent Bob roles when Earl had to cross them off his list because they had kept a marijuana tab for him that he never paid.

Not only that, but in the most recent weed-themed Earl episode, Earl and Randy both revealed that they never got into the stuff. The article does go on to confirm that a comic based on the show [Earl] is being written and will be released by Oni Press. We’ll keep you posted, and bet that you very well COULD see your two favorite ex-stoners show up in that medium.

  • Here’s an actual scan of how Kevin’s “6 word story” appeared in Wired magazine. Many famous writers contributed a 6 word work to the story. We ran Kev’s words in NewsBites a couple weeks back, but now we’ve got the scan as well. Check it out.

First Info: Clerks II Inaction Figs!

November 16th @ 8:08 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Kevin Smith, Karla

  • Kevin dropped a few hints as to the exciting Clerks II line of inaction figures, which we’ve been waiting to hear hints of since it was advertised on the back of the awesome Chasing Amy inaction set (these things really do just get cooler and cooler with each set). No release date has yet been decided, but it certainly seems like a couple of the designs HAVE.

First up, before the entire set shows up, Kevin’s announced a STASH EXCLUSIVE Kevin, seen in the photo here. This will be available mid-December, just in time for Christmas!

Kevin also informs us that the Randal figure will have the shirt that was seen in the flick (yes, you know what it says). Jay’s figure will be, well, the “tuck”.

Other theories: Will Elias get a much-deserved inaction figure? Will he have on his Mooby’s horn hat? Hope so. What will Dante look like? Becky in the tank top? Emma with her cake (or wedding invitation) perhaps? Silent Bob in pig tails? A special edition “sexy stud” figure perhaps? With the announcements, it’s already bound to be the most controversial set of inactions that View Askew has ever done. The possibilities are really endless. We’ll keep you posted (and maybe even speculate a bit more).

You can visit the board thread to discuss this as well.

Sucks Less #4 – And Make Your Own!

November 16th @ 8:08 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Episode four of the fun “Sucks Less” series has arrived — Yep, it’s Thursday already! In this week’s episode, the UCLA kids cover the topics of “Squirrel Fishing, Film Fest Volunteers, Street Wars, and the devastation of a really bad haircut”. Kevin takes a fun detour from the Stash intros and outtros this week, yet contributes a hilarious montage to kick it all off. And, of course the stuff continues to be enticing for a fun weekend for those of you in the spots covered. But what about other parts of the country? Well, that’s where you come in.

You see, Kevin’s also announced a really fun contest — Have you been watching the show and getting the urge to do a piece of your own? Well, your chance to film a segment of your own for the “Sucks Less” series has arrived! How cool is that? Sounds like they want you to be a student to do it, but from anywhere in the country. If you get picked, not only will you have the fame of being a part of “Suck Less with Kevin Smith”, but mtvU will pay you $75 bucks on top of it all. Not bad eh? Details from the mtvU site:

WANT TO BE ON SUCKS LESS WITH KEVIN SMITH?

If you are a current student who is a purveyor of cool things to do this weekend, this may be your big shot. Kevin and the class are looking for Sucks Less Correspondants to report from Anywhere USA. If you have covered, or are covering a Sucks Less relevant happening and have that footage edited to a segment between 60 and 90 seconds, we want to see it. It just might get included in a future episode of Sucks Less with Kevin Smith. If mtvU uses the piece, you’ll get $75 bucks.

Email a compressed review version not to exceed 7MB to sucksless@mtvu.com

Or mail DV tapes to:

I Want To Be A Correspondant for Sucks Less With Kevin Smith 770 Broadway, 10th fl New York, NY 10003 Attn: Brian DeCubellis

Things to consider: – mtvU wouldn’t air the piece if had music in it that you do not have the rights to.

– Titles would be added by mtvU so send a version without titles.

To be considered for air, you would have to provide guest releases, location releases and materials releases for every person and place appearing in the piece. Any logo or brand name on clothing or otherwise would not be able to be aired.

Only pieces that say where you are and explain clearly what is happening would be considered.

If it’s a one time event that is not happening in other areas of the country, it’s not likely to make the cut. Send any questions to sucksless@mtvu.com

Sometimes it’s tough not to be a student. This would be a blast to take a shot at. Sucks Less continues to be an entertaining 8 minutes week by week. It’s a shame this can’t run forever (but hey, here’s hoping they can do it every semester!). Get over to mtvU and check it out!

Commentary…

November 15th @ 6:37 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Alright folks, how are ya? Time to catch up on an especially busy November here at News Askew — The Clerks II disc surprised us with its astounding amount of content, so much in fact that we’re just finishing the final areas in watching it. The disc play-by-play and review’s being written up as well right now, so you can expect it before the week is out. We want to ensure that we bring you the best look at this disc on the web, so sit tight for that.

With November 28th bringing the biggest View Askew DVD release date EVER, we’re excited and busy, ramping up coverage of what’s sure to be a good month of press, promotion, signing events, and of course watching all these discs themselves. Stay with us here at News Askew for full coverage and the latest news regarding Clerks II, Now You Know, and Evening Harder.

But there’s quite a bit going on in ADDITION to DVD talk, so let’s kick into today’s update:

Stash Westwood Event: NOVEMBER 28TH!

November 15th @ 6:36 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Kevin reveals that NOVEMBER 28TH, RELEASE DAY will be the day of the large signing event for the new DVDs at Stash Westwood. With three View Askew discs out that day, Kevin’s celebrated by inviting “Now You Know” and “Clerks II” stars Jeff Anderson and Trevor Fehrman to join him for the event. The event begins at 4 PM on Tuesday the 28th, but we’re recommending that you get there EARLY to secure a spot in line. With the holidays coming up, we’re expecting a HUGE turnout, larger than ever really. Admission is FREE but you’re required to purchase NOW YOU KNOW right there in person, that day — Which you should be doing anyway with two of the film’s stars in attendance. And of course you’ll likely ALSO want to pick up Clerks II on DVD that day to get the guys to sign that as well. There’s a max of FIVE ITEMS that you can have signed, just so the line keeps moving and everyone gets a turn. Might we suggest picking up a few extra items to have personalized for Christmas gifts for that Askew fan in your life? Stash swag always goes great in the stocking or under the tree.

Kevin’s official announcement is at Myspace and reads as such:

Secret Stash DVD SIGNING, West Coast Style!

Last time we had a signing at one of our Stashes, it was just me.

This time, I’m bringing some friends…

If you loved Randal and Elias, how the fuck can you not be here? So far, it’s just Jeff, Trevor and me. Who knows who might be added later (probably Mewes, maybe others…)? But here’s your chance to pick up the “Clerks II” and “Evening Harder” DVD’s, as well as Jeff Anderson’s directorial debut, “Now You Know” (also starring Jeff and Trevor) – and get ‘em all signed! Just in time for fucking Christmas, no less!

All info can be found here.

Just a heads-up: back in August, at the East Coast signing, we had a bit of a crowd…

Video from the August East Coast Stash signing.

Fair warning: while I doubt we’ll have 2000 folks showing up for this signing as well (it ain’t summer, and we ain’t on the East Coast), it’d still be a good bet to get there as early as possible.

You’ve got a little less than two weeks. Start making travel plans!

With all these west coast events, it sure is an exciting time to be an Askew fan in California — Of course, if you’ve got the means, travelling out is always encouraged, as the fanbase has become quite the tight-knit community and a fun bunch to hang with. Make a day or a long weekend out of it, and make your plans NOW as this is just a couple of weeks away!
