The “Twitter” Report…
- As Kevin crosses the ocean on a cruise with wife Jen, he’s been checking in with some interesting tidbits, as well as continuing business as usual. Of particular note, revelations that the lead baddie for “Red State” has been cast, and offers on other roles are on the way. “Red State” will film first, with “Hit Somebody” hopefully right after.
In other news, more podcast updates, comic updates, and more, in this week’s “Twitter” report:
-
Via @deadsville “RED STATE…dead or alive?” Very alive. Scripts/offers went out to a pair of actors yesterday. Lead baddie also locked in.
Via @ryanaleczander “What’s gonna be next, Red State or Hit Somebody” RED starts mid-August. Wanna start pre on HIT when I wrap post on RED.

- The Montreal Gazette confirms that Kevin will be featured in a program called “A Late Afternoon With Kevin Smith” as part of its Insider Series at the “Just For Laughs” festival. A Late Afternoon with Kevin Smith takes place July 15 at 3 p.m. in the Grand Salon at the Hyatt Regency Hotel. You can get a pass that covers this event and a TON more for just $99. For information and reservations, go to http://www.hahaha.com/fan.
- Watch for Kevin’s small role in Noel Clarke’s “4321”, which ironically takes place on an airplane of all places (this was pre-Southwest and pre-tour bus, of course). You can briefly spot him about halfway through the trailer located at the official site http://4321movie.com/.
- Marilyn Ghigliotti (“Clerks”) will be a featured guest at Wizard World Philly from June 11-13 this year. She’s very kind and generous with her fans, so it’s totally worth stopping by to see her, say hello, and get an autograph. You can currently hear her on Retro Radio.
- Another attempt to bring Kevin to a popular program as a host appears on Facebook with attempts to get him running an episode of WWE Raw on Facebook this week. Meanwhile, the efforts to get him hosting Saturday Night Live next season are now up over 1,100 already and can easily grow with your tweets and posts of support.
- Mania has an article featuring fan-made poster images of “10 Video Games That Should Never be Made Into Movies”. #5 features Seann William Scott in the View Askew production “Paperboy” directed by Kevin.
- Movies.com cites the great Jason Lee in “Chasing Amy” as one of “8 Great Sarcastic Sidekicks”:
Sometimes, the sidekick can be the devil on the hero’s shoulder, as in Kevin Smith’s game-changing 1997 comedy about comic book artist Holden (played by Ben Affleck), who falls in love with lesbian cartoonist Alyssa (Joey Lauren Adams). Lee’s Banky objects to the relationship for many reasons, most of them bigoted and shortsighted–Banky doesn’t just have issues with lesbians; he’s such a misogynist that it’s hard to imagine him approving of a relationship with any woman. But Smith makes this character hilarious even if you wind up hating much of what he has to say. (A few years later, in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, the writer-director provided a neat–and hilarious–little coda to Banky’s frothing homophobia.)
- Second City Hockey recently named Kevin as “Beard of the Day”. Speaking of hockey, our precious Flyers start their quest for Lord Stanley’s Cup on Saturday. Cheer for them.
- Finally today, a moment of silence for “Law and Order”, who concluded their record broadcast run this week. Kevin, a fan of the program, appeared as a special guest a few years back. Case closed.

- The trailer for the new Danny Trejo flick titled “Vengeance” is out. And yes, the film (and trailer) feature our old pal Jason Mewes! Look for him around the 1:45 mark.
- Don’t forget, we’re all working on getting enough facebook fans to show how much we want to see Kevin Smith host an episode of Saturday Night Live! Just from running the post here at News Askew last week, we saw a HUGE jump in support – Be a part of it at Facebook.
- Malcolm Ingram’s “Bear Nation” screens THIS SATURDAY at the Isabel Bader Theater, 93 Charles Street West, Toronto, Ontario. Show starts at 9:45 PM. Hit up this link for tickets. Read on:
- From the director of ‘small town gay bar’, Bear Nation examines what it means to find community and personal acceptance; told from the viewpoint of a bunch of misfits belonging to a sub-culture within a sub-culture: Bears. Not familiar with gay slang? Bears are hirsute and hefty gay males whose biggest currency is masculinity. Their presence in the scene has caused controversy, yet Bears are offering a new perspective on what it means to be a gay male.Interviews include a Toronto schoolteacher/drag performer, a London nightclub impresario, music legend Bob Mould, and filmmaker/bear idol Kevin Smith. Come see what all the FUZZ is about.
- The worlds of “Clerks” and “Star Wars” collided when Marilyn Ghigliotti interviewed Billy Dee Williams and Jeremy Bulloch in yesterday’s episode of Retro Radio. Surf on over and see what all the buzz is about.
- It’s hard to beleive that the great Jim Henson has been gone for 20 years. Geekscape looks back, and Kevin is mentioned a few times in their tribute article:
- “…Jim Henson has always been my biggest influence. While movies like Star Wars and Jaws made me want to make movies, and Kevin Smith showed me that it’s possible to make it with just a cheap camera and your friends, Jim Henson taught me that anything was possible.”
See ya next time!
“Cop Out” DVD/Bluray: July 20th, 2010!
- DVD Active reveals covert art and two editions for “Cop Out”, arriving for home consumption this summer. The DVD editions looks to be a standard edition of the film with some deleted scenes. The Bluray, which is being called the “Rock Out with your Glock Out Edition”, will feature a “Maximum Comedy Mode” where Kevin Smith and Seann William Scott will walk in throughout the film with comments and skits. Additional features on the Blu include something called “Focus Points” and “Wisdom from the Shit Bandit”.
If the deleted scenes include some of the absolutely hilarious stuff that Kevin was doing with Seann and Tracy on the last day of shooting we had the pleasure of watching in Brooklyn, you’re in for a major treat — Tons of off the cuff dialogue that was fed from Kevin to these guys via the headset is some of the funniest stuff that ended up on the cutting room floor.
More details will come as the date draws closer, but for now, feast your eyes on the cover art, and mark your calendar for another packed home movie release from Kevin, who never disappoints when it comes to getting your money’s worth out of one of his theatrical efforts in your home collection.

- Please do the great Ming Chen a HUGE solid and vote, as many times as you, your family, and friends can, for LOGO #7 (lucky 7!) in the Lowell Spinners logo contest. It’s SIMPLE and only takes you a few seconds to do so. Without Ming, none of this greatness you see on the web from View Askew to SModcast would be possible. And to top it all off, the dude’s a majorly talented graphic artist and his logo, frankly, IS the best of that crop anyway. So get on over there, vote #7, and let’s see a big win for Ming this year!
- Kevin dropped a few more tidbits on the mecca, SModcastle, coming to the L.A. area later this summer, via Twitter this week:
Via @TheJesseAguilar “any chance open mic/amateur stand-up and sketches at SModcastle?” Oh yes. Lots. We’re putting together programs now…
Kevin Smith’s Glory Hole will be me sitting down, SMod-style, for interviews with a surprise guest: random, well-known fuckers every week.
Via @planethooligan “recording Smodcastle events” SModcastle will be wired like I’m Nixon in Paisley Park. #EverySingleShowWillBeRecorded
Here’s hoping for a speedy birth for SModcastle – The place sounds cooler and cooler with each passing day.
- Hopefully you caught one of the best episodes of Saturday Night Live in quite some time when Betty White hosted last weekend — Well, a fan has taken the famous Facebook campaign that got SNL’s attention, and given it a Kevin slant — After all, don’t you all agree that Kevin would be absolutely HILARIOUS hosting an episode of SNL? Seriously. We think between his drive to succeed, his comedic timing, and even some of the writing skills he could offer up, it would be one of the best episodes of all time. Got a Facebook account and wanna show your support? Simply join this group , “We Want Kevin Smith to Host SNL”, and pass the word along via Twitter, Facebook, and the like. This would ROCK.
- We’d like to thank Eric & Marilyn at Retro Radio for the very kind shout out in their recent video ad for the broadcast. This brand new podcast is just picking up steam, and can be accessed LIVE (as well as archived) at the official Podomatic site of the program.
- Want to be a part of an interesting research project? A poster at the View Askew WWWboard is a PhD Researcher looking into the culture of Kevin Smith. Check out his post which delivers further details on his study. To be a part of it, fill out his preliminary questionnaire which will only take around 15 minutes of your time. In addition to this study, he’s also hoping to do some sort of presentation in Red Bank this August to coincide with Kevin’s appearance there. The entire idea is to show what a unique, vibrant fan community that Kevin has acquired over the years. Cool stuff. Be a part of it!

- Kevin reveals that both a live SModcast as well as the first ever live “Tell ‘Em, Steve Dave” will take place as part of the big Brantford hockey tournament next month. It all takes place from June 4th through June 6th. There’s still tons of time to register a team and get there. Registration ends on May 26th. Don’t miss this major charitable event!
- The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Kevin will be honored with the Edge Award at the Princetown Film Festival in Rhode Island, which is running from June 16th through the 20th. Details to come.
- Jason Mewes makes a cameo in the recently released “Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy” DVD, poking fun at a stoner character named Freeburg in “Freddy vs. Jason” that appears to have been inspired by the Jay character. (Another actor in the documentary goes so far as to call the FvJ character a blatant rip-off of Jay.) Mewes begins by saying that being asked to appear in FvJ was a lifelong dream, then stops mid-sentence, realizes he wasn’t in the movie, and walks off. Mewes’ appearance aside, the 4-hour documentary is essential viewing if you’re an “Elm St.” fan. Highly recommended.
- Check out Retro Radio with Eric Danger Nyenhuis & Marilyn Ghigliotti, now streaming via a live podcast that you can catch up with at Podomatic. We understand there were some technical issues preventing the show from streaming live last week, but we’re told things should be back on track next week. Visit the official site to learn more. Retro Radio airs from 9 pm to 11 pm PST. You can listen live during this time perdod by putting this address in your iTunes podcast URL box: 75.24.235.254:8000/listen.m3u.
- The great Walt Flanagan plays a role in this article titled “Sex, Drugs and Superheroes: Are Comic Books Still For Kids?” . Here’s a snippet:
Walt Flanagan says his comic book store includes a small section of comic books geared toward the younger crowd.
Flanagan manages Jay and Silent Bob’s Secret Stash in Red Bank, N.J., the comic book store owned by film director Kevin Smith (“Clerks,” “Mallrats”). Flanagan, a noted comic book artist who has drawn such characters as Batman, works there. He’s also appeared in most of Smith’s movies and is credited with turning the director onto comics.
At the Stash, young readers can find the age-appropriate adventures of Archie, Scooby-Doo, Spider-Man and Superman along with titles such as “Marvel Adventures: The Avengers” and “Johnny DC.”
SModCastle Is a Reality!
- Via twitter, Kevin reveals some details on the space he intends to lease, on a yearly basis, for Live SModcasts and other events. The 60-seat venue will easily sell out for each show, be based in the Los Angeles area, and use proceeds from one show each month to cover the rent. Other planned events will include live commentary screenings, pre-screenings of upcoming flicks, and hockey shootouts. Here’s the progression of tweets from late in the week where Kevin broke the good news:
Scaling SModCastle: @CamelToad found what may be our permanent home! Coming soon, perhaps: LiveSMod every Sat! NormalSMod every Sunday!
The SModcastle programming we’re planning is DOPE: Live SMods, Commentary screenings, NHL 10 xBox tourney on giant screen, standup & more…
Via @2012F “So for the vast majority of us this is an extra smod once in a while?” Saturday Night: Live Nude SMod. Sunday: traditional SMod.
Via @tlm2021 “Did you just buy an entertainment venue on a whim?” Don’t be ridiculous, sir: I’m leasing it annually. Oh, the fun we’ll have!
Via @thelinear “‘SModcastle! I want to play NHL 10 there” Monthly tourneys. The 12 winners play for the Varadi Cup at year’s end.
Via @HeavyRaines17 “Any fear of Smoverexposure for Smod?” Because of a 50 seat theater? Nah. As long as it stays funny/free, it’s all good.
Via @thelinear “indoor pickup hockey games, i hope!” Don’t be retarded! The stage is only big enough for a shoot-out contest, at most…
SHOOT-OUT CONTESTS! Once a month at the SModcastle! Put it past me, win a shirt: I put it between some fat guys legs!
Kids, may I give you a look inside SModcastle? http://www.viewaskew.com/kevin/mystage.jpg Don’t expect it to change much; just add SMart.
@jmmiskell “weekly live podcasts at theatre or experimental fare?” Both. Like Saturday night: Live Nude SMod. Another night: we stage my old, h.s. sketches with professional actors. Another night? NHL 10 Tourney on blow-up big-screen. Sunday morn? Eternalism services.
@ewmulaw “Visiting LA in August. What do I need to do to check out the SModCastle?” Figuring that out. Probably gonna have to make a list.
Angelenos majoring in fashion or wardrobe! I wanna reupholster these seats: http://www.viewaskew.com/kevin/mystage.jpg With hockey jerseys.
Any Brave Little Tailors with needle & thread looking for a gig? It starts with sweatering up my seats. Pro’s or in-training only. Who’s in?
Via @r_vance_b “not all Devils jerseys” Devils & Oilers only. I want SModcastle interior to look like my office & feel like my living room.
All prospective seamsters & seamstresses should direct the offer to @CamelToad. He’s the velvet rope guy you’ll wanna butter-up to.
So there ya have it, folks — Just like that, the groundwork has been laid. You gotta love seeing that empty theater, the diamond in the rough, that we just know is going to get pimped out and become one of the coolest places on the planet. We’ll obviously keep you posted on the progress with this one as the summer rolls on, and let you know when you can start attending events at what looks to be a very intimate, cool location. Can’t wait.
