CNCBE Wrapups…

  • Kevin and the gang (sans Jay, contrary to earlier reports) hit the Toronto con this weekend, and we’ve got all the first-hand accounts of the events for ya as always. A few tidbits of interest were garnered here, including some detailed information on Dogma’s screening at the Toronto Film Festival, and the fact that Kevin will indeed write Green Arrow. Read the recaps for some insight on how things went this weekend, as well as some photos (hopefully soon — send them in!).
THIS RECAP CONTAINS SLIGHT DOGMA SPOILERS!

Zeebadaboodee here, with a wrap-up on my trip to Toronto to see Kevin at the Canadian National Comic Book Expo.
The day was supposed to start a round 9am, but a night of too much “fun” forced my friends and I to sleep in a little and the start the trip about an hour-and-a-half later than we wanted. But the ride was great, and we managed to pull into the parking lot at about 12:15pm.
Immediately upon entering the Con (through the wrong doors) I bumped into Kevin and Jenn walking along the hallway where the Theatres were located. I thought about stopping him and saying hi, but I figured they were headed off to grab lunch, and I didn’t want to bother him.
My friends and I headed to the ticke counter and then went upstairs to where the artist alley and vendors were located. I walked around for about 15 minutes before I noticed a huge line off to the side. It took me only a second or two to realize all those people were waiting for Kevin who had an autograph session from1 to 3pm. i decided not to get in line because I’ve already had my chance to get things autographed by Kevin at the Stash Bash.
While walking around I noticed quite a few Askew related things for sale. When I stopped at the official View Askew booth, Walt was busy selling things. I have to admit, it was strange to see the Clerks DVd with a $60 price tag on it.
There were some other interesting things that I saw for sale. One vendor had both the Blair Witch Project and Matrix for sale on video. Another was selling the Clerks Laser Disc on video. Most of the stuff was anime however.
Around 2pm my friends and I headed back down to the Theatre where Kevin was scheduled to speak. A bunch of people were already hanging around waiting to start the line to get in. I actually saw a security guard kick some guy dressed as Darth Maul out of the area because he had a drink in his hand. My friend turned to the guard and said, “you can’t do that to a jedi,” but the guard just gave us a dirty look and walked away.
We went in to the conference room later and Kevin appeared around 10 after three. The organizers of the Con presented him with a #99 Maple Leafs jersey with his name on the back. It was pretty cool, but it would have been MUCH cooler if the organizers had the foresight to make the number 37.
Kevin spent about an hour answering questions, most of them the basic ones such as “what happenned with Superman Lives,” and “how much did Star Wars influence you.” The worst question I heard was some lady asking Kevin what he thought about Ray Park pulling out of the Con at the last minute. Kevin managed to turn it around and said he didn’t like it at all when Ray “pulls out,” and that he should finish the job he started.
The rest of Kevin’s Q & A included bits and pieces of the following:

-Kevin talking about Jon Peter’s and Superman Lives
        -Bashing Batman & Robin
-A funny story about Joel Schumacher and Sylvester Stallone
-Talking about how Fletch 3 is dead

There were also some interesting Dogma bits including:

-Kevin telling everyone that Jeff Anderson will be in Dogma, and that he is really doing unbelievable work on the Animated Series
-Brian O’Halloran gets “iced” in his cameo in Dogma
-Originally Kevin planned a very “Woo-esque” type scene for the Mooby Board Room scene where Loki “ices” everyone, but he was tired the day of shooting and decided less is more. He ended up liking the latter better anyway.
-The Toronto Film Festival screening was confirmed as being the following: *Saturday September 11th at the Uptown Theatre – 9pm*

At the end, Kevin pulled out two video tapes. The first one he showed us was the trailer many people have been seeing at Kevin’s previous appearances and at the Stash Bash. The second trailer was the newer one created by the distributor. Here’s some of the things I can remember about it:

-The word “logo” was in place where the actual logo of the distributor would normally go.
-The beginning starts off with an extended look at the airport scene between Bartleby and Loki. There is more explanation on who they are and what they are doing.
-There is more use of Alan Rickman, Chris Rock and Carlin I think. In particular, they show more of Chris Rock’s scene where he falls from heaven, and they have the scene where Rickman says something to the effect of “anyone who’s not an Angel better cover their ears.”
-In the line by Rock: “Know him (Jesus)? Nigger owes me 12 dollars!” The word Nigger is changed into “brother.” My friend also said he noticed the word “fuck” taken out of Mewe’s line “The whole fucking world’s against us.”
-A very quick but cool shot of the Golgothan coming up and forming out of the toilet (at least I think that’s what it was doing).
-Several quick cuts of Bartleby (Affleck) descending from the church with his wings spread.
-A shot of Bethany jumping on Bartleby’s back, I think it was on the train.
-A few more shots of Salma dancing.
-The last shot we see is the Stygian Triplets on their roller blades with hockey sticks in their hands jumping through what looks to be a tear in the universe. Very cool shot.
-The release date was also confirmed as November 12th, and a new Dogma logo was shown (it looked like it had shadowing or something).

After the trailers, Kevin answered 5 or 6 more questions (even though the organizers guy told him only one more) and then was given a a big round of applause. As we walked out, a big crowd was surrounding him. So we headed out the door and took the 2 hour trip home. I think Malcolm Ingram might have been there as well, but I wasn’t sure. I thought I saw him talking to Bryan Johnson at one point. I never saw Mewes there even though he was scheduled to come. He might have been around and I just didn;t see him though.
All in all, a very cool trip. It’s always fun to hear Kevin’s Q & A sessions. – Zeebadaboodee

I went to the con yesterday and I thought I’d send you my feelings on it.
When I walked in I felt as if mysteriously, I had been transported to the opening set of ‘Chasing Amy’. There was poeple in costume, comic books everywhere, black draped signing booths and those framilar one sheet pressboards displaying comic art. What was odd though, was that I knew a hell of a lot of people there.
My cousin Tracey Lee and I wandered the booths (“Oh look! Buffy stills!”) taking everything in. and I must admit I did feel out of place. Not that I wasn’t one of those comic book lovers, I had just never so blatently announced my lunch time activity of old. And well, my framiliarity with Archie and X-men helped none to disolve the fish-out-of-water feeling.
Rounding a turn arround the vacent ‘star’ signing booths, I found the view askew table. More importantly, I spotted Bryan Lynch and lost it. My face flushed and I couldn’t stop smiling. Since the Stash Bash I had developed a certain fondness fro Bryan and I think it showed. So I went over, perused the goods and well, tryed to talk to him about ‘Vulger’. I felt like a geek by being so embarassed, ane as is my unfortunate way, I told him as much. Then I had to move on and calm down for a while.
When I finially got up the nerve to return to the table, Walt was there. And man, what a salesman he is. 🙂 Well, I love Walt too and I told him about being a nerd arround Bryan and he found it funny and bla, bla. All the stuff was well priced. They had T-Shirts and Jerseys, Jay hats, Gay and Silent Bob prints, Action figures, scripts, even an old bionic man sasquash character figurine. It was all well priced, and not insanely marked up liek teh other booths: the script book cost $18, which is cover price. I bought my stuff and beat a hasty retreat.
By now the lining up for Kev was beginning. I’d say that there were about 75 people in front of me and just as many behind me. They had to stop the line when it seemed that an impossible amount of people had shown up. Kev showed up on-time, I suppose. He stood at the booth for ten minutes talking with some tall guy in a purple shirtbefore coming to the table. When he walked over we were all excited. But, after a half hour of him signing the line HAD NOT MOVED! So a guard came arround and put a limit on of ten things to sign (ten things!). We did start moving then. But about a half hour later another guard came by and put a five item limit on Kev and informed us that he only spends between 30-45 seconds on each person. Which I found out was untrue. He signed many things and spent a lot of time on the people.
I got to the front right at 8:30. I only remember the buzz phrases I told him. Like when I said that I had decided to “throw the dice in and see where they land” about a screenwriting career. (Lord, at least I didn’t exactly quote “Good Will Hunting” ver batim) But he was a really cool guy. They all were and I really enjoyed it.
At 9:00 when the bulding closed, he was still signing so those devoted fans would not go home empty handed. I think it’s really great how he cares about his fans, and writes personal messages on the stuff (although the jaded part in me thinks it might be to ward off dealers). He didn’t mind that I blammered on about a billion different mindless things. He smiled and, if I can be so assuming, achually enjoyed meeting every single one of us.
Anyway, that was it as I saw it :). – Keri-Jade

I have always wanted to meet the god they call Kevin Smith but I thought to myself, Derik you live in Canada it will never happen but then it seemed God was smiling down on me when I found out about the Canadian National Comic Convention. So after about 2 weeks of beging my parents, they said they would bring me. I counted down the days for at least a month until it had finally came the eve of the expo. I sat down got got my movies together ( the Trilogy of course) so Kevin could sign them and even watched Mallrats just so I would be pumped to meet him. I got up early in the morning because I live an hour away from Toronto and I wanted to get there early. But tragedy struck we got lost on the way so I ended up arriving at the Expo at around 1:00 but I was all right Kevin’s signing appearance started at 1:00. So I got bought my day pass went up stairs and went straight to where Kevin was signing I was all excited with my videos clenched in my hand I was thinking what I was going to ask him but then the dark cloud went over what was supposed to be one of the best days of my life (this may be extreme but Kevin Rules). I found out that they were cutting the line right in front of me. I was crushed all this wait for a 5 second glance of Kevin. The day brightened a bit when I saw Walt Flannagan and Bryan Johnson working the View Askew Booth I got them to sign my copy of Mallrats but it just wasn’t the same with out seeing Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes. SO THIS IS A WARNING TO ALL MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE RIGHT DIRECTIONS AT ALL TIMES BECAUSE WITH OUT THEM YOU MAY ALSO MISS WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN THE HIGHLIGHT OF YOU WORTHLESS PATHETIC LIVES. – Derik Whitehead

My day (at the con) began with a trip to the Viewaskew booth, manned by Bryan and Walt, from there I attended Kevin’s signing. Although he was only suppose to sign for an hour, I went back 20 after he was suppose to finish, and he was still signing. There was only one problem, NO JAY!!! Kevin told me that Mewes would not be attending at all. Ah Well, maybe next time. – Matthew Seiden

I went to the radio station today and Met Kevin for the first time, and it was really great. I was finally able to meet my idol.Kev showed up at the station on foot, in I think the same thing he was wearing at the MTV awards, Grey joggin shorts, View askew t-shirt, and the black Zip up sweater with the hood.
The Interview went well. Some of the things they talked about was Dogma of course, Alannis and her part in the movie, The kiss that Ben gave Kev on the MTV movie awards. and a bit about Jason Lee and and his success from being in ‘rats and ‘Amy, You’ll hear all this when you get the tape. After the interview, Kevin came and spoke the small handfull of fans that turned out. I got some pictures taken with him, and also of just him during the interview. when I get the developed, I’ll scan them and send them off. He also signed some stuff too which was cool. I got my Clerks comic signed by him and the Oni double feature with Walt Flanagan’s dog signed.
So anyway, Just thought I’d let you know how it went.
Sorry, but I couldn’t get on the air, If I did, I definatly would have givin you the plug I said I would. – Trev Welsh

Nothing too exciting, Kevin appeared as scheduled to sign interviews, he was looking good, if not a bit tired. They cut the line off before I got there at 7:15, and I ended up having to pay someone to get my DVD covers autographed for me becuase the guy who was running the line (some fatty with long hair, I believe he worked for the convention center) gave me a hard time about gettting in line. From what I’ve read about previous signings from you guys, I figured Kev would have stuck around a bit later to give everyone a shot at getting an autograph anyhow. I would’ve stayed till the con closed, but I had to have the car back home tonight to Buffalo, so I’m not quite sure how late Kev actually stayed. I’m kinda bummed that I’m going to miss seeing Jason and the Q & A’s, but I’m sure you’ll get the scoop on those from someone else. – The Beastard

      Hey kid-os….

You have heard from my partner in Crime Archemedies aka Dale Glandfield in the past with DVD news from Canada and we bought two wonderful mint chasing amy sountracks (heheh)….

I am Joel/Jambalaya and am freshly back from the Comicon in Toronto. Other than almost being killed twice on the way home on my motorbike the day was a success…

Mr Smith was here 3 days – about 2 hours a day to sign and then an hour Q & A – today was almost 90 minutes. Cost to get in was $10 CDN which was a deal at any rate. Brian and Walt were at the booth (the only legitimate beef I have which was the Canadian prices – DVD’s for $50) but also good news – I got some great prices on other stuff at the booth – the Vulgarians Jersey was $55/$60 and a suposedly limited Gay/Jay photo for $55 CDN – the whole thing rounded to $100 even – what swell guys.

I had travelled Canada for a year and came back with only my copy of Clerks – had the chance to catch Kevin/Mr Smith on this and he gave me a shout..heheh… Also had collected a Newspaper article referring to Degrassi High and the school it was shot at and a reunion last week – alas he had seen it.

Snippets of memory from today –

        * We saw two perspective Dogma Trailers. I’m a person who went to Star Wars not knowing the little boy was Anakin as I wanted to now nothing. In Chasing Amy, I kept wondering when Amy was going to appear. I decided to stay – one was a Miramax Trailer the other a Scott Moisier (sp) trailer. You likley have seen both or either. I cried with emotion as it broke out.

        * Kevin will be back in Toronto September 11 for the premiere at the Toronto Film Festival.

        * He detailed the plots from all 6 sequels, told us of a bit which had to be elimintated which was a spoof of schindlers list and the flintstones where the characters got sent to ausrock. The good news is it was animated and may appear in some non-network function such as the series on tape.

        * He said Jason was doing ok but with hesitation – he spoke almost of hope when mentioning that if he was serious after Dogma he thinks Jay could get lots of serious acting work and that he is wonderful in it.

        * Apparantly back in Red Bank tonight.

        * Was asked how religion affected his work and political life and I cant quote him but answered well. Two thins I do remember is he figures God is worried about something more than swearing and that he would continued do projects he alligned with morally.

        * Two things never to ask – Whats a Nubian and What about Superman. Both are tired….

        * Reporter asked if he would ever return to Super 16 and he said that gladly he would shoot in that format again.

        * Does not want to shoot whole movies in black and white but would consider sections…

        * Someone said they drove 18 hours from Nova Scotia, couldn’t get an auto (because of lines) and asked if they could interrupt the Q & A to get one. He said no. Then, laughing, let him up.

        * Someone asked permission to make a play of Chasing Amy. Again no. Miramax of course has the rights he said they could ask and they would be told no. He revealed, however, that he does get the rights to Clerks back, only in England in like 25 years. Perhaps this was humour…

        * The hosts asked him to leave the stage several times before he did due to time – he stayed untill they practically dragged him off.

        * Still claims not sure of next project, though would be interested in a Grendel story or take a pay cut to do Degrassi 2000…this got a good laugh – the set is all of about 15 minutes away.

        * He was wonderful, patient and quite funny. His swearing and dry humour may have turned or scared some away but I thought great. – Jambalaya

Went down to the convention Saturday! First time in a long time that I attended one of these shows.. and was generally pretty impressed! No Jason…. Sigh!! Special thanks to Kevin for NOT charging for autographs! Didn’t realize that a lot of the other “celebrities” do charge! Got three things signed… and Kevin was great to talk to again! We basically chatted about DVD’s and what not! (By the way, the view askew table was selling the Mallrats DVD for $50 and Clerks for $60!!! Way to damn expensive! One thing.. we chatted about the upcoming Canadian release of “Chasing Amy”…. And it doesn’t look good! Kevin said that he didn’t know a thing about it (besides reading about it on newsaskew I suspect). From what he read the “features” sound like what was on the Criterion Laser Disk… and he said it called Criterion to see if they had sold the rights to the extra’s.. and they quickly told him “No.” So… from what Kevin told me, it’s unlikely that the Canadian company has the rights to any of the extras!!!! Guess we will see at the end of September! Might turn into a collector’s item. – Mr. Black

My friend and I left for Toronto at midnight Friday night. We drove all night and being from FLint, Mi the trip took about 7 hours. We arrived in Toronto at 7:30 or 8:00am, the city was alive already but my friend and I were running on no sleep and feeling dead. While he slept I read because with all the excitement there was no chance of sleep. After waiting hours to get into the show and searching for Kevin and Jason, we heard a announcement in the distance that Kevin would be making a presentation at the Planet Hollywood down the street. My friend and I rushed down the unknown street in search of planet hollywood, as soon as we located it we rushed inside.
It was 11:30 and Kevin was due around 12:30 so we sat and waiting sipping on drinks, watching the passers by that were coming into planet hollywood not knowing Kevin was going to be there but rather picking up a souvenier shirt. At about 12:45 I saw Kevin with his wife and a group of people, I was amazed that I was actually seeing him in the flesh. He came in saying hi to people and making his way to the back. 10 minutes later he came out and made his way to the stage they have set up. Kevin was presented with a planet hollywood jacket. He looked like he was happy with the gift. After the presentation I thought would be the key time to get my picture with Kevin so I made my way to him. As I shook his hand he looked like he wanted to meet me, but he had to make his way outside and get his picture taken by the Toronto reporters. I asked him for a quick picture and he said “Can we do this outside” so I said of course, naturally. And when we went outside he was swamped with picture takers and fans so I couldn’t get my picture taken with him, I was dissapointed and figured my last chance was to rush back over to the convention and wait in line.
My friend and I started to run to where we knew his line would be, looking back we could see Kevin in the middle of a brigade of reporters, fans, and just people he seemed to bring along with him. It was interestig to look back and see him doing walking interviews with the same people that were asking me what I thought of Kevin Smith, and where I was from and what I knew a hour earlier. My friend and I ran past the masses of fanboys and fangirls looking for variant issues of X-men and Battlechasers, I would be one of them if I wasnt running to the longest line I’ve ever seen.
After sitting in Line for about 10 or 15 minutes a security guard of sorts came out and cut the line…..about 5 people ahead of me. I thought of ways to sneek in line but came up short handed because of the abundance of security which was no more than volunteering geeks with powertrips, nonetheless they did have the power to kick me out. So I made my way to the front of Joe Quesada’s line which was almost through, and asked my new reporter friend to get Kevin’s autograph for me because I got cut off. The reporter was very nice about it and got the autographs for me, I was grateful. I dont know if my greedyness kicked in or if I just didn’t think a 12 hour round trip in my car was justified but I had to at least get a picture, even if I was not in it with Kevin I had to get a picture of him. So I made my way to the front and asked kevin if I could get a picture, I dont know if he remembered me or not but he gave me a big smile. I pushed the button on my camera and realized my film was out, feeling like a idiot I quickly reloaded and went back and got a very nice picture of Kevin.
I was dissapointed but I realized I was probably the most annoying fan he has, and then I realized he is one of the nicest guys I’ve met. And thats what I set out to do when I decided to make a trip to Canada, meet Kevin Smith and see what he was like in real person. My conclusion is he cares about the fans, he doesnt want you to go home disappointed and I didn’t. – WiLL LeBaron

Since I live in Toronto I was able to attend the con Friday night and Saturday, and it was great. Well, the con overall was kinda weak but Kevin was great.
I knew there’d be crazy lineups on Saturday so I wanted to get my stuff signed Friday; my friend and I lined up at about 7p.m. for the 7:30 signing. The line hadn’t moved by 8:00 and my buddy had to leave to catch his train (he lives in the sticks). I finally got to the front about 8:30. By this point they had put a five-item limit on signings; Kev signed my three trilogy boxes, my Daredevil #1 and Oni Double Feature #12. He personalized the movie boxes but not the books, and wrote on Clerks that the critics comments were lies lies lies!; on Mallrats he drew an arrow to Shannon Doherty and wrote “bitch”; and on Chasing Amy drew an arrow to Joey Adams and wrote “had her.”

I asked him if he was going to write Green Arrow, and he said it was going to happen, hopefully this year. (To which I responded a supremely intelligent, “Cool.”) Then I asked when and if he’d be back on Daredevil, and he said it looks like he’ll be back right after Bob Gale. (To which I responded with another articulate, “Cool.”) He then thanked me for coming out and for waiting in line for so long.

Saturday I went down at about 1:00 and got my first three issues of Daredevil signed by Joe Quesada (right beside him they were already cutting off Kevin’s line, even though he hadn’t started signing – glad I was there on Friday). I wandered the floor and got in line for Kevin’s Q+A about 2:30. He started about 3:10. In addition to the stuff I’ve already read on this page he said he enjoyed Episode 1, because he viewed it as a kids movie, and kids seem to love it (“You never hear any 10-year olds saying, ‘God I hate that Jar-Jar!'” he said). He said Jason Lee was originally cast as Loki but scheduling prevented it. He spoke about his time at the Vancouver film school and the documentary he, Dave Klein and Scott Mosier made – originally about a transvestite, but that fell through so they made a documentary about it falling through, which is now shown to potential students. Kev dropped out after four months and the other two finished the eight-month program; in the meantime he started writing Clerks.

At about 3:50 the show organizers told him he had 10 more minutes, which surprised him – he presumably planned to go on longer than 4:00 – so he showed the Dogma trailers, which were great, and he wrapped it up after a few more questions, to which the last one – “Any advice for aspiring film makers?” – he responded with “give good head.”

Glad I got the chance to see him and get my stuff signed by him; hope he liked Toronto enough to come back for future cons. – Josh Kern

My brother Nathan, myself and a friend went to the Canadian Comic Book Expo on Friday for two reasons: To meet Mark Waid, writer of “Kingdom Come,” and to meet Kevin Smith, my personal hero. We could only stick around for part of the night, aswe couldn’t afford a hotel room, and so it was Friday or nothing. We were three of the last people to get into line for Kev, totally missing out on Mark Waid because we arrived so late…but we were going to see Kevin.

Anyway, by the time we got near the man (mind you, this is all of our first time, and we’re all terrible fanboys), security came through the line saying that, because the Con was going to be closing, they didn’t want us to bring more than two items for Kevin to sign. So were didn’t…they rushed us through the line, and everything was cool because we got to meet him (I gave him a beanie baby seal and said, “Ooh, navy seal,” and made him laugh; that was the highlight of my day). As we were leaving the convention, though, my brother lamented not having bought a comic book he really wanted: Oni Double Feature #1. Even though the event was technically over for the day, I saw Walt out at the VA booth and wanted to see if he’d do my brother the one favor of selling him that comic, since we were going home that night, and he did. We stood talking to Bryan Johnson for just a moment…and Kev walked up.

Smith looks at the comic my brother just bought and just goes, “hold it still,” and signs it on the spot…and then offers to sign anything else we have, saying, “You’re the guys from Syracuse, right? You’re going home tonight? That kinda sucks; have a good trip.” He stood around talking to us…just chatting, about nothing in particular, for about a half an hour. It was really incredible of him. We left the con and drove the 6 1/2 hours home, including breaking down in Buffalo for about an hour, and were just so cooled out by the fact that Kevin was not only a creative genius, but such a completely decent guy. The Force is strong with this one.

Just thought you might like to hear about my trip to the Con. – Russ Decaf

I went down to the comic convention on Saturday to see Kevin, and were very uncomfortable being around all those Star Trek, Star Wars, Sailor Moon, etc. blokes. Dressing up in costume isn’t something I understand unless it’s Halloween (even then I don’t get it, but it’s fun because it’s a designated day to do it). My favourite of all the costumed (must refrain from calling them something like ‘freaks’) fanatics was an older woman who was in one of those scooters for people who can’t walk, who had on an ewok cowl and face makeup. This woman was hell on wheels. She was driving around the place like she owned it, and nearly hit a couple people that I saw.

I walked the floor a couple times, looking at all the stuff for sale. It’s pretty ballsy to be selling copies of Blair Witch and Matrix in a place with cops around, I wished they would get busted, but no such luck. Bought a cool Dark Knight Returns logo Batman shirt at one table, then went over to the View Askew table (That’s another thing. One of the tables was selling all of Kevin’s scripts in bootleg form. Some people are really bright) which was being manned by Bryan Johnson. He understandably, didn’t really want to be there. It was cool how normal a couple of guys, he and Walt Flanagan (who was there my second trip round the floor) looked. I bought a Clerks shirt, a box of Mallrats cards (I didn’t get a whole set. Does the guaranteed full set apply, since I didn’t buy it online?), the new Daredevil issue, and the first issue of J&SB since I hadn’t read it yet. I wanted to get a Dogma shirt but they only had larges dammit!!! I got Walt to sign my Mallrats dvd, since it’s his disc (that’s the only signature ever going on the thing). Kevin, do you know if he’s watched the disc? Cuz when I mentioned it being practicaly his disc, he didn’t seem to know what I meant.
Went to see the line for Kevin signing stuff. Too long. I went to get good seats for the Q&A instead of waiting in line.

The Q&A was fun. I knew most of the stories, so some of it pissed me off (I was just sitting there waiting for the Superman and Fletch questions). Before Kevin came in (Jay wasn’t there), we were told to chant Kevin’s name. I was gonna have no part of that shit. I clapped like a normal person. When Kevin got in his seat, the organizer said they had something to give him (a Maple Leafs jersey), and asked Kevin to stand up to recieve it. I busted a gut when he said that. Kevin was a bit confused by it to, but stood up so they could get their photo op. The highlight of the Q&A was Kevin calling the people in the audience who waited more than a night to see Episode 1, fags.

The Dogma trailers. These were what I was really waiting for. First the Mosier version, then the official version. Mosier’s version is definately better. A bit of blood’s been taken out for the new version, which is understandable but a shame since it did add to the impression that it’s gonna end in complete fucking chaos. That piece of music (I can never remember what it’s called) that was in the Mosier version (along with most other trailers out lately) really worked well and I missed it in the new one. The quality of the video was a bit iffy so I couldn’t really tell how well it’s shot. It looks like it really has the comical look that it needs to work, so that’s a very good thing. The thing that I missed the most from the Mosier version that’s not in the official trailer was the “…war against God!” line. That line kicked fucking ass and if it were possible (I know it ain’t) should be put back in the trailer NOW!!! Everyone in the trailer looks pretty good, especially Affleck, Damon, Rickman and Lee. Oh, and when everyone sees this, tell me if you don’t think Affleck looks like a complete flamer in his armour.

All in all a good day, and well worth the 10 dollar admission. I was gonna go back Sunday and tape Kevin speak, but my friend whose camera I was gonna use needed it back. Dammit!

Now I just have to hope with the new ticket system, I’m able to get tickets to see Dogma at the film fest. – Jeff

A girl at work’s husband had a booth set up at the con, and knew that I was going. She said that Fridays were less busy for autograph hounds, so I headed down with her on Friday night. Little did we remember that the CNE (Toronto’s summer fair) was in full swing, so we got stuck in traffic for an hour and a half or so. During the time we were stuck in traffic, I listened to Kevin’s taped interview with Edge 102 (incidentally Kevin, avoid the morning show next time – J.T. Walsh was on the Humble & Fred show and only a few weeks later, he died). I thought the intervew was pretty good, Kevin seemed really easygoing and down to earth. One of the comments he made sort of stuck with me: “I sometimes feel like I’m Canada’s adopted son” referring to the number of Canadian references in the films.

Anywhoo, we finally get to the con, head in, and I get in line with my Clerks DVD and a couple of comics for my friend’s husband. Eventually we were told to cut things down to 5 items, then later, 2. With about 20 more people to go (I was one of the last), the con staff started to turn out the lights. Thankfully, Kevin stuck around to continue signing. Anyways, I get to the front of the line, and he signs my stuff. I knew time was short, but I *had* to say something! All through the time I was waiting in line, I was running questions through my head “How much control do you get over video presentations of your films”, “How do you feel about the Canadian release of Chasing Amy”, etc. I opened my mouth to say something – ANYTHING, and what vomits out is “To me, you’re Canada’s adopted son too!”. Then I ran.
The worst of it, is about halfway through the sentence, my brain kicked in and started screaming “WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING YOU IDIOT!” but I figured that if I stopped halfway through, it would sound even worse. – Darren Hutchings
