The “Twitter” Report: New Podcasts, “Babble” in Hollywood, “Hit” Progress…

November 24th, 2010 @ 1:16 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • As we write this, the amazing Gaiman/Palmer event has taken over the castle in a sold-out shindig that we can’t wait to hear about. A slew of new podcasts hit the airwaves this week, all for your FREE listening enjoyment. Here’s Kevin with the tweet announcements on what’s dropped in the past 48 hours:

And finally, these two random tidbits reveal that the 1st draft of “Hit Somebody” has moved along, and spotted a fantastic Askew shout-out buried in an acclaimed film this year. Here’s those two:

Watching the adorable THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT. I wish I was a lesbian. Bonus Askew sighting: Ruffalo’s restaurant is Holden’s Potzers Inc.

Via @Solancer “how’s the progress on HitSomebody?” Moving along nicely. First draft pick @ThatDavidKlein read what I’ve got so far & dug.

As always, follow @ThatKevinSmith and it goes from his keyboard to your twitter feed in moments. And you won’t miss a thing!

The “Twitter” Report: “Red State” Locked, “Hit” Has a Lead…

November 8th, 2010 @ 12:50 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • With the completion of “Red State”, and no major appearances for a bit, Kevin is enjoying a small break, allowing him more time to tweet over the past few days. We’ve got a lot to share with you, including news that we’ll see “Red State” in less than SIX MONTHS, “Hit Somebody” continues to form on paper (with a lead actor to be revealed this week), deets on upcoming appearances, and tons more. Let’s take a look at some of the most noteworthy from the past couple of days, by topic.

    On “Red State”…

We’re picture locked on RED STATE. Running time: 97mins (w/credits). Sundance watches Monday. Contingency plan for a pass in place. #Ready

Via @itsthattroyguy “Any prospects on distro?” With a cast like ours & a $4mil budget? It’s a no-brainer purchase for any distrib OR studio.

@nosajdabeno “is the lack of time spent on RedState due to your lack of interest/excitement for the film?” Opposite: made the flick with all the unbridled need & desire of a high school virgin trying to fuck before his parents come home. Had 3yrs to prep; hit set, crushed.

Via @docERtrauma “What % of a film’s budget goes to talent vs operations?” In the coming weeks, I’ll publish our RED budget so you can see.

Via @swickster “depressed that’ll be at very least 6 months b4 Red State goes wide” Nah – six months from now, you’ll have seen RED STATE…

Via @solidpython “When do you unleash a RedState teaser upon the world” If we get into Sundance, I’ll put the teaser online. #FingersCrossed

    On “Hit Somebody”…

Via @BluMeaning “Now that you’ve done horror, any other genres you want to try?” Sports. Wrote another 10 pages of HIT SOMEBODY last night.

Via @KevSaund “Can you say who it is?” My HIT SOMEBODY lead? Sure – we’ll talk about it on BABBLE-ON next wknd: http://smodcast.com/babbleon

Via @AdamAbbott “RedState had a short shoot time. Will #HitSomebody be the same?” I’d say it’ll take roughly double the time we did RED in.

Via @LouisPJr “Your first choice lead for Hit Somebody passed” Already had my new guy shortly thereafter. And he’s perfect. #SeeItAllWorksOut

Via @Psymin1 “Why not film in Michigan?” That’s where we’re shooting HIT SOMEBODY next fall, once @ThatDavidKlein is done on TRUE BLOOD.

    On SModcast and SModcastle Shows…

      It’s SMunday SMorning! Time for #SModcast with me & @SMosier! SMod144: Dance 10, Looks 3 – http://smodcast.com/main.html #BarbarianBoobs

Get ready to gimme yer wallets & purses: I just posted the new @SModcastle schedule for the next 2 weeks! http://smodcastle.com/tickets.html

Via @fuckmikesmom “no more 2 shows in one night @SModcastle” Starting 11/17: Having Sex, w/Katie Morgan at 7:30, Bagged&Boarded at 9:00.

On past and upcoming live appearances…

Via @jaybwebb “too fat for 40 online!” Watch it FOR FREE, using the @EpixHD 14 day free trial: http://epixhd.com/kevin-smith-too-fat-for-40/

Via @tom_jorgensen “Too Fat for 40 was awesome, are we gonna get a longer cut on the DVD release?” Yup: all 4 hours of it, plus bonus stuff.

If you dig us… http://smodcast.com/getold …we will cum. Get tix for JAY & SILENT BOB GET OLD… LIVE! http://jayandsilentbobgetold.com

Via @KikiPassion “did you have fun in Kitchener?” I did. Great room, great crowd. Went almost an hour over because it was hard to leave.

Via @RChazzChute “I learned a lot from you last night in Kitchener. Here’s the piece about it: http://bit.ly/aB7ic7 ” Love it, sir. Go! GO!

Via @vincent404 “any plans on taking Smodcast on the road to Austin” Yup.

Via @mybrainhurt69 “r u goin to come to England and do a smodcast sir?” That and SO much more, sir. #StartSavingYourPenniesFor2011WithKevin

And finally, this one didn’t really fit any of the above categories, but sounds quite interesting…

Via @LovelyLocLady “Will you ever release a film via iTunes?” @JayMewes & I are working on a cartoon we’re hoping to do exactly that with…

“Red State” Wraps: Score Info & More…

October 29th, 2010 @ 6:09 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • With the final shot of “Red State” in the digital can, and the first edit complete and prepared for screening at a wrap party TODAY, Kevin’s said more about the film in the last 24 hours than during the entire shoot. Direct from the man himself, check out some details on the film’s lack of a score, festival plans, your shot at getting a song in the film, and even some “Hit Somebody” for good measure:

Just one more shot, and then we wrap my 10th feature since 1993. Great shoot + excellent cast & crew = a weird, unsettling little flick.

Via @iJack72 “Do you edit as you go” Yes, so the edit’s pretty much done now. I’m showing the whole flick at the wrap party Friday.

Via @serity12682 “wow, all done in 35 days?” 25 days. It was about as long as the CLERKS II shoot (& 4 days longer than CLERKS shoot).

Speaking of @ThatDavidKlein: he CRUSHED it on RedState. Wait’ll you see: BabyDave grew up. Fuck, he took a jump. Best looking flick to date.

Via @lexalicious “I bet KyleGallner kicked ass” He did. But to be fair, they ALL did. It’s an actor’s movie, sir. #RedStateIsAnActingClinic

Via @The_Iceman2288 “Are you bracing yourself for the inevitable conservative backlash?” It’s not that flick, really. #EveryoneGetsIt

@yourmelody1 “What’s your favorite moment experienced while shooting RED STATE?” Setting aside everything I had to do with it? Solely speaking as a movie-lover? Film-geek moment: seeing John Goodman & Stephen Root greet one another on their first day.

As for a moment of bliss? I’d give it to the 1st take of Michael Parks in the chapel. He was so good, he pretty much green-lit my NEXT film.

Via @Adictoalfilm “we can expect to see Parks in future Smith’s films” After folks see RED STATE? His dance card will be waaaaaaay too full.

@ReaperMattatt “who’s doing the score for Red State?” Leaning toward no score. The flick plays more naturalistically than anything I’ve done before. You don’t hear me in the dialogue anymore. Dunno how else to say it, but for RED STATE, a score would feel like bullshit…

Via @SoundInvestor “Blow to the Audio Community” Not at all: a sound mixer’s paradise – as sound effects BECOME the score. We were really on the fence about a score, and decided to go only to Howard Shore, who Jon & I worked with on DOGMA. If he said yes, we’d go with a score. If he passed, we’d go score-less. And Howard was willing, sight unseen, to give it a shot – but our window is VERY slim. He never could’ve been able to do it (but expect a Shore score on HIT SOMEBODY; homey’s a Canuck). So with our only choice out of the running, it felt like RED STATE was trying to tell us it wanted to be score-less. Or a woman; might’ve been expressing transgender desire. Either or. We found sound people we like & we’re gonna let THEM set the tone, all ambience-heavy, rather than saying “Hey audience: feel THIS way now.” Mind you: no judgment on scores. I love ’em & will want on on HIT SOMEBODY. But for RED STATE, a lack of score feels like the movie.

Via @MyersTheWise “We can expect a wink from the askew-universe?” No. RED STATE is all Act 2, sir…

Via @prowlerdante “Any licensed tracks in Red State?” Need a speed metal track. Might open it up to you guys. Email address forthcoming.

As previously promised, here’s the address for submitting speed metal & country music tracks to RED STATE: redstatesongs@viewaskew.com

Via @BrueBunny “time frame on when we’ll see anything from Red State?” We wanna debut at Sundance, so it’s up to them; if they dig it, etc.

    And here’s the “Hit” stuff…

Via @ajwooster “are you off to Detroit for the hockey movie now?” Aug/Sept – after @ThatDavidKlein finishes his first season of TRUE BLOOD.

Via @esien “A Smith hockey flick? Yes, please” We used RED STATE to figure out how to shoot hockey & make it feel as exciting as playing it.

Via @renfestkarla “How you going to be able to shoot at the Joe at the beginning of hockey season?” We’re not shooting at the Joe. #NotNHL

Interesting news there, in that it sounds as if there are already plans in place for the shooting locations and schedule of “Hit Somebody”. To see “Red State” and “Hit Somebody” come back to back will make for an exciting 2011, marking two completely new styles of film coming from Kevin. Stay tuned, we have a feeling it’s going to get very exciting around here in the coming months.

The Twitter Report…

August 24th, 2010 @ 11:26 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • A few cool bits dropped from the twitter of @ThatKevinSmith this week so far, including a few words on the “Hit Somebody” script, a peek at the recent Red Bank appearance and Kevin’s stint at the Geek Awards, and good news for those of you who missed those awesome Etnies shoes. Read on:

Even though RED STATE was written pre-weed, I’ve read StonerKev’s first green-induced script (HIT SOMEBODY). As much as I love ClerksKev, StonerKev’s a WAY better writer. Actually, all of StonerKev’s productivity’s through the fucking roof. StonerKev built the SModcast NETWORK!

Did #CopOut for the love, not the $$$. Gave up 83% of my salary cuz I believed. Still do. Glad I did, too – as RED STATE came out of it.

Via @LTfeatures “did you see the EPIX video from your birthday party? http://epx.ms/9Vez2X ” I look like DaveSemenko. AFTER he ate Gretzky.

Via @DailyMarauder “At the @GeekAwards. Movie winner Kev just got MrMoviefone to say the word cock” I was pretty proud of that. Big thanks.

Via @moviefone “Pics from the Geek Awards (& our award to @thatkevinsmith) : http://bit.ly/d5R51K ” I will cherish it always. Thanks, folks!

Via @rockerprod “any new etines shoes coming out soon?” @etniesCulture said they’re making 300 more pair in that style, then changing color.

We’ll drop our contact at Etnies a line to find details on when the next set of 300 will arrive, and what the next color might be — Stay tuned, we’re expecting the next 300 pair to sell just as fast as the first batch.

Via @Film_2_140 “has SWS read HIT SOMEBODY script yet? Is it Near done” No – been a busy month, so still on pg101. Hence he’s circling GOON.

Via @Film_2_140 “surprised he’s looking at Goon?” Nah: they’re ready to roll. HIT’s not ’til AFTER RedState – so mid-2011 the earliest.

The Twitter Report…

  • While we were trying to keep up with all the big news dropping due to the Con, Kevin’s been busy tweeting up a storm lately. Let’s take a look at some of the more noteworthy tweets from recent days. He’s back to record pace lately, like it was when he first hit Twitter, so we highly recommend you run a follow to @ThatKevinSmith to read them all – We’re just scratching the surface on the most newsworthy, but there’s so much more. Here’s a peek:

Via @thecolecash “How is “Red State” coming along?” Dave & I storyboarded for a few hours today. Found this amazing actress for Cheyenne…

Via @filmthreat “Where’s RedState being filmed?” California, sir. Up Whittier way. 80% of it shoots behind maximum security walls. #srsly

Via @sonic43 “Did you decide if RedState was shooting digital or film” Last I heard from @ThatDavidKlein, RED will be shot on a @RedCamera.

Via @Billy3152 “spot for hockey guys Leary or Sandler in Hit Somebody?” Massive cast, but I’m looking to surround Seann w/ CANADIAN actors.

Via @njosnavelin714 “You really believe HitSomebody’ll be the best film you ever make” 100 pages in, before we shoot a frame, it already is.

Via @StephanieClark_ “when do you start shooting for Hit Somebody?” Hopefully mid-2011. So let’s stop talking about it. Getting blue balls.

Via @SansomJam “Hit Somebody a comedy or something akin to The Wrestler?” It’s funny, but I don’t know if I’d call it a comedy. s’like GUMP.

Via @cmatthes1 “MCM mode of #CopOut gives me hope for the new BluRay extras” It’s pretty entertaining. Watched opening w/crowd & it crushed.

Via @bigstunz “Walt killed it in latest Smodcast” He CRUSHED PrimaNocta TELL’EM LIVE. Ask @BryAndWalt to put that 1 up on Friday. Pure gold.

Me & @SMosier sang FAMILY TIES & this dude mixed it into TIE’s opening credits: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e5LIs5W5JpM&feature=related

Via @MasterBruceSHH “Just read Gyre #6. Best ish so far. kudos for the last twist” Walt & I have been waiting a year for that splash page…

Via @denmark116 “How long do we wait for volume 2?” GYRE Vol. 2 starts up after the first of the year. And it’s a MUCH more familiar Bats…

Via @pcraig20 “how long the Green Hornet run is going to be” 10 issues. Then, I start begging @jimlee00 to do HORNET/BATMAN crossover mini.

Via @jace1013 “looks like #CopOut did well: http://bit.ly/9R3DyO #1 on every list” Congrats to the Movie Formerly Known As A Couple of Dicks

Via @lunchboxfett “When can we hear SModcastle opening night?” Not for awhile. Lots of banked shows to get up first: Philly, Billings, SF…

Via @dimmke “Can you stop making movies & just do #SModcast every day” Working on it, sir. Once we’re done with HIT SOMEBODY, s’possible…

@omfgitzjay “Will WYSMC be on SModcast Network?” No: to be a part of SModcast.com you’ve gotta know me REALLY well. Wanna know why? SModcast.com isn’t just weekly podcasts by me & my friends; it’s actually a more ambitious, ongoing project: SMod’s my autobiography.

This is my 10,000th Tweet. I’m using it to thank all y’all for following. You’ve given me enough juice to jump start the Act 2. Many thanks.

Our particular favorite Twitter highlight from the last week is a run that Kevin did on historical photos and posts back on July 20 and 21. If you didn’t see it, go back and seek out this stream. Tons of great photos and links in there.

“Hit Somebody” Still Planned for Detroit…

July 27th, 2010 @ 11:26 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Bret Jackson, Robb J, JD

  • Nothing new here, more of a re-hash of stuff we previously reported, but it’s nice to see that the Detroit Free Press has picked up on “Hit Somebody” , citing Kevin’s intent to film in that city. Here’s a couple quotes from Kevin from the article:

“I’m right now on Page 81 of the script. It’s big. I mean big in terms of long; it spans a life. We go from 1950 to 1980, and Seann William Scott is going to be my guy, the guy that plays the lead. It’s based on the song that Warren Zevon recorded that Mitch Albom wrote the lyrics to. (The song is on “My Ride’s Here,” Zevon’s 2002 album.) …

We’re shooting in Detroit, too. I reached Warren’s estate about the song, and they said, “You’ve got to talk to Mitch Albom because Mitch Albom controls that song.” I said, ” ‘Tuesdays with Morrie’ Mitch Albom?” So I got in touch with Mitch first by e-mail, and then he came to New York while I was there shooting “Cop Out.”

So he came and we hung out for about two hours, went downstairs and ate at the Ritz-Carlton down in Battery Park. At the end of it, he goes: “I gotta tell you, man, I felt like it was important to be face to face with you if I was gonna hand over the song. It’s a big deal.” He was like: “I don’t know how else to explain it, and I know there’s business deals and stuff later on. But I just feel like I wanted to see your face and to hear you talk about it.”

“…A lot of (the film) is going to take place in the ’70s. Detroit looks like it stopped in the ’70s, so we literally don’t have to set-decorate or set-design. We just turn on the camera and there’s an old building. It’s a great place and hopefully we’ll do it justice.

It’s almost like, for me, the closest parallel to it is “Forrest Gump” and not in terms of we’re gonna have all these amazing special effects in it. It’s just you follow one very simple person in a life that just touches everything throughout history and the sport, so it’s kinda like that. It’s ambitious, we’re not gonna be as good as “Forrest Gump,” but it’s ambitious.

It’s funny, but it’s not the comedy that I do. Like right now, honestly it’s still PG-13, there’s no cursing in it.”

“Hit Somebody” is planned to shoot following the completion of “Red State”, which goes in front of cameras in August.

  • As Kevin crosses the ocean on a cruise with wife Jen, he’s been checking in with some interesting tidbits, as well as continuing business as usual. Of particular note, revelations that the lead baddie for “Red State” has been cast, and offers on other roles are on the way. “Red State” will film first, with “Hit Somebody” hopefully right after.

  • Let’s take a look at the last week’s worth of tweets from Mr. Smith, with some highlights dead ahead. As always, follow Kev’s feed totally for free via the online Twitter portal :

Via @torontoist “The Toronto Underground Cinema Prepares to Rise Up: http://bit.ly/aOyRC8 ” Looks like a great place to SMod…

Via @Anthem85 “please buy a nicer mic for SMods. You get really distorted when laughing/loud” Part of the charm is sounding home-made, sir.

@chefcharming “bottom line, did Cop Out make money?” Only cost 32mil, so we’re all good & WB happy. Home video still ahead, too. But best of all? It led directly to both RED STATE and HIT SOMEBODY money (& lead). Oddly, worst reviewed flick was biggest bucket of win.

Via @Anthem85 “script of HIT? How many pages you in” 52. Wanted Canadian feedback, so I showed some to @MalcolmIngram. Ask him what he said.

Via @hockeynight “Nice to see that you’re including some Canadian compatriots in the process” Hockey Night makes first appearance on page 5.

There’s a fantastic series of tweets from Kevin recalling his wedding as he celebrates his 11th anniversary that’s worth the trip alone, along with the great before and after pic we posted above.

Via @bobbahawk “any chance you’ll be playing Carnegie Hall again? SModcast?” Yes. There was a June offer but we’re gonna wait ’til November.
