- GREAT news about the DVD release of “Live Free or Die Hard” comes to us via Movieweb today. While it seems that the previously mentioned Blu-Ray version will only include the theaterical version of the film, there WILL be a fully UNRATED cut of the flick as part of the two-disc special edition on standard DVD. Hooray! Not only that, but disc two of said edition will indeed house the complete conversation held on the Fox lot between Bruce and Kevin. The running time’s listed at 23 minutes, so it’s a bit shorter than was filmed, we believe, but still, better than nothing!

- Coming Soon checks in with the DVD specs of the upcoming Blu-Ray release of “Live Free or Die Hard” (November 20th in North America, an earlier October 28th internationally). The big extra we’re all waiting for is the extended chat that Kevin held with Bruce Willis on the FOX lot, though no specific word on its inclusion here. Of interest, though is an exclusive video game that will only be available on the Blu-ray disc, which features (we believe, at least) Kevin as The Warlock:
…actor and director commentaries and the exclusive high definition BD-Java multi-level strategy game “Black Hat Intercept!”
“Black Hat Intercept!” begins with a warning from ‘The Warlock’ (cult-classic writer, producer and director Kevin Smith) that a computer virus has been placed inside an unwitting Internet company’s mainframe by the infamous cyber-terrorist, Thomas Gabriel. As the team leader from inside the surveillance van, players must guide an agent into the building, outwit the building’s security systems and personnel without being detected and then wipe the hard drive clean before the virus destroys the U.S.
Additionally, the BD debut of the “Die Hard Trilogy” comes locked and loaded with numerous bonus features including deleted scenes, featurettes, actor and director commentaries, visual effect breakdowns, alternate endings, side-by-side comparisons and much, much more.
We were hopeful for an edgier cut of the film as well, after the whole R vs. PG-13 debate, though it looks to not be the case here — We’ll see that stuff as extra scenes. No word on Kevin’s involvement with the DVD commentary due to his cameo role, though the guy never met a DVD track he didn’t like — We’re hopeful that the man’s involved as much as possible on this one. We’ll keep you posted as we learn more.
And by the way — The disc will also support the new D-Box chair which, believe it or not, rumbles and moves in sync with the film. Basically, it turns your living room into a ride! Pretty nifty, though at over $10,000 for the system, not an accessory we’ll be able to afford anytime soon. Ah, technology.
- Some kind, albeiet brief, words about Clerks II’s DVD release in South Africa are here courtesty of the “Tonight” website.
- Aint It Cool runs a positive review of “Gone Baby Gone” including some praise for director Ben Affleck (minor spoilers in their review) :
If this is an indication of his skills, I’d like to see more from Affleck. He has pace, shots, and construction down.
- And finally today, has the Flying Car become the Flying Saucer? We’ll take two. See ya next time!

- Two fresh DVDs arrived at the News Askew offices this week, and we’re ripping through the shrink wrap as we speak. “Small Town, Gay Bar” has been out for a couple of weeks now, and is available for purchase through the Stash SIGNED by director Malcolm Ingram. This memorable documentary features a bunch of extras which we’ll be diving into for a closer look. In the meantime, check out a brief mixed review of the film through JoBlo. The film really is quite compelling, and crafted and edited together very nicely.
And then we have something we’re quite excited to see, as we haven’t seen it before – Marvel’s “Then and Now” Q&A with Stan Lee and Joe Quesada, hosted by Kevin Smith, is now available for purchase! The disc contains of course the full program along with heaps of extras, including bonus interviews, behind-the-scenes, and more. You can purchase your copy via the Then And Now site, with proceeds benefitting the awesome Hero organizataion. This one’s another must-have for your View Askew DVD collection.
Watch for more in-depth coverage on both of these discs here at News Askew next week.

- Both Dark Horizons, /film and Cinematical have picked up on our “SuperMax” rumor that we posted back on Tuesday. We want to go on record here and say that we were just speculating, widly speculating at that — And any announcement on that 10th film is probably at least a year away. A lot can change in that time. We like to speculate here, but that doesn’t certainly mean there’s any truth to it at all. Thanks for noticing, though.
- More critical kudos for “Small Town, Gay Bar” (on DVD this week) from Edge Magazine today:
“This film is heartening, funny, sad, informative, and in some parts downright offensive in its candid look at reality. small town gay bar was an official selection of the Sundance Film Festival and though it did not win any awards, it did receive a standing ovation. The film did hit theatres in a very limited release, but will hit its stride now on DVD, at least that is the hope of executive producer Kevin Smith, who has helped shepherd the project along since Ingram had pitched the film.”

- “Small Town, Gay Bar” hits DVD today — Malcolm Ingram directed this fascinating documentary that many of you have not yet had the pleasure of catching, lest you’ve seen it at a film festival or Vulgarthon. We first caught
this one back in 2006’s Red Bank ‘thon and had high marks for the film. Wanna hear the background and how Kevin came to be involved? Pick up your own SIGNED copy via the Stash today. Our complete review of the set is on the way, as well.
- Jason Lee IS David Seville in the upcoming blend of live action and CGI for the “Alvin and the Chipmunks” movie, and the great Cinematical has the teaser trailer for the film with the first look at ALL the characters. Lee features prominently. That film hits theaters this Christmas, though you can hear Lee as the voice of “Underdog” at the multiplex right now.
- “Jersey Girl” gets a quick mention in the Gloucester County Times when discussing the famous Paulsboro lighthouse:
Decked out in strands upon strands of Christmas lights and surrounded by fake snow, the Tinicum Rear Range Lighthouse was one of many backdrops filmed for Kevin Smith’s “Jersey Girl,” which premiered in 2004.
To the disappointment of many a lighthouse enthusiast, though, it suffered the same fate as the relationship between Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez and was left on the cutting room floor.
Despite being excluded from the film, members of the Tinicum Rear Range Lighthouse society say they have hosted upwards of 3,000 visitors per year since they opened the lighthouse to the public 10 years ago.
- Someone took that famous “Hey” video (which Kevin shot during the Train Wreck phase) and stuck it next to the original. It’s kind fun to watch them sync together, courtesy YouTube.
- Kevin’s GLAAD run-in during “Jay & Bob” is mentioned in this critic’s pan of “I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry” :
…But, to think that this compared to Kevin Smith’s Jay and Silent Bob Strikes Back, which got GLAAD in a hissy fit, despite Smith being so pro-gay and always putting the homophobic stuff in the mouths of his dumbest characters while everyone around them clearly knows better, it is just phenomenal. (In fact, some of the anti-gay stuff happened in editing, as Smith’s original girl group in the movie were supposed to include a lesbian couple, so his “anti-gay” stuff actually was a result of editing, unlike Sandler and James where it happened in the writing room).
GLAAD extorted $10,000 out of Smith, by way of a donation to the Matthew Shepard Foundation, as a form of public apology. Yet this movie gets the papal dispensation? Unbelievable.

- Amazon.com is offering a nifty deal whereby you can buy individual episodes of the excellent program “Dinner for Five†for $9.95. Kevin appears on three separate episodes (Jersey Girl ep., Daredevil ep. and a random episode with Stan Lee, Mark Hamill and JJ Abrams.). Or, you can click on the “create custom DVD†link at the top and get eight Kevin clips from various episodes put on to ONE DVD for the price of $14.95. If you do that, you also have plenty of room to add other View Askew alum clips inclusing clips with the likes of: Janeane Garafolo, Alanis Morrisette, Stephen Root, Carrie Fisher and Tracey Morgan. The best deal is, of course, the series set, with all four seasons for $59.95.
- “Chasing Amy†is one of the 40 choices in The Advocate’s survey citing the top gay-themed films of the past 40 years. Why not go complete a survey and make your choice or choices known? You can pick up to 10 flicks.
- Entertainment Weekly’s Popwatch celebrated Kevin’s birthday last week with this posting which links to a classic Q&A clip which also had some very kind things to say about his “Die Hard†turn:
What do you say to the man who’s heard everything? You say you’re sorry that you worried his cameo in Live Free or Die Hard would be grating — turns out it was way funnier than the trailer made it look. You say that you actually tried to listen to his Catch and Release commentary track with the film’s director, but got bored waiting for them to talk about Timothy Olyphant. And you say that you’re hoping someone asks him about Olyphant tonight — when Smith celebrates his 37th birthday with an onstage Q&A at Red Bank’s Count Basie Theatre — and reports back in.
- For those of you who can’t get enough of that way cool recent Crazy4Cult art show (we’re one of them), G4TV has another video for your viewing pleasure. This one looks like a “must see†next year, hands down.
- Superman Homepage has posted a positive, SPOILER-FILLED review of the upcoming straight-to-DVD “Superman: Doomsday†animated movie. The reviewer states that “There’s also a very, very cool Kevin Smith cameo that I won’t spoil either, but which will rock your world if you’re deep into the mythos/behind the scenes stuff.â€.
- And finally today, did you know that View Askew’s bash to celebrate the openings of the two comic stores wasn’t the only one? Check THIS out…And we’ll see ya back soon. Later!

- The venerable DVD Review website DVD Talk has GREAT things to say about the upcoming DVD for “Small Town, Gay Bar”. Some interesting tidbits from their review:
Co-financed by Kevin Smith, “Small Town Gay Bar” arrives on DVD with a full “View Askew” assortment of extras, giving the viewer a basic understanding of how this meager indie documentary came to be.
Shot with an accomplished visual palette (by Jonathon Cliff), using both stark and affectionate film and HD sources, “Gay Bar” induces a strong feeling of location and welcoming personality, which Ingram uses as clay to create this lovely snapshot of people gathering to celebrate themselves and an infrequent feeling of freedom. It’s an accomplished documentary, thankfully showcasing Ingram’s growth as a filmmaker, and provides a hopeful encapsulation of muted struggle inside a larger, overwhelming portrait of intolerance.
- The DVD for the hilarious “Hot Fuzz” hit stores yesterday, and is of course loaded with special features. One of them happens to be a 30 minute piece featuring the boys’ trip to America when promoting the film — In the last 2 minutes, you’ll catch a brief clip of the Q&A that Kevin hosted in New York, as well as a brief clip of him talking to the guys. “Fuzzball Rally” extra on the “Hot Fuzz” DVD. The extra is the documentary called “Fuzzball Rally”, and for the record, they refer to him as “Young Mr. Smith”.
- Matt Damon briefly mentions Kevin during this interview he did for Latino Review. Here’s the clip:
In terms of my hetero life mate, as Kevin Smith once said in one of his movies, we’re [He And Ben Affleck] not working on a script right now, but we’re talking about a bunch of different things. And his career has gone in this new and exciting direction because I’ve seen the movie that he [Affleck] directed and it is really good. It’s fantastic. And the performances are great. Every actor is going to want to work with him [Affleck] after they see this thing.
- After Elton (the male version of “After Ellen”) has a blurb from Kevin about directing the Heroes: Origins pilot:
Kevin Smith to handle the first episode of Heroes: Origins. Smith says that when he was offered the job, he said, “I would love to write and direct an episode about the two gay heroes…you know, the Japanese dudes. They’re gay, right?!” He also added, “If you can do an autopsy on a cheerleader, you can show a couple of heroes making out.”
- A few scoopers dropped us a line to let us know of a webcomic featured at Drunk Duck called “BLACKOUT DRUNK”. It’s filled with View Askew references, including a Clerks poster and the Quick Stop in the background, as well as a couple memorable quotes on pages 26 and 29. Viewer discretion advised, this is an adult-oriented web comic from what we’ve seen.

- One of the top questions here at News Askew has always been “When’s Chasing Amy X coming out on DVD?” This tenth anniversary set was something that we just assumed would arrive much like Mallrats X did, with a jam-packed edition including the film as well as that Q&A we watched them film at Vulgarthon LA, along with some other stuff. Well, we have the answer for ya now, sorta. Once again, View Askew is blazing the trail and looking out for the fans, by allowing us to get all that great NEW stuff without having to buy the film all over again (no “double dipping” here). We think that IGN said it best:
During his panel at the San Diego Comic-Con, Kevin Smith confirmed that a supplementary DVD will be released next year for his 1997 Spirit Award winning Chasing Amy. To keep the style of special edition versions of his movie going, Smith’s opus will get a special edition treatment, but rather than being packaged into a new “collectors edition” DVD set, a single disc will be released that is set to include a slew of extras to act as a counterpart to the Criterion Collection DVD released in 2000.
Set to be included with the new disc is a Chasing Amy documentary found on the web, a post-screening Q and A from a film festival as well as interviews and reflections from the cast and crew of the film.
Smith said to expect this new disc to be available sometime next summer.
So, there’s your answer. We’re sorry to say you’ll need to wait another year to see this stuff, but we’re sure it will be worth it — Criterion doesn’t mess around when it comes to their DVD work, and neither do Kevin and View Askew. It’ll be here before ya know it. As for a dual-disc set, at this point nothing’s been announced, so it looks like you’ll need to buy them seperately (if for some crazy reason you don’t already own it). We’ll let you know as we hear more.

- Of the 10 Must-See events at Comic-Con 2007, Film School Rejects lists Kevin as their #6 item :
That President guy may be known as the “leader of the free world,†but that is nothing compared to Kevin Smith — the leader of the geek world. One of Comic-Con’s most favored sons holds one of his famous Q&A sessions. And as the Comic-Con schedule explains, he will be talking about anything he damn well pleases. I think we can all handle that.
- Variety has a great (but far too short) article on Kevin’s speech for Google’s Santa Monica Speaker series:

HOLLYWOOD — Google’s Santa Monica Speaker series hit the Fairmont Miramar Hotel Thursday with an open bar for the techies and director Kevin Smith.
Google’s engineering director Thomas Williams introduced Smith to the computer crowd as one of their own: “He has two websites, 20 podcasts and a MySpace blog.â€
Smith wasted no time in saying, “The crowds I usually talk to, most of them don’t have jobs. I don’t know shit about tech — unless it’s what’s your favorite porn site.†On other things tech — Smith went on to say he was ambivalent about piracy (â€I used to buy scripts and bootleg moviesâ€) and that he had just gotten an iPhone (â€I waited in line on opening day — they applauded you when you bought it — they never did this when I bought a Sprint phone.â€)
Smith fought off “Fight Club†scripter Jim Uhls’ probing questions about the value of watching movies on something as small as an iPhone by saying, “They could project it on somebody’s areola and I’d watch.â€

- Comics Continuum runs a screengrab of an upcoming animated Kevin cameo — He’ll be appearing in the direct-to-DVD Superman Doomsday movie, a bit of fun irony for fans like us, since we know this is the storyline on which his famous Supes film script was based. We’re looking forward to seeing the whole thing, of course — If anyone catches it at Comic-Con, drop us a line! The rest of the world gets it on September 18th.
- It’s no secret that we’ve always been big fans of Jason Lee and his brilliant work, and we think that “My Name Is Earl†is the funniest thing on TV right now — So it’s with a great deal of excitemnet that we bring you all the details on the upcoming Season 2 release of the show on DVD. TVShowsOnDVD has the entire press release and cover art. The set features all 23 episodes, more bloopers, commentary tracks, deleted scenes, and featurettes.
