  • Kevin appeared on the CBC (Canada) Radio program “Q” this past Tuesday, September 9th. If ya missed it, like we did, we’ve got good news. The complete podcast of the appearance is available at their podcast download page or by a direct right-click and save HERE. He mentions wanting to not only FILM in Vancouver but SET a film in Vancouver somewhere down the line, interestingly enough. Also, he reveals that he’s just shot another Degrassi episode! Cooool.
  • Coming Soon runs a brief mention of “Porno” in their TIFF wrapup, as well as the promise of a big new interview with Kevin soon:

Those expecting raunchy sex and nudity in Kevin Smith’s Zack and Miri Make a Porno (Weinstein Co. – October 31) shouldn’t be disappointed, although there’s also a touching relationship comedy at the heart of it between the two main characters, played by Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks, who really elevate what might be seen as a fairly high concept premise. Fans of Smith should love it as much as his previous films, and except for one particular gross-out scene, it’s surprisingly classy despite all the usual swearing. (We have a great interview with Smith we’ll be running sometime soon.)

  • Nothing new here as the quote’s taken right from Kevin’s recent blog, but JoBlo did pick up on Kevin’s recent praise for actor Chris Pine playing the role of Kirk in the JJ Abrams “Star Trek” reboot. Check it out for a quick read, especially if you missed his praise for the film earlier in the month.
  • Catch Marilyn Ghigliotti’s award-nominated performance in “Dig” at the Socal Film Fest this Saturday, September 13th, at 11:30 AM in Huntington Beach Central Library. If you can’t make it to that screening, stop and say hello to her at The Hollywood Collectors & Celebrities Show on Oct 4th & 5th. Marilyn loves meeting her fans from the “Clerks” days, so don’t be shy, stop by and ask her for a photo or autograph!
  • Animated web series “The Nutshack” features main character Jack dressing up as Silent Bob in the third episode of their new second season. The Nutshack is on Wed nights, 10:00 PM PST on MYX or at the official Nutshack site.
  • On a sad note, we’d also like to acknowledge the passing of “Fletch” author Gregory Mcdonald, and express our condolences. Kevin has been a vocal fan of Mcdonald’s work for many years, to the point of hoping to adapt one of his books for a big screen “Fletch” revival. The project remains stuck in development, last we heard. Our condolences to family, fans, and friends of Mr. Mcdonald.

  • Congrats to “Clerks” star Marilyn Ghigloitti, who has been nominated for “Best Supporting Actress in a Short Film” at the SoCal Independent Film Festival! This comes from her work in the short film “Dig”. She’s nominated among some nice company as well, including J&SBSB’s Ali Larter. Major congrats to Marilyn, and GOOD LUCK! Winners Will Be Announced at the close of the festival on Sunday, September 14th.
  • Kevin and Scott had the smarts to pre-record a second SModcast last week, knowing this would be a busy week – So, SModcast #63 quietly made its way onto Quick Stop Entertainent this week. Kev and Scott are joined by their friend “Herb” in this episode — And we’ll give ya a hint, Herb is not a dude. Also, note the extended running time this week, as the guys have upgraded their recording equipment which will allow for longer running times, as needed, moving forward. The hilarious free MP3 podcast comes to you exclusively at our beloved Quick Stop Entertainment – Download and listen today.
  • As promised, here’s the ticket selling time — Tickets for the Woodstock, NY festival screenings of “Zack and Miri Make a Porno” go on sale at their website TOMORROW at NOON EST. Now you have the leg up on all the rest of the folks lining up for tix – Grab yours and enjoy the show.
  • IMDB picked up on a quick blurb from star Elizabeth Banks regarding her thoughts on sexism playing a role in the initial NC-17 rating for “Zack and Miri”.
  • The famous Quick Stop in Leonardo, NJ makes an appearance in the finale of the “Backyard Effects” series from DIY Filmmaker network called IndyMogul. See ya back here soon.

  • Yahoo Sports’ hockey guru “Puck Daddy” loves the hockey references in “Zack And Miri Make a Porno” – Take particular note of Traci Lords’ use of a hockey stick as the boom mic in this great shot. We can’t wait!
  • The Weinstein Co. has moved the release of the Kevin Smith cameo’ed “Fanboys” once again. The website reports a new release date of November the 26th. So we’ll have to wait a little longer to see Kristen Bell workin’ that Princess Leia costume. Dang.
  • Watch quick and you’ll also see a quick clip of the lovely Rosario in the opening of episode #1 of the new JoBlo movie show. And hey guys, we’re diggin’ the new show – Nice work. Want some more Rosario fun? Check out this hilarious video clip where a crew member whose mind is clearly wandering makes a pretty funny mistake. The player they meant to name is Panther tight end “Dante Rosario”. In the last 5 seconds of the video however, watch as Rosario Dawson is named player of the Panthers NFL game! Nice one, Fox. Is there anything Rosario Dawson can’t do?
  • Watch for a quick shot of a Clerks comic in this trailer for the very Clerks-looking upcoming indie punk flick “Scenes From Oblivion”.
  • The red band “Zack And Miri” trailer tops comment site Fazed.org today – Just the story and a bunch of talkback-style comments.
  • And finally today, on a fun note, the IMDB currently lists Scott Mosier as DIRECTOR of a 2009 release of “Fletch Won”! Either someone’s getting some crazy stuff by their censors or Scott’s been holding out on us…See ya next time!

  • A final note on Kevin’s Woodstock Film Fest appearance next month — While it looks like “Zack And Miri Make a Porno” will screen on October 5th, the press release now lists the date Kevin will receive the Maverick award itself as Saturday, October 4th. Get your tix accordingly for the events you’d like to attend.
  • The great Brian O’Halloran, still tops on the good guy list of all the View Askew personalities we’ve met over the years, will once again join ChillerCon as a guest next month, from
October 24th through the 26th. Brian will be on hand to graciously sign autographs, take photos, and meet the fans in support of his horror comedy “Brutal Massacre”. He of course loves meeting all his View Askew fans as well, so be sure and stop by to say hello to one of the greats. The con takes place in Parsippany, New Jersey at the Hilton. Wanna hear more from Brian? Listen to this MP3 podcast from Drunken Zombie where the man is interviewed.
  • “Clerks” was listed as a choice (and scored third) among the IMDB’s poll asking about the “Best Cult Movies Since 1983”. A very nice score against some tough competition, for sure. Bravo.
  • We love JoBlo because of all the reasons they find to put sexy chicks in their web postings, so their latest piece on their favorite slutty characters in film is something worth reading anyway. Two Askew connections as well — In the number 10 spot, Newbie Askewbie Elizabeth Banks scores for her role in “The 40 Year Old Virgin”. In the number 9 postion, Clerks’ Marilyn Ghigliotti ranks for her “37” admissions of guilt.
  • Recent new member of the View Askew family Justin Long confirms that there will be a sequel to “Alvin and the Chipmunks” which we assume will also bring back our pal Jason Lee. Long voices the character of Alvin in the film.
  • And finally today, a fun photo snapped by a fan while on a trip through Nashville, IL. Seems we can add “farmer” to Jay’s list of talents? See ya next time…

  • The webcomic called “Hijinks Ensue” continued their 2 part arc covering Kevin’s ability to see Geek movies before everyone else this weekend. You can catch our previously mentioned Watchmen edition HERE, and the continuation which mentions “Star Trek” HERE.
  • CORRECTION: It seems that “Fanboys” may see a theatrical release after all. In our last update, we mentioned a December 23rd arrival for the DVD, but it turns out that a September 19th release date was announced in San Diego. Certainly worth seeking out from the sound of it (and we’re sure that Kevin’s cameo remains intact).
  • We’ve been known to post some tidbits or video segements from Kevin’s Q&A sessions here, and of course there’s the DVDs, but it’s rare that we’ll see a long form Q&A with another of View Askew’s vets, Jason Mewes! Mewes has been hitting the convention circuit lately, promoting some of his upcoming film efforts, taking pictures, signing autographs, and the like. This one comes to us from Monster Mania and was posted in a four-part Youtube video filmed by one of the attendees. The worst part is probably some low audio here and there, so get your headphones or turn up your audio and listen closely. Mewes seems to work the crowd and relate to the attendees really well, so watch the dude work the room and enjoy!

  • Longtime fan Tony Teofilo had a chance to sit down with Toby Keith and Mallrats alum Claire Forlani to chat up their new film “Beer for my Horses”, and guess what — He asked her about “Mallrats” and working with Kevin again! It’s always neat to hear her British accent as she’s often seen playing American roles, so worth the watch just for that, and also to see that rare connection made to the Askewniverse. Nice job, Tony — And yep, for the record, she does say she’d do it again – Wouldn’t that be cool? How about Forlani for “Red State”? We’d dig that.
  • If you look closely at the first paragraph of this review of “Babylon AD”, you’ll notice that the reviewer mentions the superior nature of the “Jersey Girl” director’s cut to the theatrical version that most of you have seen. We’re still hoping that somehow that wonderful director’s cut can see the light of day. If a Vulgarthon comes up in 2009, let’s hope Kevin breaks that one out again.
  • While certainly not at all a laughing matter, one shopkeeper had some good humor in advance of Hurricane Gustav’s arrival in Lousiana with this “Clerks” tribute spray painted on his plywood window coverings. Stay safe, everyone.

  • While the release date is now a closely guarded secret, we can confirm the title for Kevin’s upcoming third Q&A DVD, filmed on his 37th birthday in Red Bank, New Jersey — “A Threevening with Kevin Smith: Sold Out”! More details in a week or so…
  • G4TV reports on the Crazy 4 Cult II art show at Gallery 1988 via an 8 minute video from premiere night. A nice new interview outside of the show with Smith and Mos is a highlight – Look at those crowds! You’ll also see a ton of looks at the amazing works that were on display and for sale. Can someone bring this event to the EAST coast as well…PLEASE???
  • Wanna read more about Affleck’s recent low key political exploits for Obama? The Boston Herald has the details on what he’s quietly been up to.
  • DVD supersite The Digital Bits reports that “Fanboys”, in which Kevin has a cameo, will arrive on DVD and Bluray on December 23rd. The film has only had a very small theatrical release, seen by few at festivals and such. We’ll keep you posted as it’s always looked like a fun little flick, shame it didn’t get more of a chance on the big screen.
  • Cinematical makes their own comments on Kev’s recent brief quotes to MTV regarding the next proposed Superman film sequel.
  • Entertainment Weekly once again remembers View Askew in their latest photo gallery, titled “The Cult 25: The Essential Left-Field Movie Hits Since ’83”. “Clerks” takes the #13 slot:

      13. CLERKS (1994)

Kevin Smith’s debut, about a day in the life of two service-industry suburbanites, was made for $27,575. It’s hard to tell where all that money went, but the cruddy lensing and muddy sound actually enhance the experience. This spitball of nonstop scatology and pop-cult obsessiveness — what are the ethical implications of killing independent contractors aboard the Death Star? — feels like a bootleg copy of an adolescent mind. SIGNATURE LINE ”I’m not even supposed to be here today.”

  • The amazing Crazy4Cult II gallery will remain on display through September 12th. Stop by the website to see some of the offerings for this year, (a direct link to the entire collection can be found here), but you really wanna stop and see this in person if you are in the Los Angeles area. After the 12th, this stuff goes home with the lucky buyers, so see it while ya still can. Just some of the coolest stuff you can put on your wall, for sure. Kevin was in attendance for opening night, and will likely check in soon with details on the show as well as notes on some of the works he’s purchased.
  • Scott Kurtz and PVP give a nod to Onomatopoeia (created of course by Kevin Smith in his famous run on Green Arrow) in the write-up below today’s strip (read the blog entry after you check out the strip).
  • Another photo of Mewes from Monster Mania surfaces today, this time with WWE wrestler the Blue Meanie.
  • And finally, in other Mewes news, we’ve got an inside track on the work he’s doing as the silent killer in the new flick “Silent but Deady”. Expect some exclusive shots and interviews soon. Until then, read up on what Jay had to say about the role, as The Windsor Star has the story.

Affleck To Star In Mike Judge Comedy…

August 23rd @ 4:40 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Justin McGill, Chuck K, Kevin Spellman

  • Variety reports that Ben Affleck has joined the cast of the next film from Mike Judge (creator of “Office Space” and “Beavis & Butthead). The comedy, titled “Extract”. He’ll play a lawyer in the film:

Actor is in negotiations to play the best buddy of Jason Bateman’s character, a flower extract factory owner dealing with workplace problems and a streak of bad luck, including his wife’s affair with a gigolo.

While we didn’t love “Idiocracy”, Judge’s last flick (though the first 10 minutes or so were pretty brilliant), this one sounds like a winner. With Jason Bateman on board, who’s been on a streak of his own these days, we’ll be lining up when this hits screens. Filming begins on Monday.

  • Kevin appeared on KROQ radio’s popular “Kevin & Bean” program yesterday, and as always our good pal Will has the hookup with the audio. Listen in as Kev sits in with the guys — Runtime is around 30 minutes. We’re now listening as we continue to write the update…
  • With almost a full year until the next Judd Apatow involved comedy, New York Entertainemnt publishes a list of “Five Movies to Get You Through the Coming Judd Apatow Drought”. One of them is, of course, “Zack & Miri Make a Porno”:

      Release Date: October 31
Featured Apatow acolytes: Seth Rogen, Elizabeth Banks, Craig Robinson.
Apatovian plot: Rogen and Banks star as lifelong friends down on their luck. After a fifteen-year high-school reunion underscores their lack of accomplishment, they decide to start their own amateur porn company. Then, inexplicably, they fall in love.
How Judd Apatow would’ve made it funnier: Jay Baruchel as a high-maintenance mustached porn actor with performance anxiety.

  • Kevin’s brief “Watchmen” comments continue to spread across the web and keep the film in the news. Entertainment Weekly was unable to get Kevin to elaborate any further, though also speculate the film will see running time cuts (sadly, the 3 hour version will likely never be seen in theaters, we’ll have to wait for DVD). G4TV also runs a similar article on the subject, and features the story in their daily video wrapup.
  • And hey, while we’re on the subject, Kevin caught yet ANOTHER top secret, highly anticipated flick, the JJ Abrams reboot of “Star Trek”, in a private screening. Trekmovie.com has the story.
  • We posted scans of it a few weeks back, but in case you didn’t read them, Wizard has now placed the excellent “Guardian Devil Director’s Commentary” piece on their website.
  • This goes through select sections of the comic saga and features comments from Smith, Palmiotti, and Quesada. Hardcover editions to celebrate the 10th anniversary are streeting on September 10th. Here’s a look at the main book as well as the special variant. We want!

  • A blogger from UK’s “The Guardian” writes of his experience meeting Kevin for a brief interview during the recent VisionFest 08.
  • Via an online poll down on their left sidebar, Paste Magazine asks what your favorite Seth Rogen film (so far) is — No choice for “Zack & Miri”, which we assume is because it isn’t out yet, though there IS a spot for “Other”.
  • Seth Rogen hits MSN’s list of “Summer Winners”, with a drop mention of “Zack And Miri Make a Porno”.
  • A new version of “Clerks” on DVD has surfaced in Australia, basically a trimmed-down 1 disc version of the superior “Clerks X” set we have in the States. If you don’t have a region-free player tho, at least it’s something.

  • Tickets for Kevin’s upcomming show in Hartford are going on sale a week from today – Monday, August 25th, at 10:00 AM. The show takes place on January 24th of 2009 so you’ll be making reservations pretty well in advance, but it never hurts. Kevin’s Canada gigs typically sell out. This link should have your tickets ready for purchase in a week.
  • The latest Myspace blog from rap artist MC Chris reveals a rough cut of a track deemed “too dirty” to run with “Zack And Miri Make A Porno”. You can listen to that one there, whilst Chris also DOES reveal that another song of his WILL feature in the film (though no clues to which just yet). Visit the official MC Chris site for more from the man.
  • Who watches the Watchmen? Apparently, one very lucky director. Seems that /Film also shares our jealousy over Kevin’s early watch of the “Watchmen”, currently our most anticipated flick of 2009. By the way, if you’re in that boat with us, you may want to sign this online petition to Warner Bros in the hopes that they’ll keep the running time intact (showing us the same film Kevin saw and not a shortened version).
  • For the last year or two, comic book artist Ashley Wood has been publishing a series of small art books called “Sparrow”. Each volume features a different artist. According to Mr. Wood’s blog, a member of the View Askew comics family, Jim Mahfood, will be getting his own volume of Sparrow sometime in the future (no release date is given). At $12.99 each for a 48 page, 6 inch square book isn’t the cheapest, but they’re very well done and worth the money if you’re a fan. Worth looking into for sure, as Jim was with View Askew in the comics world from the beginning.
