  • The great Cinemablend gives “Zack And Miri Make a Porno” the full rundown as part of their Fall Preview, scoring the flick a perfect 5 out of 5 on their patented “Excite Meter”. Way cool.
  • Video ETA gives the Askewniverse a respectable #4 spot in their list of movie back stories that would make a good standalone film:

Clerks/Mallrats – Actually, you can probably insert any and all of Kevin Smith’s view askewniverse movies. The fact that the dude has created an entire universe upon which his two main characters Jay and Silent Bob and countless others mingle makes Kevin Smith like the creator of Sims, but for funny movies. Whether it’s a chance encounter in a bedroom leading to an alternative lifestyle or watching Smokey finally “give it” to the Bandit, John K throws the best parties and we desperately want an invite.

  • And finally to cap off the week: Timeout.com lists their “Inglorious Bastards” cast wishlist. Coming up as one of the choices for the “Tech Guy” is non other than Kevin Smith himself. And heck, who knows, with Kevin’s past association with Quentin, maybe we’ll see this happen? Mr. Tarantino, are you listening? With Smith and Tarantino being our faves in the biz, it sure would be a dream casting for us to see. See ya next time!

  • We’re getting reports that Kevin has been announced as a guest at the “2008 Wildwood Film By The Sea” Film Festival in Wildwood, New Jersey. Unfortunately, those reports are false (despite him being listed at the website. Kevin will NOT be attending this festival. You can always look to the right sidebar of News Askew for a complete, accurate list of upcoming appearances from Kevin and other crew Askew.
  • Empire Magazine runs a very cool “Guess The Movie Poster Letter” game this week, and we’ve spotted at least one of the letters to be from a View Askew flick from the past. Can you find it???
  • Empire also continues to prove their coolness by running a fantastic piece on the 50 Greatest Comic Book Characters of all time. Kevin scores a mention with the (possibly ironically) mentioned “Daredevil” coming in at number…37!!!
  • And hey, while we’re on the theme of lists, IGN scores a BIG win, yes, the #1 spot, in their top 10 “Movies within Movies” rundown. Yep – Applesauce, bitch:

      1. Good Will Hunting 2: Hunting Season (Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back)

In retrospect Good Will Hunting was an over-earnest bore, but at least its stars and writers Matt Damon and Ben Affleck had the good grace to parody their Oscar-winning effort for Kevin Smith. “Think about the paycheck” says Damon to Affleck on set, whilst Guus Van Sant counts a huge wedge of cash. As with the first movie, Damon has his knowledge of southern colonies questioned, only this time is retort is not an intellectual comeback, but blowing the guy away with a shotgun. “It’s hunting season! Apple Sauce Bitch!”

  • The creator of the hacker convention, Defcon, seems like he might be a View Askew fan, striking a very familiar pose in the last photo of this Wired article.
  • Wanna see a cool scan? In Australia, they’re relasing a DVD 2-pack featuring “Chasing Amy” along with “Slacker” — Yep, arguably one of Kevin’s best along with the film that inspired him to get into the biz in the first place! A very cool pairing, we must say.
  • Finally today, worth a quick look, the IMDB have added a few shots from the San Diego “Zack And Miri” panel to their stills page for the film. Catch ya again soon! Thanks for stopping on by News Askew today.

TVShowsonDVD has the announcement but sadly no details yet on any bonus material (we’d sure love to hear a running commentary track from Kevin with some of the cast or crew on the pilot or other episodes):

  • Celebrating the release of “Pineapple Express” (which had a very successful opening yesterday, by the way, congrats Rogen!), Jay and Silent Bob show up at number 3 on Rotten Tomatoes’ list of “15 Memorable Movie Stoners”.
  • Film 411 cites “Dogma”‘s use of the song “Candy Girl” as a top use of a track in the movies.
  • For those of you who hate scans, you can also read Wizard’s excellent “Marvel Knights: Ten Years Later” piece over at their website. We ran scans of this as they appeared in the issue as part of our last site update.
  • Catch Askewers Sean William Scott and Elizabeth Banks in the trailer for the upcomign flick “Role Models” at the MTV Movies Blog site. It’s under the left pane under “new video” (no direct link right now, sorry). Looks like a fun one.

  • The video bandwagon continues on! Though the quality is pretty poor, those of you interested to see footage from some of San Diego’s “Zack & Miri” panel can find it via this YouTube Channel. We hear there’s a few spoilers peppered into the discussions, so be wary when streaming it up. You’ll need to scroll through the videos list at the bottom to find the segments, which are brief and chopped up.
  • A better video from the Con comes to us courtesy our beloved G4TV, where their correspondent caught up with some of the “Zack And Miri” cast, including the always hilarious Jason Mewes.
  • You want MORE video? Okay, one more topic for the day – More from last week’s historical “Spaced” signing at Stash West last week. Check out Mahalo Daily’s segment on the event, along with Spaced Invasion’s own coverage. All feature looks at the celebs, the fans, the great store, and fun interviews. Don’t miss both. We’re hoping to soon have some high res photos from the event, as our pal Albert Ortega was on the scene doing his professional photo work. Stay tuned.
  • Cracked Magazine employs a photo of Jay & Bob in their article on “The 8 Most Bizarre Patron Saints”.
  • Marilyn Ghigloitti thanks all the fans who stopped by to see her short film screen in San Diego last Sunday. Also, check out a flick she keyed hair and makeup on, “The Adventures of Johnny Tao”, starring Jason London (yep, Jeremy’s brother). Unfortunately, she can’t make the signing for her new film “Dead and Gone” next Saturday, August 9th, but she wanted fans to know that she pre-signed some discs and that the rest of the cast and crew listed will be on hand in Burbank. See ya soon!

More Coverage From The Con!

  • As reporters get back to work and catch up on the flurry of weekend activity from the media in San Diego, articles continue to come across the news desk regarding Kevin’s many panels, interviews, and revelations at the show. While the big reveal this year revolved around his return to comics with a Batman book, Kevin also showed audiences the first footage from “Zack And Miri Make a Porno”, hinted on upcoming projects, and of course trades jokes and jabs with some of the best minds in the film and TV business today.

Reading it is one thing, but let’s first start out with some live video. The Movie Blog presents choice segments from the now mythical panel featuring Judd Apatow, Zach Snyder, Frank Miller and, of course, Kevin Smith.

Here’s a rundown and snips from more press from this year’s San Diego Comic Con:

“…”Going into it I wanted it to look better than the stuff we’d done in the past. It kind of looks like a real movie,” Smith said. “The most important thing was how do you shoot sex because I’ve never done that before. … I wanted the sex to look much better than my sex.”

“…Even though the Visionaries panel for filmmakers features heavyweights like Frank Miller and Zack Snyder, it’s pretty much the Kevin Smith show all the way, with a little comedic support from Judd Apatow.”

“Also at Comic-Con, the writer and director Kevin Smith (“Clerks”) presented some footage from his new film, “Zack and Miri Make a Porno.” The comedy, starring Seth Rogen (“Knocked Up”) and Elizabeth Banks (“Meet Dave”), has been rated NC-17 by the Motion Picture Association of America, though Mr. Smith said he was hoping to have the rating changed to R. He told a crowd on Saturday that he edited and resubmitted the movie three times and that another hearing was scheduled for Aug. 4 to evaluate his latest cut.”

Cites that Kevin “received the biggest applause upon entering” the filmmakers’ panel, and that Zack & Miri “looks like it could be the funniest he’s ever made.”

The Comic-Con crowd certainly loves Smith, who has been to 15 straight comic-book conventions. Attendees kept him for almost an hour with questions, praise and the occasional stand-up routine.

“These are my people,” Smith says. “It almost doesn’t matter what kind of movie you bring here. If they feel you’re one of them – someone who loves comics, someone who really loves movies, they’ll get behind you.”

Kevin @ Comic Con – All Your Coverage Right Here!

  • Kevin once again took to the San Diego Comic Con this weekend, where he participated in serveral panels and revealed the very first footage from “Zack And Miri Make a Porno” on Saturday. The packed crowd were quit fortunate, as no footage from the movie has yet to be made available on the web. Kevin also appeared on a director’s panel and once again moderated the Battlestar Galactica panel, keeping quite busy at the biggest Con in all the land.

NBC Interviewed Kevin for a few minutes at the event, which we’ve got embedded above for your viewing pleasure. In it, he reveals they are looking to start shooting “Red State” early in 2009.

Here’s more coverage on Kevin’s antics from around the web:

…The “Zack and Miri” clip shown to the crowd of thousands featured a heated discussion between a gay couple played by Justin Long and Brandon Routh. Long’s character is a porn star who has appeared in various films with unprintable titles, and Zack (Seth Rogen) is fascinated.

Banks, who plays Miri, described the film as “a really sweet love story,” but Smith assured fans it was just as raunchy as any of his past flicks, including “Clerks,” “Dogma” and “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.”

The film is a departure visually, though, he said.

“Going into it I wanted it to look better than the stuff we’d done in the past. It kind of looks like a real movie,” Smith said. “The most important thing was how do you shoot sex because I’ve never done that before. … I wanted the sex to look much better than my sex.”

“You’re like the Miley Cyrus of porn!”

      — Kevin Smith, after finding out Traci Lords made her first porno when she was 15.

Lords just completed filming on Smith’s latest “Zack and Miri Make A Porno” which the the two are promoting at Comic-Con.

AUDIENCE QUESTION: As filmmakers, I wanted to ask who in the past or present as filmmakers have inspired you in your careers to get involved in this genre?

KEVIN SMITH: For me, it was likely Jim Jarmusch, Richard LInklater, Hal Hartley that made me want to get into indie film.

JUDD APATOW: Well, Kevin Smith laid down the track.

SMITH: Yes, b—-, yes. [Smith and Apatow hug.] Say that s— in print, motherf—er. I’m taking that into the studio, ‘You see what fucking Apatow said.’ Give me a job.

APATOW: But also Hal Ashby and Cameron Crowe…

      SMITH: F— those guys.

HW: Kevin Smith likes to write long passages of dialogue about his favorite films, what did he choose for this one?

SR: There was a big chunk where I talk about Clerks for like three pages. [laughs] We make fun of a lot of movie titles. There is a Sleeping with the Enemy moment.

“This show is so good that it’ll get you pregnant.”

And that’s what “Clerks” director and fanboy icon Kevin Smith brought to the “Battlestar Galactica” panel that he moderated Saturday. A bit of raunch, a scattering of F-bombs. And I don’t mean “frak.”

…moderator Kevin Smith, who introduced himself with his trademark coarse wit: “I have nothing to do with this show, which is probably why it is so f—ing good.” (No fraks for Mr. Smith.)

“So what’s up next for Smith? It looks like he’s still trying to find a home for his horror movie, Red State, deeply anticipated by fans but without a studio as of yet. After that, Smith grew a little tight-lipped, but hinted that it might be a movie set in space.”

And there ya have it! Space, eh? We’re thinking that “Ranger Danger” may come to be after “Red State”, though right now, all eyes are on “Zack & Miri”, which is 3 months away from theaters. Whoohoo!

  • The trailer for “W.”, the upcoming Oliver Stone George Bush flick, has leaked to YouTube. “Zack And Miri Make a Porno”‘s Elizabeth Banks stars as the female lead. Since the trailer is very George-centric, we only get a brief glimpse of her in the role.
  • Those of you with On Demand service on your cable may notice that HBO currently has the great “Mallrats” as a choice. So, if you’re too lazy to get up and put in the DVD, there’s an even simpler way to check it out. Access HBO’s complete On Demand schedule at their website.
  • Against tough competition from “Schindler’s List”, “Clerks” ranked second on a recent IMDB poll asking viewers their favorite contemporary Black And White flick.
  • Co-creator Seth Green cites “Clerks” as the influence for one of the skits on the new “Robot Chicken: Star Wars” DVD. Find it on the “chicken nuggets” extra.
  • And finally today, congrats to Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner, who announced they’ve got another baby on the way – Kevin got quoted in the story, mentioning he recently had Affleck over to watch “Zack & Miri Make a Porno”.

Mewes In The News!

July 24th @ 5:14 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Will Wilkins, Nadia Sandhu

  • We’ve got a double dose of Mewes film news today, one’s on its way to theaters, and another soon to be filmed.

NETHERBEAST INCORPORATED is a quirky twist on the vampire tale set in modern day corporate America. Employees of Berm-Tech Industries, Inc. have kept the family secret for a long time. For years it has been business as usual, until the top “vampire” in charge, contracts a dreaded disease and invites the first humans to work in the office in more than a century. Soon the new employees discover that some of their associates are not what they appear to be, especially the dead one in the cubicle with a wooden stake through his heart. It will celebrate its limited theatrical opening at Harkins Valley Art in Tempe, Arizona on Friday, September 12th. See a trailer over at YouTube. Mewes plays a supporting role.

Also today, it’s just been announced that Jason Mewes will play the lead role in genre picture “Silent But Deadly.” From the press release:

“This satirical take on the slasher flick will mark the feature film directorial debut of eight time Much Music Video Award (MMVA) winner Stephen Scott. Filming over 21 days on location in Chatham, Ontario this August, “Silent but Deadly” takes a fresh look at a classic genre staple of the 70’s and 80’s. This slasher flick doesn’t revolve around immoral teens, but instead our mysterious serial killer takes aim at the cesspool of sin that is a Hollywood film set, as he unleashes his own brand of retribution on the cast and crew.”

So, a starring role for Jason. Very cool indeed. We’ll keep our eyes on this project and let you know as we hear more.

Congrats to Jason on his continuing film career, and continued success!

  • Kevin is the guest on the latest issue of the excellent /film podcast (appropriately titled “/filmcast”), discussing “The Dark Knight”. The webmasters have been kind enough to post the entire cast, as well as JUST the Kevin segment for download. As a warning, Kevin DOES reveal spoilers for “The Dark Knight” in his chat, so listen only if you’ve already watched it, one of the greatest superhero/crime epics of our time.
  • Thanks to one of our commenters for letting us know that the quite cool Paste Magazine took notice of our story on the current NC-17 battle for “Zack & Miri Make a Porno”. Thanks, folks. If you’ve got a few web minutes to spare, go give their website a look.
  • A current poll at comingsoon.net (scroll down to the lower right of the screen) asks, among a long list, what flick folks are looking forward to hearing about at the San Diego Con this weekend. “Zack & Miri Make a Porno” is one of the many choices, so if you’re looking forward to it, why not go and cast your vote?
  • The Rock & Shock Convention website reveals a new appearance for Jason Mewes and Brian O’Halloran — They’ll be attending this year’s convention at the DCU center in Worchester, Massachusetts on October 10, 11, and 12. That’s all the info we have so far, but we’ll dig in and see what else we can discover. Typically, both guys appear on all days of a con, so we’re betting you’ll have a chance to meet the guys and get some signatures.
  • Finally today, this just in — Another reason to hit the San Diego Con this weekend! Let’s face it, you probably by now know if you’re going already. We’ve just gotten word that “Clerks” star Marilyn Ghigliotti will be in the house for her first trip to the Con this Sunday. She’ll be attending the kids film festival portion for a short film she did for a friend that wrote and directed the piece. Here’s the info for Sunday:

      Program #4 — 1:30–2:30
      Short films for all ages
      Dig
      Gena Shaw
Misunderstood by her parents, quirky, 9-year-old Charlie White acts out in a way that at first seems defiant but ultimately changes her parents’ perspective of their daughter. (L) (11:00) (USA)

Marilyn loves to meet her fans and is always incredibly gracious. Stop by and say hello if you’re in the area on Sunday.

See ya back here soon with more news from this busy week and weekend.
