  • The great /film announces that Kevin will do a LIVE review of the already record-breaking “The Dark Knight” on their live webcast, called /Filmcast. You can catch it at their Live website this Monday at 10 PM EST / 7 PM PST. You can watch and participate in a live chat there during the broadcast. The guys are hoping to ask Kevin some questions about “Zack & Miri Make a Porno” as well, so it’s well worth tuning in. See ya there.
  • Seth Rogen continues to break new barriers of coolness with an episode of animated powerhouse “The Simpsons” next season in which he wrote and will star. Aint It Cool News got the scoop:

The “Simpsons” episode written by Seth Rogan logline: Comic Book Guy creates a super hero, it’s turned into feature film, Homer plays the hero. Seth plays his personal trainer. Homer gets into great shape, but then the movie is over and he can’t afford the personal trainer anymore and his life becomes hell.

And of course, we’ll be there. But with “The Simpsons”, that’s a given. Now if only we lived close enough to Universal Studios to try out that new ride

  • Variety reports that Hungary’s TV2 has already acquired first run rights to (eventually) broadcast “Zack And Miri Make a Porno” on their channel – And this before it’s even hit theaters! That’s smart business right there.
  • Here’s that info we promised on the Texas screening of Brian O’Halloran’s “Brutal Massacre: A Comedy” – It’s happening at 6:30 PM on Sunday, July 20th.and the Granada Theater in Dallas. Call 214-824-9933 for tickets and info. Purchase tix prior to the 20th and save $2.50 on each. No word on which cast or crew will be at this showing, at the moment.
  • And finally today, for those of you “Clerks” fans wondering what the average jizz mopper makes these days, seems that upcoming video game Postal III is bringing this trade back into the spotlight. Man, those guys at Running With Scissors are nuts. We’ll see ya next time…

  • More on Rogen and improv in “Zack And Make Make a Porno” via MTV Movie News this week, where Rogen again gives a few hints on what we’ll expect as far as written dialogue vs. the made up stuff in the film this Fall:

“I told [Smith] I’m not going to change everything, but if everyone just knows they can change things, I find that it makes all the actors seem more real, like it’s actually a conversation that’s happening,” Rogen remembered of his early discussions with the man whose screenplays have been nominated for three Independent Spirit Awards. “So, he was actually not strict at all with the dialogue. We improvised a lot, we changed the words around, and [he hired] guys like Craig Robinson, who is an amazing improviser.”

Now, as long as the MPAA gives “Zack and Miri” an R rating, Rogen claims that audiences will find a new voice from Smith come October 31st. “I’ve seen the movie, and there’s a lot of improvised stuff in it, and it gives it that less-stilted feel. It feels more like a naturalistic movie,” he explained. “[In some comedies] you can just see the guy behind the keyboard writing it, you feel as though you see the guys reading it and memorizing it, and I don’t like that all…If it’s a movie that’s supposed to be real and take place in the real world, I need to feel like the characters are actually having these conversations.”

  • Brian O’Halloran will be appearing at J&R Music World (23 Park Row, New York, NY) on July 22, 2008 (this Tuesday) to promote the release of the hilarious comedy “Brutal Massacre”, greeting fans and signing autographs from 1pm – 2pm. Stop in and say hi to a View Askew legend and one of the nicest guys in the biz we’ve ever met.
  • Kevin will be recieving an award at the Downbeach Film Festival in New Jersey on August 9, 2008. Stop on by beautiful Margate and show your support for New Jersey filmmakers, including our scooper, whose “Jerome Bixby’s The Man From Earth” and “iMurders” will be playing at the show. Details at the official website.
  • One of our astute scoopers caught Kevin and Walt at the NYC premiere for “The Dark Knight” earlier this week – So that’s twice for Kev now on the flick within a week or so — He must like it as much as the other reviewers we’ve been reading. Man, we can’t wait to check this one out.
  • In a recent press release, the Weinstein Co. announced picking up rights to a BUNCH of upcoming titles — Among them, “6 Billion Dollar Man”. We’re assuming this is the comedic retooling of “6 Million Dollar Man”, a script Kevin wrote WAY back when. Since we always like to keep tabs on projects to which Kevin was once attached, we’ll keep an eye on it for ya.

  • We’ve been talking a lot about that Best Buy Mooby Clerks II box set that’s showing up in a few select locations — We’ve just learned that Stash West/Laser Blazer has some in stock in the store! Pick them up while ya can, as this is a fantastic item to bring with you for Kevin to autograph at the big signing event later this month.
  • Kevin once again made insanely popular quiz show “Jeopardy!” late this week, as an $800 answer in a category called ‘Mere Smiths’:

This director of “Clerks” played Warlock in “Live Free or Die Hard”.

Returning champ Aaron got it right, answering of course, “Who is Kevin Smith?”.

  • Rotten Tomatoes list a familiar duo in their list of “The 10 Best Superhero Hookups” :

      10. Bluntman & Chronic

As seen in: Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (2001)

Like their “real-life” counterparts Jay (Jason Mewes) and Silent Bob (Kevin Smith), these superhero buddies live by their own version of the force: a shared love for Mary Jane. Wielding their bluntsabers side by side, Bluntman and his loyal sidekick Chronic spring from the pages of Banky and Holden’s comic in Kevin Smith’s Chasing Amy, then get the Hollywood treatment in their film-within-a-film in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. With A-list schmucks Jason Biggs and James Van Der Beek set to ruin the duo’s good name, Jay and Silent Bob arrive just in time to film a pivotal fight against the evil Cocknocker (Mark Hamill) with a cry of “Snootchie bootchies!” Just remember, they’re not gay; they’re (super) hetero life partners. Man love can be a beautiful thing.

  • Just a bit more info on that Spike panel in San Diego later this month — We mentioned the time change of 4:45 to 5:45 on Thursday the 24th, but not the bigger room. That’s gonna be Ballroom 20. As always, check with the Con when you arrive to be certain. Kevin will be a participant in Spike TV’s “Scream Like a Girl” panel.
  • Finally today, blogger James Hibbard expresses his jealousy over Kevin’s hosting the upcoming “Battlestar Galactica” panel at the San Diego Con, writing: “This could push the typically packed venue into fire marshal-shutdown level of geek engagement.”. You’re not kidding. Between an in-person stint with “Spaced” geniuses Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg, and Jessica Hynes, followed by a sit-down panel with stars and creators of the best show on televsion right now, we’re insanely jealous ourselves. It’s gonna be some July. If you’re on the west coast, or plan to be there soon, the end of a July sure is a good time to be there. More on Kevin’s stint for “Galactica” via Galactica Sitrep

  • Newsweek ran a print, yet edited, version of Kevin’s beautiful piece on George Carlin. Scannage right here. His official website, georgecarlin.com, also posted his final wishes which were made back in 1990. Rest in peace, George, and thanks for all the laughs and entertainment over the years.
  • Kevin’s high praise for the late Heath Leadger’s work in “The Dark Knight” is cited in this CNN article which suggests he may win an Oscar for the role. Kev’s bit:

“Heath Ledger didn’t so much give a performance as he disappeared completely into the role,” filmmaker and lifelong comics fan Kevin Smith said on his MySpace blog after seeing “The Dark Knight.” “I know I’m not the first to suggest this, but he’ll likely get at least an Oscar nod (if not the win) for best supporting actor.”

Can July 18th come any sooner? Our prediction – Movie of the summer. We can’t wait.

  • More chances to see Brian O’Halloran in “Brutal Massacre” this month — The Laemmle Sunset theater is playing the film on 7/11 and 7/12 in Los Angeles for midnight screenings. It’ll also play at the Texas Frightmare weekend, though we don’t have a time or exact location at this time.

“Six Million Dollar” And Other Script Tales…

July 1st @ 10:33 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Filling in one of those never-answered gaps, Kevin took a moment to answer a fan’s query about his “Six Million Dollar Man” script from ages ago. In his reply, Kevin details what happened to the project, and treats us to a bonus — a summary of a few other projects and the final word on what’s gone down (or MIGHT go down) in the future. Here’s Kevin:

      The story goes like this…

Jim Jacks (one of the producers on “Mallrats”) was friends with Richard Anderson – the man who not only portrayed Oscar Goldman on the show, but also controlled the rights to “Six Million Dollar Man”. One day over lunch (during post on “Mallrats”), they asked me if I’d be interested in writing a feature version of the show. I’d been a big fan as a kid (had a bunch of the dolls), so I said “Sure.” They whisked me up to Nina Jacobson’s office in the Black Tower, where I kinda pitched it (though there was nothing to pitch beyond “It’s an origin story…”), and boom – I was hired to write the script.

In the year it took me to turn in a script, Universal had undergone two regime changes: Nina left for Disney, and was replaced by another guy – who was then also replaced by a third guy, to whom I submitted my first draft.

That guy didn’t like the script. At all. His exact quote was “This reads like a comic book.” He meant it as a dis, but I felt rather complimented by the sentiment, and shortly thereafter, wrote my first issue of “Daredevil”.

I haven’t read that script in ten years, but I remember digging the dialogue and some of the ideas I brought to it (bionics were initially developed by the Nazis during their inhuman medical experimentations on concentration camp prisoners). The villain was the prototype Bionic Man – a guy who was more metal than flesh. I recall the climax being something like a robotic/cyborg attack on Washington. It was all pretty over-the-top, circa 1996. Now? It’d be no more dopey than “The Transformers” movie.

Last I heard, they were developing a comedic version of “The Six Million Dollar Man”.

“Six Million Dollar Man” – a writing gig only. Was never intended as the director.

“Green Hornet” – was contracted to write and direct, but wrote it then opted not to make it, as it was too expensive and I wasn’t ready to take on something that big just then.

“Fletch Won” – wrote it and intended to direct, but for nearly five years, Miramax wouldn’t let me cast Jason Lee in the lead as the young Irwin Fletcher. At that point, I lost my passion for it.

“Ranger Danger and the Danger Rangers” – still out there.

The only difference between me and other filmmakers is my candor. When asked questions (whether here on the board or in interviews), I talk about a lot of things I’d like to do (or would’ve liked to have done at one point). A side effect of maintaining an open discourse with the audience is that sometimes, you talk about movies that never manifest. Every filmmaker’s got ’em; but since many of them don’t engage with the audience as frequently and seriously as I do, you just never hear about their whimsies like you do with mine.

Cross off another one of those long-brewing mysteries, folks — Though there’s still a few more questions out there about other projects, past and future. For now, we’re crossing our fingers for production news on “Red State” and “Ranger Danger”, as well as that top-secret super special 10th film he’s got brewing.

  • An open source comic company known as “Tornado Comics Presents” recently finished a covers competition, focusing one of their entries on a character called “The Replacement Devil”. They’re such huge fans of Kevin, they tell us the based the character off his likeness. For further details on their projects, pop by their website.
  • Another one of those LOLcats showed up with a “Clerks” theme — We still don’t really get these things, but fans tell us they’re all the rage. You go, kitties.
  • 411 salutes some of the great TV and film roles of George Carlin at the end of their recent column, citing both “Jersey Girl” and “Dogma”, and “Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back”. We especially like this well-worded praise for the oft-misunderstood “Jersey Girl”:

“I’ve always been a sucker for “daddy stories” and I think Affleck delivered a solid performance of a single dad trying his best to raise his daughter. It is Kevin Smith’s most sincere movie to date. George Carlin played Affleck’s dad and did a great job in the performance, weighing sincerity with exasperation at the actions of his son throughout the movie. He was great in the film, as should be expected. “

  • The Hollywood United Methodist Church will include “Dogma” as part of their “Finding Faith in Film” series this summer, on August 24th. No further details on the website, though we assume the films actually screen at the church’s location in Hollywood, CA.
  • Attention Australia! Seth Rogen will be doing an interview in your area with Rove this Sunday, July 6th. Rove is an Aussie chat show (Letterman-esque) which airs Sundays at 9 PM local time. Shows reach YouTube by the next day, so we’re hoping to have links to the video soon after it airs (we’re crossing our fingers for a “Zack & Miri” mention or two).
  • Brian O’Halloran’s new horror comedy “Brutal Massacre: A Comedy” screens at The Pioneer Theater in New York City throughout the month of July. The director, along with some of the cast and crew, will be in attendance for the first showing this Saturday, July 5th. We’ll have details on screenings in Texas and Los Angeles soon as well.
  • Last, but certainly not least, in case you need another reminder – SModcast #55 hit the net this week, with more of the best humor on the web in MP3 format. For your free, fast exclusive download, hit up Quick Stop Entertainment

  • Via recent board posts, Kevin cites that there has been no movement forward, at present, on the special edition DVDs of Jersey Girl or Chasing Amy X. Of course, we’ll let you know if that changes. Projects rarely get left behind forever these days, so you can bet we’ll eventually get to see both, somehow. Patience.
  • The Mid-Ohio Con reports that Jason Mewes will be a guest this year. The show runs on October 4th and 5th in Columbus, Ohio. We’ll assume Mewes will be there for his usual autograph signing and meet and greet. If you’re in the area, this is a fantastic chance to meet a View Askew legend.
  • Our shot of Mr. O’Halloran comes to us courtesy of the great photographer Albert Ortega, who always seems to be everywhere the stars are. Brian was at Fangoria’s Weekend of Horrors in Los Angeles promoting his new horror comedy “Brutal Massacre”. You can catch Bri on the big screen in a very brief cameo in “The Happening”. Our scooper reports it’s a quick one: “You see his eyes is the mirror of a car, and a kind of quick shot of the lower half of his face. But he’s there!”
  • We’re not watching NBC’s “Celebrity Family Feud”, but from the ads, it looks like there’s at least one episode that’s a must-see: A commercial lists one of the upcoming teams as ‘Team Earl’, which consists Jason Lee and his “My Name is Earl” co-stars, all in character: Earl, Randy, Joy, Darnell, and Catalina. According to the website, they’ll take on Camden County. If the episodes roll out as listed, this puts this one as airing on July 8th, but we’ll post when we know for sure. What a fantastic way to get an “Earl” fix in the middle of summer! Bravo, NBC.

  • Kevin’s got big plans for the San Diego Comic-Con next month. No exact details yet, but here’s a quote on his plans for this year:

Busy year for me at the Con this time; I’m doing four different panels, including my usual gig (Friday night, 6:30 to 8:00pm).

No details on the Con’s official site just yet, but we will have the full schedule right here as soon as it’s revealed. We can only assume one of the other panels may be as moderator (perhaps a Heroes or Galactica panel?), and perhaps a few other surprises. The San Diego Comic Con runs July 24-27 and is arguably the best Con in the world. A MAJOR media event for not just comics, but now the latest in film and television as well.

  • Watch the great George Carlin spend a couple minutes chatting about Dogma on “Inside the Actors Studio” via Hulu, our new favorite online TV media portal. And of course, don’t miss NBC’s re-airing of the first-ever episode of “Saturday Night Live” tonight, where Carlin hosts the original “Not Ready For Prime Time” players.
  • Clerks star Marilyn Ghigliotti stars as “Nurse Clark” in the new horror flick “Dead And Gone”, which hits DVD this Tuesday, July 1st, from Lions Gate. Pre-order your copy from Amazon today! Some good reviews over at Amazon as well.
