  • Cinematical now runs a small story on the “Zack & Miri” photos we referenced the other day. Nothing new here, just a blurb.
  • The Bergen Performing Arts Center has fully updated all info at their website now, regarding Kevin’s big Q&A appearance on May 2nd. The event is set to be their biggest of the year, and will almost certainly sell out, so get those seats now, before they’re gone. Prices range depending on where you wanna sit, making it even more important to book NOW and get the spot you want. As this is a Friday night show, expect a fun room (and maybe even some clippage from a certain new movie that should be edited together by then..)
  • Anyone have any hulu.com invites, by the way? The new FOX/NBC venture is featuring a huge database of their current TV shows in legal online fashion. We hear it’s cool and wanna give it a try.
  • And last, but most certainly not least, let’s not forget to cheer on Scott Mosier tonight, who was a co-producer on the Oscar-nominated short documentary “Salim Baba”. We think the flick has a real shot, and it sure would be a thrill to see Mr. Mosier taking a statue home. Jon Stewart hosts tonight at 8 PM ET, 5 PM PT, on ABC — It’s the 80th annual celebration of the event.

  • HEADS-UP: Kevin’s Bergan County Q&A date is going to be changing. We don’t have a new date to announce at this point, but we DO want to let you know it’s coming soon, this week. The appearance is not being cancelled, just moved.
  • It’s a small mention, so we’re not running a scan, but writer Diablo Cody (“Juno”) makes reference to a hilarious Affleck line from the great “Mallrats” in her back page column for the mid-month issue of “Entertainment Weekly”, while discussing a rumored “New Kids on the Block” reunion:

“In the movie Mallrats, Ben Affleck famously (rhetorically?) asks, ‘Who’s your favorite New Kid?’ while atop a schoolgirl. This surprisingly profound question begs the inevitable Beatles analogy.”

  • More love from the folks at Film-411 today: Jay & Silent Bob show up as #32 in their list of all-time greatest movie characters, along with a detailed write-up and a clip.
  • As promised, here’s a German-to-English translation of that Jersey Girl scan from the last edition of NewsBites, for the curious:

      NEW: Jersey Girl
Arrogant Yuppie finds his way back into the simple, real life.
Charming, tragic comedy with Ben Affleck

Critics bashed this Kevin Smith movie really hard, although it is a pleasant watch until the happy end.

PICK OF THE DAY: Charmingly sympathetic

      The Ben Affleck Info-Box says:

      Arrogant and rude

A Producer denied Affleck the leading role in Smiths Mallrats. The director gave his friend a supporting role, and after Ben’s Oscar win for “Good Will Hunting”, even leading roles. (Chasing Amy, Dogma) In 2007, Affleck made a critically acclaimed directorial debut with “Gone Baby Gone”. Right now he is filming with Russell Crowe the Remake of the BBC Movie “State of Play”.

  • Seems that Netflix is recommending the recent film “F*ck” to folks who love Kevin Smith movies, according to this scan from their site. Check it out.
  • And finally today, we can’t go by this update without mentioning our sadness on the passing of actor Roy Scheider, best known for his work in “Jaws”, a favorite film of Kevin’s where his character’s name (Chief Brody) was inspiration for our favorite dude in “Mallrats”. Our condolences to all his friends and family.

  • A Hollywood Reporter article on the proposed new cartoon from Mike Judge (“Beavis and Butthead”, “King of the Hill”) wisely notices it’s the first foray for ABC into the animation realm since the “Clerks” cartoon way back in 2000.
  • Wanna see the View Askew production “Small Town, Gay Bar” at home for free? You may be in luck. For those who have the Logo channel on their cable system, the film is available as part of the OnDemand program until February 17th. Most major cable systems now carry this (we can confirm it’s a part of the Comcast package). Enjoy.
  • “Jersey Girl” will soon premiere on German free-tv, and a local magazine there has listed it as “Movie of the Day”. Best we can do now is a photo of the ad, a translation is on the way for the curious.

  • A nice little “Zack & Miri” tidbit today. When we briefly spoke with Jim Norton during a Harrisburg appearance earlier this month, he spoke quite highly of Kevin but seemed unsure of his role in the new film. However, on Opie & Anthony this week, it was reported he was out of studio due to his role in the movie. So, it looks like we’ll see the hilarious comedian onscreen for sure now! Hoorah!
  • Filmstew reports that Celeste Massullo, an artist from Ohio, put together a charity fund raiser of “toilet tattoos” (Custom artwork drawn on toilet bowl lids). One of the celebrity participants is no other than Jason Mewes, though his art is not displayed as part of the piece.
  • What’s Jason Lee up to while “Earl” is on break due to the strike? Why, appearing as Kevin Bacon on web based TV shows, of course. Channel 101 runs an episode of the program “Yacht Rock” with one of our favorite View Askew stars. You can catch it over at YouTube as well. Funny stuff, as they present the story of the movie “Footloose”. If you’re a fan of cheesy 80’s tunes, you’re gonna laugh out loud.
  • Oh but what’s one Lee newsbite without a second? We love obscure stuff like this — Teacher scooper Tom hooks us up with some scannage from a teaching magazine called “Edutopia”. This month, they have an interview with Mr. Lee, which mentions Kevin and Mallrats. Click and read. Simple as that. You’ll learn, among other things, what’s in his “Dream lunchbox”.
  • Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, and Sean Bailey have announced that their LivePlanet film unit will be disbanding. The banner will remain, but without Damon and Affleck’s involvement, as they have taken new steps in their careers. Their most visible project was the awesome “Project Greenlight” HBO/Bravo series.

  • Jason Lee and cast of “Earl” to be on American Chopper this Thursday night (1/31) at 9 PM on TLC:

“Mikey gets in the game and heads up OCC’s latest creation — a Wolverine bike for the University of Michigan’s Mott Children’s Hospital. The cast from NBC’s “My Name is Earl” bursts onto the scene and gets the OCC team to build a My Name is Earl bike.”

  • The Stanford Daily has an op-ed piece about the modernization of religion. You guessed it, “Dogma” shows up inside:

My fellow New Jerseyan Kevin Smith appears to see the comic surrealism as well. In Smith’s facetious 1999 film “Dogma,” a misguided effort to modernize the Catholic Church’s image unfolds through a campaign entitled, “Catholicism Wow!” Complete with a revamped, “less depressing” and utterly absurd Jesus figure bearing the name “Buddy Christ,” the attempt at Catholic modernization is portrayed by Smith as both silly and hopeless.

  • Kevin’s recent blog comments about tightening up the Oscars and other award ceremonies get a mention in this PopMatters article regarding the writers’ strike and the award season.
  • A recent review of “This Film is Not Yet Rated” on DVD reveals that Kevin appears in the deleted scenes area of the disc. So, whether you’ve seen this fascinating film about the MPAA process or not, now’s a great time to pick up a copy on DVD. Kevin’s of course in the feature as well, considering the fact that the organization slapped his first ever flick with an NC-17 (initially) just for dialogue. Yeah, you remember!
  • Finally today, a bit more UK Press for the newly airing “Reaper” across the pond. In this small article, Kevin expresses his shock in being asked to direct the pilot:

“It’s very strange because I normally don’t direct television,” Kevin tells Cw.com. “Nobody ever asked me to do it before. I’ve had offers to come in on sitcoms which have already been up and running. But this was interesting because my agent called and said there’s a pilot of this show and they want you to direct it. I was like, why would anyone, based on my body of work, want me to direct a TV pilot?

“Generally my stuff seems to be very chatty, frank and obscene. I was so puzzled, I said I would like to read it and see who’s stupid enough to want to hire me. I read the script and I just dug it so much.”

Kevin was attracted to the Reaper pilot script as it reminded him of hit Simon Pegg film Shaun Of The Dead.

“I’m a big Shaun Of The Dead fan,” he says. “The sensibilities of the characters in Reaper are similar to my characters. The only difference between the characters I write and the characters in Reaper is none of these characters use four letter words because we’re on TV.”

“Reaper” returns Stateside to the CW with a new episode on March 4th.

Mosier’s Up For An Oscar!

January 27th @ 10:39 pm | 1 Comment » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Shame on us for missing this one — Our beloved producer Scott Mosier is actually up for an honest-to-goodness Academy Award this year. Yep, Mos produced the 14 minute documentary short “Salim Baba”, which is up in the “Best Documentary Short Subject” category. The New York Times’ website has a synopsis and some other links, for the curious. Let’s hope for a strike settlement so we can see the Oscars on TV as they were intended, and let’s cross all appendages and hope for a Scott Mosier win! Congratulations to Scott on this great honor, and good luck.

“Small Town, Gay Bar” Nominated For GLAAD Award!

January 26th @ 1:29 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • This just in from this week’s prestigious Sundance Film Festival – The View Askew production “Small Town, Gay Bar”, directed by Malcolm Ingram, has received a GLAAD nomination in the “Best Documentary” category. The GLAAD Media Awards ceremonies will be held in New York on March 17, 2008 at the Marriott Marquis; in South Florida at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino on April 12; in Los Angeles on April 26 at the Kodak Theatre; and in San Francisco on May 10 at the San Francisco Marriott. GLAAD will provide details about upcoming broadcast dates in the near future. Big ups to Malcolm for this great honor, and good luck to he and the film this Spring!

  • Bostonist reports on the Chlotrudis Society for Independent Film’s Top 100 list for this year – Their one hundred funniest films of all time. “Clerks II” and “Chasing Amy” take spots 77 and 79, repsectively.
  • Some congrats to Askew and ancillary Askew types for the Oscars this year. No major nominations, however, here’s a few you might be interested in:

BEST ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE – Casey Affleck for “The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford” (brother of Ben Affleck, appeared in “Good Will Hunting”)
BEST ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE – Amy Ryan for “Gone Baby Gone” (directed by Ben Affleck, of course)
3 Nominations for Matt Damon’s “Bourne Ultimatum”, for score, editing, and mixing.

  • Though “Red State” is far from our minds with the current flick filming, the controversial Phelps family is keeping the press alive – Ever since hearing rumors of the film’s theme, they’ve been characteristically outspoken on the project. Cinematical picks up this latest quote from Shirley Phelps regarding the project (which, mind you, no one has yet seen the script for aside from a few friends and insiders at View Askew).
  • The unforgettable Golgothan is one of the subjects of this fun little piece on Sewer Monsters in film. The creature joins the wonderful CHUD among others:

Dogma: In Kevin Smith’s religious comedy, the Golgothan is the excrement monster that Jason Lee sends after Jay and Silent Bob. He’s made up of all the evil shit from all over the world, and even has his own action figure that farts when you squeeze it. Unlike the Charmin.

  • “Reaper” is just now hitting the UK via their network channel E4, and getting some well-deserved good press. We like what Times Online had to say the best:

      Reaper, E4, 9pm

Imagine a Simon Pegg/Nick Frost-style couple of buddies dropped into a comedy episode of Heroes, and you have Reaper. Tonight’s pilot, in which our champion Sam (Bret Harrison) finds out that his parents sold his soul to the Devil (Ray Wise), also benefits from the direction of the Clerks legend Kevin Smith – it’s great fun, but it’ll be interesting to see how it develops next week without Smith at the helm.

TV Scoop also gives the show a nice little review.

  • Looks like the Damon-Affleck produced adaptation of “A People’s History of the United States” is finally getting underway, in miniseries form. NPR reports.
  • Kevin gets a nod for his “Southland Tales” cameo in this positive capsule review of the film from Cleveland.com.
  • And finally today, we love SignOnSanDiego’s take on “Zack and Miri Make a Porno” when listing their upcoming flicks to watch for this year:

“Zack and Miri Make a Porno” (Fall): Written and directed by Kevin Smith. That’s enough for us.

We couldn’t have typed it better ourselves. Be sure to visit our production page for a complete list of the latest multimedia and press from the film. We’ve just added a few today. See ya next time!

  • Since we started this site in 1997, we have a pretty decent archive of every article that’s been published about View Askew and cast since then — However, every once in a while, a gem is uncovered online that we like to add into the mix – Take, for example, this Ben Affleck article from April 11, 1997 via MIT. It was written when he was out promoting “Chasing Amy”. Check it out, along with a photo of the 1997 Ben, and the rumblings of the film that would win him an Oscar – “Good Will Hunting”. Just another worthy addition to the News Askew archives.
  • And finally today — We have an open standing order here at the site for folks who are lucky enough to win those coveted “Auctions Askew” items to drop us some photos and let us know about their newly won pieces of movie history. Today, Adam Bertocci proudly sends us photos of him in Ben Affleck’s screen-worn “Dogma” duds.

Adam notes: “No, I’m not wearing his pants. That would just be weird. Shirts and coats, on the other hand, are perfectly normal. I own some movie props and memorabilia, but nothing quite as cool as this. Big thanks to Kevin for letting his fans own a piece of his great movies. And your readers should just be happy I got outbid on Rosario Dawson’s camisole.”

Enjoy, Adam, and thanks for giving the stuff a good home.

“Bear’s Life” Scans: Smith & Ingram Interviewed…

January 10th @ 9:34 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Marty Cornwallace

  • You saw some mentions from Kevin and us when he shot the cover for alternative lifestyle mag “A Bear’s Life” — But have you seen the interview? We’ve got scans of the whole thing, which delves into the meeting of the two
directors circa-“Mallrats” thru the successful documentary “Small Town, Gay Bar”. It’s an extensive six-page interview about filmmaking, Kevin and Malc’s friendship, and yes, Kevin’s notoriety in the world of “Bears”. Click
    ’em. Read ’em. Enjoy.
