- While we visited the Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back Bluntcave set and had a blast, we couldn’t help but wishing we’d got to hang out for the days shooting the jewel heist by Chrissy, Sissy, Missy, and Justice. Entertainment Weekly seems to share our thoughts this week, including the lovely ladies in a new photo gallery titled Kiss Me Deadly: 25 Best Big-Screen Bad Girls:
CHRISSY, SISSY, MISSY, AND JUSTICE
Ali Larter, Eliza Dushku, Jennifer Schwalbach, Shannon Elizabeth
Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (2001)
Hot jewel thieves pretending to be animal rights activists? Who may or may not be lesbians? Yes, please. - TBS Superstation reports that “Jersey Girl” will soon come to their network. This will be the basic cable premiere of the flick, in what we assume will be a new, edited for TV format. No showtimes or dates yet, but we’ll let ya know when we hear more.
- Clerks II rightfully hits Cinematical’s list of “Deliberately Offensive (But Fun) Comedies”, with the following write-up:
3. Clerks 2
How could I not include a film that caused a well-known critic to storm out in mid-screening because of possible interspecies erotica? A film that includes a character trying to “take back” a certain racial slur? During a plane ride last week, I decided to forego the in-flight movie selection (Juno) in favor of this movie … for some inexplicable reason the Kevin Smith DVD was in my laptop bag. When the flight attendant interrupted me and I paused the movie, it froze on a screenshot of Randal with that slur visible on the back of his Mooby’s shirt. I realized that the image would be terrific to post as the photo at the top of this list, but unfortunately it proves my point a little too well. - And finally today, perhaps another comic creator sneaking a “Clerks” reference in there — In the latest issue of “She-Hulk” (#28), She Hulk asks her Skrull friend Jaz how many partners she’s been with, her response, 5 simultaneously, but 37 in all. Huh. Have a weekend, folks.

“Money Shots”: Cumming May 15th!
- Comic Book Resources were there in person for the Quick Stop Entertainment panel in NYC last weekend, and have posted an extremely detailed report from the event. Among the items presented there, as we briefly mentioned over the weekend, were the “Money Shot” shorts which will give us some of the first behind-the-scenes footage from “Zack & Miri Make a Porno”. We can now confirm that these shorts will debut EXCLUSIVELY at Quick Stop Entertainment on Thursday, May 15th, 2008. Wanna sample? Read on:
The second video presentation was on “Zack & Miri Make A Porno,” and kicked off with Kevin Smith explaining that along the lines of “Clerks 2,” he will again be presenting a series of “webisodes” featuring a behind-the-scenes look at his last film, featuring the cast and called “Money Shots.”
A quick example was next shown, featuring Seth Rogen along with fellow cast members Craig Robinson and Jason Mewes as they talked about the fake semen used in the film. Ricky Mabe then enters the scene and begins to spread the substance across his face, much to the horror and/or delight of the others.
It was announced that the first installment of “Money Shots” will premiere on Quick Stop Entertainment on May 15.
We’ll of course drop you a reminder for the appearance of these highly anticipated shorts from Chop Shop Entertainment and View Askew. We can’t wait.
Devils Lose, Yet Kevin’s NHL Blog Lives!
- We hope you’ve been keeping up with Kevin’s blogs during the NHL playoffs this year, exclusively over at NHL.com. While his beloved Devils were taken down by the Rangers, Kev took it in stride with the latest entry, giving his “concession speech” if you will, though we hope it’s not the last writing we see at the site. Here’s some snips:
What can I say? The better team won.
But it was close in those last two games. Indeed, in Game Five, the Devils came back from a 4-1 deficit to almost tie it up in the third. But when all’s said and done, there can only be one winner, and this year (well, this round, really), it’s the Rangers. Congrats to the Blueshirts; you’ve got a helluva goalie and some great young guns.
Devils’ Legionnaires, I implore you to take those guns out of your mouths and let these positives from the 07-08 season warm your heart ‘til the fall.
…
We won’t be holding a Cup aloft this year, but that’s okay; let someone else have a turn. Four Cups in thirteen years might’ve been a little too greedy.
In the interest of saving Rangers’ fans some time so they can psychologically prepare for either the Pens or the Flyers, I will provide the standard negative response to any reminder of the Devils’ Cups collection.
While we can’t be certain if Kevin will continue on with his team out, might we suggest taking on the surging Philadelphia Flyers, who just pulled a HUGE overtime win in Washington DC last night to move onto the next round? GO FLYERS!

- DirecTV’s channel 238, called “Reelzchannel”, will air a special titled “The Films of Kevin Smith” on Monday, April 28th at 2:00 PM EST. Since we haven’t heard of any new interviews being conducted for this special, we’re going to assume it’s a rundown of his filmography, maybe with some stockinterview footage tossed in. If we learn more particulars before it airs, we’ll let ya know.
- The IMDB ran a good “Clerks” trivia question this week:
The cost of obtaining soundtrack rights outweighed the entire production costs for this 1994 film.
Pretty cool, no? We’re wondering if there will ever be another successful flick made as cheaply. While “Red State” will certainly easily exceed the “Clerks” and “Chasing Amy” indie budgets, we’re curious to see what happens with that project, especially if Kev and Scott decide to independently fund it. - A final bit of trivia/interesting news for the day – One of our readers tells us today that Guardian Angels Regional School in Paulsboro, NJ will hold a talent show tomorrow night where her daughter will participate. Why is this news? Well, ya see, this is the very same stage/auditorium that hosted the famous talent show from the end of “Jersey Girl” (including the great “Sweeney Todd” number). We’re told that “Kevin Smith Way”, the street dedicated to the man during filming there, is still taking on traffic. See ya next time!
Monday Brings Us Another New SModcast!

Thanks as always to the guys for taking time out of their schedules to give us some laughs on these dreary, back to work Mondays. Only a few weeks until the show turns 50! - The dudes from Quick Stop Entertainment held a live panel discussion at the NY Comicon over the weekend, and our pal Robb was in attendance. Here’s a short report on what went down that may be of interest:
The panel started with a folksong version of “Baby Got Back”.
Announced the “Masters of SONG FU” music contest. Head to head contest. First challenge: 30-60 second sitcom theme song of your life. Entries open May 1 and close May 15th.

Showed the intro to the “Zack & Miri Make A Porno” webisodes titled ‘Money Shots’. No date other than “some point in the future” given for their web premiere. - More View Askew love from Empire Magazine in their June 2008 issue. In a feature on the Greatest Movie Studios, Miramax is in the spotlight this month, with Kevin featured throughout the article as well as Askewniverse regulars Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. “Clerks” is also charts at No. 7 in their Studio Top 10. Complete scan evidence is above.
- Finally today, anyone catch “Navy Seals” on AMC this weekend? American Movie CLASSICS!?!? Gotta love it. See ya next time…
An Evening with Kevin Smith @ Count Basie Theatere, Red Bank, NJ
- We’ve been to a lot of Kevin Smith appearances, but two that stick out for us were both at the historic Count Basie Theater in Red Bank, New Jersey. At the first show we attended, Kevin set a record with his longest onstage appearance EVER. The second time around, cameras filmed a soon to be released DVD on Kevin’s 37th birthday, featuring all new tales, never told before.
So, when we heard that the Basie was being closed for renovations from July to October, we were first bummed, but then excited. While this would mean Kevin wouldn’t have a chance to hit this great spot over the summer, we were hopeful to see what would come after the place re-opened.
So, here’s the good news – Kevin will be appearing at the Count Basie LIVE, one night only — Friday, November 7th, at 7:00 PM. This being a Friday night, it’s going to be a BIG show, considering it kicks off the weekend. Also, it’s likely to sell out fast. For this one, it’s not a question of IF it will sell out, but WHEN, and how quickly.
TICKETS ARE NOW ON SALE! BUY THEM NOW BEFORE THEY SELL OUT!
Prices range from $25 for the balcony all the way up to $75 for those nifty front of theater seats.
The show is scheduled for just one week after the current planned release date for “Zack And Miri Make a Porno”, so it’s likely that Kevin will have a lot to say about the film — And will hopefully be celebrating from a big week of box office grosses!
We’re not going to miss this one and neither should you. Buy your tickets TODAY and be among the first to see the beatifully restored interior of the Count Basie Theater in Red Bank. You don’t wanna miss a Smith in Red Bank show! See ya there. And please, buy today. You don’t want these tix to go extinct on ya.
No West Coast “Boardie” Zack & Miri Screening…
- Those of you who were eagerly waiting for a shot at an invite to see “Zack And Miri Make a Porno” in a special screening will have to wait a little longer. For “Clerks II”, Kevin needed to find some more material to cut to get down to a reasonable running time, so several lucky folks in LA and NYC got to see the film months early and offer up their opinions. This time ’round, Kevin managed to get the film down to a lean enough running time that it’s ready to head into the formal testing process, which happens somewhere in the heart of the nation. Somewhere, random folks in the middle of the US are among the first to see Kevin’s new comedy next month, and they don’t even know it yet. Here’s Kevin:
So since we’re down to 1:45, I’m not really hunting for cuts anymore. That means the proposed board screening akin to the pair we had for “Clerks II” won’t be happening.Instead, we’re heading straight into the actual test screening process. Mid-May, we’ll be taking “Zack and Miri” to a midwest movie-plex and test driving her for the masses.
I feel pretty good about our chances. Everyone who’s seen it thus far (roughly 50 to 60 people now) have been way into it. Now’s as good a time as any to start the next leg of the journey: locking picture. If the test screening goes well, and if our MPAA screening at month’s end doesn’t throw us back into the editing room, we’ll use June and July to tie everything up – which would mean we’d be done and ready for a possible trip to the Toronto Film Festival before our 10/31 theatrical release.
I’ve got the internet teasers cut and ready to go (look for 4/28 bow for the first one, end of May for the second) and I just finished a cut of the theatrical trailer as well.
I think all of you are gonna dig the flick.
We remain impressed at the different approach Kevin is taking with film marketing as far as the web goes. Spoilers and plot details on the movie have been kept to a bare minimum, and we STILL have yet to see any live footage from the finished product. That will all change at the end of this month, of course, when the first internet trailer arrives online, though we’re betting that Kevin will still keep his comments to a minimum. If you’re looking for plot, you’ll want to join us all in cinemas this October. Here’s crossing our fingers for the most successful View Askew Production ever this fall.

- Catch Brian O’Hallorn and the entire cast of his upcoming horror comedy “Brutal Massacre”, next week at “Fangoria’s Weekend of Horrors”, at the Los Angeles Convention Center. The discussion panel will take place on Saturday, April 26th at 2:15pm PT, with all the headliners, including our pal Brian along with other genre greats such as David Naughton, Ken Foree, and Gunnar Hansen. Of particular interest, Gerry Bednob, who Kevin has confirmed has a small three-scene role in “Zack And Miri Make a Porno”, will also be on the panel.
- Speaking of Dante, the character gets a brief shout-out in the blurb for an upcoming Fantastic Four comic title at IGN.
- And finally today, mark your calendars if you’re near Minneapolis. The classic “Mallrats” will screen at The Uptown Theater as part of their midnight movie series on May 17th. You saw how much fun the last screening of the film was in a recent update, so be sure and check out the film with a great crowd if you’re in the area. “Mallrats” remains one of the best View Askew films to watch with a midnight crowd. In fact, when there’s another Vulgarthon, we’re secretly hoping it might get dusted off for one of the slots. See ya next time!
