Will The Animated Jay & Bob Live On?
- MTV Movies runs a story with an interesting quote from Kevin today — Seems that ownership issues may tie up that “Clerks: Sell Out” animated film we had been looking forward to seeing. However, since Kevin does own Jay & Silent Bob as characters, there’s a potential that the duo could someday headline their own animated project. Here’s the text:
Kevin Smith Hopes To Make Jay And Silent Bob Animated Film
Randall and Dante, the sad sack titular clerks at the heart of Kevin Smith’s breakthrough first film, may have sold their last pack of Nails cigarettes – for a little while anyway – with the long-rumored straight-to-DVD animated film “Clerks: Sell Out” deader than poor Julie Dwyer, regretted Smith.“The Clerks cartoon movie we’re talking about doing is kinda held up by the fact that Disney owned the ‘Clerks’ cartoon,” Smith said of the series, which aired for only two episodes on ABC way back in 2000. “And I don’t think they get along with the Weinstein team very much anymore. So we would have to do it without them, and that’s really not an option. So I kinda don’t foresee that happening.”
But with one potential animated film down, Smith may turn his attention to another, he revealed. After all, Randall and Dante aren’t the only reason to visit a Quik Stop.
“I own the characters Jay and Silent Bob so, conceivably, we could do it straight-to-DVD animated Bluntman and Chronic or something like that,” he enthused. “I would write it, turn it over to guys that do animation. I wouldn’t be against that at all.”
To us, this sounds like one of those little thoughts that just came out and might be taken TOO seriously by those who read it — Still, it’s nice to hear an update on the animated View Askew world, and to know that Kevin hasn’t completely put such a project off the radar completely. We just think it’ll be a while with things focusing on the live-action realm in 2008, first.

BlogCritics: “Seth Rogen Brings Real Heat to Kevin Smith Flick”
- The widely read and popular “BlogCritics” Magazine website features an article from a writer who agrees with what we’ve been citing – The excitement of Seth Rogen joining the View Askew ranks has us smelling some big box office, almost certainly the biggest film in View Askew history. Not to mention, this non-Askewniverse film should be an excellent gateway film for new fans to Kevin’s body of work:

Seth Rogen Brings Real Heat to Kevin Smith Flick
Written by Craig Lyndall
Kevin Smith has written a new movie and it is set to start filming sometime in January in Pittsburgh, where he previously filmed Dogma. I am a die-hard Kevin Smith fan as are many people, and my expectations for Zack and Miri Make A Porno are through the roof.
Smith has signed on Seth Rogen to play Zack and Elizabeth Banks to play Miri. Smith couldn’t ask for a better situation than this one. Rogen is absolutely on the top of his game right now and he will bring a level of heat and marketability (not to mention the potentially hilarious performance) to this Smith vehicle unlike anything that Smith has ever seen for any of his movies in his entire career.
Of course, Smith had Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez on board for Jersey Girl. There were no two bigger celebrities in the world when they made that movie. But if you remember correctly, Jersey Girl had the unfortunate timing of having to follow one of the most trod upon movies in the history of cinema, Gigli, starring the two biggest pieces of his huge cast. As a result, the general movie-going public didn’t even bother to give Jersey Girl much of a chance. This was especially ridiculous considering the movie was really about Affleck’s character interacting with his father, played by George Carlin, his soon-to-be girlfriend, played by the impossibly cute Liv Tyler, and his daughter, played by Raquel Castro.
But now, there is no doubt about it. Short of Seth Rogen entering a media circus-type situation where he dates Lindsay Lohan, does a bunch of coke, and goes to jail, he will undoubtedly bring some serious, legitimate Hollywood heat to Kevin Smith’s new comedy. Let’s look at Rogen’s last few movies.
Although The 40 Year-Old Virgin was a Steve Carell project, Seth Rogen’s performance didn’t hurt that movie at all. It’s worldwide gross was over $177 million according to Box Office Mojo. After that, Seth Rogen produced and starred in Knocked Up which grossed $217 million worldwide. Finally, he wrote and played in Superbad this summer which has grossed over $167 million worldwide, and that doesn’t include DVD numbers as the release date is set for December 4.
That box office track record would have any director creaming their collective shorts. But the news is even rosier for Kevin Smith and his Weinstein Company backers. When Smith makes a movie, the budget doesn’t look big compared to the catering bill of a Michael Bay production. Smith is reportedly going to make Zack and Miri on a budget of $25 million. If Rogen and Elizabeth Banks are anywhere close to decent in this movie, they will easily be able to make everyone involved supremely rich. Or even more supremely rich in the case of most Hollywood types.
Regardless, Kevin Smith got his man and he potentially has a gateway into a post-Silent Bob movie directing career.

- Kevin and Scott cut a new promo that’s airing in regular rotation on Opie & Anthony’s XM 202 (the “Virus” channel) about SModcast airing every Saturday night at 8PM as part of the Saturday Night Virus block of programming. If anyone’s got an audio capture for us, send it on. We’d like to share it, then archive it.
- The voice of Jason Mewes returns in another episode of Superdeluxe’s “The Whiskers and Mr. Fancy” series titled “Mr. Stone”. The web-crafted serial features live-action cats blended with static backdrops. Mewes plays “Whiskers”.
- Turns out that those two tees we recently mentioned had already quietly arrived over at the online Stash! Pick up the Clerks II Jay and Bob and Goodbye Horses “tuck” shirts now, and have yourself some nifty holiday gifts, for you or your pals.
- A fairly amusing Photoshop job of Jay and Bob as Jedis appears at this contest over at the Worth1000 website. We believe you need to register with the website to view other entries, so we’ve just put the fan-crafted photo here.

- Today’s edition of News Askew comes to you LIVE from downtown Pittsburgh, PA! Coincidentally, one of us had to head out here for the day job, NOT related to Zack & Miri — Still, it’s cool to be in the city soon to be home to the latest View Askew opus…
- Diamond Previews reveals what looks to be 2 new Clerks II tee designs , one titled “Disco Dancing” and the sure to be controversial “Goodbye Horses”. We’ll let you know as soon as stock arrives at the Stash, of course.
- Kevin was mentioned by ESPN’s Bill Simmons today via their website, citing that he’d love to do a podcast with him. Here’s how the transcript looks:
Matthew (Columbus,OH): Hey Bill are you a fan of Kevin Smith? He just announced his new movie will star Seth Rogen (quickly becoming a huge comedy star) and Elizabeth Banks (a very underrated and good looking actress). The best part is the title “Zach and Miri Make a Porno.” Can this movie go wrong?Bill Simmons: (3:36 PM ET ) On paper, I like everything in that paragraph. I do like Kevin Smith – his movies always have just enough going on in them that you never feel like you wasted 90 minutes of your life. He’s on my short list of “Podcast Guests I want To Get,” along with Larry David and Hank Steinbrenner.
- If you haven’t checked out the new Futurama DVD release, “Bender’s Big Score”, it’s well worth the watch, especially for fans. This is a true feature, and not just strung together episodes. Why the mention, you might ask? Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back’s Mark Hamill lends a voice during the film’s Christmas battle sequence. An instant, epic classic. We’re already looking forward to the next disc.
- An interesting “Die Hard” tidbit – The extras on the newly released disc actually reveal that the appearance of Kevin’s name in the opening credits, where letters fade in gradually to form star names, intentionally appears as “S ITH” for a brief moment as a tribute to his love for the 3rd installment in the new trilogy.
- Mallrats is briefly named dropped in the “Letters” area of the latest issue of Wizard when discussing sex and The Fantastic Four. Kevin’s mention of The Thing in ‘Rats is used as an example in the editor’s reply.
- What’s Kevin’s famous Tonight Show “The Flying Car” sound like when done by different actors…and in another dialect? Check out this YouTube video of “The Nasol Show – Episode 3” for the answer.
- And finally today, anyone notice the similarity to the beloved Buddy Christ in the DVD cover pose of “The Best Of The Colbert Report”? We’re just sayin’…See ya next time.

- MONDAY NOTE: We realize a Monday without SModcast is a sad one — Alas, this week, due to production setup for “Zack and Miri”, there will be no new episode. Kevin was still out in Los Angeles, while Scott and the recording gear were in Pittsburgh. Expect some delays here and there as pre-production on “Zack and Miri Make A Porno” is going to take a lot of time and effort, but we’re sure the guys will check in with new episodes as often as they possibly can.
- This month’s issue of “Wizard” magazine has a feature article titled “Hollywood Hotlist” (“From J.J. Abrams to Zack Snyder, take a look at the 25 hottest filmmakers that all of tinseltown is chasing”). Kevin comes in at number 17. Our newest member of the View Askew family, Seth Rogen, takes the number 9 slot. Scans are here, as always. Click and enjoy, and congrats to both Kevin and Seth on their Hollywood elite status.
- Congrats to Dogma’s “God”, Alanis Morissette, who will be inducted into the Canadian Music Industry Hall of Fame and be presented with a lifetime achievement award this March.
- Check out the podcast titled “Panel Borders”, which recently aired on the UK’s Resonance 104.4 FM. The episode features a new interview with Jim Mahfood and his comics career so far, including his work on the Clerks comic and the influence that had on the look of the Clerks animated series. The podcast should appear as a plugin that streams on the left hand side of the page once it loads up (give it a few extra seconds).
- Things always tend to slow up a bit over the Thanksgiving weekend, as folks get into the holiday spirit. We’re expecting a busier December than usual, though, with a lot of “Zack and Miri” news coming our way. We’re also putting the finishing touches on our dedicated Zack and Miri site, where we’ll collect all the news specific to that film, past, present, and future. Watch for it soon. See ya tomorrow!
Happy Thanksgiving 2007!

- Kevin is the featured “In The Company Of…” audio interview over at the Colin Murray website at the moment, though you will need to download the RealPlayer or RealPlayer plugin to listen. The interview is a long one, running 45 minutes, so well worth the download and install if you’re not already using it. The show is based in the UK. A direct link HERE to the audio itself may also work.
- And hey, while you’re in the audio-listening mood, how about an MP3 of Kevin’s call-in to the Opie & Anthony show last week to talk about the Zack and Miri casting announcements? This was the first interview he did since Seth and Elizabeth were officially revealed as the titular characters. Thanks as always to clipmaster Will Wilkins for doing the legwork.
- Congrats to longtime Askew friend Matt Damon, who was just named People Magazine’s “Sexiest Man Alive”, becoming the heir apparent to last year’s ruler, George Clooney. The issue includes a fun letter from Matt humbly, but humorously, trying to turn down the honor, as being too big. Aside: Wouldn’t it be cool to see Clooney show up in a View Askew Production one of these days? Hey, ya never know.
- Coming post-holiday — We’ll ramp up our coverage on “Zack and Miri” and chat up our thoughts on the cast and how it’s shaping up. That and lots more, so we’ll see ya back here at News Askew soon.
Own “Live Free or Die Hard” Today!
- “Live Free or Die Hard” hits DVD shelves today – This is the disc that contains that full length interview with Kevin and Bruce Willis as an extra, so if you want that complete collection, you gotta have this. Plus, hey, it’s Kevin in a DIE HARD MOVIE for goodness’ sake. How cool is that? You can own the film in theatrical or a slightly bloodier, more profanity-laden unrated version, which is what we’ll be picking up. Word has it that the unrated cut includes a lot more blood spurts, and some fun McClane swearing, but no major new scenes or plot changes. Get your copy “Live Free or Die Hard” on DVD tomorrow, available all over the friggin’ place.
