  • Kevin brought “Zack And Miri Make a Porno” to a WAY sold out screening at the Jacob Burns Film Center in upstate, New York last night and many lucky fans were in attendance. Take a look at some photos from the theater last night, outside and inside, a shot of some of the lucky fans from the View Askew WWWBoard in attendance, and more. The woman in the photo with Kevin is film critic Janet Maslin, who ran the Q&A and has been a supporter of View Askew for a long, long time. The fan photo features boarders: (from left) Spork Girl, Banana, TearsinRain, Silent Boba Fett (in front) Kevin, The Runt, Gully and our scooper, Movidude74. Click and enjoy. Were you there? Drop us a line, we’d love to hear what you thought of the film and the Q&A.

“Ranger Danger” = “Untitled Space Comedy”…

September 11th @ 9:33 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Kevin Rosen

  • Alright, so the headline’s got a bit of geekspeak programming lingo in there, but what we’re saying is, /Film has cornered Kevin to clear up the questions regarding the future project that he’s been chatting up about a comedy set in space. Most sites (us included) speculated that this MUST be the long in development “Ranger Danger” project (Randal’s screen-worn shit in “Clerks 2” seemed to hint the film was closer to reality). Now, thanks to this /Film article, we now know that these are TWO totally different projects. So, we’ve now got “Red State”, “Ranger Danger”, AND the untitled space comedy (possibly starring Seth Rogen) all in the planning stages. Sounds like we’ll at least have jobs here for the next few years! More news and clarification as hints continue to be dropped.

  • Kevin appeared on the CBC (Canada) Radio program “Q” this past Tuesday, September 9th. If ya missed it, like we did, we’ve got good news. The complete podcast of the appearance is available at their podcast download page or by a direct right-click and save HERE. He mentions wanting to not only FILM in Vancouver but SET a film in Vancouver somewhere down the line, interestingly enough. Also, he reveals that he’s just shot another Degrassi episode! Cooool.
  • Coming Soon runs a brief mention of “Porno” in their TIFF wrapup, as well as the promise of a big new interview with Kevin soon:

Those expecting raunchy sex and nudity in Kevin Smith’s Zack and Miri Make a Porno (Weinstein Co. – October 31) shouldn’t be disappointed, although there’s also a touching relationship comedy at the heart of it between the two main characters, played by Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks, who really elevate what might be seen as a fairly high concept premise. Fans of Smith should love it as much as his previous films, and except for one particular gross-out scene, it’s surprisingly classy despite all the usual swearing. (We have a great interview with Smith we’ll be running sometime soon.)

  • Nothing new here as the quote’s taken right from Kevin’s recent blog, but JoBlo did pick up on Kevin’s recent praise for actor Chris Pine playing the role of Kirk in the JJ Abrams “Star Trek” reboot. Check it out for a quick read, especially if you missed his praise for the film earlier in the month.
  • Catch Marilyn Ghigliotti’s award-nominated performance in “Dig” at the Socal Film Fest this Saturday, September 13th, at 11:30 AM in Huntington Beach Central Library. If you can’t make it to that screening, stop and say hello to her at The Hollywood Collectors & Celebrities Show on Oct 4th & 5th. Marilyn loves meeting her fans from the “Clerks” days, so don’t be shy, stop by and ask her for a photo or autograph!
  • Animated web series “The Nutshack” features main character Jack dressing up as Silent Bob in the third episode of their new second season. The Nutshack is on Wed nights, 10:00 PM PST on MYX or at the official Nutshack site.
  • On a sad note, we’d also like to acknowledge the passing of “Fletch” author Gregory Mcdonald, and express our condolences. Kevin has been a vocal fan of Mcdonald’s work for many years, to the point of hoping to adapt one of his books for a big screen “Fletch” revival. The project remains stuck in development, last we heard. Our condolences to family, fans, and friends of Mr. Mcdonald.

Z&M Toronto Film Fest Coverage…

  • “Zack and Miri Make a Porno” premiered in Toronto with 2 shows this week, and if you’ve been reading News Askew, you’ve seen some fantastic reviews from both fans and critics. Today, we go a bit more in depth, including some photos and video footage of the arrivals, and a true, but SPOILER-FILLED treat, the complete Q&A session that followed the world premiere screening.

Let’s start with the spoiler-free first. Elizabeth Banks, Jason Mewes, and of course Kevin were on hand for the premiere, and the TIFF’s website caught the arrivals and snapped a few nice photos as well.

Now, onto the juicy stuff. Once again, we warn you, MAJOR SPOILERS FOR THE FILM ARE CONTAINED IN THESE VIDEOS! After the world premiere, Kevin and the cast took to the stage for some audience Q&A, and it’s all available to you thanks to the miracle that is YouTube. Total of around 15 minutes total. Watch only if you’ve seen the film, or don’t mind having some of the best jokes spoiled for ya (we’re debating watching right now).

Rogen To Return As “Ranger Danger”?

  • The LA Times recently scored a cool quote from Kevin regarding casting Seth Rogen as his lead hero in what’s currently known as “View Askew 10”, though the more we think about it, may turn into the long-in-planning “Ranger Danger and the Danger Rangers”. Keep in mind, things change over the years, and Kevin may have retooled that film to a new theme/title or even come up with a totally different sci-fi superhero. We’ll see. However, current hints and quotes we’ve seen from Kevin are in line with “Ranger Danger” coming next after “Red State”. Here’s what JoBlo posted up today:

“First, I’m going to do a 180 turn and do a horror movie called ‘Red State,’ ” Smith said in an interview Sept. 7 at the Toronto International Film Festival. “It’s going to be a total horror-political-psychological movie without a funny line in it. Then I’m going to do the science-fiction superhero movie. It’s going to be an original superhero that I’ve created. It’s stewing right now. I want to do it, though, and, God willing, it will star Seth Rogen.”

See the full story over at the LA Times website. Kudos to Joblo as well for picking up on this scoop.

“Zack And Miri”: So What Say the Fans?

September 8th @ 7:35 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Corey Hurwitz, Matt Fielding

  • “Zack And Miri Make a Porno” is being presented for the first time anywhere in Canada this week, as part of the Toronto International Film Festival. We ran an extremely positive review from Variety that hit all the right notes, and we’ve got more critical acclaim coming up. But what about the fans? You folks? What do the likes of YOU think? We’ve got some non-spoiler reviews from some of our lucky readers who were in attendance for last night’s world premiere. And they sure seemed to love it. Take a gander:

      “Matt” says:

I got a chance to catch the World Premire of Zack and Miri Make a Porno last night at the Toronto Film Fest, so I thought I’d check in to share my thoughts, but keep it spoiler free.

The film played at the Ryerson Theater in Downtown Toronto. I was lucky enough to snag tickets online, as even as I arrived some 2 hours early, the non-ticket holding or “rush” line was already easily 100 people. The ticket holders line-up went all the way around the block by the time doors opened.

In attendance were Kevin, Elizabeth Banks, Katie Morgan, Ricky Mabe, and Mewes, who got to his seat by making a daring, MacGyver-esque roll and run across the stage, as the film was bring introduced by the festival presenter. Seth Rogan unfortunately couldn’t make it, as he’s filming “Funny People” with Judd Apatow, to which Kevin quipped “I asked him ‘C’mon! Whats Judd Apatow ever done for YOU?'”.

Afterwards, Kevin and the 4 stars who were in attendance did a very brief Q&A, with the festival presenter providing many laughs due to her uncomfortable reactions to Kevin and the Cast’s cuss laden responses.

      As for the movie itself…

This is a dirty, dirty movie. Bad language that boarders on Aristocrats level, and like the Aristocrats, about half way through you’re so desensitized to the vulgarity that you don’t even blink when hearing beautiful women casually discussing filthy things. Clerks 2’s Ass-to-Mouth conversation was like the tip of the iceberg in contrast to this film, but I never thought it went over the edge to the point where it was for shock.

But for all the dirty mouths and hilarious imagery, there actually is a very sweet, very relatable love story between the two titular characters.

Craig Robinson is the absolute comedic stand out of the movie. His brilliant subtle delivery raises the bar of kevin’s already clever dialogue. Another big surprise for me was just how funny Justin Long was, as gay porn actor “Brandon St. Randy”. Banks totally lights up the screen with great chemistry between her and Seth Rogan, who is his usual lovable geek self. Also easy on the eyes and fun to watch was the mainstream debut of real life porn star Katie Morgan (whom I imagine some may be familiar with from her other works). Also very cool was the brief cameo from Kenny Hotz, of “Kenny vs. Spenny” fame.

Overall, I don’t think anyone who’s a fan of Kevin’s will be disappointed. The comedy is wackier and the romanticism is less subtle than in (the easiest comparison) an Apatow sex-comedy, but I feel it works just as well, and still definitely in keeping with Kevin’s style (the Star Wars and Hockey references are still intact).

For me personally, it now ranks high in the Smith filmography. Well done, sir.

      “Corey” writes:

I was lucky to attend the World Premiere of Zack and Miri last night at TIFF08 (Toronto International Film Festival) and it was amazing. No spoilers here but needless to say there is one scene that elicited an extended response and laughter. Being a loyal Kevin Smith fan, I am happy that the film was so well received and hope this movie makes some mad bank for Kevin at the box office. Of note question wise, somebody asked why Seth Rogen wasn’t able to show up and in a hilarious response Kevin mentioned that he was currently filming another Judd Apatow movie out West, to which he quipped, “What the f_ck has Judd Apatow ever done for Seth?” Very funny to be sure. When asked whether he would consider doing a movie again with Rogen, Kevin responded, “maybe if he showed up tonight…..”

Seth embodied the clever and never clean work of Kevin and I can’t wait to see this flick again in the theatre.

Universal Critical Praise For “Porno”!

  • Well, it seems a LOT of reviewers caught wind of this World Premiere screening in Toronto and made it in to see “Zack And Miri Make a Porno” last night — The great news is that it’s being universally loved and praised, the bad news is that it’s flooding the net and this site with early reviews (some containing spoilers) 2 months in advance of the film’s release! This is the first time that we can recall seeing so many advanced reviews of a View Askew flick hitting the web so early, and we’ve been doing our best to stay away from as much as possible, having not seen the film yet. So, we’re skimming these for spoilers and will warn where we can, but as always, read at your own risk — The film will be fun, but of course you’ll dig it even more if you don’t know everything about it before October 31st.

We’re not going to run complete reviews here, as they are numerous, but instead take select NON-SPOILER sections, so you can safely read on our page. Clicking through may result in spoilers, and we’ll warn where we can.

      Screen Daily

“Kevin Smith is back and Seth Rogen’s got ’em. Or at least that’s how the ad copy should read for Smith’s libidinous rom-com, Zack and Miri Make a Porno. While Elizabeth Banks is ostensibly knocking about the premises as Rogen’s unexpected love interest, it is the cozy marriage of sensibilities between the director of Clerks and the co-writer/star of Superbad that gives this movie its particular go-for-the-groin, land-on-the-heart chemistry.”

(General minor spoilers regarding over-arching plot)

      Dark Horizons

“Smith’s latest script crackles with verbal and visual hilarity, taking risks in some areas, yet showing his sensitive side as well. In essence, Zack and Miri is a film about relationships, sex, love, the way we depend on each other, and amidst the film’s often raw, unbridled comedy, this is a very emotive love story.”

      (spoiler-free)

      Cinemablend

“Kevin Smith is known for his smart, edgy dialogue and there’s plenty of his brilliant, wordy style on display in Zack and Miri. He’s combined that with a great cast, maybe the most talented he’s ever worked with, and the result is one of Smith’s funniest, dirtiest, most gleefully offensive movies to date. “

(a few small spoilers in central paragraphs)

This being the first true raunchy R-rated comedy from Kevin and View Askew that’s a departure from the Askewniverse, to hear it being received so well can’t help but bring a smile to our face and a feeling of pride — Kevin has treated this one differently from the start, and continues to do so with the low key marketing, letting the film speak for itself. And with this big debut, it seems to be talking itself up QUITE well. Congrats to Kevin, the cast, and the crew on what looks to be the breakout hit of the Fall. Spread the word, and tell everyone you know to look for this one next month.

  • Yahoo Sports’ hockey guru “Puck Daddy” loves the hockey references in “Zack And Miri Make a Porno” – Take particular note of Traci Lords’ use of a hockey stick as the boom mic in this great shot. We can’t wait!
  • The Weinstein Co. has moved the release of the Kevin Smith cameo’ed “Fanboys” once again. The website reports a new release date of November the 26th. So we’ll have to wait a little longer to see Kristen Bell workin’ that Princess Leia costume. Dang.
  • Watch quick and you’ll also see a quick clip of the lovely Rosario in the opening of episode #1 of the new JoBlo movie show. And hey guys, we’re diggin’ the new show – Nice work. Want some more Rosario fun? Check out this hilarious video clip where a crew member whose mind is clearly wandering makes a pretty funny mistake. The player they meant to name is Panther tight end “Dante Rosario”. In the last 5 seconds of the video however, watch as Rosario Dawson is named player of the Panthers NFL game! Nice one, Fox. Is there anything Rosario Dawson can’t do?
  • Watch for a quick shot of a Clerks comic in this trailer for the very Clerks-looking upcoming indie punk flick “Scenes From Oblivion”.
  • The red band “Zack And Miri” trailer tops comment site Fazed.org today – Just the story and a bunch of talkback-style comments.
  • And finally today, on a fun note, the IMDB currently lists Scott Mosier as DIRECTOR of a 2009 release of “Fletch Won”! Either someone’s getting some crazy stuff by their censors or Scott’s been holding out on us…See ya next time!
