ABP & Clerks Down South…
- Vincent checked in with the FULL details on all his upcoming screenings of “A Better Place”. Check it out:
Hey y’all, just thought I’d let any Detroit-area Askewers that I’ll be there for the Detroit and Windsor InternationalFilm Festival screening of A BETTER PLACE- as the ever-helpful Michael Raben posted earlier, the film will be showing at St.Andrew’s Hall on Friday, November 6th at 5:20 P.M.- for a full schedule of the festival and ticket information,go to the link below (and if you’re gonna be there also check out Raben’s film PIZZA RUNNERS). Anyway, I’m flying in onthe afternoon of the 5th and staying for the duration of the festival, leaving in the early afternoon of the 9th.
Also, with regards to the Houston screening, the info we have set right now is that it’ll take place on Saturday,December 5th at the Angelika Film Center in Houston- the exact time and ticket prices I do not know just yet- and, of course, I’ll be there for a Q&A after the film. The screening was actually organised and set up by Jay W. from these here boards, a point which I don’t think was made fully clear. In any case, I believe he asked for interested partiesto e-mail him for info (of course it’ll be posted here as well as we get it) at jayw@mindless.com.
There’s also going to be a local spring at Monmouth University next semester but the details on that aren’t worked outyet. And yeah, I’m sure some people who read this will be all-fired up to post some flames telling me to “stop restingon your one laurel” or to “give up and move on” or “you’re the former motivator soon-to-be-washed up hack director” or “stop riding Kevin’s cotails” etc., and to those people I offer a pre-emptive FUCK YOU!!! To everybody else in either the Detroit/Michigan, Houston/Texas, or loval areas who want to see a pretty damn good indie film that I’m proud of and will NEVER give up on, I say, I hope to see you at the showings!

- Today’s DVD File (www.dvdfile.com) update had thed editor saying that he got confirmation from Miramax that Chasing Amy s being released as a special edition DVD in the first quarter of 99.
- Sources tell us that there are few refrences to Kevin’s flicks in the new Adam Warren “Roxy Dream” book that came out on Wednesday.
Commentary
- Again, things have been moderately quite ’round these parts lately, so updates have been fewer and less bulky, but that doesn’t mean we’re not paying attention. Kevin was on the board this morning answering quite a few questions, so if you’re the sort who likes to keep up with Kev’s appearances, be sure and stop over to check it out. - Sources tell us: The address of the NEW VA Offices/Secret Stash will be…35 Broad Street!
- Vincent checked in to let us know that, in addition to the ABP screening in Houston on the 5th, he’ll also be screening the flick at the Detroit and Windsor International Film Festival on November the 6th. Watch this site for more details on all these showings soon.
- Kev and Scott PRODUCING a Preacher movie? That’s what Variety says, at least. They list Garth Ennis as writer, Rachel Talalay as director, and the aforementioned duo in the producer spots. Hmmmm…
- Finally today, check out Ken Gale on WBAI-FM this Sunday, November 1st, when he interviews Kevin Smith (at MIDNIGHT) on their hour-long interview/talk show on comic books. WBAI-FM is a Pacifica network station, 99.5, in New York City. They’ll be chatting about Kevin’s roots as a comic fan, the filmwork, and his comic book writing. Should be fun!
ABP & Clerks Down South…
- Wanna see a couple great flicks up on the big screen? First, the BIG news: A screening of “A Better Place” has been announced. It’s taking place in Houston, Texas, on Decemeber the 5th. Writer/Editor/Director Vincent Pereira will be on hand for the event and around for a Q&A session afterwards. Don’t miss your chance to see the flick and meet Vincent if you’re in the area! We’ll have more details as we get them.
Also, Clerks will be showing at the Forest Hill Malco Cinema in Germantown, Tennessee (right outside Memphis) at midnight, November 21st. Join in the fun!

- Clerks has been voted the number 1 indie film of all time over at IFCTV. Congrats!
- Kevin appeared on A&E last night, during their Biography segment on Matt Damon. In it, he spoke about how he cried on the can after reading “Good Will Hunting” the first time & how he got it sold to Miramax when Castle Rock told Matt and Ben that, if they could find someone else to buy it, they would sell it.
- This unearthed bite appears in the October 5th issue of Avertising Age:
‘Force’ing Dogma to Fall
Kevin Smith, director of the creatively crass Gen X classics “Clerks” and “Chasing Amy,” has finished his fourth film, a potentially controversial take on faith called “Dogma.” But Smith says you won’t see it for at least a year. Don’t blame divine pressure, says Smith, pointing to another supernatural power: “Star Wars Episode One – The Phantom Menace,” due next May. “How can it not roll over everything?” Smith told Adages. Look for “Dogma” to hit box offices next fall.

Chris Rocks Salma’s World
Another scintillating snapshot form the GQ even was of Chris Rock hanging out in the Green Room sipping Evian and watching Game 4 of the World Series.
When Salma Hayek and George Clooney came backstage to pose for picures, Rock pulled aside a black curtain and said, “Nice a–.”
He was not refering to Clooney.
As soon as Hayek, who was wearing a stunning clingy white dress, finished with cameras, she sought out Rock. “What did you say to me?” she teased. “I heard you.” The two hugged, and then Hayek asked Rock, “How come you never call me? You never call me. How come you never call me?”
The happily married comic didn’t answer at first, but as soon as Hayek trailed away, Rock called out, “I’m coming to L.A. soon. I’ll call you.”
Sure he will.

Commentary
- Okay, it’s Sunday…And FINALLY…We’re back. The Boston trip is through, so now we can get back to the business at hand. Actually, we’ve had this update brewing for a couple days now, but MAJOR internet provider problems have been keeping us from getting online and checking mail. You should have all heard back from us by now if you sent in a scoop or general comment. We’ve got a LOT to talk about, so let’s get moving!
Alanis & Kev On MTV Live…
- Though we missed the appearance ourselves, many of you called to let us know that, on her MTV appearance this past weekend, Alanis discussed Dogma briefly… Kevin himself even called in, saying that her role in the film was “typecast” and that he chose her for the role based on her previous roles in You Cant Do That On Television. Yes, the rumor of her as “God” in the film was brought up.
Again, this is a good time for us to mention, since we seem to get endless mail about this, that God plays a pivotal part in Dogma, and discussing the role ruins some of the film’s major twists and surprises. For this reason, we’re not discussing it or stories relating to it on the page…See our Dogma: Rumor Control casting page for our thoughts on this as well as the rumors of Alanis’ God role in the film. Yes, we know all the answers. But nope, we’re not talking on this one.
Kevin Checks In…
- Kevin gave a summary of what he’s been up to lately on the WWWBoard recently, so we thought that, of course, you’d be interested to hear:
As Kim mentioned, we went to Alanis’ show Thursday night (which was tremendous, but no Run DMC). Today, I showed her the flick (which she dug), and spent some time (though not nearly enough) chatting. I wish she lived in Red Bank.
Tomorrow morning, Salma’s coming down to watch the flick (it’s been one of those ‘Dogma’-watching weeks, folks). Should be fun to watch her appreciate herself – she’s really great in the flick.
Big week for me coming up. I buy a house on Tuesday. It’s my first (if you don’t count either the condo that me, Scott, Ed, Hawk, Kristen, and at one point, Joey and Ben lived at, or the house I bought for my parents), so it’s what they call ‘a big step’. That’ll mean a change of address for me – no longer will I be a Red Bank resident (though the office and the store will still be here); I’ll be moving ten minutes away. Nice place, it is; pretty big, too, with an indoor pool and three-car garage. I should be completely moved in by December 1.
As if that’s not stressful enough, we’re also moving both the office and the comic book store this month. Hopefully, by December 1, the new Secret Stash will be up and running (wait’ll you see the signage we’ve got planned), and the expanded-digs View Askew will be in full effect (the new office isn’t as high profile as the old – it’s off Broad Street). We’ll probably have a shindig for the opening – invite a hundred or so of you, maybe show the trailer Scott and I cooked up. I’ll keep you posted.
Short of all that, not much else going on. If you haven’t read it yet, I urge you to pick up Jay and Silent Bob #2. I’m pretty proud of it, and folks seem to think it’s funny (which hurts my feelings, as I was going for something more poignant and dramatic in that issue).
The new digs (both home AND office) sound sweet. We’ll keep you posted on the proposed shindig, as well…And hopefully see some of you there!
