  • The long-awaited, Canadian home video release of Chasing Amy is TOMORROW!
  • Salma Hayek (Serendipity) fans take note: She’s the “babe of the week” over at PC Accelerator. Each day this week, you’ll see a handful of pics of the lovely lady…And judging by this sample, it’s certainly worth a visit!
  • Here’s a nice bite from the new CMJ Music Monthly (December):
Filmmaker Kevin Smith (Clerks) has been turning his hand to writing comics lately; he’ll have a revival of Geenarrow late this year, and his Jay and Silent Bob comics have been doing well, but his mainstream comics debut is the re-launched DAREDEVIL series for marvel. Judging by the first issue, he’s not going too far afield of what we expected from the exploits of the blind superhero– at least he’s giving artist Joe Quesada a lot of opportunities to draw Daredevil swinging by a rope all over the city– but he’s also digging into the Christian icongraphy that’s always been a subtext of the series (the first story line appears to concern a virgin birth). Besides, his filmaker’s knack for pacing, dialogue and choosing images that say a lot serves him well in his new medium.
  • Another fan site’s popped up: This one presents a View Askew character guide. Take a look HERE.

  • In the latest Adam Warren (Dirty Pair, Bubble Gum Crisis) Gen13 Comic, “Magical Drama Queen Roxy” mentions allthree movies (Chasing Amy, Clerks, and Mallrats). One of the characters in the comic book even says “I prefer’Mallrats’ personally”, “No really!, I feel that it is a terribly underrated little gem of a film!”, “‘Mallrats” has acertain ineffable verve and insouciance, a certain Je Ne Sais Quio, that makes the true, if tragicallyoverlooked, Crown Jewel in Kevin Smith’s cinematic oeuvre. Indeed, I’d say…”. At that point he gets blasted by the”Bad Person”. Funny stuff, there!
  • The latest issue of GQ features Chris Rock, George Clooney and Harrison Ford on the cover as “Men of the Year”.Inside, readers have voted Rock the television comic of the year.
  • As we’ve mentioned lately, another Askew figure from the past, Claire Forlani is getting some notice due to herrole in the upcoming “Meet Joe Black”. Maxim Magazine (which we’ve recently come to enjoy reading) mentions her in anarticle about breakout actresses for 1999:
Claire Forlani

Who: As the Grim Reaper’s girlfriend in this month’s Meet Joe Black, literally flirts with Death (Brad Pitt). Next: The Mystery Men, a superhero spoof with Fargo’s William H. Macy.
Think: A ballsier, less brittle Gwyneth Paltrow.
Why she’ll be big in 1999: “Meet Joe Black could do for her what Jerry Maguire did for Renee Zellweger,” says Juan Morales, executive editor at the hip culture mag Detour. “She’s soft yet strong, and she’s generally been better than the movies she’s in. Even opposite someone like Sean Connery in The Rock, she always stands out.”

  • Another “Clerks” screening opportunity! This one’s In Ft. Collins, Colorado. The Aggie theatre is showing the flickon Nov. 27 at 10pm and midnight, as a part of their “brew and view” series.

Daredevil Search Continues In #3…

  • In addition to the fantastic story and artwork, Daredevil’s 3rd issue contains even more of the fun Jay & Silent Bob search…On page 30, panel 5, two mysterious artists named “Jay” and “Bob” spray-painted their names onto a window sill. Also, on page 16’s second panel, a couple is leaving a theater where DOGMA is playing! Wishful thinking, eh?

Alanis Morisette

  • Naturally, with the new Alanis album arriving this Tuesday, she’s EVERYWHERE in the press. Entertainment Weekly has a nice piece on her, which keys in a bit on her Dogma role and working with Kevin. We’ll have the full story tomorrow.

By the way, this week’s issue also features a quote from Christina Ricci:

“Last night we rented Scream 2 and Chasing Amy. I always say I hate Chasing Amy, but I’ve never actually seen it. We ended up not watching it.” Strange, no?

  • A large Kevin Smith article appears in the December issue of Playboy Magazine…We’re working on gathering up a local copy of the text and/or scans of the piece, which is very good…So stay tuned. Not much in the way of new information appears in the article, but it’s some great publicity none the less.
