• Just a few things to report on today…Then it’s off to see the South Park movie, which is being hailed by critics everywhere! It’s about time Matt & Trey got some acclaim…We think all their flicks are hilarious — Also, try and catch the promo special that Comedy Central is running for the movie. Trey goes off on a few rants, including one about how he’d threatened to kick anyone’s ass that snagged the top-secret script and threw it on the internet. Genius. But seriously, folks, skip “Wild Wild West” and go see a GOOD movie tonight. It’ll be a shame when WWW’s box office shatters SP’s, as we think it inevitably will due to starpower alone, but hopefully the grosses for it will drop next week enough to prove to Warner that they need more than snappy visuals to put together a good flick. South Park cost $2 million to make — And will most certainly spell major profits, even if it’s just a moderate success.

Anyway, sorry for the off-topic rant…But it was just something we felt was important enough to mention. On with the show…

• The new issue of Wizard is out, and it contains more stuff on Kevin than EVER before! Just a testament to how great the guy’s books are, and how much his popularity is spreading through this great land of ours. Here’s a summary of what you’ll find in the book (well worth a purchase, as always, and this time more than EVER, due to #1 below):

• Wow, it’s a small internet out there. Bill Hunt, editor the The Digital Bits, hands down the best DVD site on the internet (we visit it daily), checked in with us to let us know not only that they’ve got the internet’s first review of the HIGHLY anticipated Mallrats: Special Edition DVD, but that they’re News Askew fans as well. Pretty cool stuff. We’re told our preview copy is ALSO on the way (we HOPE), and will of course post our own take on the disc as soon as it’s in our grubby little hands.

In the meantime, rather than take their copy, we suggest you surf over to the ‘Bits and read the Mallrats review. As expected, the disc did not disappoint in the least. We warn you, though, once you read this review, July 20th is gonna seem a LONNNNNNNNNG time away!

• “Clerks” will be on MovieMax (a division of Cinemax) a couple days next month: Mark your calendars! JULY 20 – 10:30 PM & JULY 26 – 4:05 AM.

• Joey Adams continued her massive press junket last night with an appearance on Craig Kilborn’s Late Late Show. Craig startedoff by listing both “Mallrats” and “Chasing Amy” as past films, and, rather than talking about “Big Daddy”, they moved onto talking about kissing and covered the kiss (with Carmen) in Chasing Amy. Craig liked it more then the one with Sandler.Can’t blame the guy for that.
• Bongo Comics features a “poochie back-up story” (4-pager) by Scott Shaw in issue #43 that includes some sort of familiar faces. Ever wonder what Jay and Silent Bob would look like as canines? Actually, neither did we, and we haven’tseen the book for ourselves. But, if that sorta thing may interest you, it may be worth seeking out. Bizarre.
• Variety speaks of a new writer [Bill Wisher] on board for the languishing Superman flick, again revitalizing hopes that the film will see the light of day. We still thick they’ll endup going with just a slightly modified version of Kevin’s script — If they’re smart, at least. When will these guys everlearn?
• Chris Rock is going to host the 1999 MTV Video Music Awards on Sept 9, from the Metropolitan Opera House in NYC (which is a REALLY small venue for something like this compared to previous locations like Radio City). The press release MTV sent out this afternoon notes halfway through it that “Rock will also be starring in the eagerly anticipated film”Dogma,” which is scheduled for a fall release…”. EAGERLY awaited. You betcha!
