- Sounds like a fun screening was held, but a disappointing turnout, in St. Louis…What’s wrong with you people!?! Hehehe…Alright, so maybe you have excuses. But still. Anyway, here’s an on-site report from last weekend’s Clerks screening held in Missouri. We don’t get many reports like this, so we thought we’d share:
Over the weekend I had the pleasure of attending both the Friday and Saturday midnight screenings of Clerks at Wehrenberg’s Arnold 14 Cine. I jumped at the chance to see this film on the big screen, as I missed it in its original release.
I nearly missed Friday’s screening because I was on a very lame date, but I made an excuse, dropped her off, and headed to the Arnold 14. I arrived about 30 minutes early in order to be sure the flick wasn’t sold out. Imagine my surprise when I walked into the theater and there were only ten people sitting there! Okay, I thought, it’s still early. Well, only four more people walked in. Another interesting fact about this audience was that I was the only person who was old enough to see this R rated flick! They were all about 16 years old! Come on St. Louis, get on the ball! I know there are more fans of Clerks out there!
Aside from it being a shitty print of the film and the small audience, I have no complaints. I can’t remember ever laughing so hard at the opening animation. And when the word “Clerks.” appeared on screen and the Love Among Freaks kicked in, I was in heaven. I laughed at each joke like I was watching this for the first time. I was entranced all the way through the close of the credits, where it says, “Jay and Silent Bob will return in ‘Dogma.’” (Can’t wait!!!)
Saturday, of course, I returned. Only this time I was not alone. I had brought my co-conspirator Jimmy the Hat. We arrived a bit late (during the Chewlie’s Rep’s scene), but it was cool. After all, I’ve seen this flick how many times? This time the audience was composed of 50 or so people, including some adults. This was closer to what I expected of a Clerks screening: laughing along with the audience, enjoying the whole experience of seeing the flick. (If only we could have been playing the Clerks drinking game, but management probably would have had something to say.) All in all, a cool screening.
If anyone in the St. Louis area is interested, this weekend the Arnold 14 is showing Suicide Kings at the same times, and next week is Reservoir Dogs.
Wanna catch a screening like this in YOUR area? The next one we see coming up is at Kent State’s Kent Cinema. Clerks will be playing on August 27th and 28th at midnight. Fill them seats!
