  • Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back will be part of the program on the Quart festival film program in Norway this summer, joining the ranks of such oher flicks at Men in Black 2 and British fave Ali G. It’s the largest festival in the area.
  • The Unrealistic Expectations website now has “Sound Boards” (clickable audio clips) from Clerks, Mallrats, AND Chasing Amy. You can check out their sites HERE.
  • You can find a new interview with Matt Damon at the Onion AV Club website. Damon’s been doing the circuit to promote The Bourne Identity.
  • A funny clip from the BBC Radio One program we mentioned the other day that aired earlier this week — There was one Interview clip which had Kevin talking about what is appealing for comic book fans, i.e. not being part of the masses, he went on to say “What kind of movies are Rush Hour 2, Planet of the Apes and Legally Blonde? – They’re dogshit movies”. After this quote, they immediately cut away to an interview about Batman with none other than Tim Burton. Fun coincidence!
  • IFC’s “Dinner for Five” episode featuring Joey Lauren Adams is re-airing this week. In it, she does talk a bit about Chasing Amy, being mistaken for Renee Zellweger, and more. Check your local listings, we do believe it should re-air again this Saturday at least.

  • Matt Booker was kind enough to send us a few exclusive shots taken at the Comics 2002 con in the UK. Click above to check out shots of vet Askew comic artist Duncan Fegredo and the outside of the “This is Our Youth” show featuring Matt Damon & Casey Affleck. Damon’s run on the play recently ended but we’re hearing good things about it.
  • Speaking of Damon, we got a report on a radio interview with him that was heard this morning, where some of his View Askew work was discussed:
Matt Damon was on Philly’s Y100 morning show this morning talking about “The Bourne Identity”. A really great interview. They talked about everything from the fact that the host Preston and producer Casey Boy absolutely love and crack up every time at the Lion Face/ Lemon Face scene in “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back”. Damon revealed that he has actually done that for performances on stage, including in the play he is performing in London where one of the British performers said, “Oh, God, you Americans actually do that!” (I’m paraphrasing here, but what do you want from me, I caught it on my way to work). He also talked about the filming of “Jersey Girl” in Philly with Ben, his cut cameo in “The Sum of All Fears”, the similarities between Philly and Boston, his pale skin in “The Talented Mr. Ripley” with him staying out of the sun for months and them painting him even paler, and how Kevin usually throws him a bone in his films but since it has a more serious tone he’s not sure if he’ll be using the same people as usual. All in all, a good interview. It was over the phone but originally scheduled to be in studio, something came up though. One point during the interview he even politely asked them to hold on and you could hear him yell in the background “Come in, yeah, hold on a minute” then came back to the interview and stayed a few more minutes after to talk.
  • Variety reports today that Askew vet Ethan Suplee has joined the cast of COLD MOUNTAIN, which will be directed by Anthony Minghella (”The English Patient”). The film will also star Nicole Kidman, Renee Zellweger, Jude Law, Natalie Portman, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Giovanni Ribisi, Brendan Gleeson, Donald Sutherland, Jena Malone, Ray Winstone, James Gammon, and Charlie Hunnam. Quite a cast!
  • Alanis Morisette has been nominated for 2 MMVAs (Much Music Video Awards) this year : Favourite Canadian Artist (Hands Clean) and the MuchMoreMusic Award (Hands Clean (version 1). The awards will be taking place (and airing) on June 16th.
  • This sounds like a fun place to work — A training video for “Global Video” employees in England reportedly starts with the famous scene from Clerks with Randal and the “Ruse” woman asking questions about the two videos. After the scene is played out some annoying guy comes on, and states that employees should NOT act like that. Too bad!
  • Finally, a happy birthday to Jason Mewes, who turns 28 today!

  • Original action figures from View Askew flicks are always cool — This fan’s converted a “Matilda” 12” doll, by 21st Century Toys, into “God” from Dogma. She admits that the likeness is a tad shaky, but she’s honing that skill! Hopefully we’ll see more from her soon. The clothes on the doll, by the way, were custom done as well.
  • More View Askew film appearances have shown up in the last two Invisibles Games at the Filmwise website.
  • A lot of you have been writing us about a country music song called “Chasing Amy”. Here’s some more info on that one:
Q I just heard a song called “Chasin’ Amy” and was wondering if it was inspired by the film of that name.

– Anne Haggerty, Herndon, Va.

A “We kind of stole that title!” admits Brett James with a laugh. He and co-writer Troy Verges were in a video store when they spotted the 1997 film Chasing Amy by writer/director Kevin Smith — and inspiration struck. They wrote the tune, Brett’s debut single, without seeing the movie. Brett jokes, “I’m gonna wait until it’s a Top 10!”

  • Clerks: The Cartoon vet Chris Bailey’s got a new series on The Disney Channel, called “Kim Possible”. Bailey’s got a great style (he of course created the perty logo you see at the top of this site) — If you’ve got the channel on your cable or satellite system, check your local listings!

  • One fan took this fun little South Park shockwave application to build a South Park likeness of Jay & Silent Bob (see above). What can you create?
  • At a recent concert (Y100’s FEZtival in Camden, NJ), one of the rappers from the Icelandic band “Quarashi” was wearing a Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back t-shirt during the show. Glad to hear the influence is spreading around the globe.

  • Will Wilkins has finally posted his compilation of fan interviews as they waited in line at Dave’s for the recent Jay & Silent Bob DVD signing. You can check out the 24 minute piece as Will chats with fans waiting in the extremely long line at his Netheads website. Kevin even grants Will a nice interview at the end of the segment. Enjoy!
  • In the new “Get Kraven” miniseries, the first few pages are about an independent filmmaker who’s working on a documentary but with a script, which they have rewritten by Kevin Smith. He has a big mention — it spans about four pages long, and we hear it’s a good one — The company’s corporate bigwig has a complete change of heart on the project when he heard that Kevin is attached. Check out the mini at your local comic shops.
  • Speaking of documentaries, Radio One’s Lamacq Live has the following documentary running at 11pm in the UK tomorrow:
Jun 10 – Faster Than A Speeding Bullet

2002 is the year the superhero comes of age. Sam ‘Evil Dead’ Raimi’s Spiderman hits cinemas in June, Pi’s Darren Aronofsky is set to direct Batman 5, Usual Suspects director Bryan Singer has signed up to X-Men 2, and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon’s Ang Lee has started work on The Hulk. How did men in tights get so cool? The Brits, that’s how. A new generation of British talent has taken the world of comics by storm, kicking the cartoon crusaders into a disfunctional 21st century world of politics, sex and drugs. Comics have grown up. And Hollywood is taking superheroes seriously too. At the last count 169 comic adaptatations were lining up to hit the big screen. Featuring Spiderman stars Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst, comics fans Phil Jupitus and Clerks director Kevin Smith, and the cream of the world’s comics industry, ‘Faster Than A Speeding Bullet’ takes a look at one of the 21st century’s coolest and most influential mediums

If you’re not in the UK, you can also listen online HERE, but don’t forget to do the time conversion!

  • It seems another 6 Degrees of Kevin Smith game has popped up over at this forum. Seems you can use Affleck to link back to Kevin quite a bit.
  • Mallrats started *for the first time* playing on the TQS network in Montreal. It’s the first TV debut of the French language version. Watch for some replays as the month goes on.
  • IGN.com recently ran a review for the Vanilla Sky DVD, giving it a 7 out of a possible 10, but really praising Jason Lee’s performance. The reviewer must be a News Askew reader, because of this one paragraph: “The movie isn’t terrible, just a bit flawed. Performances are strong all around, and as usual Jason Lee shines in what is a pretty small role (he’d make a great Fletch). “

Rumor Mill: Kevin Wanted To Direct “Batman” Film? NOPE!

June 7th @ 5:38 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Daniel Pursley, Edmundo Conchas, Mike Retro, Ian Mutoo, Robert Gough & Karla

  • Today’s big rumor: Kevin’s being courted to direct a Batman film. No word on how true this one is at all, but Cinecon and Batman-On-Film.com are both reporting that a rumor has started a rumor that Kevin himself might be courted by Warner Brothers to direct a Batman film (more than likely the “Year One” project that’s currently planned). This might have spread from the story over at AICN that claimed that the planned Batman: Year One director, Darren Aronofsky, and the Warners are in dispute over his current flick, “The Fountain”. In the past, Kevin has stated that he’s not into directing a superhero flick, but stranger things have certainly happened.

Kevin himself has responded to this and filled us in on a LOT of other stuff, we’ll save his post for a seperate story, just below. Read on…

Kevin Refutes Batman, Jersy Girl In PHILLY!

June 7th @ 5:36 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Kevin Smith

  • It’s about time for this! Kevin checked in with a TON of news, including a denial of the Batman rumor above, the news that Jersey Girl WILL shoot in PHILLY (just a hour or so away from us here), and LOTS more! Put on those protective goggles, folks, cuz this one’s definitely not for the kiddies:
Is It Safe?

Man, it was ugly in here for a little while.

Anyhoo, just checking in with some stuff.

Went to “Daredevil” again the other night, and saw the teaser that’ll run before “Minority Report.” It’s just flat-out tremendous. Lots of footage (in quick cuts, of course), including Ben in costume, Elektra Garner spinning her sais, and Bullseye in action. This oughta quiet anybody who’s running around cyber-space bitching about the flick.

For the record, I am NOT in talks with Warner Brothers about the “Batman” franchise (though after being on the “DD” set that handful of times, I wish I was). I don’t know where people get this stuff.

I’ve seen sculpts of the “Clerks” cartoon figures, and they’re genius.

Clete Shields is doing Jay and Silent Bob cold cast statues that we should have ready for Christmas, and they, too, are genius.

It’s looking like Philly for sure for the “Jersey Girl” shoot, with a week in Highlands and a week in NYC. Also, being based in Philly will allow us to hop over the bridge and actually shoot all non-stage stuff in New Jersey. Kind of appropriate, considering the film’s title.

Saw “The Bourne Identity” last night. If for no other reason, see it to watch Matty beat the living shit out of people. He comes off very Batman (comics Batman, not movie Batman).

Also saw “The Sum of All Fears” last week, in which Ben makes it very clear he’s a bona fide movie star now. So weird to watch the flick (which I really dug) and think “This motherfucker used to sleep on my couch.” I mean, it’d be like as if Harrison Ford used to sleep on my couch. Or Clooney. Or Pitt. Or all three of them together, fucking on my couch. And I was always like “Harrison! George! Brad! Stop getting cum all over my couch!” And they were like “We can’t help it, man! We loves to fuck man-pussy!”

Alright, it’s not like that at all. But you get the picture.

The completed “Spider-Man/Black Cat” first issue is done and off to the printers. Looks fucking gorgeous. Reads okay. I’ve gotta stop writing for insanely talented artists, because the script never lives up to the artwork. Time to start working with total no-talents, so that my story gets to outshine the art.

And after a month of working out and changing the diet completely, I’ve lost twenty pounds. Lots more to go, but a nice start. It’s feels good to drop the weight, but feels even better to be stronger, building muscle and whatnot. Mind you, I’m not so strong that I could physically stop Harrison Ford, George Clooney, and Brad Pitt from fucking on my couch, but still.

In closing, I don’t want any man-on-man-on-man three-ways on my couch. The coffee table, sure; but not the couch.

And don’t forget: Movie Poop Shoot. June 17th.

  • Kevin & Jennifer attended the recent premiere for the upcoming Matt Damon flick “The Bourne Identity” — You’ll find some photos of the couple at Wireimage.
  • In case you missed Affleck on Tech TV earlier this week, you can check out all the info online right HERE.
  • A Chasing Amy parody poster with Super Mario characters appears at the often scary “Something Awful” website today.
  • Dark Horizons reports that the teaser/trailer for Big Helium Dog is now available at the Angry Naked Pat site. Do not miss this hilarious piece, especially if you didn’t see it on the “A Better Place” DVD. It will have you dying to see this flick. Check it outHERE and enjoy! Tell everyone you know that you want to see Big Helium Dog! Maybe it’ll inspire Lynch and co. to get it out to the masses. It’s a really funny movie (not to mention the first appearance of your two fearless webmasters a View Askew film).
  • Oh, and as for the Movie Poop Shoot banner at the top of the page, expect the veil to lift on that one a little bit this coming Monday…Have a good weekend.

  • Tuesday night, Rob Zombie visited the Daredevil set and interviewed the cast on MTV’s new show, “Movie House”. If ya missed it, you can catch a rerun at these times: 6/7-2pm & 7:30pm, 6/9 – 5:30pm. You can also check out Rob’s interview with Ben and watch some footage at the MTV site.
  • Kevin gets a mention in the movie section of this month’s Playboy Magazine — In an article on the “Sophmore Slump” of all things. They mention Clerks being a great and acclaimed film and that Kevin publicly apologized for Mallrats. Later in the story, they give him praise for his directing ability.
  • Nicolags Cage mentioned Kevin’s Superman script briefly this morning when he made a surprise appearance on The Howard Stern Show:
Why Nic Cage Isn’t Superman
by Bob Gough
Nicolas Cage says he isn’t playing Superman because Kevin Smith’s script “would have been too expensive,” he told The Howard Stern Show.

The actor and then-director Tim Burton had “a great rapport,” Cage added. Cage surprised Stern by showing up at the studio during an interview with Chris Rock, who was to play Jimmy Olsen in the film.

Also, Cage said he turned down the role of Green Goblin in Spider-Man because he was offered a role in Adaptation by director Spike Jonez. “I was on an art track. I didn’t want to do a big blockbuster then.”

Cage was promoting Windtalkers, the John Woo-directed film about Navaho code-talkers in World War II which opens June 14. Rock was promoting Bad Company, the spy action film directed by Joel Schumacher and co-starring Anthony Hopkins, which opens tomorrow.

When Stern asked Rock if he thought Schumacher ruined the Batman movie franchise, the comedian/actor replied “Like it was that great of a movie before?”

This is the first time we recall seeing expense issues as the reason Kev’s script was tossed – Interesting. Thanks to Dynamic Forces for the story.

  • Project Greenlight / Stolen Summer DVD news: Reports are indicating that the 4-disc set might actually be the series AND the movie in one box, which would make the 4 disc size a bit more reasonable (but still leaves room for a TON of extras). Release for Stolen Summer is currently the same date as scheduled for Project Greenlight, September 24th.
  • You’ll find another small blurb on Kevin’s ACTOR benefit appearance at Silver Bullet Comics. Kevin helped to raise over $8000 for the cause.
  • During a recent radio interview with Matt Damon, KROQ’s Bean divulged that he thought Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back was one of the best films of the year, noting that Kevin is a genius.
  • Ink Tank ran another slight Jay & Bob reference last month that we never metnioned. Check that one out HERE.
  • Speaking of Damon, a new Matt Damon message board has opened at MattDamonForum.com.
  • Those of you that are still DVD-challenged might be happy to know you can get a Mallrats VHS brand new at Walmart for around $5, according to reports.
  • This is so gossipy we hate to post it, since it doesn’t even seem to be true, but we figure this will fend off all the mail we got on it so far. Apparently just because Damon’s cameo got cut from “Sum of All Fears”, folks are speculating that he and Affleck are fueding. Reports tell us that the workprint contained the cameo, but since Damon had such a silly look on his face due to the role, it had to go. Read about it at the IMDB.
  • Neither Ben Stein nor the contest knew this final round question on today’s “Win Ben Stein’s Money”: “What director of Clerks and Mallrats plays the character Silent Bob in his films?” Isn’t that show supposed to have TOUGH questions?
  • Here’s an advance review of the Affleck & Damon exec-produced film “The Third Wheel”, from their LivePlanet company, with a lot of the same Project Greenlight crew involved, which you’ll find on video shelves soon:
The Third Wheel

A Miramax Films release of an HSI-Tomorrow Films production in association with LivePlanet. Produced by Chris Moore, Stavros Merjos, Adam Rosenfelt, Chad Snopek. Executive producers, Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Yoram Pelman. Co-producer, Louis G. Friedman. Directed by Jordan Brady.

Stanley – Luke Wilson Diana – Denise Richards Phil – Jay Lacopo Michael – Ben Affleck Kevin – Matt Damon

By DAVID ROONEY

A relatively upscale cast struggles to pump life into “The Third Wheel,” a romantic comedy about a sweet-natured guy whose plans for a perfect night with the girl of his dreams are sabotaged by an eccentric intruder. With a little more wit and invention, this might have been a fun date-from-hell scenario along the lines of “After Hours.” But it quickly succumbs to soft scripting, lack of rhythm and poorly drawn characters. Pushed back repeatedly on Miramax’s schedule and still awaiting a U.S. release date, the film opened in Italy to limp business Friday, redubbed “Duet for Three” by local distrib Eagle Pictures. Name talent involved should provide commercial redemption as a video title.

Shot in summer 1999, the modest-looking production was exec produced by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. Script was written by Jay Lacopo, who starred in the Affleck-directed 1993 short “I Killed My Lesbian Wife, Hung Her on a Meat Hook, and Now I Have a Three-Picture Deal at Disney.” Maybe Affleck finds this guy funny, but others may disagree based on his script and his acting in an irritating key role. The writer-star even gets a featured rap number in the end credits with no connection to anything that’s come before.

All-round nice guy Stanley (Luke Wilson), for reasons never quite made clear, hasn’t had a date in a long time. The arrival in his office of hotshot administrator Diana (Denise Richards) gives Stanley a romantic goal, and he finally succeeds in asking her out after much egging on by office colleague Michael (Affleck).

Michael and the entire office staff monitor Stanley’s progress during the date, placing bets on his chances of physical contact. But while things start out promisingly, the couple are hijacked by Phil (Lacopo), a homeless guy hit by Stanley’s car. Phil makes it his single-minded mission to play Good Samaritan in romantically challenged Stanley’s quest to win Diana, but instead provokes one disaster after another.

Given the inconsistency with which Phil and other characters are developed, the closing revelation of his real m.o. provides no great surprise. Nor does the cynicism of his self-serving agenda bring any edge to the pedestrian proceedings. Lacopo has an amusing moment or two but too often grates, playing Phil as a well-meaning dolt but also a leechlike obsessive. One scene in particular in which Phil engages a busload of passengers in a childlike sing-along game is excruciatingly cute.

Wilson keeps the material afloat to a degree with his relaxed charm. But that same natural ease seems at odds with Stanley’s supposed awkwardness with women. Richards has even less to work with, her business savvy and unexpected sweetness conveyed more through other people’s perceptions of her than anything communicated by the character herself. However, the couple has more appeal than the lackluster material, and the predictably rosy outcome will make this a serviceable enough date movie for undemanding audiences.

Affleck registers smugly in an ill-conceived supporting role, while an unbilled Damon appears briefly as Diana’s hostile ex-boyfriend.

Despite his background as a standup comic and TV presenter, director Jordan Brady — who ostentatiously acknowledges his own work with a poster for his first feature, “Dill Scallion,” plastered across the side of a bus — brings uneven timing and little personality to the comedy, uninterestingly shot in anonymous L.A. locations.
