- A very close source indicates to us that the street name was voted on and approved at the Oct. 1st Paulsboro council meeting. The sign is in the Mayor’s possession, awaiting installation. The reason for the delay is the JG shooting schedule. Kevin’s people decided that Monday and Tuesday were too busy to take time from Kevin’s schedule (and they were jam-packed). We should have an official date for the dedication ceremony very, very soon.

- Finally today, some more evidence to back up Hooper X’s theory? See ya next time.
Commentary…
- Howdy folks! How’s things? It’s getting really cold REALLY fast here in Central PA this year, temps dropped from the 70’s and into the low 50’s in a day. Crazy. They’re seeing similar temps in Philly and Paulsboro, where Jersey Girl is filming, though so far, the weather hasn’t interfered with the schedule. Shooting is still scheduled to wrap up early next month. More on JG’s filming below.
On the TV front, been watching a lot of it, thanks to the miracle that is the VCR. Shows worth checking out this year: Buffy & Angel (both off to a good start this year), Alias, Smallville, The Sopranos, the always consistent Law & Orders…NBC’s Boomtown also had a couple good episodes to kick off their season. Looking forward to the start of Fox’s “24” next week as well, especially after its gutsy finale last year. One of the best season finales of all time. The Simpsons should finally be back soon as well, hopefully they’ve got a good Halloween episode on tap for this year.
Theatrically, checked out the long-awaited “The Rules of Attraction”, yet another flick that Lions Gate saved due to controversy. It’s a pretty entertaining, nasty little film, and one worth looking for. Sadly, the box office was really low last week, so find it fast. It’s diretor Roger Avary’s first theatrical effort since the excellent “Killing Zoe”.
Alrighty, let’s check out what’s new in the world of Askew today:
Jersey Girl Set: November 14, 2003 Release?
- Jersey Girl continues filming…On Friday, they began a 3-day shoot in Paulsboro which is wrapping up today. After a set visit on Friday, several extras continued to be used in the scene, with today being the largest of the three. A full auditorium audience was required, thus, we expect a lot of reports will start to pop up here and there. The scene will likely be one of the more elaborate, showcase scenes of the movie, and perhaps the most memorable.
We’re awaiting word from the powers that be on what we can and can’t say regarding this scene, as we are selectively keeping spoilers to a minimum here at the site. We can tell you that a bunch of the cast was on hand, and it was certainly THE scene to be on set for, a wonderful treat. Watch for updates at this site, or surf around the View Askew WWWBoard, as we’re sure that reports will start appearing from those lucky fans in attendance. We’ll have a set report of our own here at the site as soon as we get it spoiler checked!
By the way, a piece of literature handed out to extras had the date of November 14th, 2003 on it — A possible release date for the film? This would be on track with the Fall 2003 timeframe. The date IS a Friday, too. You heard it here first!
“Kevin Smith Way” – Small Update…
- The town of Paulsboro still intends to name a street after Kevin, though the dates that we received regarding the ceremony were obviously given to us in haste — Several approvals and signatures are needed before the street can be officially renamed. We’ll keep you posted on this. As far as we know, the street will get the name without any objection, but procedure must still be followed.

- Lowes Cineplex theaters are having an auction with the proceeds going to Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Their auctions involve a unique, cool idea – Popcorn buckets designed by celebrities. One of the buckets is designed by Affleck and the rest of the Daredevil cast including Colin Farrell and Jenifer Garner. To place a bid, check out the item HERE.
- Right on schedule, The Fourth Rail logged their review of Spidey/Black Cat #3 — Yet again they recommend this book, scoring it an 8/10. Don’t forget to pick this issue up! It’s now arriving at comic stores everywhere.
- The trailer for Jason Lee’s “A Guy Thing” is now up in the wonderful Quicktime format, at the official Apple Quicktime site. Speaking of Lee, the trailer for “Dreamcatcher” should be attached to a bunch of “The Ring” prints (the creepy flick opens up this Friday, the 18th).
- And speaking of that flick, the prize in this week’s Bikkit.com “Guess the Gross” contest is a Mallrats Blueprint poster (Operation Drive-By). The contest is to guess the opening weekend gross of The Ring.
- Check out a new Jersey Girl set visit report from UK Askew staffer Brian Harley at www.ukaskew.com.
- Yet another extra report from the Jersey Girl Hard Rock Cafe shoot is up at Afflecktopia. This one’s very detailed, but does take you through the entire process of what being an extra is all about.
- Speaking of UK stuff, Chasing Amy is showing on one of the main British TV channels this Saturday, BBC2, at 10:30 PM.
- The great Silent Bob is quoted today over at the Moviepunks website.
- And finally today, here’s an interesting blurb on Affleck/Damon-produced “The Third Wheel” from this article on delayed film releases:
“Sometimes you have to face the fact that some movies are better off on TV or DVD than in a theater,” explains Miramax Films co-chief Harvey Weinstein. “You’re asking a lot of an audience to pay nearly $10 to see a movie, so you don’t want them to feel cheated.”
Most of these movies never see the light of day for an all-too-obvious reason: They’re awful. In its review of “D-Tox,” which was released overseas earlier this year, Variety called the film “almost totally merit-free.” One Internet review of a “Third Wheel” test screening called it “a laugh-free comedy,” saying Wilson was “excruciating to watch” in the lead role. Even Weinstein admits that “The Third Wheel” would be better off as a video release. But since Affleck and Matt Damon, who have close ties with Miramax, produced the film, Weinstein says he’ll let them make the final call.
“It’s up to Ben,” says Weinstein. “He’s going to run the company someday anyway, so I have to be nice to him.”
Affleck run Miramax? Wow. Hopefully that means we’ll have a job for a lot of years…
Our Contest Winner Checks In!
- Seth Bedwell, who won News Askew’s 10 millionth hit contest a little while back, visited Paulsboro, New Jersey to film his “Jersey Girl” walk-on role last week. He had a blast, and logged a nice report with us, complete with photos of the video store and surrounding area (the same area we visited in our recent set report). Read about it all right HERE. Seth got to meet and greet some of the cast & crew, and will certainly get some nice screentime as one of the customers inside the video store. Congratulations again to Seth for the big win, and thanks to everyone from View Askew who took such good care of the guy when he was in town.
Jersey Girl Updates At “Exit 37”!
- We’re now starting to begin some of our exclusive Jersey Girl coverage at “Exit 37”. This means that some stories will ONLY be available at that site, so be sure to stop over there for all the latest stories related to Jersey Girl. Here’s what we’ve added to the site today, along with some other interesting tidbits about the flick in general:
- Rumors tell us that cut footage being screened looks absolutely amazing, and all the performances are fantastic. Even though the film itself is scheduled for a Fall 2003 release, Kevin hopes to have a rough cut complete by Christmas.
- The Roadside Attractions bit in which Kevin interviews Liv Tyler (and others) is scheduled to air on November 5th (tentatively).
- One of us visited the set on Friday, and what a scene it was to be there for! Details are on the way with a full set report, coming soon.
- Jason Biggs, Matt Damon, and Jason Lee have wrapped on the film, with Biggs’ role complete and the latter two’s cameos in the can.
- A nice photo of the lighthouse in Paulsboro, dressed for it’s Jersey Girl Christmas night scene, and details on how you can tour it.
So get going! Check out Exit 37, News Askew’s Jersey Girl site!

- Spiderman/Black Cat: The Evil That Men Do #3 ships this week! This is issue number 3 of a planned series of 5, written by Kevin Smith with art by Terry and Rachel Dodson. Look for it at your favorite local comic shop in a few days.
- Yet another View Askew reference made at the Something Awful site, where they take images and manipulate them around in Photoshop or similar software.
“Hard Rock” JG Shoot Details!
- Well, we’ve known this day was coming for some time — One of the biggest days for extras on the Jersey Girl set and also one of the most public locations for the film wrapped shooting yesterday — Philadelphia’s Hard Rock Cafe, which we’ve eaten many a cheeseburger at, doubled for the New York location as scenes were filmed there this week.
Naturally, we’ve got a bunch of reports from the set, from press and fans alike. We’ll run those reports here for ya, and they’ll also be archived over at Exit 37 along with our recent set visit and others.
First, let’s get the Philly Inquirer blurb in:
Brian Garber wasn’t an extra, but still has a story to tell regarding what he saw when he found the set. And finally, Bobby Miller reports his experiences as an extra at his Rigged Productions website.
