  • No Kevin call into ALICE today, though we’re now hearing it’ll take place between 10 and 1 tomorrow. Sorry for the false alarm. Will’s on the case ready to encode, so you can bet we’ll have audio for you soon. It’ll be great to hear what Kevin’s got to say about working on the flick, since many have asked when diary updates will resume — Give the dude some space, though, he’s gotta be swamped as hell with work and life lately. We’ll let you know when it resumes, of course. And check us this weekend for the that clip (Gotta go see LAND OF THE DEAD tomorrow first though — Ah yes, the long awaited return of Romero’s “Dead” series! Whoo hoo!)
  • Kevin was spotted on a program called “Degrassi: Unscripted” on the Noggin channel this week. If you see it re-airing, let us know. In the show, Kevin appears in some interview clips discussing the show.
  • Affleck a good Pop? MSNBC says so:
Poor Kevin Federline. Britney Spears’ hubby Kevin Federline didn’t get a single vote in a Child magazine online poll asking, Which celeb dad-to-be – or celeb who is rumored-to-be a dad-to-be – do you think will make the best father? Seal came in first with 38 percent of the vote; 22 percent voted for Ben Affleck, and “American Idol” finalist Bo Bice came in with with 21 percent. Other soon-to-be dads that made the list include actors Nicolas Cage (14 percent) and Heath Ledger (5 percent) and tennis champ Lleyton Hewitt (2 percent).

We’re thinking his sincere, touching Jersey Girl performance won fans over!

  • And since we’re talking Affleck, here’s a couple interesting bits courtesy the IMDB from Affleck’s “Sum of All Fears”:
– One of Ben Affleck’s predecessors in the role of Jack Ryan was Alec Baldwin. In Pearl Harbor (2001), Baldwin tells Affleck, “You remind me of me some twenty years ago.”

– When Ben Affleck first arrived on the set he told director Phil Alden Robinson, “Nice working with you again.” Robinson said, “What do you mean ‘again’?”. Affleck explained that when Robinson was filming the scene in Boston’s Fenway Park for Field of Dreams (1989), he and Matt Damon were among the thousands of extras.

News Askew Retro: Clerks Feature Study, Part II!

June 20th @ 5:25 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • It’s a day late due to a crazy weekend, so thanks for your patience: We’re proud to present another edition of our View Askew time capsule, News Askew Retro. This week, part TWO of the Clerks Feature Study. What you’re about to listen to is a case study of “Clerks”, conducted by a group of film students. They consider the film an excellent example due to the small budget and, obviously, huge success.

The timeframe of this study is about a year after Clerks was purchased off the independent film market, and marks the last major screening of Clerks BEFORE it went to a worldwide release.

Kevin, Mosier, Pierson, Hawk, and Sloss are in attendance to share stories of the experience of making Clerks with the audience. Check out the youth in Kev’s voice, in what’s likely to be one of the first lengthy Q&A sessions ever recorded on audio. Again, we’re very proud to present this one. It’s a true View Askew time capsule. Enjoy.

If you missed last week’s check the archives or scroll down for Part 1, dated last Sunday, or simply visit the Retro page to catch up on this and all items so far! We’ll be back with more Retro this Sunday night.

Kev Talks To Uncut: UK!

June 14th @ 5:31 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • The interview was conducted back in March, but this is NEW, FRESH stuff from Kevin as he sat down for a one on one with with the UK’s “Uncut” magazine. In it, Kevin hits topics such as the birth of Miramax, Tarantino, working with Affleck, discovering talent, and heaps more. Here’s a taste:
What makes you think that open season on Affleck is over?

I think that Truth, Justice and the American Way (Allen Coulter’s upcoming movie about the mystery surrounding typecast 50’s Superman actor George Reeves’ sudden death, starring Affleck as Reeves] is the movie that’ll put him back on top. It’s Ben Affleck, a guy whose career has been troubled over the last year, playing George Reeves, a guy who’s career had been troubled for many years prior to his death. It’s a perfect role for him, and he’s not the lead – the movie’s really about the guy investigating Reeves’ death [played by Adrien Brody], so Affleck doesn’t have to carry the whole fucking thing. It’s a perfect comeback vehicle and we know this because we have Pulp Fiction as the model – this is the Travolta role from Pulp Fiction.

Were you around when Miramax picked up the movie that kicked Affleck & Damon into the big leagues – Good Will Hunting?

Back when I was writing Chasing Amy for Affleck, he gave me the Good Will Hunting script and asked me to put it in front of Harvey. I read it in the bathroom. I was there for two hours and just read the whole fucking script – y’know, fucking weeping on the toilet, which I normally do when I look between my legs. I fucking loved the script and I called Harvey and said “Boss, I know this sounds stupid, but this script my friends wrote, it’s like the best thing I’ve ever read, it’s fucking breathtaking. Like it’s good, it’s Oscar good…. I think. But it comes with a huge turnaround cost. It’s currently with Castle Rock, who picked it up for $800 grand – it’ll probably cost you a million bucks”. Harvey tells me that he never pays that kind of money for a script, that’s really fucking high, but what the fuck, send it over anyway and he’ll read it over the weekend. First thing Monday, Harvey calls me back and starts booming: “I’m buying this, I fucking love it.” So that put us all in the Miramax family – Matt, Ben and me. I was already kind of there with Chasing Amy, but that lodged us firmly in there with Harvey and Bob.

You can read every word in full at the Uncut website!

First Look: Lee in “My Name Is Earl”!

June 14th @ 5:29 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • We’ve got another FIRST LOOK at live action footage for ya today, this time from the highly anticipated sitcom coming to NBC this Fall, “My Name is Earl”. As you know, our beloved Jason Lee stars in his first featured TV role as the title character, a down on his luck, criminal-type who wins the lottery and has an epiphany about his life.

CanWest Media Sales looks to be marketing the show to the Canadian audience as well for a Fall pickup, and thus have shared with the world (and YOU!) the first clip from the program. Having read the pilot script, Lee seems to capture the character perfectly, and it certainly seems like the show will have that offbeat “Raising Arizona”-like charm to it. We’re predicting a big winner in this.

CHECK OUT THE CLIP NOW!

Watch for a glimpse of fellow Askew alum Ethan Suplee in the role of Earl’s brother in the clip.
