The “Red State” Trailer: Day Two…

December 24th, 2010 @ 10:22 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • How to know you’ve got a good movie trailer on your hands: It gets people talking. The press takes notice. And, most of all, it makes you ask the queston: “How soon can I see that movie?”. The “Red State” trailer, which took the web by storm and surprise yesterday, does all those things. The quick-edit, score and dialogue-free style has us replaying it over and over again, catching new glimpses each time. Just as Kevin promised, “Red State” looks like nothing he’s ever put in front of a camera before – Unrelenting, bleak, and DARK. We love it.

Take a look at some of our favorite shots grabbed from the teaser – If you blinked when you watched, you might have missed them.

We rushed the link up yesterday, but have had some time to catch up on everything else now — Here’s Kevin’s lead-in and introduction from yesterday’s twitter stream when he unleashed the video:

It’s been a bumpy 2010 – some people might even say turbulent. I’m not clear on turbulence concept as I didn’t fly much this year… *ahem*

I also got into scraps galore – some justified, some childish. I can make no excuses but to admit I’ve learned from both. We rise, we fall. We turned one podcast into MANY this year. I released the highest grossing flick I’ve ever made. I had FUN. All thanks to you good people. For someone in my line of work, no paycheck – no matter how astronomical – can hold a candle to an an appreciative & invested audience.

You folks ARE worth far more to me than you can ever know – or SHOULD ever know, for that matter, as it’d give you the thin girl upper-hand. Every day, I wake up, take a leak, & open Twitter. And you “strangers” Tweet sentiments so nurturing/encouraging, it’s as if you’re family. I’d like to thank you, the folks on Twitter – with whom I spend more time than I do my own family – for your 2010 cyber-affection/attention.

And the best way I can thank you is to STRONGLY suggest you click on the homepage for http://smodcast.com Merry Christmas, SModomites.

And then came the net’s reaction, to which Kevin said this:

Via @B_Hebertson “People talking shit on movie news sites pisses me off” Why? They’re talking about RedState – that’s all that matters.

However, if you wanna lessen the sting, let’s do some simple math: over @ AICN, inarguably the site with the most trash-talkin’est of all the TalkBack boards offered at any of the movie-centric urls, the RedState trailer’s getting lots of chatter – the most, it would seem, with 120 comments. And that’s not 120 different people making comments; just 120 comments. Let’s be VERY generous and say 100 people made those 120 comments since that story went up around noon. That’s not bad; again – good enough to make it the current top commented story. However, If I walk away from Twitter to take a leak, I’ll return to about 120 new comments – no repeats, all uniques. And go read my Twitter feed today: there are literally THOUSANDS of Tweeted kudos from people who’re gonna pay to see RedState as soon as they can. And those cranks at the movie site comments section that sparked this discussion? They’re gonna pay to see it, too – just to see if they’re right. If they don’t they can’t be considered serious cineastes, can they? So don’t sweat the comments, man: a) the number of negative comments in the TalkBack section of the most popular movie website on the planet number under 100; and, as explained, they’re gonna give me their money anyway. And b) ALL chatter is good chatter. So let ’em scrum in the corners all they want; I’m way up here with the puck, and the goalie’s a sieve.

We also loved this post from AICN gury Harry Knowles on the new trailer as well as his thoughts on Kevin’s other works. Take a look.

And finally, what about that mysterious MARCH title card at the end? Seems that, according to Kevin, it’s just a plan/goal, but he seems confident that the film will be ready for a quick turn around once distribtuion is announced:

Via @ToastedSchizo “So ballsy of you to put ‘March’ at the end without a distrib.” JFK told a story about his Grandfather, who grew up in Ireland. Walking home from school, there was this long, high stone wall that – if gotten over – halved the time it took to get home. One day JFK’s grandfather threw his cap over the wall – knowing if he came home without the cap, he’d be bitch-slapped. To fully motivate himself to do something difficult, he committed – to a risky degree. Tagging that trailer with March was me throwing my hat over the wall. #FuckWaiting

Kevin continues to show his dedication and love for the film by taking it right to the most simple of approaches — He’s created his own poster art, cut his own trailer, handled all his own press. The movie cost just under $4 million to take, and the trailer was cut in less than 20 minutes. Yes, TWENTY MINUTES!

“Red State”, today, is the most talked-about film on the internet. We’re just glad that March 2011 is just a few months away. Can’t wait? Watch this site for details on how you can be part of the “Red State of the Union”, semester #2, at SModcastle, later in January.

  • The people behind this look back at 2010 flicks really should be hired by the Oscars or at least the MTV awards to throw together film clippage — It’s an amazing look back at the films produced or released this year, and a must-watch (and yes, it’s got a little “Cop Out” in there, too).
  • Kevin says that the new Weinstein deal announced last week makes the long-awaited (and in our opinion, superior) “Jersey Girl Extended Cut” Bluray a “real possibility”.
  • Among those on the wish list for a future edition of SMovieMakers at SModcastle? JJ Abrams. With “Super 8” on the fringe, perhaps he’d like to show clippage to a select audience of 50? If you’ve got a connection, let him know.
  • Longtime View Askew contributor, and star of the “Blow Hard” and “Mo and Glo” podcasts, Malcolm Ingram has a new quest — To make a porno. Stay tuned to new episodes of “Blow Hard” for details. You can also get involved immediately through a donation on that site.
  • With today being Christmas eve, just in case this is our last visit with you pre-holidays, let us wish you and yours the very best of holidays — Thanks for spending a few minutes with News Askew, whether you’re here at the ‘ol .com, on twitter, or your other e-delivery product of choice. And don’t forget, big changes and enhancements to News Askew are coming in 2011. See you soon.

The “Red State” Teaser Has Arrived!

December 23rd, 2010 @ 6:19 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Holy. Cow. The “Red State” teaser, previously only seen by live audiences at Kevin’s appearances, has been unleashed onto the web today. And wow, just wow. This is some amazing looking stuff here. Having previously only heard the audio, we had no idea what sort of mayhem and darkness was being synced up along with it. This movie looks dark, raw, gritty, and absolutely bleak — And that’s exactly that movie Kevin has said he wanted “Red State” to be ever since he finished the script’s first draft.

You can watch the trailer exclusively over at www.smodcast.com immediately. And if you’re like us, you’re going to run it over, and over, and over again, and even freeze it to look at some the quickly edited stuff that you think you saw and might have missed. We’ll be posting some of our favorite shots from this later, as well.

Curiously, the production company of “Harvey’s Boys” in the title credit suggests that the famous Weinstein brother may have already expressed an interest in the project, though we likely may have to wait for Sundance to find out for sure. The fact that a final card of “MARCH” appears on the trailer hits that a distributor may have already been acquired, considering the release window being established. Kevin’s always used a different production company for each of his films, so that’s not a surprise, but that name choice on the title card has caused some speculation.

We’ll have a local copy as well as screen grabs for you later. Until then, head over to www.smodcast.com for your first glimpse at “Red State” in action.

SModcast 3D Live – Boderline Bar & Grill, Jan 14!

We’ll keep you posted on upcoming live dates, as we’re expecting a mix of 2011 shows both at the official SModcastle as well as on the road for folks who are unable to make the trip into L.A. to check it out. With a continually growing network of podcasts, there’s always something new to check out.

Of course, don’t forget to visit the official SModcastle with tickets now on sale for the remaining shows of 2010. 2011 show announcements coming soon! You can also catch “Babble On” and “Jay & Silent Bob Get Old” every Friday night at the Jon Lovitz Comedy Club at Citywalk, Universal Studios. Kevin has stated that when possible, some shows will grow from the SModcastle to larger venues, but the castle will live on as other live gigs get announced, as a spot to try out new programming as well as hold special intimate events.

  • Congrats to the hilarious cast of characters on “Tell ‘Em Steve-Dave” for sweeping up at the 2010 Podcast Awards. They won both categories for which they were nominated, “Best Comedy Podcast” and the People’s Choice, best podcast of the year! Subscribe to the free show today via the SModcast network and find our what everyone’s talking about.
  • While a lot of this stuff has made it in better quality audio to the SModcast network, we wanted to point you in the direction of Mike “Movie Miguel”‘s YouTube page, where he’s taken a lot of video from recent months of Kevin appearances in the Ohio area. If you missed them, or were there and want to relive them, worth a stop.
  • The great Jason Lee will star AND DIRECT the TV program “Shredd: The Jon Johnsonsen Story”, based on a skateboarder who winds up in a coma for 25 years (1985 to the present), and wakes up in a 40 year old body, with the mind of a teenager. Bleeding Cool has details:

Jason Lee, his production company Reveille and Jack Black’s shingle Electric Dynamite are set to head up Shredd: The Jon Johnsonsen Story, about a skateboarder who in 1985 was top of his game until a skating accident put him into a coma. 25 years later he awakens in a 40 year old body, but with the mind of a teenager.

Jason Lee and Luke Watson have already written a pilot episode which Lee plans to direct and act in. During his teenage years before he stumbled into acting Lee himself was on the professional skateboarding circuit, so it will definitely be interesting to see him return to his roots with his performance in this role.

Although Electric Dynamite and Reveille have been in a two year contract deal, this marks the first TV pilot developed together from both companies, although each has their own projects in development. Lee is currently starring in TNT’s Memphis Beat which has just been renewed for a second series, and if production for Shredd goes ahead he could be playing roles in both shows around the same time.

No other cast members have been confirmed yet, and although this basic premise has been covered before in various other stories, with these production companies and Jason Lee to direct and star it looks to be a show well worth watching out for. Deadline report that the show will air on Adult Swim.

Fans of Cartoon Network’s “Adult Swim” know how subversive and bizarre its programming can be. We’ll be looking forward to seeing what Lee does for late night programming.

  • Kevin’s groundbreaking work on the web is mentioned in a recent New York Times article titled “Hitchcock Wouldíve Had a Web Site”. It doesn’t mention the fact that Kevin blazed trails with one of the first filmmaker sites way back in 1995 (possibly the very first feature film director to have one, even). It’s some nice ink, though:

Mr. Smith, whose early films include Clerks and Dogma (in which he plays a character called Silent Bob), was an early Internet adopter and started connecting with his fans online in the 1990s. More recent ventures include asitecalledfred.com (interviews, columns, podcasts), and silentbobspeaks.com, where he shares his latest movie news (the recently wrapped “Red State”) and peeks inside his house. (“This is my closet.”) The site links to his other sites, including viewaskew.com, where you can buy tickets to the stage shows he performs that build on his online relationships with his fans. If you’re so inclined, you can open your wallets and buy Dogma shot glasses, Jersey Girl bumper stickers and even a Silent Bob coat for $387.03 (sizes small to 2XL).

  • “The Wrap” picks up on Kevin’s recently tweeted admiration for “The King’s Speech”. The story of King George VI of Britain, the film is currently scoring very highly on the IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes. One of the best reviewed of the year.
  • Feast Your Eyes on TWO New “Red State” One Sheets!

    • Take your look at the two latest “Red State” posters, exclusively revealed via two charitable donators, Excellent Creations Inc. (XCINC) and @PuggyEatingClub. These two shots reveal our first looks at the character of Ralph Garman as Caleb and “The Sons”. These sheets come to us because of the generosity of the hosts, who donated $1700 and $1800 to The Kenny Gordon Foundation.

We like to give the sites some exclusivity before we run the one sheets here. With that said, we’re now presenting copies of all the released sheets so far. If you pick up one of these posters, please do give credit to the original bidders. If you also include the link for The Kenny Gordon Foundation charity in your story/article, you’re not only being a thorough journalist, you’re also helping to save actual lives – lives whose progress you’ll be able to trace via http://www.kennygordonfoundation.com/. It only takes a few seconds longer to provide all available facts in any story. Including THIS fact can help save a life.

There will be more opportunities for exclusive one sheets in the coming days and weeks. Watch @ThatKevinSmith on Twitter for your shot, as the auctions happen very quickly. It’s not only a fantastic opportunity to bring some traffic to your web site or organization, it’s a chance to help a good cause as well.

Witness the Birth of the SMonologue!

    December 20th, 2010 @ 9:46 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

    • He’s calling it the “SMonologue” — Kevin’s tweets on a subject got somewhat numerous over the weekend, so he’s taken them and summarized them in an interesting blog post up at his Silent Bob Speaks site. Surf over for the whole thing, which includes thoughts on his career and future. Here’s a few choice snippets:

“…Nobody wanted to pay me not to go to my relatives when I didn’t wanna. ???Sometimes, the path isn’t direct.

S’like folks who start movie websites: they just love movies. Not sure what their end-game’s gonna be, but writing about them & hosting trailers is a start, right? For some, the end-game will be to make a film. For some, just having people read what they have to say about a subject they love is good enough. Regardless, the smart ones will always find a way to earn off it. Because ???once you’ve got a taste for working for yourself, doing what you love doing? You’ll work 10x as hard as any brick-layer or paralegal, but you’ll NEVER feel it, never recognize it.

And let the cranks cat-call from the sidelines; they lack balls of any element, let alone brass.”

“…The work is long & will take you away from lots of other people & things. But ???you will never know/feel/realize it’s work – not until you look back.

This Sundance marks 17 years since the CLERKS debut changed my life. But from the moment we got our foot in the door, the workload intensified a thousand fold. And I never noticed – because I loved it so much. For 15 of those 17 years, I didn’t stop.

Cranks will tell you I’ve been living off CLERKS forever, but that’s dismissive self-deception. We got our foot in the door & I never stopped. And while the changes were imperceptible to some, each time out, we worked a little harder at developing the various muscles of storytelling.

In that analogy, Red State is the most physically fit of all the stories I’ve told. It’s the sum total of nearly two decades of hard work (for which, most times, I was handsomely overcompensated, monetarily & otherwise). And it never ???felt like work when we were crafting them. What made them feel like work was slugging it out with jackasses over opinion, or getting by the fear-driven gatekeepers who finance, market, or rate the stories I’ve tried to tell.”

We’re currently compiling our summary of Kevin’s other tweets that may be of interest for you. More news in a bit. To read the entire SMonologue, hit up @ThatKevinSmith or the blog post.

“Red State”: Sundance Screening Times & More…

    December 13th, 2010 @ 8:33 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

    • We loved this series of tweets from Kevin’s recent tweet-a-thon, which covers his reasoning for no longer entering his films into competition at festivals. Great stuff, which we’ve cobbled together for you here straight ahead:

I asked Harvey if we could compete with CHASING AMY back in ’97. I knew we had something special & I figured we could’ve walked with at LEAST an acting award. Said Harvey “Sundance is about emerging filmmakers. You’re already established. You gain nothing by competing, even if you win an award.” But it was @TheJonGordon who put it best, re: AMY competing. Jon had been Harvey’s assistant for years before being promoted to an exec. It was @TheJonGordon who got Harvey to re-watch CLERKS at Sundance, after he’d passed months before & walked out during the third scene. And when @TheJonGordon was made an exec, one of his first moves was to sign me & @SMosier to an exclusive overall deal at Miramax. That deal wound up running from fall of ’95 to the end of ’07 – 12 years. Under that overall deal, I made everything from CHASING AMY to ZACK & MIRI.

So it’s December ’96 & Harvey’s just urged me not to submit CHASING AMY for the competition category at Sundance. He’s urging premiere only. But it was @TheJonGordon who said the thing that made the most sense, re: competing. “You’re a returning alumnus. You can probably get AMY into any of the other sections. If you compete, you hurt a freshman’s potential to show THEIR Clerks.” @TheJonGordon was right. And human.

So if I go to any film festival, I try not to compete. Harvey’s reasoning was right, but @TheJonGordon hit the nail on the head. Competition categories are where dreams come true & lives can be changed with a screening. All my dreams started coming true in January of 1994. And the thought of gilding the lily by competing unnecessarily & possibly robbing someone like me of THEIR shot? That’s too Gordon Gecko for me.

So, years later, @TheJonGordon is my RedState producer – the guy who found the loot & made it happen when nobody else could or wanted to. And there we were, looking at the Sundance paperwork for our RedState submission. And someone else in the room asked “Competition, right?” And I smiled at the guy who’d helped give me & ViewAskew a home for 12 yrs & who sweated RedState into existence and said to @TheJonGordon, “I can’t fuck a freshman.” The 20 year old Kev cried betrayal at this sentiment, but fuck him. So competition was never a consideration.

Later in January, during the festival, “Red State” will mark its public world premiere, where Kevin still plans to auction distribution off like so:

Via @pklain “Will you determine RedState distributor at Sundance by highest bid, marketing strategy, or what?” Biggest balls. And checkbook.

Here’s a new Sundance article in anticipation of the big premiere. Minor plot spoilers ahead:

Ever since Clerks (co-winner of the Filmmakers Trophy at the 1994 Sundance Film Festival), Kevin Smith has been known for his sharp, subversive, comedic writing. He shifts from comedy to horror with Red State and aptly demonstrates that good writing transcends genre.

Red State begins by following three horny high school boys who come across an online ad from an older woman looking for a gang bang. Boys being boys, they hit the road to satisfy their libidinal urges. But what begins as a fantasy takes a dark turn as they come face-to-face with a terrifying “holy” force with a fatal agenda.

Instead of relying on archetypes and predictable formulas, Smith meticulously fashions all-too-real characters, utilizing exceptional performances (notably by Michael Parks) and an intelligent script. His realistic style gives the film an intimate feeling, heightening the terror to biblical proportions. Red State is a shocking new kind of horror film that aggressively confronts higher powers and extreme doctrines with a vengeance.

Festival attendees can now login to the site and add a screening to their calendar. 3 shows are currently on the books: Sunday, January 23rd at 6:00 PM, Monday January 24th at 8:30 AM (both in Park City), and Wednesday, January 26th at 9:00 PM (Salt Lake City).

Huge congratulations to all involved with the network – Topping iTunes is no small feat and a major honor.
