- Outrage on all the internet’s DVD sites started today with Alliance’s announcement that they’d been pressed by Disney into the discontinuation of their Special Edition DVDs, starting with the highly anticipated Chasing Amy and From Dusk ‘Til Dawn discs. The Digital Bits and DVD File both did a report on it. We’d definitely recommend you read the Bits’ editorial in full, though we’re not gonna reprint it here.
In summary though, their points are outstanding. Buena Vista got jealous and upset because Alliance was showing them how to handle a DVD release properly and making them look bad. Which they deserve. There’s just no excuse for taking a flick with tons of special edition content and putting it out stripped down, ESPECIALLY with full intention of re-releasing it 2 years down the road in a new edition. Then again, perhaps that’s what the suits had in mind all along — Release all their flicks stripped down then go back down the road with better versions in order to hit their customers up for their hard-earned cash TWICE. The Bits says this isn’t acceptable from Disney…We’ll take it a step further and say this is bad business no matter WHO you are. Just rotten. At least they got Clerks right.
Now, for those of you that ordered through DVD-Depot, whom we sponsored, they’ve checked in with a full report on what’s gonna happen to your orders. Sounds like they’ve got it all under control:
We got off the phone with Alliance this morning and confirmed therumors that have been flying around the net lately. Basically BuenaVista (Disney aka The Big Mouse), put the pressure on Alliance to pullthese editions because they made Disney look bad. They weren’t happythat a Canadian company was making their product look sub par, likethey did previously with Pulp Fiction, Good Will Hunting andTrainspotting Special Editions.
The discs will still arrive BUT, they will be at the same time andwith the same features as the US Versions. We at the Depot arepersonally disgusted with the way Alliance has screwed us and ourcustomers. Why they announce a disk 4 months previous and then make noformal announcement until days after the street date, is unforgivable.
However, there is not much we can do about it as it is totally out ofour control. Now if you have pre-ordered these discs from our company, here is what is going to happen:
If you ordered either From Dusk Till Dawn:SE or Chasing Amy:SE as asingle – It is now cancelled and there is no need to email us.
If you ordered both of these titles – they are now cancelled and thereis no need to email us.
If you ordered either one of/both of Amy/Dusk, and added in an in stock title(ie. Pulp Fiction, Trainspotting etc) then we have NOT cancelled yourorder. We will send out the balance of your order ASAP. If you wouldrather cancel the order then email us at the address we have set up.
We have set up a special email address for these requests and it is:confirm@dv-depot.com
Once again we apologize for this unfortunate occurrence, but trust menobody is more upset about this then we are.
Please do not email us about this issue, we are busy enough already with this mess!
If you wish to email Alliance to voice your displeasure, here is their email address:homevideo@allianceatlantis.com
Alright, so you all feel bummed now, huh? Well, read the next story, it might perk ya up a bit.
