  • SModcast continues this week with the second of the Red Bank episodes with Walt and Bry. And man, is this a great one. Listen to some totally candid stuff from the slightly off-mic Bryan Johnson who talks about his current medications. Fantastic stuff. Once again, SModcast proves it is a podcast like no other. Episode 35, titled “Dr. Smith and the Medicine Show” is now available exclusively via Quick Stop Entertainment and well worth your downloading and listening time. We can’t get enough. Don’t take our word for it though, check it out FREE today.
  • Jay is listed as a guest at this year’s “FX Show Toy and Comic Convention” in Orlando, FL. The con dates are January 25-27, 2008, and it all goes down at at the Orange County Convention Center. FX usually really comes through with their guests, so we’re expecting this will come through. We’ll keep you posted, of course, as this is the first we have heard of this booking.
  • Are the artists of “World War Hulk Frontline” from Marvel big “My Name Is Earl” fans? Check out this scan of issue 4, and see if two of these onlookers don’t resemble Earl and Darnell.
  • And finally today, a blast from the past — We’ve told you about Kevin protesting Dogma, but have you ever SEEN it? The famous News 12 footage is now available online and worth a look — Yes, Kevin protested his own film, and the news crew didn’t even know it. Classic stuff, dating back almost 10 years now. Ah, those were the days! We’ll see ya next time, with a new interview and much more.

  • After “Die Hard” took top honors in a recent action flick list from Entertainment Weekly, they are now also naming the star, Bruce Willis (as John McClane), as the #1 action hero of all time, according to a new photo gallery at their site. Matt Damon (as Jason Bourne) comes in at 12.
  • And last, but certainly not least today, you dug the Jay & Silent Bob Short F#cking Version — Now, behold the Dogma counterpart. Once again, a hearty laugh packed in 51 crazy seconds. Have a weekend, we’ll see ya back here soon.

  • Our pal Ben Affleck’s directorial debut, “Gone Baby Gone”, has been benefitting from great word of mouth from those who have screened it early. Today, Collider.com provides us with FIVE NEW CLIPS from the film, the first we’ve seen clippage (other than the trailer) anywhere. The film hits theaters everywhere on October 19th, just a few short weeks from now.
  • In DVD news today, Jason Lee’s UNDERDOG arrives December 18th. If you missed it in the theater, your kids may dig it — Plus, you get to hear ‘ol Lee throughout. And speaking of Lee, the great Season Two of “My Name Is Earl” is now available everywhere — The Target edition features a lenticular cover and a mini Earl poster. The cover, which features the Earl characters as cartoon characters, is way cool.
  • And finally today, in Retro news, it’s great when this stuff comes back to us — We promoted a Dogma panel with Chris Rock and Kevin on Charlie Rose way back in 1999 — Now, that very show is available on YouTube! Skip to around 25 minutes into the program for the interview. We’ll see you again soon, thanks for dropping by today.

  • Wanna win something REALLY cool? How about a Reaper poster, signed by director Kevin Smith himself? TV Squad’s got one to give away, and it’s as posting a comment on their website. You can only enter once, and a winner will be chosen at random. If you snag it, let us know — We’re tempted to enter ourselves though now that we’ve let the cat out of the bag, we expect the comment thread to run pretty wild over there. You’re welcome.
  • Starting this week, Clerks II is now FINALLY available on DVD in South Africa, sadly though, in a slimmed-down single disc edition. But hey, it’s better than nothin’.
  • The FX dude behind “Dogma”, “Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back” and “Vulgar”, Vincent Guastini, is the subject of a new video interview. He talks about his effects work, childhood and life and gives insight to why and how he got into this business. Among the films Vincent talks about in this in-depth 14-part Q & A formatted interview are the ground breaking thinning prosthetics in the film “Requiem For A Dream”, how he took over the make-up effects on his first studio epic of “The Last Of the Mohicans”, the animatronic effects in the film “Dogma”, and more. He also talks of his relationship with Kevin in the piece. Watch it all in a nifty question by question interactive interview over at “Interviewing Hollywood”.

  • Congrats to Matt Damon who was just honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Ah, we still remember the days of his brief appearances in the MTV shorts and “Chasing Amy”. Good on ya, Matt, you’ve come a long way. Here’s hoping we see Damon back in a future View Askew project some day, too. In the meantime, catch his critically-acclaimed turn in The Bourne Ultimatum in theaters this weekend.
  • A brief “Dogma” mention comes up in AOL’s list of “The 77 Most Unforgettable Movie Songs” :

      75. Alanis Morissette, ‘Uninvited’ (‘City of Angels,’ 1998) One year after Alanis penned this heavenly, Oscar-worthy song for a syrupy film about angels, she was cast as God in Kevin Smith’s brilliantly blasphemous ‘Dogma.’ Coincidence? — M. Tye Comer
  • Moviehole gives “The Shark Is Still Working” (Kevin has a “narrated by” credit) four out of five stars in this DVD review.
  • Kevin gets a mention in the July 29th Austin American-Statesman in a question about Askew alum Claire Forlani. This scan comes from that newspaper.
  • CBS sportsline.com has this article about Prince’s love of basketball, with an alternate history if he had become a basketball player. It quotes Kevin telling the story of filming in Paisly Park from “Evening”:

Kevin “Silent Bob” Smith spends a half-hour of his An Evening With Kevin Smith DVD spilling some of the secret life of Prince he learned while filming a documentary at Paisley Park. The chunky filmmaker was obsessed with the funky hitmaker’s fashion sense. Why all the Shakespearean getups and high heels?

One of Prince’s assistants assured Smith that Prince wears warm-ups and sneakers when he plays basketball. Nothing hand-made. Typical store-bought stuff. From Nordstrom’s.

Norstrom’s sells stuff in Prince’s size? Smith asks. Yes, the assistant explains — in the boys department. “That is so (effin’) cute!” Smith marvels.

  • Jason Lee gets a bit of vindication for his Emmy snub in EW’s “Yay Emmys, Boo Emmys” list :

      BOO, EMMYS!

Jason Lee (My Name Is Earl) doesn’t make the cut

Where’s Jason Lee? I understand there are only [a few] nominees per category, but [Lee and Lauren Graham] are the leads of long-running shows who consistently do GREAT jobs. —Dio_K

The nominations stink this year…. Jason Lee is about a 100 times funnier than [Charlie] Sheen. No wonder the ratings for the Emmys has been dropping, they have no clue as to what is good TV. —Tisa

A Dogma Sequel? Huh!

November 28th @ 11:10 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Jay, Luke Pinion

  • After a fan on the View Askew board asked, “Kevin, the way you ended Dogma left room for a sequel, have you ever considered doing one? Possibly following the LAST scion?”, Kevin had a surprising, telling response today. Check this out:
So weird you should ask this, because ever since 9/11, I have been thinking about a sequel of sorts. I mean, the worst terrorist attack on American soil was religiously bent. In the wake of said attack, the leader of the “Free World” outed himself as pretty damned Christian. In the last election, rather than a quagmire war abroad, the big issue was whether or not gay marriage was moral.

Back when I made “Dogma”, I always maintained that another movie about religion wouldn’t be forthcoming, as “Dogma” was the product of 28 years of religious and spiritual meditation, and I’d kinda shot my wad on the subject. Now? I think I might have more to say.

And, yes – the Last Scion would be at the epicenter of it. And she’d have to be played by Alanis.

And we’d need a bigger budget – because the entire third act would be the Apocalypse.

Scary thing is this: the film would have to touch on Islam. And unlike the Cathloic League, when those cats don’t like what you do, they issue a death warrant on yer ass (see Rushdie). And now that I’ve got a family, I’m not as free to stir the shit-pot as I was when I was single, back when I made “Dogma”. I mean, now I’ve gotta think about more than my own safety and well-being.

But regardless – yeah, a “Dogma” followup’s been swimming around in my head for some time now.

P.S. – Interesting “Dogma”-related sidebar: I recently received a glowing “Dogma”-praising email from a recent fan, who began his missive with “My name’s Tom Clancy. I do books.” It was surreal and really wonderful.

So, WOW! How about that? We’d sure love to see it. And we’re also sure any of the remaining cast who were needed back would come back in an instant. And for those of you sequel-haters out there, we think once you see Clerks 2, you’ll be begging for Mallrats 2, Chasing Amy 2, etc…etc…

On a final note, Film Threat has quicky picked up on the idea, and polls users on the front page about the sequel idea. Why not go over there and give YOUR opinion?

Wanna Tour Dogma’s Locations?

November 4th @ 11:47 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Joe Fulton

  • Being one of the earliest and most memorable experiences in our career here at News Askew, we were lucky enough to visit the Dogma set in Pittsburgh when the flick was being made (mere days after Matt & Ben won the Oscar, by the way). Visiting a live movie set is quite an amazing experience for a fan, but we also feel that visiting once-used locations in films you love can be just as satisfying.

Lucky for you, if you’re in the Pittsburgh area, Joe Fulton, with the help of the Pittsburgh Film Office, is compiling a tour locations list for some of “Dogma”’s most memorable scenes. Complete with photos and addresses, Joe shows you where you can find stuff such as the famous Diner, Cardinal Glick’s church, the airport (of course), even the Rite-Aid that was once the first Mooby’s.

Joe’s looking for help and info on filling in some other locales, and we know some of you who are reading know, so help him out if you’re so inclined. And even if you can’t make it to Pittsburgh, check out the very nicely-composed article, complete with tons of photos.

This is one to bookmark for the archives!

  • Comedy Central’s showing Dogma clips advertising their 4th of July weekend — So we’re expecting the film will air multiple times. In edited format, of course. Check your listings. It makes great background BBQ entertainment.
  • Another View Askew vet in a television series? Looks like Jay’s mommy dearest (Ever Carradine) is jumping back into the TV fray with a supporting role in the upcoming TV series, said to be for ABC, “Commander-In-Chief”. Geena Davis returns, again, to network TV. Davis plays the VP, though through the untimely death of the President, slides into the top spot.

  • There’s a good bit of trivia surrounding Dogma on the IMDB today:
This Oscar-winning actress turned down the role of God in Dogma, which later went to Alanis Morissette.

Anyone know the answer? We’ll give you a hint. The initials AREN’T E.T. Still give up? Click HERE.

  • Spot the slight Dogma reference in one of the photo captions of this “Seed of Chucky” review from horror supersite chud.com.
  • In the Will Smith flick “Hitch”, there’s a character some think be a reference to Allegra Coleman, a phantom superstar from the 90s. Interestingly enough, that name ties right into a Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back star. Wanna learn more? Read this interesting tidbit at the Museum of Hoaxes.
  • And finally today, was perhaps Brandi on to something when she was leaving her socks on “making whoopi”? Dutch scientists seem to think so. See you again soon! Thanks for dropping by today.
