- Attention, Facebook recruits! If you ran over to Facebook to join up with Kevin’s new site, you might need to move to his new location. The original account was a lower level that permitted only 5,000 friends, which of course Kevin had in no time. So, move your butt over to the new location with unlimited accounts, as the original one will be closing up shortly. We do apologize for any inconvenience.
- Kevin called into KROQ radio’s “Kevin and Bean” morning show on Monday to discuss the writers’ strike. Podbean now hosts podcast (MP3) versions of the program, so the call-in can be heard at their library. It’s the show dated November 6th, 2007. The site allows you to download or stream. Kevin’s appearance is mentioned in the loglines for that day.

- SModcast returns with another new episode today — Writer’s strikes be damned! Kevin returns with special guest Jason Mewes for a Jay & Bob-cast, another near-hour of entertainment and musings. While it’s unsure on what the schedule will become when “Zack and Miri” kicks into full gear, it’s nice to see Kevin keeping with the scheduile, the best reason to look forward to Mondays every week. This edition:
SModcast 36: I’ll Stop the World and Melt with Mewes –In which a pair of relics from mid-90’s pop culture talk about getting old and boring, examine the conditions under which sexual congress with the breathing challenged might be acceptable, discuss the alternative brances of a family tree, and take “Paper or plastic?â€to a whole new level.
Note – SModcasts that have started airing on XM during the weekends have, for some reason, had some or all of the music contained in them removed. We assume this may be a rights issue. Next episode brings us SModcast #37, which we can’t help but think will have some sort of significance and surprises. - Props come in today from a fan who enjoyed Malc’s “Small Town, Gay Bar” via the new Netflix streaming media player — The quality’s as good as getting the DVD, but immediate and direct to your PC as a Netflix subscriber. Check out the technology, and Malcs acclaimed documentary, today!
- We’re big Jason Lee fans around here, so we’re always happy to report new film work for the guy — Especially this latest one, “The Other Side”, which looks to be a fantasy film for adults , a big change from all that kid-friendly fare he’s been doing lately. The loglines, cast, and fantasy nature have us intrigued. We’ll keep you posted on the latest updates.
- Speaking of stuff to watch DVD, check out the funny turn by our own Jason Mewes in “The Tripper”, now in stores for rental or purchase. The horror/comedy marks the directorial debut of David Arquette, and the first in a recent string of genre turns for Mewes.
Audio: Kevin On “Bryant Park Project”…
- Kevin calls into NPR program “The Bryant Park Project” for a very positive interview to talk up the new book. They say:
The writer, director, actor and comics lover talks up his best-selling new book, My Boring-Ass Life: The Uncomfortably Candid Diary of Kevin Smith.“Believe me, there are people who don’t enjoy me or the minutiae of my life,” says the creative force behind Clerks, Mallrats and Chasing Amy. “I’ve dealt with them on the Internet quite a lot.”
Listen to Smith’s interview here, then check out his site at Viewaskew.com.
The link’s a bit hard to see, so just look for the “Listen” icon at the top of the NPR page. The interview is all book-focused and runs around 9 minutes in total. The interviewer even reads right from the book, which we loved. You’ll also learn where the “uncomfortably candid” came from. Part II is on the way tomorrow – We’ll let you know when and where to find it.

- SModcast continues this week with the second of the Red Bank episodes with Walt and Bry. And man, is this a great one. Listen to some totally candid stuff from the slightly off-mic Bryan Johnson who talks about his current medications. Fantastic stuff. Once again, SModcast proves it is a podcast like no other. Episode 35, titled “Dr. Smith and the Medicine Show” is now available exclusively via Quick Stop Entertainment and well worth your downloading and listening time. We can’t get enough. Don’t take our word for it though, check it out FREE today.
- Jay is listed as a guest at this year’s “FX Show Toy and Comic Convention” in Orlando, FL. The con dates are January 25-27, 2008, and it all goes down at at the Orange County Convention Center. FX usually really comes through with their guests, so we’re expecting this will come through. We’ll keep you posted, of course, as this is the first we have heard of this booking.
- Are the artists of “World War Hulk Frontline” from Marvel big “My Name Is Earl” fans? Check out this scan of issue 4, and see if two of these onlookers don’t resemble Earl and Darnell.
- And finally today, a blast from the past — We’ve told you about Kevin protesting Dogma, but have you ever SEEN it? The famous News 12 footage is now available online and worth a look — Yes, Kevin protested his own film, and the news crew didn’t even know it. Classic stuff, dating back almost 10 years now. Ah, those were the days! We’ll see ya next time, with a new interview and much more.

Stash West: Radio Askew Coverage & Photos…
- Once again, and possibly for the last time ever, View Askew fans lined the streets of Westwood, CA over the weekend for the final event at Stash West – Kevin’s book signing. We’ve got a couple photos above for you from the event. Got a report or a story on your day? Let us know.
Want more in-depth coverage of the event and the festivities afterwards? Our pal Will at Radio Askew has you covered. Kevin does indeed confirm that pre-production on Zack and Miri happens in November, and filming in January. With cold, snowy temps in Pittsburgh, could THAT be our shooting locale? We’d sure love it as it’s just a 3 hour drive into set for us if that’s the case. Also, we second the nomination for “Dexter” as one of last year’s best shows — The first season was indeed fantastic. Check out season 2, airing now on Showtime. But there’s so much more.Visit the official Radio Askew site to check out this episode and all of Will’s great work over the years. Like SModcast, it’s a free MP3 podcast that’s done purely for the joy of it, as a gift to all the fans out there. Kudos to Will on the ultimate “get” – A live Kevin Smith exclusive interview!

Two More Appearances: Watch!
- The book tour continues, and Kevin’s got enough stories in the arsenal to tell different tales everywhere he goes! Via the magical YouTube, here’s two more appearances from the book tour, which continues to the UK later this month:
- 9.26.07 – Kevin appears on Canadian talk show “The Hour with George Stroumboulopoulos” and chats uncensored about blogging, anal fissures, Zack & Miri, and more.
- 10.3.07 – Kevin appears on “The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson” and discusses high tea, blogging, and canines.
Did anyone notice that George mentioned “Pittsburgh” in passing when talking about filming “Zack & Miri”? Hmmmm…
Got more Kevin appearances? Let us know. While all this international press is tough to track down on cable, the magic of the internet seems to allow us to archive most of this stuff for posterity.

- Kevin made another in-studio appearance on XM’s “Opie And Anthony” program this week, and our ‘ol pal Will wasn’t far behind with a complete capture of the 5 hour program — Minus commercials, of course. Tune into the 64k mp3 stream , or download it for later — Listen to Kevin hang with the guys and bring up the possibility of joining the XM family himself!
Will’s always good enough to do these captures, and never even asks us for a plug, but we’re giving him one anyway, darn it — RadioAskew is now back with some new programming, so be sure to take a listen to his professional podcast at the official site – All the latest pop culture stuff with an Askew slant to it.
- In his blog, “The Criterion Contraption”, Matthew Dessem has revisited Chasing Amy and writes a stellar review, along with tons of photos, observations, comedy, and insight. We’ve been running this site since “Amy” hit theaters, and we gotta say, this is a very in-depth interesting piece on the flick. The article may get a bit overly critical at points (seemingly fogetting the budget and crew this classic was made with), but is overall done with the love of a fan who has truly watched the movie very closely — Maybe even more than we have. Nah. Don’t miss your chance to check it out, the Criterion Contraption #74. Credit for the discovery goes to our scooper and Cinematical.

- Minor spoiler alert – Kevin’s hilarious animated cameo from the “Superman: Doomsday” DVD (in stores this week) is up at our new News Askew YouTube channel. Hopefully this one will last! If you plan to watch the full pic, you may wanna wait and enjoy the cameo as part of the picture, but we wanted to have this for the archives, anyway. Enjoy the inside-joke goodness.
- Crave online has a positive review of “Reaper”, calling it (once again) one to watch:
- “…There is a different rhythm here. There are no long monologues. It’s more the zingy rhythm of call and response. There aren’t Veronica Mars style references to pop culture, but comments do defy expectations and the timing is impeccable. The physical slapstick is expertly performed as well.”
We’re less than a week away from the national premiere now! - Ok, one more! Buzz Sugar puts “Reaper” in their Top 5 of the Fall’s new crop of programs:
- “Reaper,” a dude comedy from two women who earned their chops as writers on “Law & Order: SVU,” could become one of the CW’s first big breakout hits. Kevin Smith’s influence can be felt all over the pilot, which showcases leading man Bret Harrison and hilarious sidekick Tyler Labine as a couple of unlikely heroes who work as bounty hunters for the devil. It’s an unlikely premise, but it’s got smart execution and humor to spare. But maybe the greatest thing about “Reaper” is the casting of Ray Wise as Satan himself; one look at that creepy smile, and I was sold.
- Anyone think that kid in “Mallrats” was an early adopter of Crocs?
- And finally this update, if you’re buying or renting, don’t miss the absolutely AWESOME “Death Proof” extended cut now out on DVD. Kevin and Scott sang the praises of “Grindhouse” in an early SModcast, and we couldn’t agree more. Sadly, no other hidden extras which we bet they’re saving for a “Special Edition” of Grindhouse sometime next year once sales on the single packs have slowed up. “Planet Terror” hits next month in its own disc, which we’re betting will also be missing the trailers. The additional stuff in “Death Proof” is fantastic, adding more detail to another unique masterpiece from the great Tarantino.

- A new blog from Kevin hit the web today which comprises of a fairly “boring” week by Kevin’s standards — Lots of movie watching, sure, but also an interesting exchange regarding his run-in with a snooty hostess at a Las Vegas restaurant. As part of the Monday goodness, the boys are amazingly keeping up with their schedule, delivering yet another BRAND NEW SModcast, which is very Harry Potter-centric. SMod’s now at episode #29, and still the coolest podcast on the planet.
- Congrats to “My Name Is Earl”‘s Jaime Pressly, who took home the Best Supporting Actress Emmy last night — Sadly, no awards for Lee or Suplee just yet, though the show continues to be one of the funniest sitcoms on TV. We’re anxiously awaiting the start of season 3 — Thursday, September 27th on NBC (next week!). We’ll see ya next time.

- Is Kevin’s role still solid for the new cut of “Southland Tales”? You betcha, at least according to the final poster art from Cinematical which includes Mr. Smith’s name in the credits. Richard Kelley has put a TON of work in this film to get it just right, and we’re very anxious to see the final results of his new cut. The film is currently set to hit theaters on November 9th, just a couple short months away.
- TheEagle.com runs an article on why people should listen to DVD commentary tracks, and lists Kevin as the “master” (and rightfully so):
-
The master of the funny commentary track, though, is director Kevin Smith. Smith knows no boundaries and will often reveal candid stories about the making of his films. His tracks go into information such as which crew members Jason Mewes slept with on the set of Clerks II, what actors from Mallrats Smith will never work with again and the innermost details of Smith’s sex life. Smith has even made a few commentary tracks for films that he has nothing to do with, such as Donnie Darko and Road House. Fans of Smith’s raunchy and gossipy style should also check out the Evening with Kevin Smith DVD series. These two DVDs each feature several hours of Smith’s famously hilarious Q&A sessions.
- It wouldn’t be NewsBites without a YouTube video now, would it? Some fans are trying to get Kevin’s notice with a Bluntman-themed trailer they put together. For an amateur job, it’s not bad, with some actual CGI effects and everything. The two minute segment, titled “Bluntman Beyond” is available at YouTube. For details from its creators, visit their site. Good one, guys. We’ll be back! Server work continues, so we do apologize for any slowness or errors you might see. We’ll let ya know.
