“Zack And Miri Make A Porno” – Now Shooting!
- For the first time in almost two and a half years, we can now proudly say this – Principal photography is now underway on a new Kevin Smith film! “Zack and Miri Make A Porno” is now filming in and around Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Shooting with the leads, Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks, should encompass the bulk of the shoot. We’re betting that the film’s supporting cast, announced earlier this week, will arrive to shoot only their scenes as needed (meaning a fairly scattered shoot). This is all speculation, however, given our previous experience on View Askew sets, Kevin and Scott tend to shoot as efficient as possible for both the sets and the actors.
Many folks are asking us about the extras casting — We have a bit more information on that just ahead, however, no idea at this point on WHEN extras will be called in for the shoot. Quite often, extras are used in outdoor shoots, which may give some local Pittsburgh residents the chance to go and watch some filming. At this point, no word on where things will be happening, though typically this is to keep crowds away. If you see anything, however, we’d love to hear from you. If you’re lucky enough to happen upon the set, just remember that crews are normally accomodating to onlookers, so long as you keep quiet and obey the rules. We’re looking forward to making our own set visit to Pittsburgh at some time during the shoot as well. While we’ll likely keep the spoilage to a minimum (always been our policy), we look forward to bringing you a report as one of the few web journalists lucky enough to be involved in the production. Stick with us for all your latest news, as shooting on the film continues. By the end of this week, we’ll have all your “Zack and Miri” news organized for you in one easy place.
Some “Extra” Details From Pittsburgh-Tribune…
- When Kevin asked for extras submissions, we didn’t get a very specific demographic. While we’re guessing he’ll take all shapes, ages, and sizes for SOME scenes, this new article from a Pittsburgh paper reveals a key group that they’re looking for – Male teens aged around 15 or 16. In addition, men and women aged 25 to 29 are cited as another key group. If you fit the bill, and have yet to submit your credentials, read on — You may still have a chance to appear in the next View Askew production — We can speak from experience when we say there’s nothing like the experience of a day on set, and seeing yourself up there even for a few seconds:
- Kevin Smith, director of ‘Clerks,’ seeking local teen boys for upcoming movie
Calling all teenage boys: Kevin Smith, director of “Chasing Amy” and “Clerks,” is looking for teens age 15 to 16 to fill speaking roles in his movie “Zack and Miri Make a Porno,” which starts filming Wednesday in Pittsburgh. Candidates should have acting experience.
Nancy Mosser, who has been hired to cast the film, is also looking for extras 18 and older, especially men and women age 25 to 29.
No experience is necessary to be an extra. Candidates can sign up online or by phone at 412-434-1666.
If anyone gets the call to come in, let us know! Details will of course be kept confidential.

- Entertainment Weekly lists “Clerks” as one of the “Most 11 Influential Sundance Flicks”:
CLERKS (1994)Kevin Smith, inspired by Stranger Than Paradise, turned his camera on his own nothing-much-happens life, shooting at night on a budget of $28,000 in the same convenience store he worked in by day. Clerks reflected the stifled suburban lives of a generation spoon-fed on pop culture and stalled out in go-nowhere McJobs. In other words, Smith tapped into a lucrative base of indie film’s most passionate ticket buyers: guys just like himself.
- The widely read Comingsoon.net picked up the “Zack and Miri Make a Porno” cast release story from this week — No new news, just good to see such major web media outlets picking up the coverage.

Shall we play a game?
Since the announcement of the supporting cast in the trades won’t be ’til probably Wednesday, and people wanna know now, I figured I’d give ya’ll something to discuss ’til then.
Here’s a glimpse of the supporting cast…
Gaze into the eyes in the photos above, and feel free to post your guesses in our comments area, share over at Kevin’s official forum, or send ’em on in to us! We’ll have the full cast right here as soon as it’s announced.
UPDATE: Scooper “Matthew” puts together a nice ensemble for us with his guesses. While we’re agreeing whole-heartedly on #1, #2, #4 and #5, the mystery pics have everyone, including us stumped (#3 and #6).
Our scooper gives his guesses here and you CAN certainly see the eye shape similarity with Lords, though we think Ryan’s a long shot (but not impossible). Find out later tonight or early tomorrow.

- Maxim Magazine runs a monthly feature where they list cool stuff happening in the next 3, 6, and 9 months. While a release date has yet to be set, they’ve got “Zack and Miri Make a Porno” in their items to watch for in 9 months column. That puts us around a late Fall release, which is what we’re speculating anyway. Good on ya, Maxim, for seeing a good thing coming and letting your readers know about it. Check out the scan above or check your February issue for the “Get Psyched For” section.
- And more today about…what else…Zack & Miri! Video ETA lists the film as one of their “Best Movies of 2008 That You Don’t Know About Yet” (despite the fact we’ve known about this one for quite a while now, natch):
Zack & Miri Make a Porno
This movie actually begins filming on Wednesday, so how can we already put it on our sleeper list? Well, look at that title. Oh yeah, it also stars Golden Boy Seth Rogen and is the next movie from cult filmmaker Kevin Smith. Smith is known these days to cut his movies together while filming, so the film should be ready to come out by fourth quarter. The success or failure of The Pineapple Express will dictate whether they push it out this year to strike while the proverbial iron is hot or delay it until enough time has passed. October.
Labine Joins “Porno” Cast…
- Breaking news just in! The hilarious Tyler Labine, who steals scenes on the CW’s “Reaper”, confirms via a posting on the Reaper Facebook page today, he’s been offered and accepted a role in “Zack & Miri Make a Porno”. Labine shoots in February. This hot on the heels of the news from Kevin that tells us there will be SIX new actors and actresses revealed in the trades tomorrow or Tuesday. We’re guessing that Labine’s one of them. We’ll of course have the latest casting news right here, as soon as it breaks.
With Labine already joining the two stellar leads, the film’s already shaping up to be one of the best comedic cast that Kevin’s ever put together. We can’t wait for the rest.

- JoBlo also reports that striking WGA writers will be allowed to work for the Weinstein Company’s films due to a recently struck deal. Good deal for them, for certain — While the film industry hasn’t quite yet felt the sting of the strike, it will be in the near future.
- In other JoBlo news, Episode #142 of their “The Bottom Shelf” column, dedicated to DVDs you may have missed, cites both “Vulgar” and “Now You Know” as two discs worth checking out.
- We’re told that you’ll find a Mallrats poster in the background of Episode #42 of Black 20’s “net_work” web program. The episode is titled “Rockin’ Eve” — The show’s pretty amusing, to boot. Each segment runs just 5 minutes and makes for a quick dose of the funny when ya need it.
