A Fan Speaks About The Con…

  • Our scooper wrote us with some of his thoughts on his ComiCon experience from Sunday, and we thought them pretty interesting, so here they be:
Funniest moment: Seeing that action figure of Walt’s dog.

Moment of Irony: Seeing Kevin’s booth right next to a booth of 40-something ex-centerfolds posing like they were 18.

Angriest moment: Restraining myself from bitchslapping some guy in front of me whining because he was supposed to interview Kevin. Apparently he was/is the Marvel rep. for the Stash.

“Tell ’em Steve-Dave” moment: When Bob Schreck sticks up for the fans, tells the Marvel rep tough shit and call his bluff on the importance of the interview. Bob told him he would go over and talk to Diamond if it was okay to pass on the interview and did he really want him to do that. Kevin was there to sign autographs, not do an interview. Basically Bob said “look quit whining because Diamond understands and you’re just pissed because now you have to wait like everyone else.”

Curious Party Moment: Brian Quinn explaining to a fan they sent someone to get Mewes because he might have be passed out from drinking the night before and slept in. Mewes never did show.

Happiest Moment: Meeting Kevin & Scott (Duh) and seeing what nice guys they are in person. They love their fans, and that will make them legends.

Newsweek & Kevin…

  • Kevin came up in a couple spots in the latest Newsweek…Nothing much new here, but since it’s a widely read mag we certainly thought it deserved a mention. Here ya go:
      Kevin Smith, the 27-year-old director of “Clerks” and “Chasing Amy”, is one young filmmaker who seems to have staying power. For him, the key to being young in Hollywood is figuring out how to maintain your indie credibility while courting mainstream success. “Writing a couple of drafts for Warner Brothers’ new ‘Superman’ was a blast,” says Smith with a laugh. “Then Tim Burton got on and they got rid of me. But I did my big-movie thing and got paid boatloads of cash. That’s sweet.” That cash is letting him make his next indie, called “Dogma”. (Another way he keeps himself from going Hollywood: he still lives in New Jersey.)

      … But because of the direction the industry is going, more of these Hollywood wanna-bes will likely get the chance. And they _are_ having a good time. “Ours is the generation who says, ‘I never want a job I loathe’,” says Kevin Smith. “Making movies has less to do with the need to succeed than the fear of being trapped [in a dead-end job]. We have the folly of our youth on our side. If we f–k it up, we can make up for it later. Something will pan out. There’s always comic books.”

    Yeah! Let “Dogma” soak up that press! And over 6 months before its release! Gotta love it.

    • Sure, Kevin’s got “Dogma”, the rumored Clerks sequel, and the Fletch 3 script to tend to…But what difference would adding another project mean? This one comes from Cinescape‘s Daily Rumors section:
    Smith To Film ‘Daredevil’ Movie?

    The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, fresh from reporting the latest on Kevin Smith’s currently-filming religious action-comedy Dogma, speculates that the writer-director may try to bring the super-hero Daredevil to the big screen after he completes his stint writing for the comic-book series. Sounds great, unless Warner Bros. is involved (we don’t want you wasting your creative talents on a boffo script only to have the director toss it in the can). Better yet, Kevin, how about writing AND directing this super-hero yarn?

    By the way, Kevin alluded to the fact that he wouldn’t mind doing a big superhero-type script with another director, and that he and Robert Rodriguez had discussed it. Could this be the one?

    • The strangely named Suck.Com website had a little blurb about Superman Lives and how it was destined to fail ever since “Garden State auteur Kevin Smith’s script got the axe.” If you’re interested in reading the whole article, it’s HERE , but what we mentioned pretty much sums it up.
    • In anticipation of the previously mentioned West Coast screening of Clerks, Matt’s set up a website called West Coast Askew that’s dedicated to getting folks together for the big event. It includes a message board, sign-in, and lots more. If you’re into View Askew events and on the west coast, you’ll probably want to stop by.
