IU And Kent State Appearance Updates…
- It’s going to be Kevin Smith weekend at IU in a couple of weeks. Union Board Films, the same group sponsoring Kevin’s Q&A session, is screening Clerks in the Whittenberger auditorium from Thursday October 25th, thru Saturday October 27th. Admission is free for IU students with a valid ID, and is $2 for anyone who isn’t a student. The film will be shown at 8pm and 11pm each night. Details HERE.

- According to a recent “Association for Student Activity Programming” newsletter, Jason Mewes is scheudled to appear for a live Q&A session at Colorado State on November the 8th. This will follow a screening of Dogma. We are unable to confirm at this point, but will post more information as soon as possible.
- Free tix to Jay & Bob in Australia: The new issue of Otico (the preeminent Monash University student magazine) features a competition to win tickets to a preview screening of J&SBSB at Hoyt’s Chadstone on November 7 at 6:30pm. Melbournians who can send in a picture of themselves dressed as Jay or Silent Bob (and who are able to pick up the tickets from the Otico office at Monash University — Caulfield campus) could win a double pass. Indiana University Appearance Details!
- Kevin’s college appearance tour continues with his upcoming appearance at the Indiana University Auditorium, where he will give a “brief speech followed by an extended Q&A session” at 8:00 PM on October the 26th. Kevin usually just walks right out and starts with the Q&A, so if you’re going, that’s what to expect.
Tickets are available starting THIS Monday morning (October 15th) at 10:00 AM, only to students with a valid student ID at the IU Activities Desk. They are FREE! After students have had their shot at the tickets, the remaining seats will be sold to the general public on a yet to be determined date. We know this is bad news for those of you in the area who wanted to attend, but it does seem to be a fair way of doing things. Students should get first shot. We’ll do our best to get the news of public tickets up here ASAP, so if you’re not a student and you want to go, keep watching this site. By the way, students – You need to bring ONE ID for EACH ticket. You can’t buy multiple or even a simple pair of tix on your ID.

Kevin Smith’s latest film has taken over from Lagaan: Once Upon A Time In India.
The four hour Bollywood epic has dropped out of the top ten completely.
Korean film Shiri is now in second place, followed by Atlantis, Emil And The Detectives and Amelie.
The Leeds Film Festival continues until October 12.

- According to their site http://www.megaconvention.com, the Guest of Honor for MegaCon 2002 in Orlando, Florida from February 22-24, 2002 is supposed to be Kevin Smith! We’ll look into this one and keep ya posted, but it looks good.
- Writer Brian Michael Bendis touches on the Blutnman & Chronic delays in this month’s Powers, the book That Michael Avon Oeming does with Bendis:
We certainly apologize for the delays in getting you the last couple issues. Mike took the very cool gig of drawing the BLUNTMAN AND CHRONIC graphic novel…and it looks great. But when Kevin got off-shcedule with the book’s script – which was totally understandable with movie and its promotion and such – it started a chain reaction that knocked us off-schedule a little as well. Simply put, it’s Kevin Smith’s fault. 🙂 You know you’re a big player when you affect books you have nothing to do with.”
So, there ya have it. The book will still come out, but it’s just a bit delayed due to some busy schedules. We’ll keep ya posted and hopefully have a release date on that soon.
- Florida International University is showing “Chasing Amy” as part of their “Controversial Movies” this Thursday, Oct. 11, at 8:00pm in GC 210. It’s free!
- In other screening news, there’s a double feature of Clerks and Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back in Vancouver, BC, Canada on Wednesday, October 17th and Thursday, October 18th at the Ridge Theatre (3131 Arbutus St.). Shows start at 7:30 PM both nights. There’s also a bonus show of J&SBSB on Fri. Oct. 19 @ 7pm. Tix for the double feature are only 5 bucks Canadian, a real bargain!
- Shannon Elizabeth is scheduled to appear onstage at the Los Angeles Comic Book and Science Fiction Convention on Sunday, October 21, at 11am, along with her Thirteen Ghosts co-stars Matthew Lillard and Rah Digga. House on Haunted Hill was a fun flick, hopefully Ghosts will be decent.

Official ‘Vanilla Sky’ Trailer Online!
- Vanilla Sky’s official trailer has surfaced, after AICN broke the news of the capture, Cinemovies has now posted the official Quicktime version. Askew favorite Jason Lee plays a part in this one, and shows up in the trailer, as the best friend of Tom Cruise’s character. The trailer’s quite cool, though it looks like about 95% the same as the Spanish Open Your Eyes that it’s remaking (some shots even look identical). It does seem like Cameron Crowe has chosen some interesting music for the film (at least, the trailer) and is carefully keeping scenes of Cruise’s character looking a certain way out of the trailer (to say more would spoil things). At any rate, you might want to check out the original film in the meantime, it’ll give you a good idea of what to expect and also how large of a part Lee will have in this one. The Word On “Starwoids” & Kevin’s Involvment…
- For those of you still wondering about the extent of Kevin’s involvement with next week’s release of “Starwoids” on DVD, this open letter came to us from Jonah Loeb, president of IndieDVD (yep, the same company working on releasing View Askew production Drawing Flies to disc this year):
I have been extremely impressed with the level of commitment that news askew and their readers share for the works and passions of Kevin Smith. I am constantly in awe of the lightning fast information streams that News Askew is able to gather information with. I’m writing specifically to set the record straight about a movie that my company IndieDVD is releasing titled Starwoids that I understand has been discussed for a while on News Askew.
Chris Gore of Film Threat and I had been discussing bringing Film Threat Video back to life. The first project that he had wanted to do was to release a film that he described as the best film he had seen about Star Wars fans and the micro-governments that formed out of the line-up for the Phantom Menace. I saw the film and was really impressed with the fact that by the end, you actually care about these guys doing their wacky fan stuff and feel like you know them. Chris, the filmmaker and I discussed who a quote should come from. The logical conclusion was KEVIN SMITH. Since I represented the one-degree of separation to him because of Drawing Flies (we’re working on it, I swear), I was the one who had to ask. As I braced myself to take the plunge and ask the favor we decided to shoot the moon and ask if he would also record the introductory narration for the film and be interviewed about Star Wars. He agreed (without a bribe or anything, providing we send a copy of the film to him first) and we recorded the six lines of introductory narration (with his own spin), and interviewed him about Star Wars all in his hotel room during the San Diego Comic-con. The whole makeshift recording session lasted for a few hours and we let them get back to normalcy. I can’t begin to tell you how thankful we were and continue to be, I’m glad that he not only shot into independent film fame but that he continues to reach out to fellow struggling artists and lend what he can. To date there still isn’t a patron saint for independent film…you never know.
Kevin’s contributions add the perfect touch to the film. Brandon, the DVD author, tells me that the interview is “incredible” in his opinion, and that he would feel like the film is worth seeing for the interview alone. We are releasing the film on October 16, at the same time that Phantom Menace is released on DVD, (this is either really wise or really foolish because Starwoids may be eclipsed by Star Wars itself, depending on how many pennies have been saved up by the fans). I assume that some of you will see the film, so I hope that you enjoy the film as much as we have and I look forward to hearing what you have to say about it.

- Until October 5th, J&SBSB is showing at the Rio Film Festival. Shows are continuing to sell out and play well, with applause throughout. One local newspaper, “Globo”, called Jay and Silent Bob the “Abbott and Costello of the 90’s” and gave the flick 4 out of 5 stars. The movie has been purchased by a local distributor for release there.
- We’re hearing that Amazon is writing some of you to cancel your pre-orders of the “Bluntman & Chronic” book. They’re claiming this:
