  • An interesting scan today from Autograph Collector magazine, which summarizes the scene outside of the Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back premiere in Los Angeles which we attended back in August. The magazine focuses on who was and wasn’t signing autographs outside the theater. In summary, both Kevin and Jay were happy to sign, along with Mark Hamill, yet NONE of the American Pie cast members obliged fans. Take THAT!
  • Congratulations to J&SBSB composer Jim Venable, who just won an Annie Award for Outstanding Individual Acheivement for Music for an Animated Series – The Powerpuff Girls. Way to go, Jim!
  • An interview with Kevin has been posted on UK’s Appolo Cinema’s website to promote J&SBS’s release.
  • Finally today, a couple screenings – Clerks will be shown at the University of Delaware in Trabant Theater on Wednesday, November 14th at 7:30 PM. Tickets are $1 with student ID. The film will also be screened at UC Davis Campus Cinema on Saturday, November 17th at 8:00 PM and 10:00 PM. The location is Chem 194, admission is $3. Their campus cinema site is located HERE.

Commentary & Stuff…

November 12th @ 5:35 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Hi there folks, we’re back again after the busy weekend – No day off due to the Veterans Day holiday here! Sounds like a lot of you spent your Saturday dialing the View Askew offices, as day two of those Vulgarthon tickets sold out just about as fast as day one. Wow. Certainly a TON of demand for these events. We’ll be gearing up coverage for those events in the coming weeks, and hope to run a few events of our own as we lead into the big show. News on other stuff has been coming in much smaller doses, with the bulk of it focusing on Jay & Bob’s overseas release, especially in the UK. Look for more news on that below.

A couple of unrelated requests – First of all, I’m thinking of switching from a DSL to a cable line here for internet access, but I’m concerned about losing newsgroups. If anyone here has access to one of those top secret, fast and FREE binary news servers, drop me a line. I know there’s some you can pay for as well but if I have to do that, I’ll likely stick with the slower DSL line.

And finally, if the guy I talked to a while back who works for the Hoyts theaters is reading this, drop me a line. Alright, let’s see what’s going on today:

  • We have just received a report that Kevin has added an appearance scheduled for Tuesday, November 27th, at Syracuse University. We are working to confirm this and find more details as we speak. Watch for more news on that soon.

  • More UK press! These scans come from Empire Magazine’s December issue. The magazine gives the flick a mixed, mostly positive review, and ran a huge multi-page piece on the film itself. Way too much to key in here, but we’ve got the scans, so be sure and click them if you’d like to read the article and check out the layout, sidebars, etc. Enjoy.
  • The latest Previews includes that new C.L.I.T. shirt and some other new items from View Askew and Graphitti:
  • The “Cathlolicism Wow” White T-shirt
  • A “Sunday Yeah” black T-shirt
  • A special issue called “Wizard Edge”, which will feature Jay & Bob on the cover

We’ll snag some photo scans of this stuff for you ASAP.

  • Jay & Silent Bob has been officially pushed back to a March 2002 release in New Zealand. The flick had been set for release this Friday. This mirrors the unfortunate Australia delays.
  • And finally today, we’ve been receiving many reports of the View Askew spottings in “Shallow Hal”, which hit theaters this weekend. During the closing credits, there’s a shot of a dude with REALLY big hair wearing a View Askew t-shirt. Jack Black’s character also refers to a couple of characters in the film as “Mallrats”.

Vulgarthon Day 2 Sells Out in 3 Hours…

November 11th @ 10:23 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Kevin Smith

  • It’s been a busy weekend, so there hasn’t been a lot of time to drop in here with an update, but we assume that those of you who knew about the event tried to get tickets, and hope that most of you got in. That’s right, the 2nd day of Vulgarthon sold out handily, in just a slight bit longer time period than the first. Congrats to all that got tickets, and we hope everyone’s got their rooms lined up and plans for a fantastic time. We’re going to be on hand for just the first day’s events, but look forward to seeing you there, at the inevitable hotel party, and the bowling post party. Here’s Kevin’s message announcing the sellout, and an exciting hint of what’s to come at the events:
Cease your incessant dialing. All tickets are now accounted for.

It’s gonna be a helluva pair of days. Wait ’til you see what we’ve got planned…

If you are interested in trading your tix or selling them, for example, so you can share a day with a bunch of your friends, be sure and read this VERY IMPORTANT POST from Vincent. He’ll tell ya how to get it done.

Villanova Ticket Information!

November 11th @ 10:23 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Gregory Tryson

  • A Villanova student managed to get to us with this information on Kevin’s upcoming appearance at Villanova University in Pennsylvania, which we believe to be his last Q&A of the year. We also hope to attend this show as well. If you’d like to attend, here’s some details, though it looks like (so far) the event is reserved for students only, unless you can pull some strings with the ticket folks:
Tickets go on sale on November 12th (for students only, as far as I know), and cost $12 a piece. Other pieces of news: The show was originally planned to take place in the Villanova Room (a convention- style room), but will likely be moved to The Pavilion, the college’s indoor stadium, which holds about 2500 people for events like this.

Also of note: this is still tentative, but the college is planning to screen Kevin’s movies during the week before he comes (all except for “Dogma”, of course – the priests that run the school wouldn’t look too kindly on it, unfortunately.) 🙂

The info comes from the school newspaper (http://www.villanovan.com), and from the Campus Activities Team that runs everything here. Hope the information’s helpful!

If those priests would object to Dogma, we’re wondering what they’ll do if they’re in attendance when Kevin speaks! Should be interesting…

  • This week, the Royal at 608 College in Toronto, Ontario, Canaca, will host a retrospective of Kevin’s flicks. The event happens from November 12th through the 15th, in which you can catch all 5 of his flicks up on the big screen. The first night features a double bill of Clerks and Chasing Amy. Don’t miss it!
  • Clerks: The Animated Series will air on Australian TV’s Comedy Channel (Cable Station) in December. They’re set to play all the episodes in the proper order (not as originally aired in the States when they started on ABC).The shows start on December 7th at 7 PM Eastern Australia Summer Time.
  • In other cartoon news: The final chapter to Brian Lynch’s “MONKEY MAN ON THE MOON” four-part cyber comic book series is up at the Angry Naked Pat website. You can read the whole story now, so be sure and stop it to check it out, it’s worth it! Look for the Monkeyman comic book to hit store shelves this Spring. You can say you were among the first to witness the character in all his glory.
  • And speaking of Australia, Kings Comics is having a premiere screening of J&SBSB on Wednesday the 21st of November at 7 PM in Sydney. You can prepurchase tix at all Kings Comics, Fox studio’s outlet. Prices are $12.50 for a regular pass, and $25.00 for a “La premiere ticket”, of which their are only 40 prime seats.
  • The new issue of IFCrant, the Independent Film Channel magazine, features a small article called ‘When Harry Met Indie’ detailing author Erika Youngs’ thoughts on Indie directors taking a shot at Harry Potter. Here’s the portion you might find enjoyable:
Kevin Smith returns with “Harry Potter in NJ’:

“Yo yo yo, muthaf——-!” “Convenience-cottage” clerk life in Red Hogs-Bank, New Jersey, is filled with the steady hum of microwaving Bertie Bott’s Every Flavor Bean Burritos and the continued pilfering of packs of Kools under the eye of surveillance owls. Harry and his pals Silent Ron and “Jay” Hermione Granger spend their days discussing the nastiest things one can do with a stick of Drooble’s Best Blowing Gum and a pumpkin pasty.

  • More UK Press: Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back was voted movie of the month by this month’s Maxim UK. The trailer for the flick can also be found on the CD inside UK Playstation 2 magazine PSW.
  • Matt Damon made a surprise guest appearance on SNL last night, in a sketch with host Gwyneth Paltrow.

Kevin @ Kent State: Summaries…

November 9th @ 3:01 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Nancy Jundi, Peter John Ross, Tim Continenza & Perry Onorio

  • We received a ton of summaries from Kevin’s appearance at Kent State last night, where he again wowed audiences with his entertaining stories, cell phone antics, and some other stuff that will probably never happen again. Sounds like a fun appearance, and, from what we heard, the audience had a fantastic time. Of course, all this stuff was filmed for the DVD, which is really shaping up to be top notch, so you’ll probably get a chance to catch it. Anyway, this summary just about covers all the big events from the evening, so check it out:
Wow, what a day…..

My friend Scott and I left Cleveland around 9am hoping to get to Kent early and beat any crowd that may have formed waiting for Kevin. I had heard stories about people at IU showing up at 6am with a TV and DVD player to keep them company on the long wait, so I decided to be the early bird at Kent.

When we arrived there was no one, and I mean not a soul had come early to line up, so Scott and I walked around enjoying the campus and grabbing a bite. Around 4pm we decided to go inside to the ballroom and see if there were any folks in line. Four people had shown up, so I quickly became 5th in line.

The event was thought unlikely to sell out so Kent was telling people who had called that day that they could buy tickets at the door. One young lady named Rose came up to the maybe 10 or so in the line who had gathered and asked if we had an extra ticket seeing as how the show had sold out. We didn’t so we gave here a piece of paper and she made a sign “37! KS tix please!” The poor gal finally got a ticket after numerous inquiries about whether or not her sign meant she was willing to suck 37 dicks for a ticket!

After 3 and a half hours of waiting in line with some of the funniest and hard core fans I have ever met we got in. Front row, 10 feet away from the podium…it was beautiful. I sat there with my Clerks comics, Chasing Dogma and my sign that read “Thanks for tonights Brain Discustion (in reference to that website) -OU1313- Kent also made the mistake of selling 1,400 tickets when the ballroom really only holds 1,200 so we had to wait while seating arrangements were made and everyone was settled, but at 8:10 we all realized how worth the wait it all was. Kevin took the stage with an enormous roar from the crowd, making a few jokes about Kents history and the fact that we were there to watch him of all people while the President was speaking to the nation. Then he told us since this visit was being taped for the DVD, they needed to do some odd stuff, like filming his departure first. We all played along as we watched him walk off stage and the cameras rolled past our faces.

He came back out and said, this is for you folks, I’m not here to lecture because I really don’t know how so let’s start with the questions. I was the first one up to the mic and asked about the line in the Dogma script about where God is initially supposed to answer Bethany’s question of “why are we all here” with the statement of plastics. I understood that this was a nod to the Graduate, but George Carlin also has a standup routine wherein he uses the same line coming from God. So I asked if he knew this when he wrote it. It was quite the witty banter getting that question out seeing as how both Kevin and I were interrupting each other, but it was hilarious to all and then he told the story of how he learned of Carlin’s routine afterwards and was a bit uncomortable when he saw it after casting him and had to answer the same question when Carlin himself had asked.

The night contained many of the same stories a lot of us had all heard before on this board, but it didn’t matter, because we were hearing them come out of Kevin’s mouth, live and in the flesh. The infamous Prince story was indeed long, yet completely worth it….I will never look at Prince the same way again, not that many of us didn’t already see him in a strange light, but seriously, “Prince lives in Prince world where the idea of the word no to one of his requests is unfathomable.”

The absolute highlight of the night is when a cast member from Clerks showed up. The guy who says “Whadda ya mean theres no ice! You mean I gotta drink this coffee hot!” Kevin’s face lit up and was in such a suprised state as was the rest of the crowd. It was touching to see such a commradary after all of these years between the two men as Kevin asked how he had wound up in Ohio and then received praise from the man “you said you were going to make something of this and look at you now.”

Maybe an hour into the show we hear screams coming from outside as 5 fans were begging to come in. Kevin starts shouting back to them “are you okay?” They yell back that their buddy deserted them with their tickets and couldn’t get in. Kevin asked the KSU people if they could come in if they had tickets so some of the crowd members walked up and gave Kevin their extra tickets and the fans outside were let in. For retribution they were made to climb up on stage and dance to Jungle Love in place of Kevin who declined to do so. (He said it would make him to much like our little monkey boy “Dance monkey man! Dance!” came from the crowd!)

Mid show, guess who calls, yes many of us were expecting it, Mr. Mewes himself! Kevin kept trying to tell Jay the name of the school but he just didn’t get it, I am assuming he was calling it something that sounds like Kent instead (Cunt State!) He held the mic up to the phone and we hear the man himself. Afterwards he calls Jason Lee and he tells us about the film he is working on now (Vanilla Sky).

Next came the most beautiful moment of the night for me…Kevins cell phone died! He was talking about Scott Mosier’s recent investment in a macked out fully loaded VW van to drive around the country in and decides to call him and have him describe it to the crowd, but his battery is dead. So who’s phone does he use? Oh ya, mine! I was totally flabbergasted, Kevin was using my phone and talking to Scott fucking Mosier on it! Nice, just damned nice!

The night was wrapping up and the oddities came out, Kevin received a video homage to himself, a CD of some local band, a coconut to give to Mewes (yipes, just fucking yipes) and a marriage proposal for Silent Bob, not Kevin, but Silent Bob in which the woman goes off on a tangent about her ex husband who bought a $200 yo-yo which lead to their divorce! Kevin responds “mam, Silent Bob is a fictional character, fictional…” and then he refers back to the tattoo on his arm which says “Jenny’s” stating that is the one and only wife he will ever have. Then she proceeds to beg for sex from the crowd! SCARY!

Kevin made it very clear that he was there to talk and not sign autographs, because answering Q’s was much more personal in his book. So thats what he did, he answered questions like a champ until 1:15 am, again having to be practically dragged off stage. As soon as he said good night there was a mad rush to the stage for his autograph and pictures. Kevin was so right, after that 5 hour Q & A you really do feel like you have just sat down and had a one on one conversation with him. He his so devoted to his fans and really does do everything in his power to please the masses. He even gave a hug to an audience member who looked like he was next to tears when describing what Chasing Amy had meant to him. I swear, he is a quality, quality man and I won’t soon forget this stellar “Evening with Kevin Smith.”

Mewes At Colorado State – Summary…

November 9th @ 3:00 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Ryan Wheaton

  • And it sounds like Kev’s not the only one who can wow a crowd – Jason Mewes was also on the appearance circuit last night, with a Dogma screening and a Q&A session. Here’s one fan’s report, which reveals that Jay will be appearing in JERSEY GIRL…It also sounds like the commentary for the Jay & Bob DVD is coming up soon, a good sign. Here’s that scooper’s report:
Just got back from the Mewes event at Colorado State University. Gotta’ say, he was great. The crowd was very uneducated by View Askew standards, but Mewes was worth the ticket price. We were backstage, and he sat down on a couch with my girlfriend and myself for the first 30 minutes of Dogma (before he was wisked away to do promos and shit). Here’s everything I got:

He says Pot luck (high times movie) is good; he’s in about 4 scenes. R.S.V.P. (or Sticks and Stones) he is very pleased with. He said it’s a darker movie, and something more like he would like to try more of in future. He hasn’t seen it, and has only seen a couple dailies. You’ll never wieze in this town again (Pauly Shore), he said his part is small, but good. He also said Pauly is still real fucking funny, and can still pull in the bitches.

JERSEY GIRL, nothing new. He’s going back to read the script when he does the commentary for J&SBSB. He said, again, that Kevin wrote him a part…..but not as JAY. Also, he doesn’t know about the roster for J&SBSB commentary, but he is pretty sure that the edition coming out in Febuary will be the final one (no 2 year wait like Dogma, he said).

He also said that Jason Lee just got a divorce. He said he was surprised, but he ran into wife Carmen a while back and she told him personally (not sure if you knew that–I didn’t). He answered about 30 minutes of stupid questions. Most were drug orientated, NONE of those did he answer. Also, he went off a little bit (very tastefully) on some dude that said he sold out on the MTV commercial. He responded with, “what’s selling out? I don’t understand. $30,000 for two days work is all I know.” CLASSIC. He tried to call Kevin on stage, but couldn’t get reception on his phone in the building.

Overall, great deal. He was very personable, and a great guy to talk with. One more thing….fuck stars with egos. I’ve met other dudes, and this guy is for real. Not only did he entertain my questions for half an hour, but he was engaging in response. A true give and take meeting. Plus, when he first came into the room everyone clammered all over him-introducing themselves. As he made his way over to where we were sitting HE actually introduced HIMSELF TO ME! As if I was their to see someone else.

  • Man, is this ever a cool find! The Internet “Wayback Machine”. Those of you who have been on the net for a few years probably have seen your favorite sites go through a ton of changes. This site is no exception, as we’ve had our share of facelifts and stuff. The View Askew site’s gone through some changes too. This new tool actually has archived the Internet, and can take you back as far as 6 years on some web pages! Amazing stuff really. Want to give it atry? Click HERE for the News Askew archive or HERE for View Askew’s. Simply adjust the URL with your favorite sites to try your own. Incredible! It’s a real blast from the past to see what View Askew and News Askew were up to back in 1997 and 1998.

  • Will Kevin appear with Jay at the University of Wyoming? We haven’t heard anything about this, except a few reports that their school newspaper is announcing a show on the 1st of December. If anyone can confirm or deny this, please drop us a line.
  • Last night’s episode of “Just Shoot Me” was titled “Finch Chasing Amy”.
  • The press in Israel continues – An Israeli site called “Walla” (www.walla.co.il) is holding a poll, again in Hebrew, stating “Jay And Silent Bob Are Back! What Is Kevin Smith’s Best Movie?”.
  • Mallrats is set to be released on Universal DVD in Australia on January 9, 2002. No features have yet been announced, but hopefully it’ll be better than than bare bones Clerks DVD currently on shelves.
