  • San Diego Con Panel Update! We’ve just received word from the Spike TV people that Thursday’s panel, ‘Scream’ Like a Girl, is now confirmed for 4:45 p.m. to 5:45. They’re moving to a bigger room as they’re expecting quite a crowd for this one. As always, when you get to the Con in a couple weeks, double check the time and place of where you want to go, as there are sometimes last-minute moves. Man, do we need to get to San Diego’s Con one of these years.
  • We’re told that Clerks II Mooby box is indeed popping up at a few other Best Buy locations in the country — So look around, as $12.99 for that collector’s item is a steal — A great item for Kevin and crew to sign, and also something (as far as we know, at least) that remains a Best Buy exclusive, so you can’t get it anywhere else. Worth picking up even for those of you already with the disc. The website also has limited copies. My meal is upstairs in the shrink wrap, of course — Gotta keep it collectible!
  • And hey, while you’re online shopping, don’t forget to check out the latest Stash items, including that Monroeville Jersey that we’re hearing is selling as fast as they can be made, so BUY SOON – Don’t wait. Also, visit the sponsor that makes SModcast possible, ThinkGeek, a website which go much great stuff you’ll want one of everything — They’ve had items on our Christmas lists for years. Thanks, ThinkGeek!
  • The cast of “My Name Is Earl” participated on last night’s edition of “Celebrity Family Feud” — They did things a bit different for the show, though, actually staying IN CHARACTER unlike other celebs who have been, well, themselves. It of course made for some hilarious moments (particularly the introductions). Earl and friends faced some of Camden County’s most memorable, led by the great Tim Stack. Unfortunately, we didn’t see Lee and Ethan get a ton of lines or camera time, but that’s game shows for ya. Miss it? Watch it now for FREE on Hulu!

“SPACED” At Laser Blazer/Stash West – Smith, Wright, Pegg, Hynes! July 23rd!

July 4th @ 10:24 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • EDITORIAL UPDATE: We just confirmed that Laser Blazer has FULLY STOCKED UP with copies of Shawn of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, Hot Fuzz SE, and ALL of Kevin’s films on DVD for immediate purchase and signatures! The Stash is also TOTALLY stocked with the latest swag, including those awesome Monroeville jerseys and so much more. Meet some legends AND do some shopping, this is a perfect chance to stock up for you or your pals.

We’re such massive fans of the work of Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg, words cannot express how cool this upcoming event at Secret Stash West inside Lazer Blaser is — But we’ll try. “Spaced” was the first creative effort of stars and creators Jessica Hynes, Simon Pegg, and Edgar Wright — Wright and Pegg went on to create quite possibly the best horror comedy ever, and easily one of the best of this decade so far, “Shaun of the Dead” in 2004. In 2007, the duo returned for cop buddy comedy “Hot Fuzz”, once again twisting a new genre on its ear in a unique way. We recently LOVED the “Don’t” trailer that bridged the two “Grindhouse” flicks, which the guys also hand a hand in.

However, we owe it all to “Spaced”, which ran in the UK back in 1999 and 2001 for an all-too-short 14 episodes (the British know how to keep fans wanting more). The show was fanboy love personified in its characters, all memorable, making for a one-of-a-kind show that nothing has come close to touching since (an American remake was briefly thought of, but without the blessing of Wright, Pegg, or Hynes, put down). The show is one of our all-time favorites, and now, thankfully, coming to American DVD (previously only available on UK imports). “Spaced: The Complete Series” collects every single episode along with a boatload of extras, including commentary from our own Kevin Smith.

Sold yet? You gotta have the DVD, sure, but we’ll do ya one better – On Wedesnday, July 23rd, from 12:30 til 2:30, all 3 stars/creators, Hynes, Pegg, and Wright, will join Kevin live, in person, at Secret Stash West and Laser Blazer, the greatest DVD/Video and Comic Book shop in all the land. They’ll all be signing copies of the new DVD for the bargain price of $49.98 – $10 off retail! That gets you the DVD and all 4 signatures! It’s extremely rare that this group will sit together in a room for an event like this again, so we’re telling you know — Get to Laser Blazer, tell your boss you need the day off, whatever it takes. Don’t miss this event, and line up early! If you’re coming to town for ComiCon, this happens RIGHT BEFORE IT. Perfect timing.

Oh and by the way, want anything else signed? You can have up to 3 items signed, but that’s it — Gotta keep the line moving — So bring them along if ya like. But you MUST purchase the “Spaced” DVD to get into the event. PLEASE ARRIVE EARLY! We’re telling ya now. Full details on the disc:

Spaced DVD retail price $59.98. Laser Blazer in-store price $49.98.

      DVD features include:

      * Exclusive feature length documentary.
      * “Spaced Jam” music video by Osymyso.
      * Commentary with stars Simon Pegg, Jessica Hynes, Nick Frost, Mark Heap, Julia Deakin, Katy Carmichael, director Edgar Wright, producer Nira Park, Plus guests Kevin Smith, Quentin Tarantino, Matt Stone, Diablo Cody, Bill Hader, and Patton Oswalt!
      * Footage from the UK Spaced marathon’s Q & A session
      * Homage-O-Meter that tracks every pop culture reference!
      * Out-takes, raw footage, deleted scenes, and more!

Spaced revolves around two idle twentysomething flatmates – immature skateboarding would-be comic artist Tim (Simon Pegg), and moody, responsibility-shy Daisy (Jessica Stevenson), and their self-induced lack of success in employment, relationships and life in general. Together with their oddball assortment of friends and neighbors, Marsha, Brian, Mike and Twist, they exist in a world perched precariously on the edge of normality.

      * Spaced DVD must be purchased at Laser Blazer to participate in the signing.
      * The line may be capped at any time. PLEASE ARRIVE EARLY!!
      * No more than three items signed per customer.

For more details on “Spaced”, see “Spaced Invasion” or the IMDB.

Laser Blazer/Jay & Silent Bob’s Secret Stash are located at 10587 West Pico Blvd. in Los Angeles, CA 90064. Call (310) 475-4788 for details. There’s a limited amount of parking behind the store — Otherwise, you’re on your own. This is one of the coolest events we’ve ever seen, folks — You never know who might show up to meet these fantastic folks. Be there!

  • Via recent board posts, Kevin cites that there has been no movement forward, at present, on the special edition DVDs of Jersey Girl or Chasing Amy X. Of course, we’ll let you know if that changes. Projects rarely get left behind forever these days, so you can bet we’ll eventually get to see both, somehow. Patience.
  • The Mid-Ohio Con reports that Jason Mewes will be a guest this year. The show runs on October 4th and 5th in Columbus, Ohio. We’ll assume Mewes will be there for his usual autograph signing and meet and greet. If you’re in the area, this is a fantastic chance to meet a View Askew legend.
  • Our shot of Mr. O’Halloran comes to us courtesy of the great photographer Albert Ortega, who always seems to be everywhere the stars are. Brian was at Fangoria’s Weekend of Horrors in Los Angeles promoting his new horror comedy “Brutal Massacre”. You can catch Bri on the big screen in a very brief cameo in “The Happening”. Our scooper reports it’s a quick one: “You see his eyes is the mirror of a car, and a kind of quick shot of the lower half of his face. But he’s there!”
  • We’re not watching NBC’s “Celebrity Family Feud”, but from the ads, it looks like there’s at least one episode that’s a must-see: A commercial lists one of the upcoming teams as ‘Team Earl’, which consists Jason Lee and his “My Name is Earl” co-stars, all in character: Earl, Randy, Joy, Darnell, and Catalina. According to the website, they’ll take on Camden County. If the episodes roll out as listed, this puts this one as airing on July 8th, but we’ll post when we know for sure. What a fantastic way to get an “Earl” fix in the middle of summer! Bravo, NBC.

Carlin Tributes From HBO, NBC…

June 26th @ 9:00 pm | 1 Comment » | Scooped by Frank Kergil, Joshua Gilmore

  • For those of you with HBO at home, be sure to tune in tonight, as they’re continuing their 2 night marathon of George Carlin HBO specials on their HBO2 channel. 11 of his famous stand-up specials will air. On Friday night, HBO will show George’s final HBO special. You can’t miss with a Carlin special, and his were always major events when they premiered on the channel. Tune in for some of the best comedy ever recorded. If you’re on the east coast and reading this late, you’ll likely still find it on the west coast feed where available. We’ll keep our eye on HBO for future Carlin airings, as we don’t think this will be the last we see of these specials — Perhaps they’ll add them to the “On Demand” library for a while, as well.

On Saturday night, NBC will offer up their own tribute to the man, airing the classic first ever episode of Saturday Night Live — Yes, Geroge Carlin was the host. SNL normally does not run entire episodes from the archives like this on NBC, so it’s a rare treat and absolutely worth tuning in or setting the DVRs for. The premiere is a fun watch, whether you’ve seen it before or not.

  • Ed Power, New Jersey native and writer of the King Features Syndicate comic “My Cage”, is once again featuring his Kevin Smith alter-ego character “Kevin Sloth” for a mini-storyline, starting Thursday (the 29th). Get the comic in your local paper or online at the official site.

In the storyline, the comic’s lead character, Norman Platypus, again fails to meet his hero, Mr. Sloth. The Thursday and Saturday strip will both briefly feature the three-toed director. A little over a year ago, they ran a strip which mentioned Norm’s favorite film director ‘Kevin Sloth’ and mentioned a few of his movies (‘Clucks’ and ‘Chasing Ape-y’). Learn more about “My Cage” at their Myspace site or their blog. And watch for the new storyline this Thursday through Sunday! With permission, we’ll reprint some images here as well.

  • Jeopardy Askew alert! On last night’s episode of the insanely popular game show “Jeopardy!”, one of the answers on board was “Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes attempt to “strike back” in this 2001 movie.” The correct question was, of course, “What is Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back.” The reigning champ got the answer right, as well, so they’re a-ok in our book. Truly a worthy champion, and always great to see View Askew references on such a widely watched show. As always, if anyone for any reason has video they can send, we’d love to add it to the archives. The category, by the way? “Oh Jay”.
  • Kevin was scheduled to call into LA’s KROQ radio this morning on the “Kevin & Bean” show for “a lively discussion on Indiana Jones vs. Han Solo”. You can listen to the entire clip right HERE. Kevin appears about 9:50 into the clip.

  • Joblo reports that Kevin & family were among the first guests to enjoy the new Simpsons ride at Universal Studios — Man, are we ever jealous.
  • A Muppet site called “Tough Pigs” decided that it would be fun to mock-cast the upcoming Fraggle Rock film (from the Weinstein Company, no less) with real actos. The great Ethan Suplee makes the list as Junior Gorg.
  • Black20.com runs a mock trailer titled “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of Swing”. There’s a funny mock trailer at featuring the titular character swinging through the films, along with other clips from films, super-imposting a fedora onto characters — Silent Bob’s swing over Lafours as the Dork Knight appears at 0:33.

  • Stephen Silver, our friend who designed “Clerks: The Cartoon” and those sweet as hell Clerks InAction Figures that tower above me here at the news desk, will design the characters for an animated movie called “Cereal Heroes”, about crime-fighting cereal mascots. We love it already — Sounds like a must-watch, especially due to Silver’s unique drawing style.
  • More View Askew love from Yahoo Sports today, in fact, it’s from the same columnist who had all the nice stuff to say about the “Zack and Miri” hockey photo last week. This time, he references Dante and Randal in this article discussing the debut of iceless skating rinks in Japan :

“If you’re running around on the roof of the Quick Stop with Randal and Dante, it’s deck hockey or street hockey. So can it still be ice hockey if you’re wearing ice skates but there’s no, you know, ice?”

  • Film 411 writes up some nice praise for the “Clerks” sequel in their ramblings on some of the best follow-ups of all time.
  • Look for a “Clerks” reference from the bassist of metal band Red Chord in this interview — Look around 8 questions in.

Rejoice! Reaper Will Return!

  • The CW has officially announced that Reaper will indeed return next year. For a mid-season 13 episode run. While not as good as a full season, this allows the thrilling new mythlogy to continue on, as the show has begun to build its own world and continuity. This also opens the door to the chance of seeing Kevin back for another possible writing or directinggig with the show next season.

Congrats to all involved – We can’t wait for the adventures of Sam, Sock, the lovely Andi and that pesky Satan to continue. Reaper is currently finishing up its first season on the CW network.

  • First today, some eagle-eyed scoopers caught the above pictured reference to The Askewniverse in this week’s new episode when the guys pulled into an underground parking garage. And some online outlets are reporting that the CW is leaning towards renewing the show for a full second season! Check out the articles from The Hollywood Reporter and BuddyTV. The CW will be annoucing its full fall schedule on May 13th.

  • The dudes from Quick Stop Entertainment held a live panel discussion at the NY Comicon over the weekend, and our pal Robb was in attendance. Here’s a short report on what went down that may be of interest:

The panel started with a folksong version of “Baby Got Back”.

Announced the “Masters of SONG FU” music contest. Head to head contest. First challenge: 30-60 second sitcom theme song of your life. Entries open May 1 and close May 15th.

Short trailer for Bob and Doug McKenzies new animated show — Will air January 2009.

Showed the intro to the “Zack & Miri Make A Porno” webisodes titled ‘Money Shots’. No date other than “some point in the future” given for their web premiere.

  • More View Askew love from Empire Magazine in their June 2008 issue. In a feature on the Greatest Movie Studios, Miramax is in the spotlight this month, with Kevin featured throughout the article as well as Askewniverse regulars Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. “Clerks” is also charts at No. 7 in their Studio Top 10. Complete scan evidence is above.
  • Finally today, anyone catch “Navy Seals” on AMC this weekend? American Movie CLASSICS!?!? Gotta love it. See ya next time…
