  • After Kevin’s posting run yesterday, we suppose that Affleck felt he had to catch up. So, on his own WWWBoard over at Affleck.Com, he did just that. Surf over to read some of his replies, the most interesting of which, was the long one he gave detailing his thoughts on Pearl Harbor and more. Here’s a snippet:

Which brings me to…my next movie and it’s one I’m really thrilled about. In fact, I haven’t been this excited to do a movie in a long time and nobody is as suprised as I am at that. If you had asked me a year ago if I’d be doing Michael Bay’s next movie–and FOR NO MONEY at that–I’d have said you were crazy. And maybe I am, but I don’t think so.

When I got the script I was fully expecting the kind of saccharine, popcorn that was Armageddon. I was shocked, to say the least. Jerry and Michael are working from a script by Randall Wallace (Braveheart) that is uncompromising, true to the accounts of survivors and striving to be the definitive epic on the day that “lived in infamy” and ultimitely proved to be the definitive moment in the greatest conflict of the last century.

You can read the full post HERE, which goes into the future of “Bounce”, due out sometime this summer now.

  • Darth Dobbin, who created that infamous graphic, has set up a nifty little flash sight with some downloads that you may find of interest. Check it out HERE and remember, this is unofficial, folks. We’re just letting you know it’s out there.
  • There’s a new section on the Movie Scripts Online website where they rank flicks for the number of occurrences of that oft-heard F-word and, you guessed it, Dogma and Chasing Amy clocked in. The numbers? Dogma ranked 30th with 82 times, and Chasing Amy hit #40 with 59. Fun stuff. Who the heck takes the time to do this?
  • In IGN‘s Anti-Awards (their own Oscars), Dogma is up for “Best Comedy”. Cast your vote HERE.
  • Alanis Morissette, Dogma’s God, won a Juno (Canadian Grammy) for best album last evening.

  • IMPORTANT CORRECTION: We were misinformed by the Wondercon site folks that Kevin would be appearing this year. We have just learned that this is FALSE. Kevin will NOT appear at Wondercon. Sorry for any confusion, but, at any rate, at least the story was only up for a couple of hours. Sorry for any confusion that this error may have caused you. And now, back to our update, already in progress:

  • Weekends go by too fast anymore, don’t they? A 4 day work week would be much better…At any rate, there’s a few things to chat about today, though we will admit things have been generally slow for the past week, and we expect this to continue, aside from Kevin’s upcoming public appearances. We’ve got a summary of Kev’s fantastic Dennis Miller Live appearance for ya today, some information on the LA Con appearance that’s coming up, a wonderful amount of information from Kevin himself, and a new poll topic (suggested by James Healy) for ya. Let’s go:

Kev To Appear At LA ComicCon!

  • We’ve got the new flyers for the LA Con that Kev’s expected to appear at as a makeup for the one he missed last month. Rumor has it he’ll be sceening an entire episode of Clerks TCS, so be sure and get there! The fun happens at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel in Downtown L.A. on March 19th. Kev’s appearance is scheduled for 2 PM, but we say just spend the day there, ya never know where and when you might catch the guy. He normally does good and makes a day of it.

Q&A With Kevin Smith! TONS Of Info Here…

  • It’s been a LONG time since this happened…But Kev went on a posting rampage over at his View Askew WWWBoard yesterday, with a TON of responses to posts with questions, general comments, and lots more. Normally, we can bring Kev’s big news to ya here, but this was more just some random stuff about a ton of different topics. To read Kev’s replies, surf over to the latest WWWBoard and look for the dude’s name in red. But hey, if ya really wanna skip the trip, here’s a summary of some of the stuff we hadn’t heard before. Read on, folks, a TON of the questions we hear every day around this place have been answered right in this news story:
Can you state for the record whether or not the Clerks and/or Mallrats sequels are dead prospects?

      ‘Mallrats’? Yes.

‘Clerks’? I’ll let you know in a week or so.

(On a query about buying back the Clerks TCS rights…)

Working on that as we speak. Stay tuned…

Still planning on the Mallrats comic sequel?

      Eventually, yes.

With the forthcoming closure of the viewaskewniverse, will Mewes be out of a job soon, or do you have roles in mind for him in your future endeavors?

Never, as long as I can help it. There will always be room for Mewes.

When will we hear news on your next project?

Either next week or a few months from now. [ED NOTE: This probably means that if Clerks 2 is the next flick, we’ll hear about it soon, and if not, he’s got another project as a backup that we’ll hear about in a couple of months since it’ll take a while to get all the ducks in a row.]

When is your Law & Order show gonna be on?

I’m not sure. Either next week or the week after, I think. They told me March. Rest assured, if it doesn’t air in March, I’ll be launching a full-scale internet attack on ‘Law & Order’ as well.

Do you know when the Barltelby and Loki one shot is coming out?

It’s not out, nor is it close yet. Sometime after the video release, I’d say. Maybe closer to the fall.

Is ‘3 more flicks and I’m out’ still a quote you’re still holding to, or are you gonna take it day by day?

I’m leaning toward the alcoholics’ mantra at this point.

Have you started writing the scripts for your Green Arrow run?

I’ve turned in my outline and heard good things so far. More next week.

Kevin Can you take Clerks TCS Elsewhere?

      Ask me in a week.

  • Kev Kills On Dennis Miller Live!

    • For those of you who’ve seen it, you know that Kevin once again made a kick-ass appearance on HBO’s Dennis Miller Live show on Friday night, chatting about his unexpected popularity (when Miller proclaimed Kev was the most requested guest on the internet), God, the bible, and even getting in a dig on the whole ABC situation. Our scooper sends in a play by play summary:
Miller’s monologue started with the political race, but quickly moved to a series of quips and rants about God and religion. Kevin came out (in his usual garb: t-shirt and blue sweat-jacket), and chatted up the same subjects with Dennis, only mentioning Dogma in passing. As usual, Kevin’s wit was in full swing, the best of which was a quick scenario about his daughter looking like Chris Rock.

The big highlight (for fans anyway), was The Eisner Diss, along with the whole “It’s wrong for this guy to be chuggin’ that dude’s dick…” bit.

As for the ABC diss, Miller was saying: “God is like the ultimate “Siskel & Ebert” review, if he gives you the thumbs down, you’re fuckin gone, straight to hell…”

Kevin agreed, actually he half pronounced the sentence with him, then quickly threw in: “Yeah, say hello to Eisner down there..” It seemed like he tried to slip it in without anyone really noticing, but the crowd caught it right away and let out a resounding “OOOOOOOOHHHH”. Kevin was surprised by the response, and when Dennis asked what the beef with Eisner was about, Kev replied “I had some trouble with ABC recently…” After that it was dropped, and minutes later, Miller did the outro with Kev and the show moved back into political satire and newsclips.

Once again, the big guy is thinking of his fans while he’s up there, and sneaking in something for us to chuckle at. He seemed to have a good sized fanbase in the studio audience, which gave him major props during his intro and his jokes, but they also must’ve sparked the bigger than expected reaction to his Eisner joke.

Good to see the man on TV once again: He’s lost weight, he’s confident, and best of all: he’s still leaving us all in stitches. Thumbs up, Noonch!

The show reruns TONIGHT on HBO for those of you that may have missed it on Friday.

    • Everyone ready? Kev’s bound to bring down the house on another appearance tonight with Dennis Miller LIVE! The program airs at 11:30 EST on HBO (check your local listings depending on where you’re at). We’ll be tuning in! You should, too. Hurry up and subscribe to HBO if ya don’t. You’re missing The Sopranos, too, for god’s sake.

Anyway, we just wanted to get a few stories out before kicking off the weekend, since it seems that some of the other media outlets are FINALLY getting wind of the whole Clerks TCS story. Most are just focusing on the initial post by Kev on the web board, but give no mention of the big post that followed on our site. Ah well. Here’s the story and a few NewsBites of interest, including some way cool new fan artwork and a tidbit on the ABP DVD delay:

    • Bill Coughlan comes through again with another amazing piece of art. This time, he’s done a concept on what a one sheet might look like (teaser, for sure) if the “ultimate Jersey flick” were Kev’s next. We really dig this a lot. In fact, we wish we had a full size version of this to frame up on the wall. That’s how cool it is. You can view this wonderful work in large, medium, or small sizes.

The poster features a full “dream” cast list, along with the tagline “We’re gonna need a bigger budget”. Bill says:

I centered the image around the “Salsa Shark” (the original gem of an idea I had back when it was just going to be Clerks2), which meant that all o the other props had to be less prominent. In a nutshell, here’s a breakdown of the origins:

    >From Clerks:
The “salsa shark,” a stick of Chewlie’s gum

    >From Mallrats:
Brodie’s dixie cup and a couple of chocolate pretzels

    >From Chasing Amy:
A dart (from the early game between Alyssa and Holden), am artist’spencil and an ink pen

    >From Dogma:
A Mooby lapel pin and a Catholicism Wow! card

And as general references to Jay and Silent Bob:
Wrapping papers, a Nails cigarette and Bob’s button

    • A very fun and interesting website, brain.com, lists Dogma as one of the “smartestmovies of the year” in a very kind writeup on their site:
    Dogma

Although ignored by Oscar, there are few films that are so consistently smart-pretty much each line in this film shines and astonishes. Two renegade fallen angels (Ben Affleck and Matt Damon) are determined to get back into heaven, despite the apocalyptic consequence and the efforts of descendant of Jesus Christ, an unacknowledged 13th apostle named Rufus (hysterically funny Chris Rock) and two “prophets” in the form of Silent Bob (writer/director Kevin Smith) and Jay (frequent Smith partner Jason Mewes). Smith’s story is wholly original and thoughtful, but with enough action to engageand entertain a wider audience.

    • About the July 18th delay on A Better Place’s DVD, Vincent says:
Those guys are doing us a HUGE favor with the 5.1 remix, but being that it is a “favor” and all, we have to work around their schedule- they are currently booked up, so the DVD has been delayed to accomadate the remix. I think an extra wait is worth it to get a 5.1 remix by the geniuses at Skywalker.
    • Here’s a weird one: The ZDTVsite promoted our Clerks 2 site as the Clerks TCS site and just got a ton of facts wrong. Odd.

    • As mentioned above, the Clerks TCS fiasco is finally getting in the papers and on the net. Here’s the blurbs that we’ve gathered so far. Nothing really new here, EXCEPT the final story from today’s Entertainment Weekly in which Kev reveals that he’d love to buy the series back and turn it into an animated feature-length film:
    IMDB

IS CLERKS BEING CONSIGNED TO THE ROUND FILING BASKET?

Fans of controversial filmmaker Kevin Smith are once again rallying to hissupport, following ABC’s decision to postpone the debut of his animatedsitcom Clerks until May 31st. On Smith’s “The View Askew” fan site on theInternet, an unsigned article charges that the decision followed a recenttest screening of the show for Disney Studios executives. “The suits decidedthey didn’t understand its humor,” the article says, “and so they pushed itback to a summer release day. This almost ensures the show’s failure.” Thearticle then goes on to urge Smith’s fans to rally around Clerks. “Don’tgive Disney what they want,” it concludes. “When this show airs, watch it ifonly to spite the Mouse.”

    Yahoo News

    “Kevin Smith Disses Disney”

Director Kevin Smith seems to enjoy taking on the big guys. First it was God, and now he’s stepping up to Mickey Mouse. Is anything sacred?

The creator of Chasing Amy and the controversial religious flick Dogma continues to slam Disneyfied ABC over its decision to postpone the debut of the animated sitcom version of Clerks until May 31. His rabid Internet fan base promptly joined in, rallying support to make sure his new cartoon doesn’t get canned.

Smith took to the pages of his production company Website to bash the Alphabet Network and Disney execs, saying the stuffed suits don’t understand the movie spinoff’s humor and have sentenced the show to a qui! ! ck death–the beginning of summer.

“May 31 pretty much ensures the show’s failure, in my book,” he says, pointing out that the summer months are typically a TV-ratings wasteland.

Smith’s project is a cel-based comedy chronicling the misadventures of characters introduced in his 1994 indie classic. Slacker faves Dante, Randal and the now-notorious duo Jay and Silent Bob (Smith’s apparently polar-opposite alter ego) all show up in the boob-tube version.

Smith initially hoped the Miramax TV-produced show would air before April, with the rest of the midseason shows. But ABC has stood by the decision to debut Clerks in May, saying it would do better outside the din of the network’s regular season. The network had previously expressed its commitment to the show.

But the filmmaker says it won’t get a fair shot. “Very seldom does a show launched during the summer get picked up. I can’t believe we got fucked hard by the mouse twice in the span of a year.

“Fucking suits, man. I don’t know why I bother.”

Smith’s other high-profile run-in with Mickey and Company came during last year’s flap over Dogma. The Bible tale with Ben Affleck and Matt Damon was condemned by some conservative Catholics as sacrilegious, despite being called pro-faith by Smith. The film was pulled from Miramax’s roster and passed to Lions Gate Films last April over fears it might draw too much flak to parent company Disney.

Since Smith’s original Clerks posting, fan sites have continued the tongue-lashing. When one lengthy posting was critical of Smith’s production, it was quickly dismissed as a diatribe penned by some pissed-off ex-animator. All the while, Clerks fans are backing Smith up, saying they won’t let the show die–no matter when it airs.

“If Walt Disney were alive today, he would not have let this happen,” one replied. “I’m sure he’s rolling over in his grave right now. I have my fingers and toes crossed that things w! ! ork out.”

Smith believed the higher-ups didn’t get the new cartoon’s youth-targeted humor, and instead launched it into oblivion to make room for more milquetoast sitcoms–not to mention more episodes of ratings juggernaut Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.

“No offense to Regis, but how long do they think that show’s going to be a hit if they keep airing the hell out of it?” Smith’s posting says. “I guess it doesn’t matter in short-sighted thinking…Which means that Millionaire will pretty much be on ABC every time you turn your television on.”

    It’s not that way already?

    Entertainment Weekly Magazine

    Sore ‘Clerks’

When ABC announced that Kevin Smith’s “midseason” animated sitcom based on his feature, Clerks, wouldn’t debut until May 31, the filmmaker didn’t play Silent Bob — he took out his frustration on his The View Askewniverse website. (See: “How we got f—ed by ABC. Hard”) Now Smith tells EW that he regrets taking ABC’s six-episode commitment: “it just burns my ass because we had other places we could have gone. UPN offered us 13 episodes on the air.” ABC defends the shuffle, pointing to the summer success of Millionaire, but Smith isn’t satisfied. “I’ve discussed [with Clerks’ production company Miramax] the possibility of buying it back and releasing it as a feature,” he says. “The idea of taking a movie and turning it into a cartoon that never airs on TV but instead [becomes a] movie — that’d be trippy.”

    • DVDFile has a blurb the Dogma slimmed-down DVD release this May. Nothing new, but here ya go:
Columbia : Just a single new announcement from Columbia today. Though it is not particularly a surprise, the full Dogma details have come in, and the $24.95 disc is due on 5/2. This is the bare-bones edition, with a full-on special edition expected next fall. This slim edition will have the 130-miute theatrical cut in both full frame and anamorphic widescreen on a double-sided disc (guess they are really pushin’ that bit rate with this one), with no features of note aside from production notes and the trailer. For more info on the special edition, check out our interview with View Askew’s Vincent Pereira.

By the way, we received our screener VHS in the mail the other day — Thanks, Columbia! No word on if we’ll be receiving a test pressing of the May DVD release, but if we do, we’ll have a review up for ya right away.

    • Online DVD sites are delaying Vincent Pereira’s “A Better Place” DVD release from Synapse until July 18th. We’re waitingfor official word from Vincent on delays and reasons, though we assume he needs more time to record the new 5.1 DD mix atSkywalker.
    • “Time Code 2000”, that experimental flick from Mike Figgis, and Salma Hayek‘s next onscreen appearance, now has a site online with information and a trailer. It’s an interesting concept…Atotally one-take flick with improvisation, shot 4 times, and run simultaneously in each of the 4 corners of the movie screen.Sounds interesting, yet also potentially headache-inducing.
    • Finally today, a happy 40th birthday to the last scion, Bethany herself, Linda Fiorentino.
