Dennis Miller Live
PART ONE
(Click Picture To Download Movie)

  • Thanks to The K-Man, we’ve got a fairly compressed version of Kev appearing on Dennis Miller Live. The clip’s broken up into pieces to prevent TOO large of a download. So, we’re proud to bring you non HBO folks or those of ya who just plain missed it the first part of the Dennis Miller Live interview/discussion. Please don’t contact us over different formats or technical difficulties with the clip. Our capturing equipment is on the blink, so you’ve just gotta take this clip as-is. Worked great for us though. Enjoy, and look for the remaining part of the interview very soon.

Kev Wows ‘Em In Los Angeles…

March 20th @ 12:00 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Nathan Edelman, Tony, Joe Hatton, Annette Benninger, & J@e

  • We’re receving rave reviews from Kevin’s appearance/signing session in Los Angeles at the Los Angeles Comic Convention. Kev appeared along with Scott Mosier and Dave Mandel to answer a bunch of questions (many regarding the Clerks TCS situation), as well as to screen the second episode of the series. Reports are coming in that the audience of around 500 again loved the show and couldn’t wait to see more. When asked about the show’s status, Kevin said he’ll know more in a week.

After the Q&A, Kevin sat and signed and chatted for everyone in attendance, and even came back to take pictures, sign, and chat some more with the remaining crew after a much needed break. Here’s a few VERY interesting tidbits that the guy seemed to hint about during the appearance:

  • The Chasing Amy DVD is likely pushed back to an early 2001 release, but this is unconfirmed. No idea why this occurred.
  • It’s highly likely that the Clerks cartoon will NOT air on television at all now.
  • Mallrats 2 and Clerks 2 are definitely out for the next flick. The “ultimate Jersey flick” seems to be next on the slate, which Kevin said will bookend the films nicely as well as wrap everything up. Sounds way cool.

As always, the guy treats the fans VERY well, even after a long a tiresome day. Several fan reports we received cited this, and how happy they were with Kev’s kindness and down to earth nature. Once again, the guy makes us proud to run this site.

  • You’re probably noticing a lot less on the update front lately. We’re around, it’s just been tough finding enough to gather for a full day’s news — Kevin & View Askew can’t be up to something new EVERY day, even though it may seem that way sometimes. We do have some information and fan reports from Kev’s con visit yesterday for ya today, which sounds like another in a long line of crowd-pleasing public appearances. Expect more of the same if you’re hitting any of the college shows in the coming weeks. Expect also a first look at the second episode of the Clerks cartoon, since it seems to be the norm for what the guy’s carrying to shows these days. We’ve also got the first part of Kev’s Dennis Miller Live interview in QuickTime format for ya today, and a couple other tidbits, so without further delay:

  • WizardWorld.Com features a brand new Kevin Smith interview, in which he discussed the Clerks cartoon, Disney, and more. The interview page features new stills from the series (episode 1, from the looks of it), and more. Kev also mentions that Clerks 2 IS the planned next film in this article, but we figure it’s a bit dated and things have changed since then.Read this wonderful piece right HERE.
  • A popular submission this weekend is a bite on a music video airing on MuchMusic, the Canadian MTV equivalent. Apparently a bad called “Rubber” created a music video with tributes to a ton of movies and TV shows, and in it, two Jay & Silent Bob-like characters barge into a character’s room and take over his TV. We heard it was pretty bad, yet humorous.
  • We forgot to mention that Oni Press released the Clerks Trade Paperback to comic stores last week. It features the original Clerks book, the Holiday Special and The Lost Scene book in one bound copy for less than $12. We’re sure the Stash will sell it to, if not already. Collectors will want it just to have it, or, if ya missed the issues, it’s the perfect way to catch up.

  • We’re putting this just as a newsbite since we think it’s a ridiculous (but humorous) rumor that started on the website “The Insider Report” that someone sent in. Take nothing away from this, we just wanted to let ya know that we saw it. We must agree that if indeed it were true, it certainly would be a VERY new direction for Kevin. But we just think it’s really funny anyway:
Kevin Smith’s New Project – 3/17/00 8:51:49 AM

Sent in, we won’t mention any names, but rumor has it that Kevin Smith has started production on a new film. It has no known actors and he is trying to keep it very quiet. He is reportedly filming a movie about the circus and its freak shows. There are three main characters who are all midgets, who were chosen from somewhere Northwestern US.

  • A roundtable discussion featuring Kevin and some other indie film icons appears in the new issue of The Nation. Youcan read the entire transcription at their website HERE.

  • Let the pics begin! Here’s some custom designed Dogma action figures that we dig (though it looks like Lee’s goingon safari a little bit)…Still, tons better than our sorry asses could whip up. Check ‘em out by clicking the thumbnails.

  • We’re not sure if we posted this yet or not, but just in case, here’s the new cover art for the Dogma DVD, courtesy ofDVD Express.
  • Finally today, from the new US Magazine, they ask celebs what they remember from their night at the Oscars:
Matt Damon:

“We forgot to thank Kevin Smith. And we were doing Dogma at the time. We’d just left the Dogma set in Pittsburgh to go to the Academy Awards, so it was strange that he was the one person we forgot. He had a huge hand in getting the movie made.”

  • We may stop printing stories that are just re-hashes of existing news we’ve already reported, but just to let ya know, both Showbiz Data and the Internet Movie Database ran the following piece, with no new news, just a summary on the Clerks TCS stuff we’ve been reporting here as of late:
Smith Wants To Turn Animated TV Series Into A Movie

Miramax, which bought back Kevin Smith’s feature Dogma from parent Disney after it bacame embroiled in criticism — and then sold it to Lion’s Gate — has been approached by Smith to buy back the rights to his animated sitcom Clerks, reedit it, and release it as a feature, the online edition of Entertainment Weekly reported Monday. Smith told EW: “The idea of taking a movie and turning it into a cartoon that never airs on TV but instead becomes a movie — that’d be trippy.” Smith also says that he regrets signing a deal with ABC for the series to begin with, particularly after his experience with Dogma. “It just burns my ass because we had other places we could have gone,” he told EW. Smith expressed outrage last week when he learned that ABC had decided not to air the show until May 31.

  • In the bizarre title of the year department, Alanis Morissette will appear with Shirley Knight and Andrea Martin in”The Vagina Monologues” at New York’s Westside Theater from March 21 through April 2. For more info, click HERE.
  • Finally today, as a followup to the Chasing Amy DVD rant last time, DVD File lists mulvaney@criterionco.com as the e-mail contact for Criterion projects. So if you really wanna try and get more information, we’d suggest sending a POLITE letter their way. They’re still undecided on a release date, last we’ve heard, though.

Thanks for checking in with us today. We’ll see you again soon!

Guastini Interviewed On Dogma’s Wings, More!

March 16th @ 12:00 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • We’ve been holding onto this piece for a bit, since Vinny was kind enough to send us a translation. We just didn’t want it to get lost in the shuffle. Anyway, this really isn’t an article so much on Dogma itself, but rather on the work that the FX team did to bring the wings and other elements to life in the flick. It’s a very interesting read, and has been tranlsated to English from the French magazine in which it appeared:
ON THE WINGS OF ANGELS VINCENT GUASTINI PRODUCTION’S WORK ON DOGMA

an Article by Chuck Wagner

In Kevin Smith’s new film DOGMA, Ben Affleck and Matt Damon portray two banished angels with a plan to get back into heaven — which might destroy the universe in the process! But while on earth, they sometimes get around on wings — animatronic wings designed by Vincent Guastini and the artisans of Vincent Guastini Productions.

“I heard about Kevin Smith and Scott Mosier doing a bunch of effects films on the Internet,” Guastini recalled. “I didn’t know anything about DOGMA whatsoever, and I sent them a press package on me, and I got a call from Scott Mosier, the producer. He said they were doing this film called DOGMA. I was actually a very big fan of theirs, because I did see CLERKS and MALLRATS, and CHASING AMY was just getting released and getting good reviews.”

Kevin Smith is based in Red Bank, New Jersey and Guastini is based in New York City. Vincent Guastini Productions is the first company of it kind on the East Coast of America doing makeup and creature effects for many of Hollywood’s main stream films and has been in business for over ten years. In the film, Affleck, Damon and Alan Rickman (who plays Metatron, Prince of Countenance, the Mouth of God), wear wings.

“The challenge of the movie was that they wanted to see angel wings that, first of all, were better than the angel wings in other movies, and that could do a lot more stuff. This was something I had never attacked before.”

And the competition?

“Definitely BRAZIL and, although I’m not going to put anybody else’s wings down, Kevin was not a big fan of MICHAEL [the John Travolta film where Travolta plays the archangel Michael] wings at all. He didn’t think they moved much and you really didn’t get to see them all until, maybe, the end. The advantage with BRAZIL was the person’s arms actually fit into the wings, which helped manipulate them. In the case of DOGMA, we didn’t have that luxury whatsoever. These wings had to not only move, they had to flap, they had to fold, and, I think it’s the first time that animatronic wings like these have been made where they can do all those functions in one full set.”

This is as opposed to having several sets of wings, with each capable of performing only a few of the functions required by the script.

“The one set of wings did everything,” Guastini said. “We had two sets of those, one as back-up. Alan Rickman and Ben Affleck had to wear those, and they were very heavy — about 60 pounds. And then on top of all of that, we had sets of what you might call, ‘stunt wings’ and ‘shoot-’em-up wings’ and what we called the ‘opened, sprung-out wings’ for when Ben Affleck comes swooping down from the top of a church steeple.”

So what mechanism was used to drive the movements? Electric motors?

“No. Completely cable. They’re controlled by operators. We had to make armor, also, for Ben Affleck when he’s in the wings. With every set of wings that was on him, even the animatronic ones, there was a certain type of armor that had to go on him to accommodate the harness that went on the back.”

And there were more things than angels…

“We had The Golgothan, also known as Noman or The Shit Demon, who is a character made from all the evil excrement in the world. This is one of the minions that Jason Lee — who plays the demon Azrael in the film — sends after Jay and Silent Bob.”

Jay and Silent Bob are recurring characters in Kevin Smith films. In fact, Kevin Smith IS Silent Bob. Jason Mewes plays Jay. Here they play prophets — with Alanis Morissette as God!

“I go by the title of Special Makeup Effects,” Guastini explained. “What that entails is I design and create make-up effects entailing prosthetics, make-up, etc.”

But some engineering-type work comes with the territory.

“The main frame of the wings is made from aluminum — milled and machined parts. On top of that frame is a spandex-type of material stretched over the frame. The feathers on the outer edges of the wings are sculpted and vacuum-formed from plastic and individually glued on.”

The Golgothan was altogether different.

“The Golgothan is a suit, about six feet, two inches in height. Bob Panetta, a stunt guy under the supervision of Gary Jensen, wore the suit. Mark Smith was the model for the suit. We sculpted it based on him, but when we did tests, we discovered that the suit was too much of a strain on him and we were afraid he’d have a heart attack and die on us! That’s when we went with Bob Panetta.

“But it’s a foam-latex suit with a spandex inner suit, with an animatronic, radio-controlled head. The thing did have to talk, laugh, smile among other expressions. It couldn’t look like a big, rubber suit, even though it’s a hard concept to make a shit-monster look believable. But I’m pleased at the way it looked in the film. There’s also an animatronic version of Ben Affleck which we did, in which the head and heart would blow up — which is what happens if a mortal hears the true sound of God’s voice. I also had to make a fake George Carlin [who plays Cardinal Glick] that gets dropped out of the sky and smashes to the ground. And I’d also like to thank key crew members Greg Romoundos & Ken Walker, who were responsible for the engineering of the animatronics for the wings that brought my design to life.”

Guastini is currently up for several possible films.

“I’m also designing for Hal Hartley’s first monster movie called MONSTER. It’s sort of a remake of BEAUTY AND THE BEAST with a little KING KONG here and there. That shoots in Iceland. The creature is sort of like a big, mythological demon that can feel the pain in the world. He can’t die. He’s been around since before the dinosaurs. He’s sick of what the world is and his goal is to try and be killed. But then he falls in love.”

  • Even with the day off yesterday, things are still VERY quiet around here this week. It’s a nice little break. Don’t worry, though, we’re sure things are going to pick up soon. We assume that if Clerks 2 is the next flick, we’ll hear something from Kev on that either this week or next week. Of course, that remains to be seen. Also, Kevin’s got a lot of public appearances coming up, and with them usually comes some nifty announcements or anecdotes. We’ll have scoops coming in from all over the place on that.

Anyway, for today, just a few NewsBites and a nice story on Dogma’s FX team from a French movie magazine (translated, of course). Here’s your news:

  • A brand new article appears in the March issue of SHOUT Magazine, featuring a sit down with the legendary Jason Mewes. Here’s the piece, in its entirety:
AT HOME WITH JASON MEWES

By Janna Silverglade

“You’re going to visit Jay Mewes, right?” asks Barbara, the taxi-driver, as she speeds through the town of Keansburg, New Jersey. “He’s a great guy, that Jay. He stays home and takes care of his sick mom. And you know what else, hon? You won’t get any of that Hollywood bullshit from him. No, not Jay. I went right up to his house after he made that last movie and asked him to sign an autograph for my daughter. We fought for ten minutes about me coming inside. He insisted. He’s just that kind of a guy.” Jason Mewes, the actor who stole the screen in all of Kevin Smith’s movies, stars in a comic book series and even has his own action figure, is just a regular guy. Well, maybe not exactly regular.

Mewes made his first film appearance in 1994’s Clerks, Kevin Smith’s sharp-witted writing and directorial debut, which received critical acclaim at both the Sundance and Cannes film festivals. Mewes played Jay, the hilariously lewd, wisecracking stoner alongside his gentle henchman, Silent Bob (Smith).

When Smith was writing the script for Clerks, he mentioned to Mewes that he was creating a part for him, but Mewes didn’t exactly start running his lines. “I knew that he [Smith] liked to write and shit like that. He told me he wrote a script, and I was like, ‘cool.’ But then I pretty much forgot about it. Two months later he was like, ‘Remember that script? You gotta memorize your lines. We’re starting in two weeks.’ I had totally forgotten about it.”

According to Mewes, Smith created Jay’s character based somewhat on Mewes as an adolescent. “Yeah, that’s all pretty much stuff I used to say when I was younger. I used to be that obnoxious. Pretty much everything was the same except I didn’t sell drugs. But I smoked weed everyday. I used to run around calling the girls sluts and pullin’ my pants down in front of them on the street, and shit like that.”

A lot has changed for Mewes since his mooning days. While he may still play the foul-mouthed character in all of Smith’s movies (Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy and Dogma), in person Mewes is very polite and reserved. He also recently moved home to Keansburg, New Jersey to take care of his sick mother.

Despite the fact that Mewes had no formal acting training and basically just showed up on the set of Clerks ready to go (with the help of a six-pack and a few bong hits), his performances have earned him critical acclaim, most notably in Dogma. In Variety’s review of the film, Todd McCarthy said, “Mewes generates more laughs than anyone.” When asked what he thinks about the critics’ rave reviews Mewes replies with refreshing modesty, “I don’t know, it’s cool. But it’s because I had funny dialogue written for me.”

In addition to Smith’s movies, Mewes has appeared with Smith’s Silent Bob character in a series of short films, directed by Smith for MTV. Mewes also had a role in the 1996 independent film Drawing Flies, in which he played a role other than Jay for the first time. Silent Bob and Jay more recently joined forces to make a cameo appearance in Scream 3, which Mewes was thrilled about because he got to meet the creator and the cast. “It was awesome. Kevin and I went out there for one day. We got to meet Wes Craven, Courtney Cox-Arquette, David Arquette and Parker Posey. We got pictures and talked with them all. It was great!”

Mewes approaches his new life like a kid in a candy shop. He’s not shy about asking his favorite celebrities to pose with him in pictures, even thought they don’t always say yes. At an AIDS benefit a couple years ago, Mewes asked Jack Nicholson, a longtime hero of Mewes’, if he would mind posing for a picture with him. Jack responded, “Yes, I would. But thanks for asking.” Mewes sees the pitfalls of fame and swears that he’ll never metamorphose into an egotistical monster. “No matter what, I’m going to be just like I am now. Why would I be any different?” Things may change a bit for Mewes, however, if Smith’s new “Clerks” cartoon, due out in May on ABC, does well (which, given the insanely clever dialogue and humor of all of Smith’s work, we can expect a hit). For one thing, Mewes will have to leave his hometown for the part. But Mewes’ priorities don’t seem to shift. “If the cartoon does well and I have to move out to L.A., I’ll bring my mom with me,” he says. “The warm weather will be good for her.”

Even though Mewes is constantly recognized, he still sees life through small town glasses. “Filming Mallrats was the happiest time ever. Being in a different state, staying at a hotel. It was so awesome. I had never really been out of the state, let alone staying in nice hotels. Motel Six, that’s it. I never had car services coming to pick me up. It was really cool and different.”

Mewes’ small town glasses stay on when he discusses working with such big names as George Carlin, Chris Rock, Salma Hayek and Alan Rickman in Dogma. “Everyone was really cool. I’d seen them in movies before and it was odd hanging out withthem, but Alan Rickman was the only one I was nervous about working with. I just think he’s awesome. He’s older and experienced. I don’t know, there’s just something about him that made me nervous. But then we rehearsed together and when we were doing my lines, he was laughing at my stuff. That totally made me feel comfortable. It was great.”

While many celebrities have teams of publicists, stylists and assistants making them fabulous and answering their fan letters, Mewes does everything himself. “I get a lot of fan letters and I try to respond to as many as possible. Sometimes I don’t respond, but not because I’m being a dick. I forget because I’m a procrastinator. Like my DVD player broke and I was supposed to send it back with the warranty. I mean, it’s been broken for about a month now, and I haven’t sent it back, just ’cause I’m like that. I need people to hold my hand through stuff a lot of times.”

Mewes obviously doesn’t need much hand-holding when it come to his career. Along with the comic book series and action figures, Mewes and Smith will appear in a new PlayStation football game, in which gamers can choose Jay or Silent Bob as one of their players. Mewes has four of Smith’s movies under his belt, but looks forward to expanding his acting career beyond the Jay character. In fact, Mewes has a specific idea of exactly the kind of role he’d like to play in the future, “I would love to play some sicko dude. Maybe a mob guy, some sick dude who cuts people’s fingers off and shit. It would be awesome if De Niro was the mob boss, and I was his main man. That would be cool.”

  • Finally today, a show that we know Kev’s always been a big fan of can finally be owned on video, at a price, accordingto ZENtertainment:

Lee Joins “The Breakers”…

March 14th @ 12:00 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Gene Beilfuss & Josh Babetski

  • Jason Lee‘s next role was announced in Variey today, and it sounds like a good one. This flick will most likely follow the release of the Cameron Crowe flick he just wrapped on (referred to as “Stillwater”, usually), and Lee’s popularity will undoubtedly be soaring. This next flick sounds like a good date flick, and it’s got Jennifer Love Hewitt, so ya KNOW our tickets are already as good as bought:
Jennifer Love HewittLee catches ‘Break’

Thesp joining Weaver, Hewitt in Lion laffer

Jason Lee will co-star with Sigourney Weaver and Jennifer Love Hewitt in MGM’s “The Breakers,” a comedy about a mother-daughter team of con artists.

Lee will take the role of Jack, a bartender whom Hewitt targets as an easy mark. Her plan is foiled, however, when she finds herself falling in love with him.

Directed by David Mirkin, “The Breakers” is written by Stephen Mazur, Paul Guay and Leora Barish. John Davis produces, with MGM exec veepee Alex Gartner serving as exec producer. Production is slated to begin April 17 in Palm Beach, Fla.

Lee, who recently wrapped Cameron Crowe’s as-yet-untitled feature for DreamWorks, starred in Lawrence Kasdan’s “Mumford” and was featured in Kevin Smith’s “Dogma.” His credits also include the films “Enemy of the State,” “Kissing a Fool” and “Chasing Amy,” for which he won an Independent Spirit Award.

Lee is repped by UTA, manager Gay Ribisi of Ribisi Entertainment and attorney Ken Richaman.

Lee’s been doing some fantastic film work since he started in Mallrats, and it’s good to see he’s getting more visible parts. And now he’s gonna play the love interest of Jennifer Love Hewitt?? And get PAID??? Wow. Wonder if it’s too late for us to sign up for acting school…hmmm…
