  • “Reel Paradise” will hit New York theaters in August, and LA in early September. Followin that, it goes wider! Everyone’s really digging the flick, the first non-Kev-directed View Askew production in quite some time. Click our banner up top for details or visit www.reelparadise.com.
  • When a movie studio registers a web domain, it’s usually at the point where the deal for a film is done, or close to done — It’s reserved for the optional use in promotion of the film. Not always, but sometimes…And it’s cheap enough to do. Today, two interesting new domains have come up that we thought may interest you.

First up, PASSIONOFTHECLERKSMOVIE.COM. And next, GREENHORNETTHEMOVIE.COM. Both domains have been registered to Disney Enterprises, Inc, in Burbank, California. So this is legit, and possibly the homes (or at least forwarding addresses) for two films we’ll be keeping our eyes on here at NA. We don’t expect content to appear at either of these domains for a while, but ya never know. Stay tuned.

  • SciFi.com has a small blurb with Richard Kelly giving some teases on “Southland Tales”. Kelly was interviewed in San Diego last weekend:
Richard Kelly, writer and director of the upcoming film Southland Tales, told SCI FI Wire that his difficulty in explaining the plot of the film has led to erroneous reports of what the film is about. “There’s been a lot of inaccurate information put out there,” Kelly said in an interview at Comic-Con International in San Diego. “You’re so close to something, you’re so deep, you lose objectivity sometimes. I’ve lost all objectivity, so if I even try to describe the plot right now I wouldn’t do it justice. … When you’re directing your own screenplay, sometimes there’s a shorthand, and you forget that you need to explain it to everyone. Otherwise they’re [confused].”

Kelly, best known for writing and directing the offbeat supernatural drama Donnie Darko, did eventually divulge some general details about the film, which stars Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Seann Willam Scott (The Dukes of Hazzard), Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson (The Scorpion King) and Kevin Smith (Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back). “It’s set in the year 2008 over Fourth of July weekend,” Kelly said. “There’s a T.S. Eliot poem called The Hollow Men, where at the end of the poem, the last three lines are, ‘This is the way the world ends. This is the way the world ends. This is the way the world ends. Not with a bang but … a whimper.’ A movie starring The Rock can’t end the world with a whimper. It needs to end with a bang. So that’s what the movie’s about.”

After years of preparation, Southland Tales is just four weeks away from shooting. Kelly said that one of the reasons the film took so long to go into production is because of the unusual sensibilities of his writing, which make his work difficult to categorize. “It’s stuff that doesn’t fit the parameters of what the studios are looking to do,” he said. “So it took a long time to push this through the system. If this one doesn’t make money I’ll just have to go and sell out and do something more commercial, because this has just been a bitch to get off the ground.”

Speaking of SciFi Channel…If you’re not watching Battlestar Galactica, you should be. Damn good show.

  • Affleck and Garner have been doing quite well at keeping in the shadows, as opposed to Bennifer I, which most folks are saying is a good thing. However, IMDB found an event to press release about, so we’ll share that here:
Actress Jennifer Garner’s hometown of Charleston, West Virginia, threw a massive baby shower for the mother-to-be and husband Ben Affleck – but the couple won’t receive any of the gifts. Hundreds of present-bearing fans attended a West Virginia Power minor league baseball game last week for the “Jen and Ben Baby Shower Night.” Fans bearing the same first name as the pregnant actress and those who donated a gift were admitted free. But the gifts are not for the newly wed Daredevil co-stars, they are to be donated to the baby pantry for Starting Points, a non-profit group serving children and the families of children under the age of eight. Garner and Affleck did not attend.
  • Lee on the tube: Tonight, “Stealing Harvard” airs on FX. Don’t say we didn’t warn you. That it’s airing, we mean. Yeah, that’s it.

Lee’s also the champ on a new VH-1 show called “Awesomely Wacky Celebrity Baby Names”. He was #1! It’ll be re-run on:

  • Music Askew? One reader found a ska band From Brazil who call themselves “Randal Grave”.
  • Remember those old CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE books? They’re coming to DVD (you use your remote to make the choice). Pretty neato, eh? Why do we mention? Well, this one’s got a cameo by Mark Hamill. Yes, Cock Knocker himself. Ah, CYOA…I just remember getting sick of dying all the time so I started cheating. Good times.
  • Comingsoon.net reports that Lance Armstrong would like to see Matt Damon play him in a biopic:
U.S. Cyclist Lnce Armstrong is about to win his seventh straight Tour de France on Sunday before he retires from the sport. His story, of an amazing comeback from cancer, is certainly worthy of the big-screen treatment, and Armstrong tells Men’s Journal he has a possible candidate in mind to play him in a biopic.

“I’ve had the chance to get to know Matt Damon. He is a fan of cycling and has a connection to cancer. He has even expressed an interest in the role,” Armstrong said in the magazine.

Exclusive Coverage: Smith In San Diego!

July 21st @ 4:33 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Mike Lengyel

  • Since costs prevent us from always make the coast-to-coast jump, we’re pround as punch (at least, as proud as punch can possibly be, anyway) to have Mike Lengyel on the scene, writing beautiful exclusive pieces on the big events we miss. Mike was front and center for Kevin’s speedy 1-hour Q&A (possibly the shortest ever, not by his choice) in San Diego last weekend. He’s filed another wonderfully written report, which we’re happy to present exclusively here at News Askew:
SMITH MAKES TRIUMPHANT RETURN TO SAN DIEGO’S 2005 COMIC-CON

By MIKE LENGYEL
News Askew Writer

SAN DIEGO, California (NA) – July 16, 2005

“I do make movies… but I was wondering on how to get them in the hands of someone like you?” asks a young, aspiring indie filmmaker to writer/director, Kevin Smith. His query is quickly met by a barrage of collective sighs and beleaguered “boos” stemming from a mob of 6,500 displeased fans, who are more eager to hear Smith make with the funny, rather than cater to answer one’s own self-serving desperate plea at getting his foot in the door.

But rather than chastise the young man, Smith instead decides to take what appears to be the high road and quickly jumps to his defense, addressing the crowd. “Don’t ‘boo’ him. This dude’s got a dream.”

As the chorus of “boos” quickly subsides, Smith focuses his attention back onto the filmmaker and asks, “Are you willing to suck cock for your dream, sir?”

The room quickly erupts into laughter as the filmmaker is left standing at the microphone, face now slightly red with embarrassment and left looking somewhat disheartened, not quite sure of what to make from his hero’s response.

“We all got to start somewhere. You can start on your knees.” continues Smith.

And on that note, this year’s appearance proved to be a welcome return to form for Smith, whose humor and askewed look on life, love and pop culture tends to lend a refreshing breath of air in the midst of the mass-marketing, promotional synergy that is Comic-Con. After taking a year off from 2004’s Con, Smith continues to show that he’s a juggernaut of a performance artist whose comedic reign is one not to be reckoned with – especially when he’s fielding audience questions and answering them with hilarious results.

This year was no exception. Running a bit fashionably behind, Smith quickly opened up the floor to questions, often urging the audience not too waste precious time by clapping after each response.

During one point of the Q & A, Smith was discussing his opinions of Mel Gibson’s ‘PASSION OF THE CHRIST’ and his displeasure at watching a 2-hour long film depicting what he considers to be the least interesting part of Christ’s life and noting that he much more prefers Martin Scorsese’s ‘THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST’ instead. During this point, one dismayed audience member protested Smith’s views by shouting a verbal reminder to Smith that “Jesus died for our sins” several times over, all the while continuing to disrupt the Q & A in attempting to get his point across. At first Smith had difficulty making out his statement.

“Dude, I can’t hear you. Yell it out again.” Smith responded.

“He died for your sins!” the man cried out.

“He died for my sins…? Oh, I totally know that! I’m gonna die for his one day to pay him back!” Smith quickly shot back.

As the man continued his protest, Smith appeared slightly more agitated, however never losing his cool, or his audience.

“Dude, don’t testify. I love Jesus! I love him like… I love him more than you motherfucker!” Smith proudly boasted as he tried to get his point across, which was praised over with laughter from the crowd.

As Smith continued to explain, “My feeling is ‘I love Jesus,’ why would I want to watch a movie in which he gets beat up for 2 hours? Like I would like to watch something more about Christ’s life, you know, what he said and what he did up to that point.”

Later, in switching gears, when asked about the upcoming ‘CLERKS’ sequel, tentatively entitled, ‘THE PASSION OF THE CLERKS’, Smith revealed that a principal photography date of September 12th was set and the shooting would continue through mid-October with hopes that it will be out beginning early next year. Smith also then later went on to reveal that he will indeed be directing the ‘DEGRASSI’ feature next year after he completes ‘THE PASSION OF THE CLERKS’. And while his three episode ‘DEGRASSI – The Next Generation’ story arc is set to air in the states in August, Smith also stated that there will be a ‘JAY and SILENT BOB DO DEGRASSI’ DVD to be released in the fall (October/November) of which will include the three episodes, commentaries and extras alike.

In closing, Smith took the time to introduce fellow writer/director and friend, Richard Kelly, out onstage to discuss his much anticipated follow up to his cult hit, ‘DONNIE DARKO’, entitled ‘SOUTHLAND TALES’, with Smith adding, “which stars a bunch of fuckin’ people like… BUFFY, THE SCORPION KING and… SILENT BOB.” Smith also notes that in conjunction prior to the release of ‘SOUTHLAND TALES’, both he and fellow partner in crime, Bob Chapman of Graffiti Designs, have teamed up with Kelly to produce and publish a six book graphic novel that will serve as a prequel of sorts leading up to the film, which Kelly will also write, with all six books scheduled to be released later this year.

While tight-lipped about the film, Kelly did manage to mention that Smith’s involvement in the film will be playing a wheelchair-bound Iraqi war-vet named Simon Theory, while also stating that filming is scheduled to begin in four-weeks with other casting announcements to be made very soon. Smith also expressed excitement in the film by declaring Kelly’s screenplay in as much as “brilliant” and placing the script’s brilliance in the same league as that of ‘PULP FICTION’.

Kelly meanwhile also acknowledged that the DVD for ‘TALES’ is also in the works and promises “one big, massive, over-priced DVD” which should include a 2-hour documentary on the making of the film by the same team who produced the mock-‘DONNIE DARKO’ documentary which can be found on the recent Director’s Cut of the film on DVD.

Smith, ever being the ringmaster of his own three-ring-circus, made quick last words exiting the stage to remind fans that he has three upcoming DVD’s scheduled for release: ‘MALLRATS: 10th Anniversary’, ‘JAY AND SILENT BOB DO DEGRASSI’ and ‘AN EVENING WITH KEVIN SMITH 2: EVENING HARDER’ all of which are due to be released just in time for the holidays.

  • Keep an eye on IFC (in between the fine movies and shows) and you might catch a new Target commercial featuring both Kevin and Jason Lee. The ad has Lee driving around town shopping his new script and making pen marks on a map (very Drawing Flies-esqe) to form the Target logo. Near the end, after not having much success, Lee bumps into Kevin and they have an exchange. If we manage to get a capture, we’ll let you know, of course.
  • MSNBC picked up a fairly dated (by a few weeks) about.com blurb from Kevin’s interview in a column this week:
Don’t look for Chevy Chase in the “Fletch” sequel. “Jersey Girl” director Kevin Smith is writing and directing the sequel to 1985 comedy staring Chase, but Smith says he hasn’t even talked with the Saturday Night Live alum about the film. “I don’t think Chevy Chase likes me anyway which is fine,” Smith told About.com. “The feeling’s mutual.” . .
  • There’s going to be a midnight screening of Mallrats at the Esquire theater in Denver, Colorade on Saturday, July 30th. Rats at midnight? Now THAT’S a party! Details HERE.
  • And finally, the fun one of the day — Ever wonder how J&SBSB ranks in film history when it comes to the “F” bomb? Wikipedia has your answer. Oh, and there’s a couple more of your faves a bit further down the list. Go for the record, Kev!!!! See ya next time!

Kev & Kelly @ The Con!

July 19th @ 4:35 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Kevin yet again dazzled auds in San Diego last weekend with another hour of fun and surprises. The first extensive report (with photos!) has gone up at AICN, and includes a very interesting description of storyboards that special guest Richard Kelly showed from next year’s “Southland Tales” (in which Kevin plays an Iraqi War Vet by the name of Simon Theory who lost his legs and is in a wheelchair).

In other ST news…JoBlo’s got the first teaser poster for Richard Kelly’s “Southland Tales” up, as well as a summary of what we’ve heard so far. The film is sounding EXCELLENT, and we’re very excited to see it, though hopeful that very little leaks out (sounds like it’ll be more fun that way). We’ll keep you posted on this one.

  • Our most popluar scoop today was from last night’s episode of the HBO series ENTOURAGE. On it, Ari Gold (played by Jeremy Piven) had this to say to a character based on the real-life Harvey Weinstein : “If it wasn’t for me, he would be producing Kevin Smith movies for the rest of his life.” As it turns out, one of the writers on the show, Rob Weiss, hasn’t been a fan of Kevin’s for a long time. Here’s what Kevin had to say about the show…
a) Nice to be mentioned. Just wish the dig made sense or was funnier.

b) Rob “Vanilla” Weiss (anyone remember “Amongst Friends”?) is a writer on the show, and he hasn’t been a fan of mine since “Spike, Mike, Slackers and Dykes”. I always figured it was only a matter of time before I got a dig on that show.

c) The dig might matter if the ratings of “Entourage” hadn’t fallen off from last year. From an Associated Press story about HBO’s ratings slipping…

The Associated Press wrote:

Through the end of May, HBO’s average prime-time viewership was down to 900,000 from 1.2 million for the same period in 2004. The weekly “Deadwood” audience has dropped by 2 million, and “Carnivale” was canceled, while “Six Feet Under” and “Entourage” started new seasons with smaller audiences than the year before.

And here’s another mention about the “Entourage” ratings slip…

Zap2It wrote:

Sunday’s other big cable premieres — HBO’s showbiz comedies “Entourage” and “The Comeback” — didn’t fare as well. Although “Entourage” received largely positive critical response, the second-season premiere drew only about 1.6 million viewers, down from 1.9 million for its series premiere last year. “The Comeback,” which stars ex-”Friend” Lisa Kudrow as a faded sitcom actress and was greeted with a critical beatdown, followed “Entourage” with 1.5 million viewers. Both shows were beaten by a repeat showing of the movie “The Girl Next Door” (1.7 million) on HBO later that night.

d) I can take a joke. And being mentioned on the show is kind of a badge of honor. And while it’s not HBO’s best, “Entourage” is a fun watch for me – if for no other reason than to see Jeremy Piven doing his best Ari Emmanuel impression (Ari’s one of my agents at Endeavor, upon whom Piven’s character is based).

And for the curious…

e) This would not stop me from guesting on the show, were I ever asked. Yes, I am a press whore.

Clerks : The Hat – Coming Soon!

July 18th @ 4:37 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Ming

  • Here’s a great new item available for preorder from the Stash just in time for the summer months, the Clerks Hat. We thought we saw the last of these hats in the Mallrats dirt mall, but we were wrong. Order yours today!
Originally created by Scott Mosier’s sister Kristin, only 4 of these hats were in existence until now. The Clerks logo hat features the ‘Clerks’ typewriter logo embroidered in white on an adjustable black hat. One the back the words, “I’m not even supposed to be here today!” reflect the famous words uttered repeatedly by Dante Hicks.

  • Kevin revealed that Southland Tales shirts began going on sale at the con, after his panel. You may have seen them, black with the ST logo, around the floor.
  • Aint It Cool News reports that Kevin had the honor of giving a big introduction to the greatest band in the world whilst in San Diego this weekend. We got this report from a lucky eye witness:
As the Crowd was expecting the Tenacious D to take the stage, out comes Kevin to introduce them. He admits to begging for the opportunity to bring them out. Apparently there are only 9 cocks in the world that he is interested in sucking. (There had been 10 but he topped off Affleck and is now down to 9) The 2 men he was bringing on the stage were numbers 7 and 5 on the list.

He walked off stage as Jables and KG walked on, and Kyle stopped Kevin and totally dropped trow, mooning the audience and displaying his junk to Kevin, who at least for the time being did not come through with his offer, at least not then.

  • Congratulations go out to J&SBSB composes James L. Venable, who was nominated for the Emmy for “Outstanding Main Title Theme for a Series”. The main title he did was for “Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends” on the Cartoon Network. You can hear an mp3 of the piece at Jim’s site. Congrats Jim, well earned, and best of luck at the Emmys!
  • More congrats to pass around today, to View Askew alum Ethan Suplee on the birth of his first child:
NBC Star Welcomes Birth of First Child

Ethan Suplee, who stars on the new NBC comedy “My Name Is Earl,” has welcomed the birth of his first child.

Suplee’s fiancee, talent manager Brandy Lewis, gave birth to the couple’s daughter June 23 at a Los Angeles hospital, publicist Kathy Manabat said Thursday. The baby is named Francis Clementine Suplee.

“They’re happy and thrilled and spending time with their daughter,” Manabat said.

Suplee’s screen credits include “Without a Paddle” and “American History X.” He will co-star with Billy Bob Thornton in the upcoming film “Mr. Woodcock.”

Lewis, who manages Giovanni Ribisi and Juliette Lewis, has two daughters from a previous marriage.

  • A local theater chain (Sunrise Cinemas) in Plantation, Florida has arranged for weekends of “flashback cinema”. Coming August 12th and 13th is “Clerks”. Yep, on the BIG SCREEN. We can’t tell you what a great experience it is to see the film in a crowded theater of fans if you haven’t done it before. So if you can make it, DO IT!
  • Here’s a small tidbit from last night’s “Reel Paradise” screening hosted by John Pierson that we reported on earlier last week:
Just wanted to point out that John Pierson started the Reel Paradise Q&A last night by commenting on the View Askew logo animation that opens the flick. He said that without Kevin’s generosity, the free movies in Fiji would not have happened and that without Kevin’s influence, the documentary definitely wouldn’t have happened. Just thought it was nice for JP to give Kev props before he started talking about the movie.

The movie itself was pretty entertaining. Pierson’s kids are a real hoot.

We’ll let you know of more opportunities to catch the film — We’re still eagerly awaiting a chance to see it ourselves!

  • Joblo.com has picked up on the Mallrats DVD release , spotlighting it in “DVD New Coolness #90”. Along with a glowing appraisal of the movie by the author, they go over some of the new (& old) features. It’s nice to see folks picking up the story, and we thank JoBlo for their continued support. You’re very kind.
  • This richmond.com article ranks Clerks in their Top 5 Movie Soundtracks (yep, those top 5′ers are at it again):
“Clerks”

Get this: While Kevin Smith spent $26,800 producing his indie smash, he spent $27,000 securing the rights to the songs on the soundtrack. It was a Hollywood first and it was worth it. Highlights include Alice in Chains’ “Got me Wrong” and Supernova’s “Chewbacca.” Then there’s “Berzerker,” a catchy tune that has more bleep-outs than a Mike Tyson press conference.

  • An easy to spot Clerks reference appears in this web comic entitled “This Comic Sucks”. But hey, we say any comic from View Askew fans can’t suck THAT bad! Enjoy.

  • The caption writers at “Nintendo Power” magazine continue to show their View Askew fandom. In the August issue’s “Power Quiz” section, there’s a guess-the-picture type puzzle. The caption for the puzzle says “No, it’s not one of those paintis that becomes a schooner if you look at it enough.” See the scan.
  • And finally today, since this film remains one of the top reasons that Kevin is making movies today, and started making movies over 10 years ago, we thought you may want to attend (not to mention, it’s the perfect chance to visit that cool new IFC Center in NYC):
“THE CRITERION COLLECTION ON SCREEN,” a monthly series at the new IFC Center, kicks off Thursday, July 21 at 8:45 pm with a special presentation of Richard Linklater’s indie landmark SLACKER (1991).

The series will highlight exceptional classic and contemporary cinema selected by The Criterion Collection, the world’s preeminent home entertainment label. Each month, Criterion will showcase one of its titles, screening meticulously-restored movies in IFC Center’s state-of-the-art High-Definition digital cinemas. In addition to a pristine version of the feature film, these events will include shorts and the illuminating bonus features that The Criterion Collection is known for–from short films to director and cast interview and deleted scenes–presented in a plush theatrical setting.

The program’s first installment on Thursday, July 21 at 8:45 pm, will feature Richard Linklater’s groundbreaking SLACKER, one of the most influential films of the Amercian independent movement. SLACKER presents a day in the life of a loose-knit subculture of marginal, eccentric, and overeducated citizens of Austin, Texas. Shooting on 16mm for a mere $23,000, writer/producer/director Linklater and his crew of friends eschewed a traditional plot, choosing instead to employ long takes and fluid transitions to create a tapestry of over a hundred characters, each as unique as the last, culminating in an episodic portrait of a distinct vernacular culture and a tribute to bohemian cerebration.

Criterion’s new High-Definition transfer of the feature will be shown. Also on tap are Woodshock, Linklater and Lee Daniel’s 1985 Super-8 short about Austin’s answer to Woodstock; audition interviews with potential SLACKERs; and a reunion that catches up with the cast and filmmakers 10 years after the film’s release.

Diner Playset: Concept Art!

July 17th @ 4:39 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Kevin Smith

  • A while back, we mentioned chatting with Bob Chapman about the concept of a Chasing Amy “playset” to go along with the inactions — Bob wasn’t sure it was the final decision at the time, and with the figures only at the con, we weren’t sure. Now, Kevin has revealed that the Marina Diner will indeed become a reality! Though it wasn’t prototyped in time for the con, here’s some exclusive concept artwork that should give you an idea what to expect. So yeah, now you’ve got to find MORE room on your shelf than ever! We were kind of hoping they’d put some SUGAR on the table for Jay, though…

First Look: Chasing Amy Inaction Figures!

July 16th @ 4:42 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Silent Boba Fett

  • It’s been a while since we’ve seen any new concepts for inaction figures, so why NOT let San Diego be the debut ground for the new CHASING AMY INACTION FIGURES? Everything else that’s cool seems to be happening there this weekend, as well (including a major appearance from Kevin TODAY!). Yet again, these things just seem to get cooler and cooler with each passing wave. Silent Boba Fett was on the scene snapping pics of a bewildered Holden, an angry Alyssa, a belligerent Banky, a defiant comic collector (yes, Mos makes his FIRST appearance as an inaction figure, hooray!), and, last but not least, a deceptively threatening Hooper X (also the first inaction appearance for Dwight Ewell).

So now that you see them, all you want to know is…WHEN WHEN WHEN…Right? Well, we sadly don’t have an official date (but you can bet we’ll be hitting Chappy up for hints as soon as possible), though prototypes in the past have taken only a few months from finished state to mass production. Our guess? Sometime in October. But don’t quote us on that. For now, enjoy the pics, and start making space on your shelves for 5 more. More news later.
